Bringing together new work from many of the leading experts on democratic citizenship, this volume presents both normative argument and empirical analysis to help deepen our understanding of the various competences that citizens require if there is to be a flourishing democratic political order in our present age.The essays explore the following themes: (1) the essential components of democratic citizenship and how these can be fostered; (2) the state of citizen competence in various democratic regimes; (3) civil society as a crucial site for the exercise and development of democratic citizenship; (4) new findings that show democratic citizens to have more political information and behave more rationally than hitherto supposed; and (5) the theory and practice of new institutional forms for democratic deliberation and democratic control. The final section of the book explores new and revitalized forms of democratic participation as well as the kind of participation that is likely to foster a wide variety of citizen competences. The discussion runs from what we know and can expect from town meetings, to the value of public work in fostering a democratic citizenry, to entirely new forms for expressing citizen judgment.

This book originates from a collaborative research initiative to examine how various societies in the Asia-Pacific Region construct moral and civic education, and to what extent these systems achieve thedemocratic objective of creating socially responsible citizens. In many western societies there is at least arhetorical tendency to separate the moral and civic dimensions of citizenship education, and in some casesto exclude the moral dimension from the discourse of preparing citizens. However, as cross-societal dialogues and research about citizenship education have increased in the pasttwo decades, scholars have identified differences in the emphasis put on the moral dimension of citizenshipeducation across the Asia-Pacific region. In many predominantly Confucian, Islamic and Buddhistsocieties, for example, the emphasis on the moral dimension of citizenship education is explicit, and insome cases, central. While awareness of a divide, or perhaps more appropriately a continuum in the role of moral versus civic education in democratic societies has beenrecognized for some time, to our knowledge this book marks the first effort of this scope to address the issue of the moral/civic divide in citizenshipeducation. Thus, through a cross-cultural dialogue across societies in the Asia-Pacific Region, this book addresses the issue of whether elements ofboth civic and moral education can be effectively joined to create a "socially responsible" citizen.

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2014 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Africa, , language: English, abstract: By mid-twentieth century, citizenship and democracy had become a grand narrative about cohesion within society as well as about representation and misrepresentation within the modern state. Building a national identity proceeds hand-in-hand with the tasks of building a legitimate state and democratic institutions. In Africa for instance, the issues of democracy and citizenship have come to the centre stage. Many post-independent African governments have attempted to construct and strengthen the national consciousness of their citizens. Such policy formed part of broader projects meant to develop and promote national identity and the ties that bind them to one another as well as emphasize the bonds between state and citizens. However the blurring of such issues as participation, civil society, nation-state, citizenship and democracy, robbed as it were, the public sphere of its 'ideal' status, particularly with regard to its potential as an integrative force in society. While pervasive poverty constitutes the main hindrance to democracy in some countries, in others, the democratic deficit rests on other considerations. Everyday experience of citizenship in post-colonial Algeria has revolved around a sense of what is lacking, the absence of entitlements, respect and dignity shattered by the French colonisers, a sense of longi...

What is it like to be a woman living through the transition from communism to democracy? What effect does this have on a woman's daily life, on her concept of herself, her family, and her community? Birth of Democratic Citizenship presents the stories of women in Romania as they describe their experiences on the journey to democratic citizenship. In candid and revealing conversations women between the ages of 24 and 83 explain how they negotiated their way through radical political transitions that had a direct impact on their everyday lives. Women who grew up under communism explore how these ideologies influenced their ideas of marriage, career, and a woman's role in society. Younger generations explore how they interpret civic rights and whether they incorporate these rights into their relationships with their family and community.Beginning with an overview of the role women have played in Romania from the late 18th century to today, Birth of Democratic Citizenship explores how the contemporary experience of women in postsocialist countries developed. The women speak about their reliance on, and negotiations with, communities, ranging from family and neighbors to local and national political parties. Birth of Democratic Citizenship argues that that the success of democracy will largely rely on the equal incorporation of women in the political and civic development of Romania. In doing so, it encourages frank consideration of what modern democracy is and what it wil...

Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Philosophy - Philosophy of the Present, grade: 1,3 (17/20 in lux. Notensystem), University of Luxembourg (Institut für Philosophie), language: English, abstract: Civic participation and democracy are widely discussed issues. However, motivations for a citizen to actually participate are rarely presented. The present thesis will defend the notion of engaged citizenship as an attitude of habitual interest and care in relation to an individual's political community. It is to follow public concerns and discourse with an active mind and actual action if seen necessary. Further, the desirability of engaged citizenship in a democratic context will be vindicated, and its necessity for a participatory deliberative democratic system will be explicated. Moreover, it will be argued that engaged citizenship and participatory democracy mutually condition each other. In this context, the thesis aims to provide incentives for the individual citizen to engage with his or her political community and social as well as natural environment. Guided by a Wittgensteinian and Habermasian framework, the democratic state is interpreted not only as a form of governance, but also as a reciprocal mode of political life that stays in need to be supported by an engaged citizenry. In order to put these aims into practise, the work public schools as well as private forms of civic engagement play a vital role.

The future of public education and democracy is at risk. Powerful forces are eroding commitment to public schools and weakening democratic resolve. Yet even in deeply troubling times, it is possible to broaden social imagination and empower effective advocacy for systemic progressive reform. Re-envisioning Education and Democracy explores challenges and opportunities for restructuring public education to establish and sustain more broadly inclusive, deeply democratic, and effectively transforming approaches to social inquiry and civic participation.Re-envisioning Education and Democracy adopts a non-traditional format to extend social awareness and imagination. Within each chapter, one episode of an evolving strategic narrative traces the life cycle of a systemic reform initiative. This is followed by an exploratory essay that draws from theory, research, criticism, and practice to prompt consideration of focal issues. Woven through each chapter is a poetically framed meditative stream informed by varied historical and cultural conceptions of oracles. A developmental sequence of social learning strategies (exploratory democratic practices), accompanied by thematic bibliographic references, are included to model democratic teaching and learning applicable in classroom and community settings.

The relationship between democracy and education is always one of the core questions when it comes to the existence, continuity, and development of a democratic society. In the spirit of the original sense of philosophy, this is, the loving of wisdom, Mikko Valtonen pursues in this book a perspective of a wise educator and asks through insightful philosophical analysis what could be the nature of the most wise and best education imaginable. The book consists of seven key dimensions of radical democratic education which include 1) democracy as a radical and progressive form of living, 2) liberating and therapeutic view on education, 3) melioristic worldview, 4) the ideal of self-critical reason, 5) hope as a fundamental attitude in education, 6) the ideal of peace and non-violence, and 7) synthesis of theory and practice. In the spirit of radical democracy theory, Valtonen defends the extension and radical deepening of democracy in all educational practices and understands democracy broadly as an active, communal, and value-based form of living deeply defining our whole human existence instead of being a mere quality of a political system.

The 1990s brought democratic transition to the countries of Central Eastern Europe - a still ongoing process, with specific social, economic and political challenges to be met in each country, including the reform of education. This book explores the educational reform process in Slovenia and Hungary from a gender perspective. A theoretical discussion of the relevance of gender in education is followed by a comparative analysis of the national curriculum reform and gender issues therein, the presence of gender in educational discourse, and the implications of the reforms for textbooks and teacher training in the two countries. The study is concluded by an assessment of the relative success of the reforms. Completed in 2003, the study covers an under-researched area, raises further questions and points towards potential research directions for scholars interested in gender and education in the CEE region. Recommendations are offered about elements of the Slovenian reform that could be adapted in Hungary to improve the curriculum and provide a context for discourse on gender in educational policies and practice, therefore the book is also of interest for educational decision-makers.

Globalization has a profound effect on the mission and goals of education worldwide. One of itsmost visible manifestations is the worldwide endorsement of the idea of "education for globalcitizenship," which has been enthusiastically supported by national governments, politicians, and policy-makers across different nations. Increasingly, the educational institutions feel underpressure to respond to globalization forces by preparing students to engage competitively andsuccessfully with this new realm, lest their nations be left in the dust. What is the role ofinternational schools in implementing the idea of "education for global citizenship"? How dothese schools create a culturally unbiased global curriculum when the adopted models havebeen developed by Western societies and at the very least are replete with (Western) culturalvalues, traditions, and biases? This collection of essays attempts to grapple with these complex issues, while highlighting that culture and politics closely intertwinewith schooling and curriculum as parents, administrators, teachers, and students of different backgrounds and interests negotiatedefinitions of self and each other to construct knowledge in particular contexts. The goal is to examine the complexity of factors thatdrive the global demand for "education for global citizenship" and de-construct the contested nature of "global citizenship" byexamining how the phenomenon is understood, interpreted, and modified in...

In the meantime, education, especially higher education, plays a very significant role in promoting citizenship and civic activism. This study tries to identify the levels of civic engagement among students at the Royal University of Phnom Penh and to investigate whether higher education has any significant part in fostering civic engagement among the students. To this end, 200 senior students at the Royal University of Phnom Penh, Cambodia's oldest and largest public university, were surveyed. In the questionnaire, three main categories of civic engagement were used: (a) civic activities, (b) electoral activities and (c) activities for political voice. Results indicate that the students were engaged in only a few activities, but not many others. However, based on the results, the students showed high perceptions about civic activities and high attentiveness to politics and government. What is interesting, however, is that (higher) education and family-two fundamental social institutions-seem to have no significant roles to play in building civically engaged citizens. The findings appear to reflect the curr...

Rhetorical Citizenship and Public Deliberation

5939 руб.
Citizenship has long been a central topic among educators, philosophers, and political theorists. Using the phrase "rhetorical citizenship" as a unifying perspective, Rhetorical Citizenship and Public Deliberation aims to develop an understanding of citizenship as a discursive phenomenon, arguing that discourse is not prefatory to real action but in many ways constitutive of civic engagement. To accomplish this, the book brings together, in a cross-disciplinary effort, contributions by scholars in fields that rarely intersect. For the most part, discussions of citizenship have focused on aspects that are central to the "liberal" tradition of social thought-that is, questions of the freedoms and rights of citizens and groups. This collection gives voice to a "republican" conception of citizenship. Seeing participation and debate as central to being a citizen, this tradition looks back to the Greek city-states and republican Rome. Citizenship, in this sense of the word, is rhetorical citizenship. Rhetoric is thus at the core of being a citizen. Aside from the editors, the contributors are John Adams, Paula Cossart, Jonas Gabrielsen, Jette Barnholdt Hansen, Kasper Møller Hansen, Sine Nørholm Just, Ildikó Kaposi, William Keith, Bart van Klink, Marie Lund Klujeff, Manfred Kraus, Oliver W. In Rousseau on Education, Freedom, and Judgment, Denise Schaeffer challenges the common view of Rousseau as primarily concerned with conditioning citizens' passions in order to promote republican virtue and unreflective patriotism. Schaeffer argues that, to the contrary, Rousseau's central concern is the problem of judgment and how to foster it on both the individual and political level in order to create the conditions for genuine self-rule. Offering a detailed commentary on Rousseau's major work on education, Emile, and a wide-ranging analysis of the relationship between Emile and several of Rousseau's other works, Schaeffer explores Rousseau's understanding of what good judgment is, how it is learned, and why it is central to the achievement and preservation of human freedom. The model of Rousseauian citizenship that emerges from Schaeffer's analysis is more dynamic and self-critical than is often recognized. This book demonstrates the importance of Rousseau's contribution to our understanding of the faculty of judgment, and, more broadly, invites a critical reevaluation of Rousseau's understanding of education, citizenship, and both individual and collective freedom.

In "Lives in Translation", Kathleen Hall investigates the cultural politics of immigration and citizenship, education and identity-formation among Sikh youth whose parents migrated to England from India and East Africa. Legally British, these young people encounter race as a barrier to becoming truly "English." Hall breaks with conventional ethnographies about immigrant groups by placing this paradox of modern citizenship at the center of her study, considering Sikh immigration within a broader analysis of the making of a multiracial postcolonial British nation. The postwar British public sphere has been a contested terrain on which the politics of cultural pluralism and of social incorporation have configured the possibilities and the limitations of citizenship and national belonging. Hall's rich ethnographic account directs attention to the shifting fields of power and cultural politics in the public sphere, where collective identities, social statuses, and cultural subjectivities are produced in law and policy, education and the media, as well as in families, peer groups, ethnic networks, and religious organizations. Hall uses a blend of interviews, fieldwork, and archival research to challenge the assimilationist narrative of the traditional immigration myth, demonstrating how migrant people come to know themselves and others through contradictory experiences of social conflict and solidarity across different social fields within the public sphere. Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2014 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: South East Europe, Balkans, grade: 10, , course: World Studies, language: English, abstract: Voting abroad is a topic which is not sufficiently analysed and covered in the literature, but still it is of great importance in relation to the equality of the right to vote for the citizens of a certain state, regardless where they reside. By possessing the citizenship, each citizen acquires rights and duties toward the state of citizenship, and has guaranteed freedom to exercise these rights and duties, among which is the right to vote. Republic of Macedonia as newly independent state whose political system is based on democratic principles, decided to include the Macedonian migrants (diaspora) into the election process by adopting the Law on Amending the Election Code in 2008, thus joining the group of 115 states in the world which enfranchised the diaspora. In this master's thesis the subject of analysis is the external voting of the Macedonian diaspora, by emphasizing the five principles of equality, universality, freedom, secrecy and directness of the right to vote of Macedonian citizens who reside abroad. The analysis is conducted by presenting the legal acts and regulations in the area of election policy of Republic of Macedonia, which shows that legally some of the five democratic principles of suffrage are disrupted.

Education Reform challenges "secular education" as a failed educational paradigm andproposes an alternate paradigm with far-reaching potential. It reveals how secularschools have insufficient resources to support the public's educational interests.Further, it reveals how religious schools, within a plural public education system, havethe superior capacity to nurture citizens with the moral, intellectual, and civic qualitiesof good citizenship. The fulcrum upon which Engelhardt's argument rests is therecognition that beliefs and values of a religious nature not only provide motivatingframeworks for individual life, but also, they naturally provide core sources ofmeaning, understanding, and motivation for education. Whereas secular schools avoidthese ideological resources, they potentially suffuse the curriculum, climate, andcommunity of "religious" schools to increase their educational success. Thus, this book argues that the move to a pluralpublic education system, in which families are free to choose publicly supportive "religious" schools, will advance theeducational interests of America. The argument of this book is developed in three parts. The first entails a multi-chapter analysis of education history todiscern the relationship between religion and the public's education goals. By tracing ways in which "religion" is a keyresource for curricular meaning, parent buy-in, rational thought, individual morality, public unity, and aca...

Democracy is usually conceived as based on self-rule or rule by the people, and it is this which is taken to ground the legitimacy of the democratic form of government. But who constitutes the people? Democratic political theory has a potentially fatal weakness at its core unless it can answer this question satisfactorily. In The Time of Popular Sovereignty, Paulina Ochoa Espejo examines the problems the concept of the people raises for liberal democratic theory, constitutional theory, and critical theory. She argues that to solve these problems, the people cannot be conceived as simply a collection of individuals. Rather, the people should be seen as a series of events, an ongoing process unfolding in time. She then offers a new theory of democratic peoplehood, laying the foundations for a new theory of democratic legitimacy.

As the title of this book suggests, how we understand, perceive and experience democracy mayhave a significant effect on how we actually engage in, and with, democracy. Within theeducational context, this is a key concern, and forms the basis of the research presented in thisvolume within a critical, comparative analysis. The Global Doing Democracy Research Project(GDDRP), which currently has some 70 scholars in over 20 countries examining how educatorsdo democracy, provides the framework in which diverse scholars explore a host of concerns related to democracy and democraticeducation, including the impact of neoliberalism, political literacy, critical engagement, teaching and learning for and about democracy, social justice, and the meaning of power/power relations within the educational context.Ultimately, the contributors of this book collectively ask: can there be democracy without a critically engaged education, and, importantly, what role do educators play in this context and process? Why many educators in diverse contexts believe that they areunable, dissuaded and/or prevented from doing thick democratic education is problematized in this book but the authors also seek toillustrate that, despite the challenges, barriers and concerns about doing democracy in education, something can, and should, be done todevelop, cultivate and ingratiate schools and society with more meaningful democratic practices and processes. This book breaks new ground by using a similar empirical me...

There are increasing rates in passive citizenship and deterioration on patriotism among citizens (especially in rural areas). Despite major efforts that have been taken in educating societies in Tanzania active citizenship is declining. Media organizations whether electronic or print have the responsibility to sensitize people on citizenship matters. This is because media is powerful in persuasion and can influence people effectively if used creatively. This book is analyzing Media coverage on active citizenship. It sought to find out the extent of media coverage and its influence to people towards active citizenship. The main objective of media in active citizenship is to stimulate media to increase infotainment educational programs that entice people to listen and be part of sharing their responsibility and accountability to societies in Tanzania. The major theories in this book are social responsibility and users' gratification which express how media perform for public interest and consumers' satisfaction of the media messages. These theories link the media responsibility to the society and meeting satisfaction of people in order to persuade people towards intended goal.

Physical education teaching and learning efforts obviously target the student. Like parents, teachers, administrators and any other directly or indirectly involved parties, students do have opinions based on their experience on their respective physical education classes and physical education in general. These opinions, or so-called attitudes, are important to research due to their potential of giving insight to the learner's perspective, which may also serve as an authentic feedback from the student. This study investigated German secondary school students' attitudes toward physical education. Results have the intention to reveal what attitudes towards physical education German students have and which factors influence these attitudes. The study sample contained students from the different school types Gymnasium, Realschule, and Haupt-/Werkrealschule. The students were surveyed via questionnaire that was developed based on validated research instruments from prior studies in the field. Data was analyzed integrating independent variables such as students' gender, physical education grade, grade point average, body mass index, socioeconomic status, type of school, citizenship, and the exercise and physical activity behavior of students, their parents and their peers.

With the spread of neoliberal projects, responsibility for the welfare of minority and poor citizens has shifted from states to local communities. Businesses, municipalities, grassroots activists, and state functionaries share in projects meant to help vulnerable populations become self-supportive. Ironically, such projects produce odd discursive blends of justice, solidarity, and wellbeing, and place the languages of feminist and minority rights side by side with the language of apolitical consumerism. Using theoretical concepts of economic citizenship and emotional capitalism, Economic Citizenship exposes the paradoxes that are deep within neoliberal interpretations of citizenship and analyzes the unexpected consequences of applying globally circulating notions to concrete local contexts.

This volume explores those new meanings through examining the theories and practices constituting the emerging ground of public leadership, including: research spanning secondary and higher education programs, local and international contexts, school-based and out-of-school time initiatives, and a broad diversity of youth. The Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Student Leadership explores leadership concepts and pedagogical topics of interest to high school and college leadership educators. The idea of a democratic developmental state forms part of the current development discourse advocated by international aid agencies, deliberated on by academics, and embraced by policy makers in many emerging economies in the global South. What is noticeable in this discourse is how little attention has been paid to a discussion of the essence of a democratic developmental state, and much of what passes for theory is little more than policy speak and political rhetoric. This volume fills a gap in the literature on the democratic developmental state. Analyzing the different approaches to the implementation of democratic developmental states in various countries in the South, it evaluates the extent to which these are merely replicating the central tenets of the East Asian model of the developmental state or if they are succeeding in their attempts to establish a new and more inclusive conceptualization of the state. In particular, the authors scrutinize to what degree the attempts to build a democratic developmental state may be distorted by the imperatives of neoliberalism. The volume broadens the understanding of the Nordic model of a democratic developmental state and shows how it represents an additional, and perhaps contending understanding of the developmental state derived from the East Asian experience.

Democracy is considered to be morally superior to other forms of political systems as itaspires to secure civil liberties, human rights, social justice and equality before the law foreveryone regardless of their gender, culture, religion and national origin. Enshrined in democracy isseparation of religion and state, fair and competitive elections of leaders according to a country'sconstitution which in turn is based on democratic ideals. Democracy aspires for people of differentbackgrounds to live together with their differences intact, but all contributing towards a better lifefor all.In today's increasingly pluralistic societies many people of different cultural and nationalbackgrounds are brought together. Many have migrated from countries with autocratic politicalsystems. Some with religions that require them to behave in different way, others with cultures teaching them values of harmony, collectivism and conformity as opposed to the culture of their host country emphasizing individualism and cherishing differences.Hence, in multicultural societies development of pluralistic democracy, a democracy which includes respect for diversity is essential.A truly multicultural education which is based on the assumption...

2011 Reprint of 1920 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. This book is a classic text in the history of American Education. Dewey's classic work, although tedious at times, is a cogent and landmark exposition of progressive educational theory. Democracy for Dewey was both a means and an end to the building of a good and just society. In this regard he sought to develop strategies and methods for training students through learning and discipline to become socially responsible adults. In this book Dewey sought at once synthesize, criticize, and expand upon the democratic (or proto-democratic) educational philosophies of Rousseau and Plato. He saw Rousseau's philosophy as overemphasizing the individual and Plato's philosophy as overemphasizing the society in which the individual lived. For Dewey, this distinction was largely a false one. He viewed the mind and its formation as a communal process. Thus the individual is only a meaningful concept when regarded as an inextricable part of his or her society, and the society has no meaning apart from its realization in the lives of its individual members.

This book is an attempt to relate moral formation to democratic life and to theemotional emotion of shame. The argument is that shame is essential to moralformation, that it tells us when we are violating our own moral norms. Contraryto common belief, I argue that shame is neither imposed on us by others (thoughit is certainly a product of our communal memberships) nor necessarilyharmful. In fact I argue that shame not only can be beneficial for us, but thatmoral formation and growth are both inextricably linked to a proper sense ofshame, a properly formed conscience. The process of moral formation is an important one for any society, but perhaps most of all for a democraticsociety. The foundational premise of democratic life is that we have the capacity to be self-governing, the desireto do the right thing, and the wisdom to discern what the right thing is. This is unlikely to happen unless there isa conscious effort to form the conscience of the young so that they can become democratic citizens.Which brings up, then, the question of moral education. Whatever it is that a particular society or communityconsiders to be "moral," the question of moral education is how do membersof the community come to be moral? Given that moral formation of theyoung is necessary, this discussion ends with a look at the practice of twoexemplary democratic moral practitioners, Vivian Paley and Deborah Meier, whose pedagogy shows how formation of young consciences can be done bythoughtful a...
