The book investigated the impact of school inspection activities on Secondary Schools Management in Moshi Municipality, as perceived by educators. The book used a cross-sectional survey design. Three hundred thirty- three respondents in 22 schools were included. The data gathered were coded, treated and analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, Spearman's rho correlation, and content analysis. The alpha level selected for determination of statistical significance and hypothesis testing was set at 0.05. Findings revealed that most of the respondents agreed that school inspectors' recommendations improved Schools management. Teachers in private schools hold better perception on school inspection activities than public school teachers. Male teachers hold the same perceptions as female teachers regarding inspection activities on schools. Older teachers tend to have better perceptions of inspection activities on school discipline and school development than younger teachers. Qualified teachers tend to have lower perceptions of inspection activities on school governance, and experienced teachers tend to have lower perceptions of inspection activities on school documents.

Moreover, school inspection provides policy and decision makers with accurate information about the current state of education in their respective institutions. The main purpose of this study is to examine and determine the impact of school inspection on teaching and learning in Dubai-based private schools, and to give some recommendations into how to conduct effective school inspection that would positively influence teaching and learning. This research included 37 participants; 2 inspectors, 4 head-teachers and 31 teachers, from 4 private schools, who follow different types of curricula, from all grades of performance according to inspection reports conducted in the 2014/2015 academic year.The findings show that school inspection has a significant role in school improvement, especially in teaching and learning. Teachers acknowledge the feedback that inspectors give to them. However, school inspection also has a negative impact on teaching and learning; for instance, it forces some schools to show activities they have never done before. However, the mere number of available design patterns complicates the decision-making which design pattern to choose and demands tools assisting in this process. We hence propose a knowledge-based formal representation of design patterns, a representation that is accessible by tools. Existing approaches to formalizing design patterns generally cover solely the formal description of the structure of design patterns. However, an important part of a design pattern description is the intent section, because the intent describes what the design pattern does and which design problems a pattern addresses. In this work, we develop a novel approach of formalizing design patterns by their intent. The formal representation is based on OWL, the web ontology language. The developed ontology can serve as support for the decision-making of choosing the right design pattern. We furthermore develop a tool that uses the ontology as a knowledge-base. The tool allows the user to visually describe design problems and gives suggestions of design patterns that solve a given design problem.

We propose detailed classifications of different calibration methods for catadioptric systems and a novel non-central catadioptric sensor autocalibration approach. The first part provides most calibration approaches found in literature classified based on basic common criteria between these methods and widely used assumptions employed by them. Currently there is no such detailed classification considering all these criteria and assumptions together. We cover both central and non-central catadioptric systems and show how frequently certain assumptions are taken in order to calibrate different catadioptric systems. The classified techniques provide an important review for the vision and robotics community at large. The second part proposes a novel non-central catadioptric sensor auto-calibration approach. It uses polarization imaging and catacaustics. Our novel approach helps to auto-calibrate any combination of specular surfaces and lenses.

The calibration of them is challenging since the channel-to-energy relation is not linear and energy drifts can occur. The quality of the calibration increases by using high-energy -ray sources. Neutron capture reactions (n,) with lathanum, bromine and chlorine which provide energies up to 8.5MeV are investigated with experiments and simulations. A moderator can deaccelerate the neutrons and that is why it increases the cross section for these reactions. Therefore the moderator thickness is analysed for an polyethylene exemplary. A thickness between around 5 cm is indicated as best choice. The lanthanum and bromine in the detector provides sharp peaks, as shown in the experiments. Chlorine target adds additional peaks to the spectrum. It is now possible to build an efficient and compact calibration setup.Der NEPTUN-Tagger ist ein Messaufbau, der LaBr 3 -Detektoren benutzt. Gamma-ray spectrometry is a non-destructive technique which has the advantage of not requiring laborious sample preparation. However, in order to obtain activity concentration values in the analyzed samples or the environment, prior knowledge of the full-energy peak efficiency (at each photon energy) for given measurement conditions is required. Usually the efficiency calibration of gamma-ray spectrometric systems is based on the use of standard radioactive sources of very similar geometrical dimensions, density, and chemical composition to the sample under study. To have calibration sources similar to the samples implies conditions that cannot be fulfilled in many cases. One effective procedure to overcome these difficulties is the use of Monte Carlo simulation, which allows the peak efficiencies to be calculated taking into account the detailed characteristics of the detector and sample. In this work, examples on how Monte Carlo simulation is applied for self absorption corrections (environmental samples) and efficiency calibration of detectors for "in situ" measurements are presented. The methodology used for uncertainty calculation in gamma-ray spectrometry is described.

Following an introduction, Chapter 1 presents the general concepts of truss layout optimization, starting from topology optimization where structural component sizes and system connectivity are simultaneously optimized. To fully realize the potential of truss layout optimization for the design of lightweight structures, the consideration of geometrical variables is then introduced. Chapter 2 addresses truss geometry and topology optimization by combining mathematical programming and structural mechanics: the structural properties of the optimal solution are used for devising the novel formulation. To avoid singularities arising in optimal configurations, this approach disaggregates the equilibrium equations and fully integrates their basic elements within the optimization formulation. The resulting tool incorporates elastic and plastic design, stress and displacement constraints, as well as self-weight and multiple loading. The inherent slenderness of lightweight structures requires the study of stability issues. As a remedy, Chapter 3 proposes a conceptually simple but efficient method to include local and nodal stability constraints in the formulation. Several numerical examples illustrate the impact of stability considerations on the optimal design. Finally, the investigation on realistic design problems in Chapter 4 confirms the practical applicability of the proposed method. It is shown how we can generate a range of optimal designs by varying design settings.

The greatest opportunity to influence performance of new products lies in the early stages of the design process. Inspired by simplicity and yet strength of the theory of evolution we define an analytical view of the design process which supports appearance of product performance. We introduce a generic operational model supported by a software tool and relate this model to the design terminology and several other theories including creativity techniques, TRIZ, performance management, knowledge management, operations research, software design and genetic algorithms. The conducted case-studies show how our results can be integrated smoothly into the design process and applied in higher design education. Advanced technologies have provided detailed spatiotemporal information about a variety of environmental variables and natural processes. Environmental model developers tend to make use of all available data and rigorously model all the detailed processes. Such practice may lead to highly complex models that demand large computational budgets to simulate the system. For example, a hydrologic or groundwater model representing a detailed conceptualization with a fine discretization level may demand hours (or even days) for a single run. Such computationally intensive models may be required to iteratively run many times (e.g., thousands of times) for various analyses including optimization, automatic calibration, design space exploration, sensitivity analysis, and uncertainty analysis, imposing prohibitively large computational burdens. This book is focused on the state-of-the-art concepts and methodologies for circumventing such computational challenges. Different approaches such as model pre-emption, surrogate modelling (metamodelling), and model reduction are discussed. Applications, benefits and drawbacks of different methods are demonstrated through multiple case studies.

There are obvious benefits in cost and time saved if the best practices are captured and made available to use. The proposed new approach has been tested at the example of development of the integrated design environment for modular workholder design at TUT, Estonia.

There are documented accounts of the influential role of U.S. aid in the development of Taiwanese design education. Missing from the historical records of design education, however, are the perspectives of local design practitioners who participated in the design workshops during the period of U.S. aid to Taiwan, 1963 to 1966. Using face-to-face interviews, this study draws upon the insights and perspectives of workshop participants. Specifically, this research explores selected participants’ learning experiences, personal interpretations, and private thoughts regarding the workshops and how the workshops impacted their thinking and influenced their professional practice. The study finds that the design workshops from 1963 to 1966 were part of the U.S. global strategy of economic assistance through design during the Cold War era. The design workshops incubated a number of design talents to either fulfill the needs of newly established design institutes or devote themselves to the local design industry. In addition to providing instruction for the design workshops, these foreign design experts also planned a curriculum as the basis for industrial design departments at the university

With scripting, computer programming becomes integral to the digital design process. The upcoming hypothesis of this thesis claims latter approach to be the natural and logical one. A sophisticated design theory known as Axiomatic Design [Suh 1990] is used to embed the design of a manufacturing system into the design of the product and the product development system. The generic derivation of such an integrated design framework will allow a broad application to manufacturing and product development system design. The following paragraph outlines the background and the issues related to the motivation for this thesis. In the next step, the thesis objectives and hypothesis are stated, marking the scope and content of this academic discussion. Finally, a brief overview is provided about the content and structure of each chapter.
