This book presents correct-by-design control techniques for switching systems, using different methods of stability analysis. Switching systems are increasingly used in the electronics and mechanical industries; in power electronics and the automotive industry, for example. This is due to their flexibility and simplicity in accurately controlling industrial mechanisms. By adopting appropriate control rules, we can steer a switching system to a region centered at a desired equilibrium point, while avoiding “unsafe” regions of parameter saturation. The authors explain various correct-by-design methods for control synthesis, using different methods of stability and invariance analysis. They also provide several applications of these methods to industrial examples of power electronics. Contents 1. Control Theory: Basic Concepts. 2. Sampled Switched Systems. 3. Safety Controllers. 4. Stability Controllers. 5. Application to Multilevel Converters. 6. Other Issues: Reachability, Sensitivity, Robustness and Nonlinearity. About the Authors Laurent Fribourg is head of the LSV (Laboratoire Spécification et Vérification) and Scientific Coordinator of the Institut Farman, Institut Fédératif de Recherche CNRS, which brings together the expertise of five laboratories from ENS Cachan, in France, in the fields of modeling, simulation and validation of complex systems. He has published over 70 articles in international journals and reviewed proceedings of international conferences, in the domain of the theory of formal methods and their industrial applications. Romain Soulat is in the third year of his doctorate at the LSV at ENS Cachan in France, under the supervision of Laurent Fribourg. He is working on the modeling and verification of hybrid systems. In particular, his interests concern robustness in scheduling problems – especially as part of a collaborative project with EADS Astrium on the verification of a component in the launcher for the future Ariane 6 rocket. He has published 5 articles in reviewed proceedings of international conferences.

Although the overall appearance of modern airliners has not changed a lot since the introduction of jetliners in the 1950s, their safety, efficiency and environmental friendliness have improved considerably. Main contributors to this have been gas turbine engine technology, advanced materials, computational aerodynamics, advanced structural analysis and on-board systems. Since aircraft design became a highly multidisciplinary activity, the development of multidisciplinary optimization (MDO) has become a popular new discipline. Despite this, the application of MDO during the conceptual design phase is not yet widespread. Advanced Aircraft Design: Conceptual Design, Analysis and Optimization of Subsonic Civil Airplanes presents a quasi-analytical optimization approach based on a concise set of sizing equations. Objectives are aerodynamic efficiency, mission fuel, empty weight and maximum takeoff weight. Independent design variables studied include design cruise altitude, wing area and span and thrust or power loading. Principal features of integrated concepts such as the blended wing and body and highly non-planar wings are also covered. The quasi-analytical approach enables designers to compare the results of high-fidelity MDO optimization with lower-fidelity methods which need far less computational effort. Another advantage to this approach is that it can provide answers to “what if” questions rapidly and with little computational cost. Key features: Presents a new fundamental vision on conceptual airplane design optimization Provides an overview of advanced technologies for propulsion and reducing aerodynamic drag Offers insight into the derivation of design sensitivity information Emphasizes design based on first principles Considers pros and cons of innovative configurations Reconsiders optimum cruise performance at transonic Mach numbers Advanced Aircraft Design: Conceptual Design, Analysis and Optimization of Subsonic Civil Airplanes advances understanding of the initial optimization of civil airplanes and is a must-have reference for aerospace engineering students, applied researchers, aircraft design engineers and analysts.

PV is one of the most promising renewable energy resources that converts solar energy into electricity with environment friendly manner. The aim of this book is to study, design and performance analysis of grid-connected PV system as follows: • System modeling; that is composed of two-diode model to describe the I-V and P-V characteristic curves of PV system performance. Modeling of PV system represents the main goal in the design and performance study of grid-connected PV system using accurate parameters of PV module. • Improving the efficiency of grid-connected PV system to operate at maximum power point (MPP) with the aid of perturb and observe (P&O) tracker via DC/DC converters. Although, P&O algorithm is widely applied due to its simplicity, costless and easy implementation, it suffers from instabilities, and oscillation around MPP at steady state. This book presents a modified P&O algorithm to overcome such drawbacks and improve MPPT performance of PV system under rapidly changes of weather. • Investigating the design performance of grid-connected PV inverter that suitable for low voltage appliance of distributed grid network at 220V and 50HZ.

Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Engineering - Power Engineering, grade: Merit, University of Manchester, course: Electrical Power Systems Engineering, language: English, abstract: This dissertation introduces wind-induced vibrations that influence the performance of overhead line structures. The main focus in this study is on Aeolian vibrations and the quantities related to the calculations of its performance such as safe design tension and fatigue limits. However, there are three main methods that are proposed to evaluate conductors with respect to vibrations which are Safe Design Tension Method, Fatigue Endurance Limits Method, and Energy Balance Method. The safe design tension method is applied on Aluminium Composite Steel Reinforced (ACSR) and All Aluminium Alloy Composite (AAAC). Eventually, a relationship is established between tension of conductor and span length. The fatigue endurance limits method uses bending strain and stress to evaluate the fatigue level on the conductor. The effect of vibration dampers to overcome vibration problems on overhead line conductors is also considered. Moreover, an assessment tool based on Microsoft EXCEL is developed which allows the evaluation of overhead line system conductors based on environmental conditions, mechanical properties, and system specifications. The assessment tool evaluates the overhead line system with respect to bending amplitude or alternatively using the antinode amplitude. The analysis of f...
