Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Two evolutionary approaches of allocating tasks onto a Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) are presented. Offline task arrangement: whenever a set of tasks has to be arranged onto an FPGA in practice, one is interested in arranging a maximum number of tasks which efficiently utilize the FPGA area. A genetic algorithm is proposed searching for an arrangement of tasks offline, i.e. before the tasks are physically placed onto the FPGA. Online task arrangement: FPGAs that allow partial reconfiguration at run-time can be shared among multiple independent tasks. When the sequence of tasks to be performed is unpredictable the FPGA controller needs to make allocation decisions online. Since online allocation suffers from fragmentation, tasks can end up waiting despite there being sufficient, albeit non-contiguous resources available to service them. The time to complete tasks is consequently longer and the utilization of the FPGA is lower than it could be. A genetic algorithm is proposed rearranging a subset of the tasks executing on the FPGA when doing so allows the next pending task to be processed sooner. In comparison with other heuristic approaches a genetic algorithm is described and evaluated which overcomes the NP-hard problems of identifying feasible rearrangements and scheduling the rearrangements when moving tasks are reloaded from off-chip. The goal of this research work is to implement a digital integrator having large bandwidth and high accuracy. we optimized the digital implementation of integrator on virtex5 (xc5vlx110t -1). The operating range of a digital wideband integrator is from 0 to π rad/sample. For accurate integration of random signal, a large analog bandwidth (in unit of rad/second) integrator is needed. In order to optimize analog bandwidth, structure of the digital integrator as well as architecture of involved arithmetic logic is studied. Our design is then compared to DSP-48 slices (hard macros) based design on FPGA as well as system generator(auto programming feature) based design on the same FPGA. Our RTL design achieved higher bandwidth of 40.970MHz compared with other two designs of 30.234 MHz and 29.016 MHz respectively. The integrator can integrate zero mean value signal only, so for verification of the design on FPGA, a pair of ADC and DAC is interfaced with the FPGA. On FPGA we implemented a digital High pass filter (to remove dc component and obtaining zero mean value signal) and proposed an integrator. Behavior of the integrator was then characterized using CRO, visually.

In accelerators, RF system is required to produce electromagnetic fields in accelerating structures that interact with charged particles and accelerate them. The performance of an accelerator depends on the stability of the RF field inside the cavity. The stability of the RF field inside the cavity is strongly affected by interfering noise and non-linear effect of active components of the entire RF amplifier chain feeding power to the RF cavity and also on the beam loading. For proper operation of the machine, amplitude and phase of the accelerating fields should be very stable (within 1% in amplitude and 1° in phase) and is achieved by low level RF feedback (LLRF) system. After achievement of desired performance from the developed digital fast feedback control system using FPGA, rapid prototyping capabilities of FPGA was highly appreciated and as time required for any digital logic development using FPGA is very less, it was proposed to develop a FPGA based frequency tuning loop for Indus machine.

An enhancement of DBSCAN algorithm is proposed, which detects the clusters of different shapes, sizes that differ in local density. We introduce three new algorithms. Our first proposed algorithm Vibration Method DBSCAN (VMDBSCAN) first finds out the “core” of each cluster – clusters generated after applying DBSCAN -. Then it “vibrates" points toward cluster that has the maximum influence on these points. The second proposed algorithm is Dynamic Method DBSCAN (DMDBSCAN). It selects several values of the radius of a number of objects (Eps) for different densities according to a k-dist plot. For each value of Eps, DBSCAN algorithm is adopted in order to make sure that all the clusters with respect to corresponding density are clustered. Next the points that have been clustered are ignored, which avoids marking both denser areas and sparser ones as one cluster. The last algorithm Vibration and Dynamic DBSCAN (VDDBSCAN) combines the first and the second algorithms. It begins by searching for each level of density to its corresponding Eps, then it will use DBSCAN to find all clusters, finally, it will use vibration method of VMDBSCAN to solve the problem of splitting clusters

This work aims to contribute to the area of visual tracking, which is the process of identifying an object of interest through a sequence of successive images. The thesis explores kernel-based statistical methods. Two algorithms are developed for visual tracking that are robust to noise and occlusions. In the first algorithm, a kernel PCA-based eigenspace representation is used. The de-noising and clustering capabilities of the kernel PCA procedure lead to a robust algorithm. In the second method, a robust density comparison framework is developed that is applied to visual tracking, where an object is tracked by minimizing the distance between a model distribution and given candidate distributions. The superior performance of kernel-based algorithms comes at a price of increased storage and computational requirements. A novel method is developed that takes advantage of the universal approximation capabilities of generalized radial basis function neural networks to reduce the computational and storage requirements for kernel-based methods.

Robust extraction of features in a severely defocused image is the fundamental problem of a phase-difference autofocusing system. In order to solve this problem, a multi-resolution feature extraction algorithm is proposed. Given the extracted features, the proposed auto-focusing system can provide the ideal focusing position using phase correlation matching. Since the proposed system accurately estimates the phase difference in the out-of-focus blurred image under low illumination, it can provide fast, robust auto focusing.

This work has presented an altogether unique approach for the implementation of the firewall. As evidenced from the results our implementation of the firewall in the FPGA paradigm not only leads to an SoC development but also gives high performance and high throughput with a capability to cater to the line speed. The other attributes of our design is also its reconfiguration aspects for different scenario. The comparison between our implementation and the existing firewalls shows that our firewall supports checking of all the attributes of the TCP/IP packet such as source IP, destination IP, Source port, Destination port and MAC address. Moreover it is compliant to all the protocols. It outperforms other firewalls in zero time effectiveness. IT also eases the system administrator’s task of configuration with a simple GUI based approach.

The modern FPGAs enable system designers to develop high-performance computing (HPC) applications with a large amount of parallelism. Real-time image processing is such a requirement that demands much more processing power than a conventional processor can deliver. In this research, we implemented software and hardware based architectures on FPGA to achieve real-time image processing. Furthermore, we benchmark and compare our implemented architectures with existing architectures. The operational structures of those systems consist of on-chip processors or custom vision coprocessors implemented in a parallel manner with efficient memory and bus architectures. The performance properties such as the accuracy, throughput and efficiency are measured and presented.According to results, FPGA implementations are faster than the DSP and GPP implementations for algorithms which can exploit a large amount of parallelism. Our image pre-processing architecture is nearly two times faster than the optimized software implementation on an Intel Core 2 Duo GPP. However, because of the higher clock frequency of DSPs/GPPs, the processing speed for sequential computations on on-chip processors in FPGAs is slower than on DSPs/GPPs. These on-chip processors are well suited for multi-processor systems for software level parallelism.
