Sharla M. Fett Working Cures. Healing, Health, and Power on Southern Slave Plantations

Exploring the charged topic of black health under slavery, Sharla Fett reveals how herbalism, conjuring, midwifery, and other African American healing practices became arts of resistance in the antebellum South. Fett shows how enslaved men and women drew on African precedents to develop a view of health and healing that was distinctly at odds with slaveholders' property concerns. While white slaveowners narrowly defined slave health in terms of "soundness" for labor, slaves embraced a relational view of health that was intimately tied to religion and community. African American healing practices thus not only restored the body but also provided a formidable weapon against white objectification of black health. Enslaved women played a particularly important role in plantation health culture: they made medicines, cared for the sick, and served as midwives in both black and white households. Their labor as health workers not only proved essential to plantation production but also gave them a basis of authority within enslaved communities. Not surprisingly, conflicts frequently arose between slave doctoring women and the whites who attempted to supervise their work, as did conflicts related to feigned illness, poisoning threats, and African-based religious practices. By examining the deeply contentious dynamics of plantation healing, Fett sheds new light on the broader power relations of antebellum American slavery.

Influence of Pregnancy Weight on Maternal and Child Health. Workshop Report

Influence of Pregnancy Weight on Maternal and Child Health: Workshop Report summarizes a one and a half day workshop convened in May 2006 that reviewed U.S. trends in maternal weight (prior to, during, and after pregnancy) among different populations of women; examined the emerging research findings related to the complex relationship of the biological, behavioral, psychological, and social interactions that affect maternal and pregnancy weight on maternal and child health outcomes; and discussed interventions that use this complex relationship to promote appropriate weight during pregnancy and postpartum. Given the unprecedented environment in the United States in which two-thirds of the adult population meets the criteria for being overweight or obese, the implications for women in the reproductive age period are unique in the history of the country. The concerns for maternal and infant health are real. The questions and answers tackled by committee members and workshop participants were not easy. Nevertheless, having an opportunity to explore what is known, examine the gaps in knowledge, and explore what to do now and in the future build a pathway for further inquiry and action. This report summarizes the workshop proceedings and highlights key themes that deserve further attention. The participants in this workshop describe what is known about recent trends in maternal weight gain and the impact of maternal weight during pregnancy on the health of mothers and their childr...

The Suri has an old tradition of child spacing practice. The reason for their child spacing practices are related to child welfare especially related to child feeding practices, maternal well being for fear of maternal depletion as a result of closely spaced births and the violent way of life that the Suri people often find themselves in. The traditional methods used for child spacing include the rhythm method, post - partum sexual abstinence, and prolonged breastfeeding. Traditional sexual norms such as polygamy and extramarital relation in men and the pastoralist way of life support child spacing practice using the traditional methods. In instances of unwanted pregnancy, the Suri try to induce abortion using local materials and plants.

Walter Randolph Adams, John Palmer Hawkins Health Care in Maya Guatemala. Confronting Medical Pluralism in a Developing Country

When the traditional meets the modern, nowhere is the impact felt as personally as in the realm of health care. Because practitioners trained in Western science tend to ignore traditional medicine in developing countries, conflict is inevitable.Health Care in Maya Guatemala examines medical systems and institutions in three K'iche' Maya communities to reveal the conflicts between indigenous medical care and the Guatemalan biomedical system. The editors and contributors show how people in this rapidly modernizing society think about traditional practices-and reveal that health conditions in traditional communities deteriorate over time as long-standing medical practices erode in the face of Western encroachment. The contributors first consider cultural, institutional, and behavioral aspects of health care in Guatemala. Then they look closely at the nature and treatment of specific health issues, such as dentistry and mental health-especially depression. Finally they provide new insight on midwifery, nutrition, ethnomedicine, and other topics. As a whole, the volume proposes steps toward a health care system more accessible to Mayas, incorporating K'iche' concepts with Western thought. Representing trends seen throughout the world, it shows the necessity of cultural understanding if poor people are to have access to medicine that combines the best of both local tradition and international biomedicine. Although Western medicine continues to ignore the importance of...

Across all cultures parenting is the foundation of family life. It is the domain where adult mental health meets infant development. Beginning in pregnancy, parenting involves many conscious and unconscious processes which have recently been shown to affect a child's development significantly. This book focuses on pregnancy and the first year of life, providing a thorough account of the points of encounter between adult and infant psychiatry. In a fresh and comprehensive way, it summarises knowledge about early parenting, including a critical analysis of parenting, what it means to be a «good enough parent», and its relationship to infant, parent and family outcomes. In addition to the psychiatric dimension, the book emphasises the biological aspects of parenting, parental psychopathology and normal and abnormal infant development. Praise for Parenting and Mental Health: “Tyano, Keren, Herrman and Cox have edited a thoughtfully prepared guide on normal and abnormal parenting. They have, with enormous skill and wisdom, helped to unite the important aspects of pregnancy, infant and childhood development and parenting for adult and child and adolescent psychiatrists. World-class internationally recognized clinicians and researchers help make this book useful throughout the world. This is a masterful, culturally sensitive and important book which provides a long overdue and much needed guide on relationships among children, parents and families.” —Michelle Riba, M.D., M.S., Professor and Associate Chair for Integrated Medical and Psychiatric Services, Department of Psychiatry, University of Michigan, USA “During recent decades, progress in the field of infant mental health has been revolutionary; at the same time, there has been rapid development in women’s mental health. By bringing these two together, this pioneering book leads its readers to the vital new focal point around perinatal mental health. The book integrates the origins of developmental psychiatry in attachment and systemic contexts and shows concretely how relationship experiences and biology interact when new life begins. After describing the fascinating world of early parenting, the book focuses on problems, difficulties and disorders during this phase of life and above all on how to support, intervene and treat disorders in parenting. When infants, mothers and fathers are understood in a holistic way, professionals in many fields will be able to promote the transmission of meaningful life through parenthood and parenting.” —Tuula Tamminen, Professor of Child Psychiatry, University of Tampere, Finland; Past-President of World Association for Infant Mental Health, President of European Society for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Cover design by Reouth Keren

Nicolas Rohde Disliked Practices

In recent years, the concept of organizational practices has become increasingly popular in organization studies. The focus of research that follows a "practice approach" is on the actual activities in organizations as opposed to prescribed procedures or standardized routines. This book is about a hitherto neglected category of practice, namely, disliked practices in organizations. On the basis of an empirical study in three German companies, the author reveals how continuous practicing of disliked practices results in a discrepancy between practitioners and their practices. This stands in contrast to previous literature, which understands practices as being exclusively positive and in which the consent of the practitioner to their practices is generally assumed.Based on the findings from the inductive study, the author develops a Theory of Disliked Practices, which explicates findings about the nature and the evolvement of disliked practices, and the negative effects of disliked practices on practitioners and organizational functioning. This book addresses researchers, lecturers, students and all those interested in organization studies and related disciplines, such as industrial-organizational psychology and sociology. The results of the study have significant implications for practice theory and methodology. Moreover, the theoretical model presented in this book provides a valuable basis for further research. Beyond that, the book will be insightful for managers and ...

Major changes are occurring in the United States population and the nation's health care institutions and delivery systems. Significant disparities in health status exist across population groups. But the health care enterprise, with all its integrated and disparate parts, has been slow to respond. Written by three nationally known scholars and experts, Diversity and Cultural Competence in Health Care: A Systems Approach is designed to provide health care students and professionals with a clear understanding of foundations, philosophies, and processes that strengthen diversity management, inclusion, and culturally competent care delivery. Focusing on current practice and health care policy, including the recently passed Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (ACA), this textbook integrates strategic diversity management, self-reflective leadership, and the personal change process with culturally and linguistically appropriate care into a cohesive systems-oriented approach for health care professionals. The essentials of cultural competence and diversity management covered in this text will be helpful to a wide variety of students because they encompass principles and practices that can be realistically incorporated into the ongoing work of any health care field or organization. Each chapter contains learning objectives, summary, key terms, and review questions and activities designed to allow students to understand and explore concepts and practices identified throughout the text.

Diploma Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Business economics - Industrial Management, grade: 1,3, LMU Munich (Information, Organisation und Management / und CDTM), language: English, abstract: "The most significant factor in America, leading to high production at low cost, is efficient management." This quotation is not from a longitudinal, empirical study, but it is stated by the British Productivity Council in the context of the Marshal Plan - the Anglo - American productivity mission in 1951. Hence, one question might be: Is there indeed a strong link between management practices and firm performance? A further question might be: How American management practices rank compared with European or Asian management practices? And what role plays organizational structure on firm performance? Are there interacted effects between management practices and organizational structure? Insights into the impact of management practices and organizational structure on firm performance are mainly based on theories.Consequently, there is a strong need to measure management practices and organizational structure across countries and cultures to verify theoretical hypotheses with empirical data. This paper sheds some empirical light on these topics as well as on the distribution of management practices and organizational structures across countries and industries. This book is based on a unique data set with more than 3500 management interviews to document and analyze the influen...

There has been noticeable increase of food vendors most cities in Africa and most parts of the globe, who sell both raw and cooked food items. It has been instigated by rapidly growing and changing food demands alongside the need to diversify and/or employ income sources in the face of declining incomes. Due to the enormous increase of street food vendors being sold close to sewers and along the roads, a study was done to determine the hygienic and sanitary practices of vendors on street foods. A sample of street food vendors, street food consumers and Public Health Officers were interviewed in Nairobi. This work examines the hygienic and sanitary practices, experiences of consumers of street foods and the role of public health officers. This work gives also recommendations on street food vending to enhance the safety of the consumers as street foods are here to stay. This work is ideal for food safety experts, institutions offering food safety, health and nutrition research bodies and health government ministries.

Leptin , the product of the ob gene, is a small peptide molecule synthesized by white adipocyte with an imporatnt role in the regulation of body fat and food intake. The presence of leptin and its receptor also detected in the placental tissue during pregnancy. The amount of fat stored is known to influence obesity and fertility, indicating a link between leptin and PCOS. Recent reports suggest the relevance of gene polymorphism in predicating PCOS. The present study was aimed at investigating the genetic relation between the LEPR and PCOS using polymerase chain reaction followed by sequencing. A case-control-based study approach was used, which included 102 controls, 50 lean PCOS and 60 obese PCOS from the Indian women population. A significant difference was found between the genotype frequencies of LEPR and PCOS. Three different mutations were observed in the case samples compared to the control. It shows a significant association between the LEPR and PCOS. I also got a novel SNP in the 12th exon of LEPR. My work also included the standardization of LEP, INS, INSVNTR that are related to the PCOS.

Made and the Found. Essays, Prose and Poetry in Honour of Michael Sheringham

The relationship between the made and the found is one of the most fertile tensions in modern French literature. This collection of critical and creative writing explores how the interplay between the given and the imagined, the real and the virtual, the world as we find it and the world as we make it, functions as a generative matrix for literary experimentation. Each contributor considers the question of attention and explores how attending to something -- a text, a place, a moment, a detail -- has the capacity to transform both perceiver and perceived.Drawing together analyses of diverse literary practices - the everyday, new autobiographical forms, contemporary poetics, textual and visual experiments, anthropology, urbanism, flânerie and archival work -- this volume invites us to make new connections between many well-established themes. Critical thinking by renowned scholars appears alongside poetry and prose by leading writers from France and Britain, forging new relationships between scholarly and creative practices and challenging us to cross the border between the two. This volume is in memory of Professor Michael Sheringham, whose ground-breaking works on autobiography, the everyday, and the archive redefined the field of French Studies. A remarkably perceptive cultural and literary critic, he published and spoke all over the world, and was particularly renowned for his friendships and collaborations with a wide range of critics and writers.
