Amy Chin, Bakhtier Pulatov Project Planning and Organizational Project Planning Support

Increasing globalization has brought academics and practitioners to study national cultures in management. Likewise, the trend towards running business through projects has brought broader perspectives such as national cultures into project management. Recent academic literature demonstrated that national culture has a major impact on management practices. However, the element of national culture is elusively described in the project management field. No extensive tests were found on the comparison of the project planning among countries, which could help to establish relationship between national cultures and project planning capabilities. Therefore, using GLOBE study to capture national cultures and Project Management Planning Quality(PMPQ) model to capture project planning approach and organizational planning support, this book compares national culture, project planning and organizational project planning support across four different countries: Malaysia,Japan,Sweden and Israel. It answers questions about the relevance of national culture to project planning and concludes with implications to project managers.

In today’s “contract” economy, workers change jobs between eight to ten times by the time they reach 35 years old. Mature workers and Baby Boomers are leaving the workplace by the tens of thousands every day. This mass exodus of the Mature workforce and Baby Boomers coincides with Millennial workers taking over roles of increasing importance within organizations. Estimates are Millennials will constitute 75-80% of the American workforce by 2020. Organizations have been “flattening out” their employee ranks by casting off layers of middle management the last few decades. With this huge transfer in the balance of power from older to younger American workers, Millennials bring with them into the workplace a new set of organizational values, beliefs about work, and a set of ethics and expectations about appropriate organizational behavior. Millennials expect that the organizations they work for (and buy from) share...

Curtis Odom Mind the Gap. Getting Business Results in Multigenerational Organizations

What is this gap we’re minding? It’s generational. There are many conversations on the Internet and at conferences about employee engagement, and what is needed to hold on to Millennial, and now Gen Z talent. Members of each generation bring distinct sets of values and behaviors in the workplace. They come to work with different expectations, assumptions, priorities, and approaches to work and communication, which will either help or hinder organizations. Not only is the workforce changing, so too is the customer base. Many organizations I’ve worked with, and senior leaders I’ve talked to, struggle with managing and utilizing a workforce made up of many generations—five covered in this book—that want different things. Why do they come to work? What is it they’re seeking? What does work-life balance mean to them? What is it that employers need to ask of them? What do they need to do that isn’t asked? How do we mind the generational gap, so we get the business results we want?Successful organizations take action to serve their diverse employee and customer base. When we manage generational challenges within the workforce, we create opportunities for collaboration and synergy to achieve optimal business results–giving an organization a competitive edge.Inside this book, I have answered the pressing questions about what can be done to help organizations and leaders focus on minding the gap.--Curtis L. Acquiring a deeper knowledge of a European community leaves fewer carbon footprints and is also, probably, a safer option than traipsing around the Far East. The eight fieldwork tasks, which are proposed here, should lead to clear conclusions about the particular life-style observed. The experience should not only be entertaining individually, but would also provide a valuable insight into one of the different national cultures which make up the European Union, 'New' or 'Old'. How can we all get on together, unless we know how the other cultures feel about themselves ?

Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Communications - Public Relations, Advertising, Marketing, Social Media, grade: 1,0, University of Duisburg-Essen (Wirtschaftswissenschaften), language: English, abstract: For many organizations the alignment between social media and organizational culture is a massive challenge because these two concepts do not match in general. The integration of social media in organizations demands preliminary change-oriented cultures which, however, often have inflexible structures that prevent changes. In this thesis, there will be an investigation on the effect of social media integration on the organizational culture by use of literature review, with a special focus on the internal communication within organizations. This thesis first defines the term of social media which are very up-to-date but which are used in many cases so that a differentiated point of view has to be taken. In almost the same manner, the term organizational culture is described. This concept, however, is underestimated because the majority of people do not think of an organizational culture when looking at an organization, but they are rather profit-oriented. Thus, it is crucial to consider this social aspect of an organization. The thesis investigates this concept critically. One of the concerned elements in consequence of the combination between social media and organizational culture is the communication within an organization. An integration of social media tec...

Masako Gillette Handbook of Organized Crime

Organized crime is a category of transnational, national, or local groupings of highly centralized enterprises run by criminals who intend to engage in illegal activity, most commonly for money and profit. Some criminal organizations, such as terrorist groups, are politically motivated. Sometimes criminal organizations force people to do business with them, such as when a gang extorts money from shopkeepers for so-called "protection". Gangs may become disciplined enough to be considered organized. A criminal organization or gang can also be referred to as a mafia, mob, or crime syndicate; the network, subculture and community of criminals may be referred to as the underworld. European sociologists (e.g. Diego Gambetta) define the mafia as a type of organized crime group that specializes in the supply of extra-legal protection and quasi law enforcement.

Salim Ismail, Michael S Malone, Yuri van Geest Exponential Organizations. Why new organizations are ten times better, faster, and cheaper than yours (and what to do about it)

In business, performance is key. In performance, how you organize can be the key to growth. In the past five years, the business world has seen the birth of a new breed of company-the Exponential Organization-that has revolutionized how a company can accelerate its growth by using technology. An ExO can eliminate the incremental, linear way traditional companies get bigger, leveraging assets like community, big data, algorithms, and new technology into achieving performance benchmarks ten times better than its peers. Three luminaries of the business world-Salim Ismail, Yuri van Geest, and Mike Malone-have researched this phenomenon and documented ten characteristics of Exponential Organizations. Here, in EXPONENTIAL ORGANIZATIONS, they walk the reader through how any company, from a startup to a multi-national, can become an ExO, streamline its performance, and grow to the next level.

Lloyd S. Kramer Nationalism in Europe and America. Politics, Cultures, and Identities since 1775

Examining the history of nationalism's pervasive influence on modern politics and cultural identities, Lloyd Kramer discusses how nationalist ideas gained emotional and cultural power after the revolutionary upheavals in the late eighteenth-century Atlantic world. Nationalism in Europe and America analyzes the multiple historical contexts and intellectual themes that have shaped modern nationalist cultures, including the political claims for national sovereignty, the emergence of nationalist narratives in historical writing and literature, the fusion of nationalism and religion, and the overlapping conceptions of gender, families, race, and national identities. Kramer emphasizes the similarities in American and European nationalist thought, showing how European ideas about land, history, and national destiny flourished in the United States while American ideas about national independence and political rights reappeared among European nationalists and also influenced the rise of anticolonial nationalisms in twentieth-century Asia and Africa. By placing nationalist ideas and conflicts within the specific, cross-cultural framework of Atlantic history and extending his analysis to the twentieth-century world wars, Kramer offers readers a thoughtful perspective on nationalism's enduring political and cultural importance throughout the modern world.
