Craig B. Howley Dynamics of Social Class, Race, and Place in Rural Education

Half the world's population lives in rural places, but education scholars and policy makers worldwide give little attention to rural of education. Indeed, most national systems, including in the developed world, treat their educational systems as institutions to"modernize" the global economy. The authors in this volume have different concerns. They are rural education scholars from Australia, Canada, the United States, and Kyrgyzstan, and here their focus is the dynamics of social class: in particular rural schools but also in rural schooling as a local manifestation of a national (and the global) system. For the most part, the volume comprises relevant empirical reports, but none neglects theory, and some privilege theory and interpretation. First and last chapters introduce the texts and synthesize their joint and separate meanings. What are the implications of place for social class? How do class dynamics manifest differently in more and less racially homogeneous rural communities? Howdoes place affect class and how might class affect place? How doesschooling in rural communities reproduce or interrupt social-class mobility across generations? The chapters engage such questions more completely than other volumes in rural education, not as afinal word or interm summary, but as an opening to an important lineof inquiry thus far largely neglected in rural education scholarship.

Dr. Sushanta Kumar Mahapatra Livelihood pattern of Agricultural Labour Households in Rural India

The exploration of rural agricultural labour households believes significance, as they represent a vulnerable section of the rural population, whose percentage has increased drastically in almost all the states in India. An important trend in large number of theoretical and empirical studies on the functioning of rural labour markets has been appeared to explain the patterns of income, employment, extent of earning and indebtedness prevalent among these households. This book analyzes the trend in wages, inter-district and intra-district differences in wage rate and gender differences among the rural agricultural labour households in rural Orissa with a view to understand their livelihood pattern. The book also analyzes pattern of employment, income, extent of indebtedness and earning prevalent among rural landless labourers and agricultural households in rural Orissa. Further, the book discusses the prevailing contractual arrangement of the rural labour market. This book would be very useful for students, academicians, researchers, activists and policy makers for understanding the dynamics of rural labour market, wage determination, livelihood pattern and development.

Amanuel Kussia Integration of Population Variables into Rural Development Programs with Ethiopian Case

Scientific Essay from the year 2018 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Demographics, Urban Management, Planning, , language: English, abstract: The main purpose of this essay is to examine the integrations between population variables and rural development in general and food security in particular. A critical review of literature and analysis of secondary data were carried out to understand these dynamic linkages. For all nations, people are the ultimate and the only recipient of development results. Even if the population variables are decisive planning inputs, however, they were ignored and treated as exogenous factors in the process of development planning during the 1950s and 1960s. And so, the resultant problems such as poverty, unemployment, inequality, and other social ills were pervasive and deep-rooted in rural areas of the developing countries. The major reason for this tragedy was belived to be the failure of development theories, policies, and approaches adopted during the 1950s and 60s. It was during the 1970s that the issue of integrating population factors into development planning attracted the attention of some international organizations (such as UN) and vigorously advocated since then. Therefore, so as to balance the pace of the population growth and rural development process, all development actors in Ethiopia should adopt holistic and synergetic approaches in such a way that enhance agricultural productivity and boost investment in rural social a...

It suggests inter alia that corruption and insufficient public participation are some of the major obstacles to the implementation of the sustainable development objectives of Agenda 21 in Nigeria. To enhance the realization of the objectives of Agenda 21 in Nigeria, the author recommends inter alia the establishment of a constitutional right to sustainable development alongside inter generational rights and the recognition of the public trust doctrine as well as the adoption of budget analysis. This work will be useful to Students of development law.It will also be of interest to any person interested in learning about the implementation of sustainable development in Nigeria.

Master's Thesis from the year 2005 in the subject Information Management, University of Manchester (IDPM), course: MSc Management and Information Systems, language: English, abstract: There has been a gamut of arguments concerning the role of information and communication technologies in reducing poverty and creating sustainable rural development in developing countries. But most of the studies have centred on case study descriptions, with a handful attempting to analyse the outcomes of these initiatives using a framework that addresses the multiple dimensions of the livelihoods of the rural poor. This dissertation takes a view that ICT can contribute to sustainable rural development when it is implemented and assessed through such a framework geared at building the capabilities and assets of the rural folks and improving the links within and between these people and the organisations and institutions that play a role in rural development. It reviews various paradigms of rural ICT in developing countries and goes on to analyse the implementation and contribution of two of such initiatives to rural livelihoods using the Sustainable Livelihoods Framework. The result revealed that such factors, as the perceptions of practitioners, political contentions and policy environments are the major factors shaping ICT initiatives for the rural poor.

Mongolia is an isolated country with a large territory and a small population. Population density of an average of 1.5 persons per square kilometre makes economic growth, human development and environmental sustainability a challenge especially in rural areas. Geographic and social isolation affect rural communities both politically and economically. Isolation results in "information hunger" in rural Mongolia and contributes to poverty growing after the country's transition to market economy in 1990. This work explores the opportunity of using information and communication technologies (ICTs) to address isolation and the lack of information in rural Mongolia. The methodology of the research is based on literature review; qualitative and quantitative evidences are drawn from literature, published and unpublished reports, policy papers as well as internet research. This book is intended for students, researchers and professionals in agriculture and rural development.

The continuous observation of the load currents in three different phases of distribution transformers, fixation of its average values on real time basis, mathematical model development with the above average value as base factor are the basic steps of this method, which subsequently leads to a time based dynamics. The validation of the so developed model is done by experimenting in a working system.

This work sets out to examine the relationship between the Nigerian Capital Market and economic development of Nigeria from 1987 to 2006. Thus, the performance of the Nigerian Capital Market indicators as they affect the GDP growth rate and human development index in Nigeria was examined. Multiple linear regression model was adopted as the method of analysis. The evaluation technique includes t-statistics, R squared, adjusted R squared, Durbin Watson test, standard error test and the f-statistics. The specific findings of this study show that there is no significant relationship between the capital market indicators and economic development in Nigeria during the period 1987 to 2006. There is a positive but insignificant relationship among the Nigerian Stock Exchange market capitalization, turnover ratio and economic development, while the relationship between the Nigerian Stock Exchange number of listed securities and economic development is negative and insignificant. Therefore, the Nigerian capital Market has fallen short of expectation vis-à-vis its role in fostering investment for economic growth and development.

Roberto Cui Oil Multinationals in Nigeria. Human Rights, Sustainable Development and the Law

Decades of irresponsible oil exploitation in the Niger Delta have caused a water and air pollution which does not have many comparisons anywhere else. In an already fragile country as Nigeria, characterised by weak democratic institutions and poor economic governance, this situation has led to increasing discontent and violence towards both the government and the oil multinationals. These two actors co-operate for the maximisation of oil profits and revenues while, at the same time, excluding local host communities from the participation in the oil development projects, preventing them from achieving a sustainable development, violating their human rights, and compromising their livelihoods. This book analyses the legal framework of Nigeria in the oil sector and the peculiarities of the country in order to provide a critical overview of the issues, demonstrating that the amendment of the domestic Acts dealing with the topic, as well as the remediation to the damages caused by oil multinationals, are no longer deferrable. The final aim is to suggest a pattern to sustainable oil development which, by means of applying the concepts of Corporate Social Responsibility, would help to quell the conflict, to improve the local people's standards of life, and to make Nigeria emerge as a socio-environmentally responsible African resource-rich country.

Onyejelam Emem The role of Law in promoting renewable energy development in Nigeria

The energy crisis in Nigeria is such that has brought about development setbacks, environmental degradation, increased poverty rate, etc and these must be addressed to bring about socio-economic development. The key to improving energy access lies in the ability of the government to include renewable energy sources like solar, wind energy, geothermal energy, biomass, as part of the nation's energy mix. However, the government can only achieve this feat where private investors (domestic and foreign) are actively involved. The Renewable energy industry in Nigeria is driven by Policies and most recently, the National Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Policy, 2015. Policies in Nigeria have been criticised for lacking in implementation, consistency, stability and lacking binding effects. These factors send the wrong signals to potential investors who need to be assured of security over investments made. Thus, it is therfore pertinent to have a legislation on renewable energy that would complement already existing policies and guarantee justice in event of a breach. The law can create an enabling environment for potential investors to drive renewable energy development in Nigeria.

The most fundamental reason is that they play crucial roles in both subsistence and market food production in Africa. Not only are women the majority in rural areas in Africa, but they are responsible for more than 50% of all productive activities, even in those households where men are present.

Rural-urban migration is becoming a common phenomenon in developing countries. This phenomenon invariably overstretch urban infrastructures. Urban influx is unlikely to cease despite of few employment opportunities available in cities. The main cause of these urban movements is rural poverty. The nature and patterns of these movement may slightly differ across different rural communities due to cultural variations. This book essentially give an in-depth analysis of migration pattern among Maasai in Tanzania, whose livelihood is based greatly on pastoralism. It tries to relate migration theories and the way in which Maasai as a marginalised group tries to utilize and respond to rural-urban dynamics. The central argument in this text is to situate migration as a possible survival or livelihood strategy among pastoral communities. The book has scholarly approach yet quite illuminating for all readers with interest in developmental issues in poor countries.

Kano. Environment, Society and Development

Kano: Environment, Society and Development is a collection of research works on Kano and its environs. Though largely a rural economy, the region is known for its huge population, extensive landmass and abundant natural resources. As a richly endowed part of Nigeria, it is not surprising that it has attracted several scholarly studies on its physical and human environments, including the region's potential for leading the charge in the country's quest for economic development. Contributions in this volume cover a wide range of critical environmental, economic, political, demographic, cultural and health issues. The diversity of the themes explored attests to the complexity and breadth of the curriculum of contemporary academic studies of geography. The authors worked on the principle that there is a dynamic relationship between man and his environment and noted that in the Kano region, environmental resources play a great role in supporting and developing peoples' livelihoods. They also explored the complex pattern of relationships between the physical and human environmental resources utilised in the area. They equally interrogated the current policies and management of environmental resources in Nigeria, which are too frequently underpinned by a perspective that views African societies primarily as backward and lacking in livelihood sustainability.

A world model: economies, trade, migration, security and development aid. This bookprovides the analytical capability to understand and explore the dynamics of globalisation. It is anchored in economic input-output models of over 200 countries and their relationships through trade, migration, security and development aid. The tools of complexity science are brought to bear and mathematical and computer models are developed both for the elements and for an integrated whole. Models are developed at a variety of scales ranging from the global and international trade through a European model of inter-sub-regional migration to piracy in the Gulf and the London riots of 2011. The models embrace the changing technology of international shipping, the impacts of migration on economic development along with changing patterns of military expenditure and development aid. A unique contribution is the level of spatial disaggregation which presents each of 200+ countries and their mutual interdependencies – along with some finer scale analyses of cities and regions. This is the first global model which offers this depth of detail with fully work-out models, these provide tools for policy making at national, European and global scales. Global dynamics: Presents in depth models of global dynamics. Provides a world economic model of 200+ countries and their interactions through trade, migration, security and development aid. Provides pointers to the deployment of analytical capability through modelling in policy development. Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2008 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Economic Geography, grade: Pass, Lund University (Department of social and economic geography), 66 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This thesis is a qualitative study of the golf course development in the village of Bara in Skåne. The focus of the analysis is on sustainability, neo-liberalism and planning. It is focused on two themes, namely use of place, which involves aspects of social sustainability, neo-liberalism and planning and impacts on the environment/landscape, which involves ecological sustainability and planning/traffic planning issues. Different theories are used in order to analyse the two themes in the context of the golf course development in Bara. The theories used here are built on academic literature about social and ecological sustainability, planning theory and neo-liberalism. Perkins' theory of commodification of rural spaces, Selberg's model of less impact in the environment by traffic, Clokes and Lapping's theoretical aspects of planning and rural planning, Chan and Lee's theory on social sustainability and Marsden's and Buttel's theory on rural sustainability are of special interest in this thesis. The development in Bara is strongly connected to the local environment and to aspects of economic development. It is therefore important to investigate this kind of rural development to see what impact it has on the environmental and...

Andrew Fieldsend New Sources of Employment in Rural Areas

Historically, the economic contribution of rural areas to regions was clear: it was the provider of farm produce and other raw materials such as coal. Rural employment was evidently based on the exploitation of natural capital. Today, natural capital still strongly characterises the profile of rural employment in the European Union but its effect now goes far beyond the traditional rural sector of agriculture. There are in fact four drivers of rural employment and rural economic prosperity, and these can be structured by two complementary analytical directions, namely 'production' based on (a) renewable and (b) non-renewable resources, and 'consumption' by (a) non-residents and (b) residents of a territory, hence 'Rural Europe 2+2+'. Thus, whether jobs are created through farming, mining, rural tourism or by attracting incomers who set up new businesses, natural capital is a common theme. However, the financial, human, physical and social capitals of rural areas must be improved in parallel with this via an integrated, territorial development approach. In this way, rural areas can become part of a smart, sustainable and inclusive economy in line with the priorities of Europe 2020.

Ashagidigbi Waheed, Yusuf Sulaiman, Omonona Bolarinwa Households. Food Demand and Food Security Status in Nigeria

The Food Security (FS) status of most households in Nigeria has worsened, especially due to inadequate economic access to food, most especially in the rural areas. However, most studies in Nigeria have focused on either households' food demand or FS without establishing the linkage. Therefore, nexus between households' FS and food demand in Nigeria was investigated. Cross-sectional data from National Living Standard Survey (NLSS) for 2004 by National Bureau of Statistics were utilized. A total of 18,861 rural and urban households were used for the analysis. Variables used were households' socioeconomic characteristics, prices, quantity purchased and expenditure on Food. Data were analysed by sectors using descriptive statistics, Foster, Greer and Thorbecke and sequential probit regression models. Low Food Demand Food Insecure Group (LFDFIG) was 42.6% in RA, while High Food Demand Food Secure Group (HFDFSG) was 44.1% in UA. Food insecurity was found to be higher in the RA with majority entrapped in LFDFINSG. Access to land and having formal education ensure transition of households out of LFDFINSG in RA.Access to credit ensures households remained in HFDFSG in UA.

Casmir Chukwuka Mbaegbu World Bank Conditionalities . Politics of Poverty Reduction in Africa

The book explores the linkage between World Bank loan conditionalities and politics of poverty reduction in Africa. Several decades of grappling with World Bank loan conditionalities and poverty reduction strategies have, at best, yielded meager returns as poverty and underdevelopment persist. Thus,it investigated the implementation of World Bank loan conditionalities and their impact on social welfare in Nigeria. Specifically, the book is a scholarly contribution to unmask the tenuous link between loan conditionalities and politics of poverty reduction strategies in Nigeria. Fundamentally, it is divided in to six major chapters. The first chapter which is the introduction examines the methodological rigour and elegance of the study. Chapter two x-rays privatization of public enterprises; the third chapter interrogates Government funding of social welfare. In addition, chapter four explores the World Bank loan development assistance in relation to human capacity development in Nigeria; while the summary, conclusion and recommendation were in chapter five. The book is an invaluable asset in understanding while abject poverty persist in Nigeria, and Africa at large.

Examined here are the legal and practical reasons for the inefficiency of the legal framework of creditor protection in Nigeria. This is amply justified considering the critical role of credit in the promotion of economic growth and development and also bearing in mind the near calamitous consequences the 2009 financial crisis unleashed not only among Nigerian banks and financial institutions, and in the international financial system. The latter nearly led to socioeconomic catastrophe in Nigeria, as well as globally. It is hoped that book is found useful by government, policy makers, academics, corporate financial experts, investment bankers and other stakeholders to initiate and implement efficient policy actions to protect creditors in order to sustain the flow of credit, the engine of any economy.

Research paper from the year 2008 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Development Politics, grade: none, University of Jaume I, language: English, abstract: In contemporary time, democracy has turned out to be the most supported political tool for development and social change, which has attained near global acclaim and admiration by many world leaders. Although it is contestable, the reasons for this vary. First, democracy has gained acceptability as a form of government based on equity and justice. Secondly, it purports to uphold the rule of law, and as well, guarantee the preservation of human rights. As it is assumed that effective strategies adopted and properly implemented by a nation have the tendency to accelerate progress in the development of the said nation, this work examined some strategies for sustainable development in Nigeria. It highlighted existing strategies for development in the country, examined progress and challenges in implementing the strategies, and further identified measures which when adopted and implemented, will likely change the social, economic, and political condition of the country for economic growth and sustainable development.

This book is about a problem that matters 85 percent of the Ethiopian population that not only derive means of livelihood from subsistent agriculture but also account for 89.8 percent of the total poverty. It attempts to look at the rural poverty situation by setting both absolute and food poverty line and computing the poverty head count index (P0), poverty gap index (P1) and poverty severity index (P2). The other core area the book managed to cover is the underlying causes of rural poverty. It investigated the role of fifteen independent variables in terms of determining the probability of the units of analysis (households) to escape rural poverty. By and large, the book is beyond doubt important for researchers and development practitioners operating in the developing world in general and those of Least Developed Countries (LDCs) in particular.

The Neo-liberal framework of World Bank inspired economic reforms in Nigeria has ensured that Nigeria adopts a comprehensive approach to the implementation of National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategies (NEEDS), rather than gradualist approach thereby, (a) necessitating increased World Bank development aids/assistance to Nigeria, (b) making it possible for NEEDS to meet its set out targets, and (c) growing Nigerian economy to an unprecedented level. The core of our argument, therefore, is that NEEDS should have a human face through incorporation of humanistic approach to the implementation of the reforms. We have demonstrated, however, that comprehensive and humanistic approaches are not necessarily mutually exclusive for they can be mutually inclusive and reinforcing as regards to implementation of NEEDS in Nigeria. This study focused on the role of World Bank in public and private sector reforms in Nigeria between 1999 and 2007.

This is strictly an examination of the effect of non-oil export on economic growth of Nigeria. The basic aim is to examine the trend and composition of the non-oil export in Nigeria and investigate the extent of the contribution of non-oil export sector to the Nigerian economy. The study generate serious academic interest in evolving new methods and strategies needed in developing non-oil exports for higher productivity and efficient performance which in the long run will result to economic growth and development. Hence it evaluates the federal government incentives and schemes in promoting non-oil export trade promotion in Nigeria with focus on the immense derivable benefits from engaging in non-oil export and the resulting economic growth in Nigeria at aggregate level which are associated with the current international trends in global trade liberation. Virtually all the nations' foreign exchange was obtained from the exportation of oil products due to the economic boom in 1970s. Thus, it is pertinent in this study to discuss the causes and consequences of the neglect of the non-oil export in detail as well as trend examined since 1970 in order to note its growth.

Mara Casey Tieken Why Rural Schools Matter

From headlines to documentaries, urban schools are at the center of current debates about education. From these accounts, one would never know that 51 million Americans live in rural communities and depend on their public schools to meet not only educational but also social and economic needs. For many communities, these schools are the ties that bind. Why Rural Schools Matter shares the untold story of rural education. Drawing upon extensive research in two southern towns, Mara Tieken exposes the complicated ways in which schools shape the racial dynamics of their towns and sustain the communities that surround them. The growing power of the state, however, brings the threat of rural school closure, which jeopardizes the education of children and the future of communities. With a nuanced understanding of the complicated relationship between communities and schools, Tieken warns us that current education policies--which narrow schools' purpose to academic achievement alone--endanger rural America and undermine the potential of a school, whether rural or urban, to sustain a community. Vividly demonstrating the effects of constricted definitions of public education in an era of economic turmoil and widening inequality, Tieken calls for a more contextual approach to education policymaking, involving both state and community.

Poverty, unemployment and inequality are crucial issues in development. This research identifies and analyses factors influencing rural employment promotion (REP) in southern Nigeria. It specifically describes and analyses the socio-economic characteristics (of rural women and men), which influence REP in the region. It also analyses the institutional, ecological and cultural variables promoting employment generation; estimates/determines crucial factors, which might influence REP; and identifies viable avenues for rapid REP. Over all, five major factors were extracted in the process of variable reduction in the analysis of data. These are the socio-economic attributes of the respondent; institutional influence on his/her activities; the ecology of the respondent's immediate environment; his/her financial and knowledge acquisition; and the physical and social capitals at his/her disposal for appropriation in the process of establishing a cottage industry for production and or service purpose(s). These are some of the key policy issues, which require the attention of national governments and international donor agencies in their bid to drive employment generation.

The book focuses on issues and challenges of economic transformation of the peri-urban area around Rajshahi city of Bangladesh. Peri-urban area is the transitional zone between an urban and its nearby rural area. Characteristically, the area is neither urban nor rural but it gradually attains urban characteristics and spatially shifts from urban to rural area. As a result, the economic setting in term of occupation, income, expenditure capacity, land use, land value, infrastructure, living facilities etc. of the dwellers of this area changes rapidly. And this changing process becomes influenced by a number of factors like location, distance from urban center, road network, transportation system, marketing network, employment opportunities, governmental policies and planning and so on. Though, the urban areas have development plan but due to week implementation of plan a haphazard urban growth can be found that reduces the actual competency of the area. So, it is necessary to implement the existing development plan and initiate integrated rural-urban development plan for better, planed and furnished urban development in Bangladesh.

Over the past 25 years labour migration from Bangladesh has registered a steady increase. From 1990 onwards on an average 2,25,000 Bangladeshis are migrating on short-term employment. The recent trend of the bulk of the migrants is more towards semi and unskilled labour migration. Major outflow of Bangladeshi labour generated significant financial flow to the country in the form of remittance. However, due to increase in the flow of unskilled and semi- skilled labour, remittance is increasing at a much lower rate than the labour flow. Remittance is crucial for Bangladesh's economy. It constitutes almost one-third of the foreign exchange earning. In 1998-99, remittance contributed 22 percent in financing imports. Studies have shown it has strong positive impact on GDP, and also on consumption and investment. This research assesses to identify the role of remittance in rural development. It also evaluates current uses and impacts of remittance, the characteristics of remittance sending and remittance receiving persons. The research also explores the problems and possible potentials in effective uses of remittance for rural development through investment in productive sectors.

Co-operatives play a vital and predominant role in catering the credit needs of small and marginal farm and poor living in rural areas. Co-operatives were introduced in 1904 in India with the enactment of Co-operative Credit Societies Act. The main objective of co-operatives is to help the most distressed class of rural people who were exploited by the rural elite for several years. The Co-operative Act of 1912 was passed to improve their co-operative movement which provided for federal co-operatives in India. Ever since, the credit through co-operatives is significant in the country. As a significant part of the multi-agency approach to credit delivery in India, co-operatives, both the short-term and long-term structure hold an important position, especially in the rural credit scenario and have played a pivotal role in the development of rural credit over the years. The geographical spread of the entire co-operative credit system covers over 74 per cent of rural credit outlets
