Margaret Early Reflections on Teaching Literacy. Selected Speeches of Margaret J. Early

The late Margaret J. Early was a nationally renowned educator in the field of English educationand reading, a past president of the National Council of Teachers of English, an author and aneditor herself, and the recipient of many awards. The book Reflections on Teaching Literacy:Selected Speeches of Margaret J. Early, edited by Willa Wolcott, contains fifteen of her speechesgiven during the 1970s and 1980s, two important decades for the English profession. In eachaddress Dr. Early probes, summarizes, and critiques the developments she sees occurring in theteaching of literacy. Her speeches are warm, chatty, and thought-provoking, providing both anhistorical overview of the issues involved and the immediacy of her perspective as she tacklespossible solutions to these issues-many of which continue to be very relevant. The speeches are enhanced by an in-depth, thoughtful "Foreword" written by Ben Nelms, aformer editor of The English Journal and a pre-eminent figure in English education, as he places Dr. Early's speeches in the largercontext of the changes within the profession itself. A two-part "Afterword" written by Jane Townsend and Barbara Pace, currentfaculty members at the University of Florida, explores the extent to which Dr. Early's speeches are linked to practices in teachingliteracy today.

Julie Dillenkofer The Use of Second Person Pronouns in Private and Official Letters in Early Modern English

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,0, University of Heidelberg (Anglistisches Seminar), language: English, abstract: This thesis includes 171 pages of detailed linguistic corpus analysis as well as 36 pages of running text examining the use of thou, thee, ye and you in Early Modern English. The corpus I will use is the diachronic multi-genre Helsinki Corpus of English Texts, which consists of 1 572 800 words. For my investigation of the subjective and objective second person pronouns, I will consider all 2977 occurrences of thou, thee, ye and you (including their alternative spellings) in the 126 Early Modern English text samples of private and official correspondence. For this research, I will use private and official letters, since they are essentially the only surviving text samples in which an individual is consistently addressed. I will first analyze the use of the subjective and objective second person pronouns in private correspondence. More precisely, I will determine how thou, thee, ye and you (and their alternative spellings) were used in the period of Early Modern English and in which context they appeared. Next, I will investigate the same four pronouns in non-private Early Modern English letters. Finally, I will compare the use of the subjective and objective second person pronouns in private and non-private correspondence from the first Early Modern English period (1500 to 1570) throug...

The actual implementation of these goals varies from school to school. The demand for good quality education makes it imperative to study the situation of English language teaching in the state and analyze the actual English language teaching scenario in primary schools in the state.

Camelia Santa The status of do-support in Early Modern English. Gammer Gurton.s Needle by William Stevenson and The Relapse by John Vanbrugh

Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: Non-gradable - pass, University of Geneva, course: Diachronic Syntax, language: English, abstract: In the history of the English language, a major syntax feature is the occurrence of verb movement, which is characteristic of early English, whereas, in Present Day English, the finite main verb remains within the VP. The loss of V-movement comes with the rise of periphrastic do in negative declarative clauses, interrogative clauses and negative imperative clauses. The Early Modern English period, which lies approximately between 1500 and 1700, is crucial as far as this change is concerned: the V-movement feature, distinguished by V-not in negative declarative clauses and V-Subject in interrogative clauses, coexists with the do-support feature, under the structure of do-not in negative declarative and imperative clauses and do-Subject-V in interrogative clauses. In order to examine the status of do-support during the EModE period, I will analyse and compare two dramatic texts: "Gammer Gurton's Needle," by William Stevenson (c 1553-1563) and "The Relapse," by John Vanbrugh (1697).The major issue addressed in this paper is the use or non-use of periphrastic do with main verbs.

David Stehling Semantic Change in the Early Modern English Period. Latin Influences on the English Language

Throughout the history, English was changing steadily. Not only was the English grammar, pronunciation or vocabulary being altered over the centuries but also the semantics of lexemes. A major factor that has a considerable impact on the semantics of words is the influence of foreign languages. This study deals with semantic changes due to the Latin influence on the English language in the Early Modern English period. The aim of the analysis is - with the help of the Oxford English Dictionary Online - to determine potential patterns of meaning alterations of English lexemes that were caused by the influx of Latin-derived equivalents, especially on the field of human anatomy, and between the 15th and the 18th century. Moreover, the Early Modern English period is portrayed as well as the roles of Latin and English during that time, also considering the integration of Latin loanwords into English. In order to discuss meaning changes due to Latin influences, a closer look will be taken at language modifications in general, at lexical change and at the various types of semantic change by which English words might have been affected.

Not only was the English grammar, pronunciation or vocabulary being altered over the centuries but also the semantics of the lexemes. The changes in the field of semantics might have had several reasons. According to Antoine Meillet , a French linguist, there are basically three major causes of semantic change: changes of the socio-cultural circumstances, the linguistic context in which a word is used, or changes of the respective concept itself or of the point of view from which the concept is seen. The third and most significant factor that has a considerable impact on the semantics of words is the influence of foreign languages and, to be more precise, the influence of borrowings. This paper deals with semantic changes due to Latin influences on the English language in the Early Modern English period. The aim of the following analysis is to determine potential patterns of meaning alterations of English lexemes that were caused by the influx of Latin-derived equivalents between the fifteenth and the eighteenth centuries. In the subsequent sections the Early Modern English period is portrayed including its historical and social-cultural backgrounds. Chinese Englishes: A Sociolinguistic History

This book explores the history of the English language in china from the arrival of the first English-speaking traders in the early seventeenth century to the present. Kingsley Bolton brings together and examines a substantial body of historical, linguistic and sociolinguistic research on the description and analysis of English in Hong Kong and China. He uses early wordlists, satirical cartoons and data from journals and memoirs, as well as more conventional sources, to uncover the forgotten history of English in china and to show how contemporary Hong Kong English has its historical roots in Chinese pidgin English. The book also considers the varying status of English in mainland China overtime, and developments since 1997. With its interdisciplinary perspective, the book will appeal not only to linguists, but to all those working in the fields of Asian studies and English studies, including those concerned with cultural and literary studies.

Emile Durkheim, George Simpson The Division of Labor in Society

2012 Reprint of 1933 Edition. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Although the concept of "division of labor" appears in social thought as early as Plato, and is crucial in the work of Adam Smith, Comte, Marx and Spencer, there can be no doubt that modern sociological interest in the division of labor begins with Durkheim. It is the concept that is most firmly associated with his name and remains a classic work to this day.

Arapaho Stories, Songs and Prayers. A Bilingual Anthology

A bison and a bobtailed horse race across the sky, raising a trail of dust behind them—leaving in their wake the Milky Way to forever mark their path. An unknown Arapaho teller shared this account with an ethnographer in 1893, explaining that the race determined which animal would be ridden, which would be food. Traditional American Indian oral narratives, ranging from origin stories to trickster tales and prayers, constitute part of the great heritage of each tribe. Many of these narratives, gathered in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, were obtained or published only in English translation. Although this is the case with many Arapaho stories, extensive Arapaho-language texts exist that have never before been published—until now. Arapaho Stories, Songs, and Prayers gives new life to these manuscripts, celebrating Arapaho oral narrative traditions in all the richness of their original language.Working with Alonzo Moss, Sr., and William J. C’Hair, two fluent native speakers of Arapaho, Andrew Cowell retranscribes these texts—collected between the early 1880s and the late 1920s—into modern Arapaho orthography, and retranslates and annotates them in English. Masterpieces of oral literature, these texts include creation accounts, stories about the Arapaho trickster character Nih'oo3oo, animal tales, anecdotes, songs, prayers, and ceremonial speeches. In addition to a general introduction, the editors offer linguistic, stylistic, thematic, and cultural comment...

Patricia Ronan Tense and Aspect Systems in Hiberno-English

Document from the year 2000 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, University of Marburg, language: English, abstract: This study investigates the tense and aspect systems in use in Irish English, which is also called Hiberno-English. Against the background of previous research, corpus material mainly consisting of Dublin English is discussed. The corpus consists of close to a quarter of a million words, collected manually mainly from written text, with some additional examples from participant observation. In addition to investigating the tense and aspect forms in use, possibilities for the geneses of the categories are discussed, and the potential influence from Early Modern English and Late Modern English is assessed, as well as the potential input from the Irish language. It is suggested that the tense system corresponds to that of Standard British English, whereas the aspectual system differs to varying degrees in perfect, progressive and habitual marking. It is further argued that the majority of the specially used aspectual categories in Hiberno-English could have been influenced in their development by influence from both the Irish language - i.e. Gaelic, and by influence from earlier British English language structures which were in use during the formative stages of the variety. This is not the case for the distinctive Hiberno-English after-perfect, however, which is entirely modeled on a corresponding Irish language structure.
