This is strictly an examination of the effect of non-oil export on economic growth of Nigeria. The basic aim is to examine the trend and composition of the non-oil export in Nigeria and investigate the extent of the contribution of non-oil export sector to the Nigerian economy. The study generate serious academic interest in evolving new methods and strategies needed in developing non-oil exports for higher productivity and efficient performance which in the long run will result to economic growth and development. Hence it evaluates the federal government incentives and schemes in promoting non-oil export trade promotion in Nigeria with focus on the immense derivable benefits from engaging in non-oil export and the resulting economic growth in Nigeria at aggregate level which are associated with the current international trends in global trade liberation. Virtually all the nations' foreign exchange was obtained from the exportation of oil products due to the economic boom in 1970s. Thus, it is pertinent in this study to discuss the causes and consequences of the neglect of the non-oil export in detail as well as trend examined since 1970 in order to note its growth.

Feed Efficiency in the Beef Industry provides a thorough and concise overview of feed efficiency in beef cattle. It frames the great importance of feed efficiency to the industry and details the latest findings of the many scientific disciplines that intersect and aim to improve efficient and sustainable production of nutritious beef. The vast majority of production costs are directly tied to feed. With increased demand for grains to feed a rapidly increasing world population and to supply a new demand for alternative fuels, feed costs continue to increase. In recent years, the negative environmental impacts of inefficient feeding have also been realized; as such feed efficiency is an important factor in both economic viability and environmental sustainability of cattle production. Feed Efficiency in the Beef Industry covers a broad range of topics ranging from economic evaluation of feed efficiency to the physiological and genetic bases of efficient conversion of feed to high quality beef. Chapters also look at how a fuller understanding of feed efficiency is leading to new selective breeding efforts to develop more efficient cattle. With wide-ranging coverage from leading international researchers, Feed Efficiency will be a valuable resource for producers who wish to understand the complexities, challenges, and opportunities to reduce their cost of production, for students studying the topic and for researchers and professionals working in the beef industry.

With the launching of the United Nations (UN) Decade for Women (1975 - 1985) discussions about the importance of integrating women into the formal economy began to attract worldwide attention. Henceforth, various development theories emerged, which all aim at increasing women's access to income in order to alleviate poverty, foster national development and economic growth and target gender equality. Although emphases of the theories shifted, nomenclatures changed and criticism grew over the years, the underlying assumption and prevailing consent remained the same: female empowerment through economic participation. This book confronts such theoretical assumption with empirical knowledge obtained in the course of 23 interviews conducted with self-employed Igbo business women in Enugu (Nigeria). The underlying hypothesis is that the interviewees' economic participation is rather a temporal survival strategy based on the challenging economic conditions than a deliberately chosen means to female empowerment.

In the first stage, the relative technical efficiency is estimated with data envelopment analysis (DEA) to establish benchmarking company, then, they are ranked according to their technical efficiency. Mann whiney- U test in the second stage was used to determine the factors affecting efficiency. The concept of efficiency concerns is an insurer's ability to produce a given set of outputs (such as premiums and investment income) via the use of inputs such as administrative and general expenses and financial capital. The insurance company is said to be technically efficient if it cannot reduce its input usage without some corresponding reduction in outputs, given the current state of production technology in the industry. The technical efficiency of Ethiopian insurance companies during the study period was 86.7%, 97.1% and 84.9% in technical efficiency, pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency, respectively. Sources of economic growth have variously been empirically analyzed. Traditionally, explanation of growth considered physical capital factors and then effective labour. In the past, much of the planning in Nigeria was centered on the accumulation of physical capital without recognition of the important role played, by human capital on rapid growth and development process. This informed the researcher to see how human capital accumulation affects growth in Nigeria. Answer was also sought to whether (or not) the level of education attainment significantly determine rate of economic growth. A number of estimation procedures were carried out. The data series were tested for stationarity using the Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test as the starting point to assess the order of integration with the aid of econometric views (E-view version 3.1) and two multiple regression models were estimated using ordinary least square method. Based on the findings of this study, physical capital, labour force and human capital were significant factors determine growth in Nigeria over time.

Using Ilaje people of Ondo State as a case, this paper, through qualitative methods of study, examines the factors of history, elite politics, and the state in identity formulation and the effects which the construction of the "other" among a supposed homogeneous group has on the existing forms of social relationship. It is established from the study that though the advantage of the oil producing community identity is utilized to attain political and economic height, the identity remains subordinate to a much larger and inclusive Ilaje identity. Generally, this paper is a reflection on how identity is manipulated even in the local context to suit competition for resources. It discusses the cultural creation of space and its hegemonization in quest of making exclusive and optimum advantage of resource in the space. The paper concludes that even when the spatial differentiation is yet to generate any remarkable conflict, the feelings of "oneness" appears to have been sufficiently weakened.

The energy crisis in Nigeria is such that has brought about development setbacks, environmental degradation, increased poverty rate, etc and these must be addressed to bring about socio-economic development. The key to improving energy access lies in the ability of the government to include renewable energy sources like solar, wind energy, geothermal energy, biomass, as part of the nation's energy mix. However, the government can only achieve this feat where private investors (domestic and foreign) are actively involved. The Renewable energy industry in Nigeria is driven by Policies and most recently, the National Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Policy, 2015. Policies in Nigeria have been criticised for lacking in implementation, consistency, stability and lacking binding effects. These factors send the wrong signals to potential investors who need to be assured of security over investments made. Thus, it is therfore pertinent to have a legislation on renewable energy that would complement already existing policies and guarantee justice in event of a breach. The law can create an enabling environment for potential investors to drive renewable energy development in Nigeria.

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2012 in the subject History - Africa, grade: none, , course: African Borderland History, language: English, abstract: This study offers a compelling revision of the meagre Nigerian historiography on the Bakassi Peninsula. It argues that Nigeria's claim of ownership of the Peninsula is logically indefensible and historically unsustainable. Zimbabwe was affected by successive droughts which negatively affected rainfed maize production which most rural households rely on for subsistence. As a result, there was widespread food insecurity in many wards throughout the country. In response to the drought, the Ministry of Women Affairs, Gender and community, in 2005 introduced drought tolerant cassava as a substitute for maize. The objective of the cassava production, processing and marketing project was to ensure food security at household level. In Marondera district, the focus of this book, 50 women residing in rural wards were initially targeted with the hope that they will distribute cassava planting material to other women willing to take part in the project. However after four years, very few women are still growing cassava and the targeted wards still experience the worst food insecurity in the district. The study found that the factors that contributed to the failure of the project include poor project planning and management, unrealistic objectives, poor beneficiary participation, budgetary constraints, negative beliefs about cassava, absence of a well developed market and the operating environment.

We have demonstrated, however, that comprehensive and humanistic approaches are not necessarily mutually exclusive for they can be mutually inclusive and reinforcing as regards to implementation of NEEDS in Nigeria. This study focused on the role of World Bank in public and private sector reforms in Nigeria between 1999 and 2007.

Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, grade: 65, Aston University, language: English, abstract: The slow and deteriorating performance of the electricity power sector over the last few decades triggered the Federal Government of Nigeria to embark on a power sector reform program. This study examines the impact of the power sector reform (restructuring and privatization) on the performance of the electricity sector in Nigeria over the past twenty-five (25) years. Relevant electricity indicators are used to access the performance changes in three significant period; pure state-ownership, transition (restructuring and unbundling) and full privatization of the sector. The study also assesses how the effect of the economic environment, regulatory governance and political climate/effectiveness within the period contributes to the improvements in the electricity sector. The results shows that privatization is associated with improvement in the technical efficiency, access to electricity, electricity consumption per capita and an increase in electricity tariff in the sector. Furthermore, the results highlight the significant relationship between regulatory governance and a robust economy on the performance changes observed in the power industry.

Examined here are the legal and practical reasons for the inefficiency of the legal framework of creditor protection in Nigeria. This is amply justified considering the critical role of credit in the promotion of economic growth and development and also bearing in mind the near calamitous consequences the 2009 financial crisis unleashed not only among Nigerian banks and financial institutions, and in the international financial system. The latter nearly led to socioeconomic catastrophe in Nigeria, as well as globally. It is hoped that book is found useful by government, policy makers, academics, corporate financial experts, investment bankers and other stakeholders to initiate and implement efficient policy actions to protect creditors in order to sustain the flow of credit, the engine of any economy.

The present study entitled "Tree-crop interaction studies in Plum (Prunus domestica L.) Based Agroforestry System in Kullu valley of Himachal Pradesh" have revealed that field crop performed poorly under agrihorticulture system in comparison to pure crops. The studies have further indicated that plum compete strongly with maize for moisture, nutrients and other resources. Plum suppressed crop growth and productivity significantly on north side and closer distance from the tree row. It is further deduced from the studies that soil fertility status was higher under agrihorticulture system than sole cropping. Nutrient availability was more at closer distance. The effect of direction on available nutrients was statistically non-significant. Addition of nutrients was found higher in agrihorticulture system than sole cropping. The removal of nutrients from different harvested components was higher in agrihorticulture system than sole cropping. Among nutrient elements studied the pattern of removal was: N > K > P. The phosphorus was depleted more in both the systems and showed net loss whereas; N and K have shown net gain.

Polemic Paper from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, , language: English, abstract: President Ronald Reagan promoted and passed into law provisions of an economic plan that came to be known as Reaganomics. The principles of his plan were based on the neoliberal economic theory originally developed by Friedrich Hayek and Ludwig Von Mises of the Austrian school of economics. The major principles followed by Reaganomics were as follows: 1) totally free markets, devoid of government intervention are the best way to promote economic growth and personal freedom, 2) the government should refrain from any interference economic matters, 3) taxes should be kept at as low as possible to stimulate economic growth, 4) government regulations should be eliminated except those that ensure contracts, 5) government should not own businesses or property and should privatize those that it does own, and 6) international trade should be promoted by removing all tariffs and quotas. Laws and policies based on neoliberalism were passed from 1981 through 2008 in the US and have had influence on the national economy down to the present. Based on analysis of economic results and political developments during the period this paper argues that Reaganomics and neoliberalism have failed to improve economic growth and the preserve personal freedom above that provided by of the Welfare State which has developed in the US and OECD countries for more than a hundred years. The application of Solar Photovoltaic (PV) based electrification is imperative in the Nigerian context as a response to electricity supply problems faced by the citizens. In this study, the potentials of Solar, Small Hydro and Biomass resources in the country were highlighted. For the purpose of this research, Imo State Nigeria was used as a case study area where different views of interviewed respondents and Solar PV experts were analyzed and discussed. Results from the research show that initial cost, lack of information and awareness, and technological drawbacks are among the biggest barriers to the implementation and absorption of PV systems in the area. The need for the deployment of this technology in Nigeria was addressed and the study argued that PV systems could help increase energy efficiency and encourage local development. This study recommends the incorporation of Solar PV as an alternative supplement to the existing electricity supply system and suggests ways of tackling the identified barriers.

Master's Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Economics - Economic Cycle and Growth, grade: M.Phil/PhD, University of Ibadan, course: Economis, language: English, abstract: This study examined the relationship between tax structure and economic growth in Nigeria using annual data between 1970 to 2007. The motivation is to track the impact of the observed change in the tax structure on economic growth in order to inform policy. Two tax structures namely pre Value Added Tax (VAT) and post VAT were identified and their impacts evaluated. The empirical analysis was anchored on the endogenous growth theoretical framework which allowed for linking tax structures to growth. Econometric models were then developed to explore the relationship between the identified tax structures and economic growth. The first model present a growth equation with average tax rate variable, while the second model is where the specific tax variables were included alongside variables in the first model. The third, fourth and fifth models were used to test the robustness of the second model. This was accomplished basically by introducing additional variables. Prior to the empirical estimations, the standard tests of unit root and co-integration analysis were conducted to ascertain the appropriate estimation procedure and technique(s) to use. The unit root test show that all the variables of the models are stationary at the first difference, while the co-integration analysis indicates that one model ...

The dynamism of religion all over the world presupposes that discourse on it generally is a continuous exercise. As religion influences the environment of its operation so also is the influence of the environment on the practice of religion. Nigeria, a multi-religious nation has experienced and is still experiencing the positive as well the negative aspects of religious practices in her socio-political, economic and cultural spheres. There is no doubt that religion is manipulated by some people, which portray it in bad light and makes it vulnerable to criticisms despite the unanimity about its potential to be a force for good in the society. Recent developments in Nigeria indicate that religion has a role in the survival or otherwise of the country. Such include the re-introduction of Sharicah penal code in some states in the northern part of the country, the emergence of Islamic banks, proliferation of private faith-based tertiary institutions, emergence of different factions and sects in religions and the challenge of insurgency using religion as camouflage in the name of the Boko Haram. This book addresses contemporary issues in the use of religion in Nigeria. Its uniqueness lies in the calibre of notable scholars who contributed to it from various ethno-religious and geographical backgrounds. It contains the views of eminent scholars from Islam and Christianity and is jointly edited by experienced professors in the two faiths. The overall aim is to enhance better understa...

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: A, Obafemi Awolowo University (Post Graduate), course: History, language: English, abstract: Since the arrival of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) at its shores via the great IMF debate of 1985, Nigerian leaders have learnt to demonise public enterprises, castigating them, facilitating their sales to cronies of government officials and using the channels of mass communication to impress upon the citizens that these enterprises are of no use. Today, the general wisdom is that the state should completely recede and that private ownership of the means of production is the only viable approach to efficient production of goods and services, economic growth and development. However, the same factors that led to the collapse of the public enterprises are also afflicting the privatisation exercise. In this paper, the practice of privatisation meant to promote private means of ownership and in turn increase the production capacity of every sector is critically examined. Focusing on the wave and sad experience of privatisation in a period of 2000-2012 which was riddled with corruption, nepotism, lack of good corporate governance and incompetent manpower in the country, the paper concludes that total privatisation of every sector will never solve the economic impasse of Nigeria.

The approaches used are the data envelopment analysis (DEA) and DEA-based Malmquist productivity index. In addition, a second-stage tobit regression is estimated to determine the possible causes of inefficiency. Mean scores in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination are used as output while gross enrolments, pupil-classes ratio and pupil-teacher ratio are used as inputs. In the second stage, a dummy variable to capture the location of the district is included in the model. The analysis of Tobit regression shows a negative significant relationship between Pupil Teacher Ratio is and efficiency thus high pupil teacher ratio is associated with inefficiency. Districts located in urban areas are found to perform better than their rural counterparts.

For over one decade the Govt of Nigeria has spent huge sums of money in hydrocarbon exploration of the Nigerian sector of the Chad Basin without success, as no oil or gas discovery has been made in the region. Meanwhile, most researchers and scholars on petroleum potentials in Nigeria have concentrated mostly in the southern basins while little geophysical work has been carried out in the Chad Basin. The book utilizes the Well log data from 23 oil wells in Chad Basin Nigeria to analyze the basin prospect to generate liquid or gas hydrocarbon. The geothermal gradient map of the basin was constructed from bottom hole temperature data. The heat flow values of the various stratigraphic units were then evaluated. Average geothermal gradient of 3.4 oC/100 m within the range of 3.0 to 4.4 oC/100 m was obtained. The oil-generating zone in the basin is expected to occur within the depth range of 1273 m and 4100 m while the average depth to oil floor for the basin is 3626 m. Mean heat flow vary from 63.6 to 105.6 mWm-2, with an average of 80.6 mWm-2. The result serves as a learning guide for students and researchers in the academic and oil industry.

Secondly, it purports to uphold the rule of law, and as well, guarantee the preservation of human rights. As it is assumed that effective strategies adopted and properly implemented by a nation have the tendency to accelerate progress in the development of the said nation, this work examined some strategies for sustainable development in Nigeria. It highlighted existing strategies for development in the country, examined progress and challenges in implementing the strategies, and further identified measures which when adopted and implemented, will likely change the social, economic, and political condition of the country for economic growth and sustainable development.

Input-output analysis is probably the most practical tool of economic analysis. It is the main tool to help us answer three key questions that pertain to the whole economic system. In terms of efficiency and productivity growth, what's the performance of an economy? What is the comparative advantage of an economy compared with the rest of the world? How do policies and measures affect the whole economic system when environmental constrains are taken into account? Of course, many other interesting questions can be posed. The first three chapters in this book introduce three important practices of input-output analysis in China in the fields of water shadow price evaluating and predicting, building energy efficiency impacts evaluating, unfair importation impacts calculating. The last chapter is the advanced research in nonlinear input-output model. The methods and results are quite general, and this feature facilitates the use of the book as a reference source, particularly by applied economists and macro economic managers.

The study is deeply grounded in an extensive literature on the research works in the related area and on compensation hypothesis, efficiency hypothesis, and credible commitment hypothesis. An empirical analysis of economic and social data of twenty-three OECD countries was performed for the period between 1960 and 2013 to test the hypothesis. The hypothesis, more government expenditure leads to greater globalization was not rejected. Hence, it was proved by empirical investigation that more social expenditure leads to more economic openness.
