Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurological disorder that affects over 1.6 million children each year. Previous researchers have determined that the cause is still unknown, although genetics and environmental factors are under study. One environmental factor is the association between excessive television viewing prior to the age of 2 and attention problems by age 7, although these researchers have presented inconsistent findings. This quantitative quasi-experimental design utilized a convenience sample of parents of children ages 7 to 10 years, with and without ADHD diagnosis, to determine who watched more television, and if there is a relationship between excessive television viewing, hyperactivity/impulsivity, and inattention. The framework supporting this study included both biological data on ADHD/ brain development and the social learning theory, suggesting that children who view excessive amounts of television may have higher rates of ADHD symptoms. Research questions were analyzed using chi square analyses and ANOVA. This is an important contribution to the existing literature and would enhance social change initiatives.

The timing of work over the day or week is fundamental to the nature of paid work and the interaction between work and leisure. However, due to data limitations, little research has been done on the timing of work in Australia. The Australian Time Use Survey, conducted nationally by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in 1992 and 1997, provides a unique opportunity to examine actual work timing arrangements in the Australian workforce.The first half of the book examines the incidence, characteristics and growth of work at non-standard times of day during the 1990s, a period of substantial structural and institutional change in the Australian labour market. The second half investigates how dual earner couples with children coordinate their work schedules to reduce their dependence on formal child care. The findings show that the traditional gender division of household labour is evident in the work timing patterns of Australian couples, but for couples where both work full-time, this may be an inefficient response to economic incentives. The book will be of use to academics and policy makers with an interest in the Australian labour market and work and family issues.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of a cognitive behavioral group counseling program on the learned resourcefulness level and automatic thought patterns of fifth grade elementary school students. Children's Version of Self-Control Schedule (C-SCS) and Cognitive Triad Inventory for Children (CTI-C) were given to 232 fifth grade students. An experimental design with one training and two control groups (placebo-attention and no-treatment) and three measurements (pre, post, and follow-up) were used. 45 students (27 males, 18 females) who had low learned resourcefulness and negative automatic thought patterns were randomly assigned to the training and two control groups. 'Cognitive Behavioral Group Counseling (CBGC)Program ' was implemented to the training group students over a period of 15 sessions. Contrary to the expectations, the results indicated that 'CBGC Program' did not improve learned resourcefulness levels and increase positive automatic thought patterns of students.

This book examined the effects of Social Skills Training (SST) on two matched groups of juveniles in a detention facility in Ghana. The purpose was to determine whether SST would improve on juvenile delinquent behaviour. Test scores on delinquent behaviour were compared across two groups; (1) 25 juveniles who underwent SST and (2) 25 matched control group of juveniles who did not undergo SST. Participants in the training group underwent a one month SST. Pre and post- test scores on Experimental and Control Groups were obtained. The results supported the hypothesis that overall SST has significant positive effects on juvenile delinquent behaviour. The book would be useful to institutions responsible for youth training, researchers and students of Psychology and Sociology.

The present study was an attempt to assess religious orientation, psychological distress and frustration as well as to find out relationship of religious orientation with psychological distress and frustration among parents of mentally retarded children. Parents of mentally retarded children were compared on religious orientation, psychological distress and frustration with respect to their gender, education, residence and child's level of retardation. The results showed significant negative correlation between intrinsic religious orientation and psychological distress and significant positive correlation was found between extrinsic religious orientation and psychological distress. The results also showed significant difference among parents of mentally retarded children on frustration with respect to their residence. Significant difference was also found among parents of mentally retarded children on intrinsic religious orientation and psychological distress with respect to their gender, educational qualification and their child's level of retardation.

This study investigated the effect of incorporating Dance/Movement Therapy techniques before and after standard physical restraint procedures for violence prevention in order to increase effectiveness of the intervention. Effectiveness is defined as improved therapeutic dynamics and empathy between the participants. This study was conducted at the Terry Children's Psychiatric Center in New Castle, Delaware, USA. Participants included children and staff. Children were asked about their experiences in therapeutic holds in order to qualitatively document their experience and inform the Workshop. Adult participants attended a four-hour Dance/Movement Therapy Training Workshop to learn to integrate Dance/Movement Therapy techniques with normal restraint procedures. Pre and Post intervention information was gathered using a mixed methodology approach, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative methods. A model of the Dance/Movement Therapy training course was developed and executed as a project. It was found that the D/MT training increased adult empathy, awareness, and confidence in the procedure.

The development of an independent and efficient walking is one of the major targets for children with cerebral palsy especially those with spastic diplegic type of cerebral palsy. The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of unweighing system during treadmill versus over ground walking on gait pattern in children with spastic diplegia. Sixty children with spastic diplegia from both sexes with mean age 7.4 years participated in this study. They were classified into three groups of equal number, (one control and two study groups). Gait pattern was assessed using the Biodex Gait Trainer II and Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM) for all groups before and after three months of the application of the treatment program. The results of this study revealed statistically significant improvement (P<0.05) in the measured variables ((walking speed, step length, time on each foot and GMFM score) for both study groups in favor to first study group. Therefore it's better to uses the unweighing system with over ground walking as an additional therapeutic modality to improve gait pattern and functional abilities of diplegic children.

BACKGROUND: Critical reflection (CR) is an essential skill for expert clinical practice in various professions. The primary purpose of this study was to determine the effect of specific written feedback pro­vided by a coordinating faculty member (CC) on students' CR ability demonstrated in written journal entries.METHODS: A single cohort of students was divided into two groups. Students submitted weekly journal entries via e-mail. The submissions were read and the demonstrated CR was scored on a 5-point scale. Specific feedback from the CC was provided to Group1 during the first 8-week internship and Group 2 during the last 8-week internship.RESULTS: Few statistical differences were noted. Descriptively, the removal of specific feedback during the second 8-weeks appeared to have a negative effect on CR. The addition of specific feedback during the second 8-weeks may or may not have had an effect. CONCLUSION: It is still undetermined whether specific feedback makes a difference in CR ability as reflected in journal writing. However, it does appear that the timing and continuation of feedback once provided may be a factor in student performance.
