The purpose of the present study is to develop an understanding of how iron carbide layers, derived from the different microstructures of carbon steels during corrosion, affect corrosion behavior and inhibitor performance. A series of similar pieces of seven different types of ferrous metals were immersed in each crude oil separately for 15, 30 and 45 days. The inhibition efficiency of the Chlorophenical and Hydralazine increases with increasing inhibitor but decreases with increase of temperature. The mechanism of the inhibition action attributed due to the adsorption of inhibitor on the surface of the metal, for which this adsorption process obeys Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The electrochemical Tafel analysis shows that the inhibitor acts as a mixed type, and gets adsorbed by either physically or chemically. Surface study was done by scanning electron microscopic method due to the formation of protective film on the metal surface.

More than 250 indigenous trees and plants with healing properties have been scientifically catalogued in Ghana. Unfortunately, the very foundation upon which the medicinal plant species and the traditional health care system survive is threatened by deforestation. The rate of deforestation has increased by 50% over the last ten years, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The current area of intact forest is now estimated at between 10.9 and 11.8% of the original cover and 6.9% of the country's total area. Deforestation is changing the habitats of disease-carrying insects and creating conditions that may help to spread malaria, river blindness and other devastating illnesses. Moreover, since the majority of the rural poor in Ghana depends on traditional medicine for their health care needs, the present high rate of deforestation will have a detrimental effect on the heath care delivery system in the country. Important plant species will be lost to deforestation unless urgent measures are taken. This paper examines the impact of deforestation on medicinal plants in Ghana.

Today, coffee is one of the most popular and most consumed beverages worldwide. We studied the effect of different concentrations of coffee on peak expiratory flow rate(PEFR), blood pressure and pulse rate in an attempt to determine some physiological effects of coffee intake. 18 apparently healthy adult males, age range 20 to 30 years, were recruited for the study over a three day period. Varying concentrations (2g, 4g and 6g) of Nescafe Instant Coffee were administered. 2g coffee concentration was given on the first day, 4g on the second day and 6g on the third. The control measurements were taken on the first day of the experimental procedure in all subjects. This study suggests that 2g of coffee does not give maximum cardio-respiratory effects. The peak effect that coffee can exhibit on PEFR and cardiovascular system was seen from 4g coffee concentration; but there was no significant difference when compared with 6g concentration. Only in DBP and PR were significant changes observed when 2g concentration was administered. It further indicates that, mild doses of coffee confer benefits on airflow in the lungs. Dielectric used for the study was EDM oil. Experiments were conducted based on L9 orthogonal array. The experimental study on the effect of input parameters i.e. current, pulse on time and pulse off time on output parameters material removal rate (MRR), tool wear rate (TWR) and surface roughness (SR). The workpiece materials selected were AISI D2 steel and SS 316. The tool electrode used was Aluminium and EDM oil as dielectric fluid. Taguchi design of experiments was used to design experiments, L9 orthogonal array was applied using MINITAB software. Signal to noise ratio and ANOVA were employed for parameter optimization and to achieve max MRR, min TWR and SR. The results indicate that the most influencing factor for MRR is Pulse off time. For TWR, the most influencing factor is current. For SR, the most influencing factor is pulse on time.

It was emphasized to engineering abiotic stress tolerance in blackgram by overexpression of the glyoxalase I gene isolated from Brassica juncea under a most widely used CaMV 35S promoter. We have demonstrated for the first the applicability of the glyoxalase system in imparting abiotic stress tolerance in a crop legume Vigna mungo. The transgenic lines were confirmed for gene insertion using different molecular techniques. The expression pattern of the inserted gene/s confirmed the expression and activity of the gene in the all transgenic lines studied up to T2 generations. The in vitro raised plants are usually sensitive to hardening process as well as transplantation. In case of blackgram, the survival rate during hardening and the transplantation was ca. 65-70%. To improve the percentage survival of plants, plant growth promoting Rhizobium and Arbuscular Mycorrhizal fungi were applied during the hardening and transplantation. This resulted in overall survival rate of plants up to 90% in both the transgenics as well as the untransformed control plants. Effect of Rhizobium and Mycorrhiza on transgenic as well as the untransformed control plants was studied. We reported for the first time that the transgenic nature of the plant does not affect association of the plant growth promoting Rhizobacteria or Mycorrhiza. Alleviates transplantation shock of in vitro grown Vigna mungo plants was also observed.

This study estimates the effect of the unemployment insurance wage replacement rate on reemployment wages in the U.S. using the sample of men in the 1996 and 2001 Surveys of Income and Program Participation. I model employment search behavior in a dynamic discrete time hazard setting with three possible outcomes: finding a full-time job, finding a part-time job, or staying unemployed (continuing the job search). I find that reemployment wages decrease with the unemployment insurance wage replacement rate. Furthermore, the wage replacement rate depresses the prospect of finding full-time work while increasing the prospect of finding part-time work.

Technical demands for magnesium alloys are sufficient room, and elevated temperature mechanical properties, as well as corrosion resistance according to desired application. A new class of magnesium alloys based on the Mg-Sn system has been studied with many ternary alloying elements with emphasis on the Mg-Sn-Ca system due to their attractive property profile especially concerning creep resistance. This research work investigates the effect of 3 wt.% Al additions on two selected Mg- Sn-Ca alloys namely the Mg-3Sn-2Ca (TX32) alloy, and the Mg-9Sn-1Ca (TX91)alloy at different temper conditions, with the aim of improving room temperature mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance. A comparison of experimental results for the new Mg-Sn-Al-Ca (TAX) alloys, with their base Mg-Sn-Ca (TX) alloys, is performed, and explicitly discussed. The results showed enhanced hardening response in some of the alloys while the corrosion resistance deteriorated significantly. Al additions were found to have a favorable effect on strength of Mg-Sn-Ca(TX) alloys while they caused rapid decrease in their corrosion resistance.

In recent years, Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) developed into mature photon detectors which are chosen in a wide field of applications. However, the dark count rate (DCR) of SiPMs sets strong limitations to such detector systems. This quantity describes the rate at which pulses are generated in the absence of light (dark pulses) and deteriorate the photon counting performance of SiPMs.In the course of the presented research, two innovative characterization methods were developed for the identification and evaluation of the physical effects which underlie the generation of dark pulses in SiPMs.The first method is based on the temperature dependence of the DCR. It allows for the extraction of different contributions to the dark count rate, which (a) depend on the applied voltage, (b) depend on the applied overvoltage and are quasi-independent of the electric field. The second method is based on the detection and mapping of the light intensity which is emitted by the effect of hot carrier luminescence during the avalanche breakdowns of SiPM micro-cells. This method enables a sub-micro-cell, 2D spatially resolved measurement of the dark count rate within the plane of the active area. In particular, the individual contributions of implantation and radiation induced defects to the DCR were evaluated via this method.The acquired knowledge was used to successfully suppress the dark count rate of KETEK SiPMs down to a level of 40 kHz/mm².

Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Biology - Botany, grade: 1, , language: English, abstract: The increase of metals pollution in soil is a worldwide problem that effects the health of humans and environment. The use of green technology such as phytoremediation is one the environmental friendly technique, in which plants and other microbes are used to reduce the level of metals contaminants in soil and lower its uptake towards plants tissues. Studies reported a number of cereal crops such as wheat and medicinal plants like alfalfa accumulate heavy metals in their tissues at higher concentrations. In the present study, we investigated the effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on wheat and alfalfa plants with the increase of zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) concentrations in soil. After eight weeks of pot experiment, roots colonization, shoot and root biomass, growth, heavy metals contents and other biochemical parameters were assessed. The results indicated mycorrhizal inoculated (M) plants performed better at moderate Zn and Cd concentrations. In addition, higher phosphorus contents were observed in M treated plants as compared to NM plants. Results indicated that AMF inoculum exhibit different tolerance strategies to reduce metals toxicity in host plants. The effective mycorrhizal symbiosis was observed with wheat and alfalfa plants and can be useful for phytostabilization of metals contaminated soils which can play a vital role in increase of plants prod...

Vehicular pollution aroused due to rapid urbanization & industrialization. Vehicles emit cocktails of pollutants which pose serious threat to plants & humans. In present study the concentrations of SO2 and NO2, particulate matter (PM) were estimated. The presence of metals and PAHs in PM were biomonitored using plants. The study was performed to know whether presence of these pollutants in PM have any genotoxic effect or not and for this, the genotoxicity of urban air pollutants using Tradescantia pallida micronucleus bioassay was performed. In present study air pollution tolerance index (APTI) of different plant species were calculated. Taking into consideration of APTI and various biological and socio-economic characters of these plants species, anticipated performance index (API) were also calculated. The findings show that on the basis of API, plants can be suggested for green belt development in urban areas to ameliorated urban air pollution.

The current study was undertaken to investigate time-dependent toxic effect of sub-lethal dose of orally administered Aluminium Chloride in male rabbits (oryctolagus cuniculus) on the histology of renal tisues. Animals were divided into control and treated groups. Animals of treated group received Aluminium Chloride at the dose rate of 25 mg/kg disolved in 0.9% saline solution after every 48 hours, for 15 and 30 days respectively while animals of control group were given 0.9% saline solution only. Animals were dissected with the interval of 15 days. Renal tissues were processed and stained by Hematoxylin and Eosin for Histological studies. Histological changes induced in the renal tissues of treated animals were observed. The basic purpose of this research was to administer the toxicity of Aluminium Cholride in Kidney of rabbits.

This paper analyses the liquidity effect in Norway by examining the relationship between a range of liquidity variables and five different measures of the short-term interbank premium. In a floor system the key policy rate is equal to banks' deposit rate in the central bank, and as such, this analysis provides new information on the liquidity effect in a floor system. Both excess liquidity (total central bank reserves in the banking system) and structural liquidity (central bank reserves in the system before Norges Banks' market operations) have, as expected, a negative a significant effect on almost all dependent variables. Furthermore, in periods of financial turmoil European and Norwegian banks may face higher USD rates in the interbank market either because of a general USD liquidity premium or an institution specific credit premium. My analysis provides additional insight in the division between the liquidity premium and the credit premium in a way, to my knowledge, not done in earlier literature. The results indicate that during the financial crisis (2007-2009) the liquidity premium dominated in USD as the availability of credit deteriorated.

This study tries to analyze the effect of the privatization of the electricity sector in Cameroon on the poor drawing from the various literatures on the privatization debate. It addresses government inability to efficiently provide public utilities, due to accountability issues and the absence of competition present in the markets. The effects of privatizing electricity are examine in relation to the changes privatization has had on service quality, changes in price, area of coverage and rate of connectivity and unemployment, as determinants of access of the utility to the poor.These changes are attributed to the profit motive of private firms rather than general welfare and weakness of government regulatory systems to check market abuse.The study suggest pro poor tagetting strategies for private providers and mechanisms to improve public sector efficiency in providing basic utilities like electricity.

This piece of work try address the volatility impacts on export through an extenvsive analysis. The econometric analysis was employed to exploit the theory of cointegration, given the obvious non- stationarity of the time series. The study used Engle-Granger two step procedures. Three measures of exchange rate volatilities were used and produced mixed results. The mean adjusted relative change (V) as a measure of exchange rate volatility indicated positive and insignificant impact on real exports of Namibia. The moving average standard deviation (MASD) as a measure of exchange rate volatility produced a negative insignificant impact of exchange rate volatility on real exports of Namibia. The last measure of exchange rate volatility was the general autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (GARCH), which indicated a positive and significant impact of exchange rate volatility on Namibia's real exports. These results suggest that Namibia should start exploring possibility of macro-economic policy independence and be involved in the determination of exchange rate within the CMA framework.

Effect of MW, thermal and/or athermal, is inconclusive, complex, and controversial in literature. Thermal effect causes thermogenic effect while athermal effects are other than heat and such effects reported as somatic effect and/or genetic effect. This study basically deals with the athermal effects and is aimed at investigating the hypothesis that the exposure of microbial cells to MW (low power) may cause athermal effect, which affect on growth of microbes, enzyme activity, and production of exopolysaccharides. Furthermore, we have also checked the effect of different intracellular enzymes on MW treated bacteria. Our study also gives information that MW athermal effects causes changes at genetic level and can be passed on to next generation.There are numerous and increasing applications of MW energy and technology in the industries, in homes, in medical, research institutions etc., and there is greater awareness and concern of the public over the suspected potential health hazards associated with such exposures [ICNIRP Guidelines, 1998]. Available literature from research on sweet potato focused more on tuber yields with little or no attention paid to foliage yield and quality. Unfortunately, Information about feeding value, extent and evolution of feeding practices of vine as a feed source is not much known due to lack of knowledge about the crop, and its use for animal feed. Furthermore, information on supplementation of livestock diets with sweet potato vines in Ethiopia is not sufficient. Therefore, the current study was designed to evaluate the effect of substituting sweet potato vines with concentrate mix at increasing levels on feed intake, growth performance and carcass traits of Sidama goats.

Project Report from the year 2014 in the subject Biology - Botany, grade: 1,6, LMU Munich, language: English, abstract: In the following experiments the aim is to analyse the presence of proteins on different levels, comparing dark grown and light grown plants. In part A the samples are being analysed on transcript level, determining the amount of transcripts for LHC, POR and ALB4. The author also compares transcription levels of those proteins in Wild-type plants and ΔdsbA mutants, which have PSII deficiency. For controlling the 18S rRNA is being used, which is a housekeeping gene and should be equally expressed in all samples. In part B there will be a comparison between the same samples on protein level by protein isolation, Coomassie staining and immunostaining with antibodies. Here the author also focuses on the proteins ALB4, LHC and POR. Furthermore, in organelle labelling was performed, which should show differences in protein levels between chloroplasts and etioplasts. Part C is focusing on the light-harvesting complexes, which developed during de-etoilation of dark grown seedlings. A semi-native gel electrophoresis was performed and chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b amounts were measured. As samples the wild-type, ΔdsbA and alb3 mutants were used and compared to each other.
