Mathematical Understanding for Secondary Teaching. A Framework and Classroom-Based Situations

A perennial discussion about teacher development is the optimal content background for teachers. Inrecent years, that discussion has taken center stage in the work of mathematics education researchers, mathematicians, mathematics professional developers, and mathematics education policymakers. Muchof the existing and prior work in this area has been directed toward mathematical knowledge forteaching at the elementary level. The work described in this volume takes a sometimes-neglectedapproach, focusing on the dynamic nature of mathematical understanding rather than on a stabledescription of mathematical knowledge, and on mathematics for secondary teaching rather thanmathematics for teaching at the elementary level. The work reported in Mathematical Understanding for Secondary Teaching: A Framework and Classroom-Based Situations is a practice-basedresponse to the question of what mathematical understandings secondary teachers could productively use in their teaching. For each of more than 50events, our team of almost 50 mathematics educators who were experienced mathematics teachers developed descriptions of the mathematics thatteachers could use-each of those descriptions (consisting of the event and the mathematics related to the event) is what we call a Situation. Wedeveloped our Framework for Mathematical Understanding for Secondary Teaching (MUST) based on an analysis of our entire set of Situations. Wecall the work practice-based because the MUST framework is based on actu...

Besides running schools, colleges and universities, Government of Nepal has used a large amount of money for educational programmes. But when a teacher enters the class to teach, it is found that they are bound to use traditional methods of teaching in spite of using participatory pedagogies. This book reflects on 'teaching as a culture' in the context of Nepal. It is an autoethnography of a high school teacher who has spent more than two decades in teaching mathematics in secondary schools of Nepal. Basically, this book focuses on how the writer learned mathematics in his school and university days, how his learning is reflected on his teaching, what experiences did he achieve from his classroom practices, what sorts of changes did he bring in his classroom, and the most important part is why is he not able to use participatory pedagogies in teaching mathematics in the classroom even though he is enriched by several student-centred teaching learning methods. This book will be useful for school teachers, students, school principals, school administrators, curriculum makers and analysts, researchers, and project executives especially in the educational sectors.

Language and Mathematics Education. Multiple Perspectives and Directions for Research

A volume in Research in Mathematics EducationSeries Editor Barbara J. Dougherty, Iowa State UniversityMarketing description: Issues of language in mathematics learning and teaching are important for bothpractical and theoretical reasons. Addressing issues of language is crucial for improving mathematicslearning and teaching for students who are bilingual, multilingual, or learning English. These issues are alsorelevant to theory: studies that make language visible provide a complex perspective of the role of languagein reasoning and learning mathematics. What is the relevant knowledge base to consider when designingresearch studies that address issues of language in the learning and teaching of mathematics? Whatscholarly literature is relevant and can contribute to research? In order to address issues of language inmathematics education, researchers need to use theoretical perspectives that integrate current views ofmathematics learning and teaching with current views on language, discourse, bilingualism, and secondlanguage acquisition. This volume contributes to the development of such integrated approaches to research on language issues in mathematicseducation by describing theoretical perspectives for framing the study of language issues and methodological issues to consider when designingresearch studies. The volume provides interdisciplinary reviews of the research literature from four very different perspectives: mathematics education(Moschkovich), Cultural-Historical-A...

Jan Salma Role of Language in Teaching . Learning of Mathematical Word Problems

My interest to understand role of language in teaching and learning mathematical word problems evoked from my teaching and learning experiences. When I look back at my own learning experiences of mathematics at the secondary level, I remember that on a majority of occasions I felt handicapped in understanding the language of the text, especially in mathematics. This is because the language of teaching and learning mathematics is underestimated by teachers. Likewise, during my teaching I realized the need to find out about the role of language in teaching and learning word problems. As I observed students facing difficulties in understanding word problems presented in English. As a result, I wondered as to what extent language played a crucial role in understanding mathematical word problems. Was the role of language in mathematics being ignored? why did one need to understand the language of teaching and learning mathematics? These questions kept bothering me especially when I came across word problems because I believed that language and mathematical word problems were strongly related. Consequently, this book examines the connection between language and mathematical word problems.

Sam Curran Is The Van Hiele Model Useful in Determining How Children Learn Geometry.

Scientific Study from the year 2014 in the subject Pedagogy - School Pedagogics, grade: 82, , course: Mathematics Teaching, language: English, abstract: The aim of this study is to investigate how children learn Geometry (at all levels of compulsory education) in Mathematics. This study was chosen because of my difficulties in the area and the possible under-representation of Geometry in the Mathematics Curriculum. Five tasks were given to two students for each Key Stage 1-5 inclusive. These were then analysed using the "Van Hiele model of Geometric" reasoning; which was used to make an assessment of children's geometrical ability. The study also draws on theoretical frameworks from eminent researchers like Vygotsky, Piaget and Bruner as well as engaging fully with current educational literature and research. A questionnaire on Geometry was also completed by a variety of primary, secondary and A-level mathematics teachers. It was found that geometrical ability increases with age (although young children can display sophisticated knowledge of shape) and that students mainly drew shapes of a non-prototypical orientation. This has increased my subject knowledge and enhanced my classroom practice and also may have the implication of changing other practitioners' teaching strategies.

A third is related to the verb "to critique", meaning "to analyze the merits and faults of". The authorscontributing to this book pose challenging questions, from multiple perspectives, about the roles of mathematics insociety and the implications for education. Traditional reasons for teaching mathematics include: preparing a newgeneration of mathematics researchers and a cadre of technically competent users of mathematics; training students tothink logically; and because mathematics is as much part of cultural heritage as literature or music. These reasons remainvalid, though open to critique, but a deeper analysis is required that recognizes the roles of mathematics in framing manyaspects of contemporary society, that will connect mathematics education to the lived experiences of students, theircommunities, and society in general, and that acknowledges the global ethical responsibilities of mathematicians andmathematics educators. The book is organized in four sections (1) Mathematics education: For what and why?(2) Globalization and cultural...

Shenkut Habtamu Teachers. Perception, Knowledge And Use Modeling For Teaching

This work was intended to access teachers' perceptions and statistical knowledge for teaching statistics using modeling in secondary schools. The data were collected from secondary school mathematics teachers in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Questionnaire and interview were instruments employed for data collection. Thus the findings indicated that most respondents have positive perceptions for teaching statistics topics. Other main finding was teachers statistical knowledge, the results indicated that minority of teachers haven't necessary statistical knowledge for teaching statistical topics. Because in my country Ethiopia mathematics teachers' were trained to teach mathematics rather than statistics and they were took sometimes one introductory statistic course. But in secondary schools mathematics book, there are some statistical topics to be taught. It was also found that teachers didn't use modeling when they teach those topics because of different challenges like; teacher's knowledge, time, motivation, facilities, and students' background knowledge.

Create a more effective system for evaluating online faculty Evaluating Online Teaching is the first comprehensive book to outline strategies for effectively measuring the quality of online teaching, providing the tools and guidance that faculty members and administrators need. The authors address challenges that colleges and universities face in creating effective online teacher evaluations, including organizational structure, institutional governance, faculty and administrator attitudes, and possible budget constraints. Through the integration of case studies and theory, the text provides practical solutions geared to address challenges and foster effective, efficient evaluations of online teaching. Readers gain access to rubrics, forms, and worksheets that they can customize to fit the needs of their unique institutions. Evaluation methods designed for face-to-face classrooms, from student surveys to administrative observations, are often applied to the online teaching environment, leaving reviewers and instructors with an ill-fitted and incomplete analysis. Evaluating Online Teaching shows how strategies for evaluating online teaching differ from those used in traditional classrooms and vary as a function of the nature, purpose, and focus of the evaluation. This book guides faculty members and administrators in crafting an evaluation process specifically suited to online teaching and learning, for more accurate feedback and better results. Readers will: Learn how to evaluate online teaching performance Examine best practices for student ratings of online teaching Discover methods and tools for gathering informal feedback Understand the online teaching evaluation life cycle The book concludes with an examination of strategies for fostering change across campus, as well as structures for creating a climate of assessment that includes online teaching as a component. The experience and knowledge acquired in teacher education courses should build important fundamentalsfor the future teaching of mathematics. In particular, experience in mathematical problem solving, and inplanning lessons devoted to problem solving, is an essential component of teacher preparation. This bookdevelops a problem solving approach and is intended to be a text used in mathematics education courses (orprofessional development) for pre-service or in-service middle and secondary school teachers. It can be usedboth in graduate and undergraduate courses, in accordance with the focus of teacher preparation programs. The content of the book is suited especially for those students who are further along in their mathematicseducation preparation, as the text is more involved with mathematical ideas and problem solving, anddiscusses some of the intricate pedagogical considerations that arise in teaching. The text is written not as anintroduction to mathematics education (a first course), but rather as a second, or probably, third course. Thebook deals both with general methodology issues in mathematics education incorporating a problem solvingapproach (Chapters 1-6) and with more concrete applications within the context of specific topics - algebra, geometry, and discrete mathematics(Chapters 7-13).The book provides opportunities for teachers to engage in authentic mathematical thinking. The mathematical ideas under consideration build onspecific middle and secondary school ...

What could be more important to college and university faculty than teaching well? Indeed, in the past several years researchers have not only investigated key variables influencing teaching and learning, they also have applied empirical findings to develop and refine new systems of teaching and learning—approaches that provide the infrastructure for the day-to-day organization and assessment of student learning over the course of an academic term. This volume presents an overview of these systems and offers an assessment of the effectiveness of each relative to both student learning and enjoyment of the learning process. Written by leading teaching scholars, these systems include the lecture, problem-based learning, case studies, team-based learning, interteaching, service-learning, just-in-time teaching, Web-based computer-aided personalized instruction, and online teaching. Each contributor outlines the basic principles of a system, describes how to implement the system, and reviews the system’s overall effectiveness. This is the 128th volume of the Jossey-Bass higher education quarterly report New Directions for Teaching and Learning, which offers a comprehensive range of ideas and techniques for improving college teaching based on the experience of seasoned instructors and the latest findings of educational and psychological researchers.

Approaches to Studying the Enacted Mathematics Curriculum

Curriculum materials are among the most pervasive and powerful influences on schoolmathematics. In many mathematics classes, student assignments, the questions theteacher asks, the ways students are grouped, the forms of assessment, and much moreoriginate in curriculum materials. At the same time, teachers have considerable latitude inhow they use their curriculum materials. Two classes making use of the same materialsmay differ markedly in what mathematics content is emphasized and how students are engaged in learning that content. This volume considers a variety of research tools for investigating the enactment of mathematics curriculum materials, describing the conceptualization, development, and uses of seven sets of tools. Mathematics education researchers, curriculum developers, teacher educators, district supervisors, teacher leaders, and math coaches will find insights that canimprove their work, and guidance for selecting, adapting, and using tools for understanding the complex relationshipbetween curriculum materials and their enactment in classroom instruction.

Teachers Engaged in Research. Inquiry in Mathematics Classrooms, Grades 6-8 (PB)

Through the chapters in this volume we learn about the research foci and/ or questions that these classroom teachers are interested in examining, the mathematics content through which they engaged their students in these explorations, the data sources they used to make sense oftheir focus and questions, and their roles in the research. An overarching theme through all the chapters in this volume is the learning and professional development that occurs through teacherresearch. What these authors learned about student learning and their own teaching practice far exceeded the focus of their particularresearch questions. For some, the research validated their beliefs and instructional practices; for others, it deepened or extended their understandingof mathematics, or raised their expectations of students' capabilities. For all, it is fair to say, their research increased their awarenessof how students come to know and understand mathematics, and enabled them to gain insight into the complexity of teaching. Lampert(2001) noted, "One reason teaching is a complex practice is that many of the problems a teacher must address to get students to learn occursimultaneously, not one after another" (p. 2). We, as readers, gain a window into these teachers' research within and about the complexity ofclassroom teaching.

A Volume in The Montana Mathematics Enthusiast:Monograph Series in Mathematics EducationSeries Editor Bharath Sriraman, The University of MontanaPaul Ernest's name is synonymous with social constructivism as a philosophy ofmathematics. His contributions to mathematics education have occurred at a veryfundamental level and to an extent shaped theory development in this field. Hisresearch addresses fundamental questions about the nature of mathematics and how itrelates to teaching, learning and society. For the last three decades Paul has been aprolific scholar who has published in a wide array of topics such as the relationshipbetween the philosophy of mathematics and mathematics education, and moregenerally the philosophy of mathematics education, ethics and values in mathematics education, and the philosophy ofresearch methodology. The title of this Festschrift is meant to be a pun to convey the sometimes relativistic dimension to mathematical certaintythat Paul argued for in developing his philosophy, and also a play on words for the fact that absolute "earnestness" mayperhaps be a Platonic construct, and not possible in the realm of language and human discourse! Paul Ernest's scholarlyevolution and life can best be summarized in the words of Walt Whitman "Do I contradict myself? Very well then Icontradict myself" (I am large, I contain multitudes). This study investigated the effectiveness of technology innovation grants awarded to 55 secondary school mathematics teachers between 1997 and 2003. Although professional development resources often are allocated for integrating technology and for applying constructivist theory into the mathematics classroom, little is known about the return on these investments. The grant recipients were sorted into 3 groups, by the grant award date, and descriptive statistics was used to summarize the perceived impact of technology on constructivist statements. A 25-question mail-in survey instrument was used to gather information about teacher level of technology integration, teacher observations of students when using technology, the impact of technology on constructivist behaviors, and other demographic data related to years of teaching and courses taught. This study contributes to social change in professional development by providing a model to determine the efficacy of how funds allocated for instructional resources, instructional programming, the purchase and implementation of instructional technology and the allocation of resources to professional development programs.
