Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change. The increasing risks from climate change, sea level rise, and natural and man-made hazards-such as cyclones, storm surge, flooding, land erosion, water logging, and salinity intrusion in soil and water have already adversely affected livelihoods of people living in environmentally fragile areas. Considering the possible effects of climate change in the coastal area this study deals with the land ownership pattern and per capita consumption (which is a proxy for poverty).One of the significant results from this study shows positive relation between consumption expenditure (measurement of poverty) and land ownership. Hence, land ownership becomes a crucial factor for capacity of the households while facing challenges of both poverty and vulnerability.So these empirical study-findings conclude that possible effects of climate change worsen poverty in coastal Bangladesh.

Global teleconnections have significant effects on regional climate, economy and society around the world including India. The long-range forecasting of the seasonal rainfall anomalies associated with teleconnections is of paramount interest for monsoon prediction and other associated climatic risks. Scientific investigation entitled, "Regional monsoon dynamics and teleconnections" was carried out for the meteorological sub-division comprising of the provinces of Haryana, Delhi and Chandigarh. The annual mean rainfall ranged 402.3 mm at Sirsa and 1122.4 mm at Chandigarh. Contribution of monsoon season was maximum (77 to 82%) in annual rainfall. Strong relationship between teleconnections and all India monsoon rainfall was observed. But, this significant association was missing at different locations. The regression models developed for prediction of location specific monsoon rainfall overestimated the rainfall. The knowledge allows the linkage between the regional monsoon rainfall anomalies, normal rainfall cycle, and the circulation features associated with teleconnections for fine tuning the prediction system for sustainable agricultural development.

The broader objective of the study is to assess the climate induced vulnerabilities and to view their adaptive capacity with the climate change vulnerabilities. Both purposive and simple random samplings were used to conduct this study. Data were collected from 120 respondents through interview schedule technique. In the interview schedule technique, question was asked and filled by the interviewers in face-to-face situation. Climate induced changes such as extreme cyclone, devastating tidal surges, severe floods, tremendous river erosion, excessive rainfall, overwhelming salinity intrusion etc, are occurring more frequently in greater intensities and in an unpredictable manner around the world including Bangladesh. To perceive the vulnerability, the southwestern coastal Bangladesh is selected as a research area where high vulnerability to natural climate is due to its low lying delta. The research mainly focuses on the perception level of the people on climate change vulnerability and its impact on their livelihood patterns. Four research questions were developed in line with the purpose of the study, and four correspondent hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. Relevant literatures were reviewed to cover the variables under investigation. The population of the study was 100 registered farmers in the local government area. Purposive sampling technique was used to select the population from 11 political wards of Sardauna. Data for the study were obtained by the use of a questionnaire at 0.05 level of significance and 99 degree of freedom. From the analysis, it was found that flood, desertification, land degradation, cessation of rain and drought are the major indicators of climate change in Nigeria. Insufficient extension services, lack of farmers enlightenment, negligence of government, religious/traditional believes of farmers and low farmers income are found to be major reasons the farming communities are highly vulnerable to climate change. Based on the above findings, conclusion, recommendations and suggestions for further studies were made.

Diabetes mellitus is the most common metabolic disorder characterized by the presence of hyperglycemia due to defective insulin secretion, defective insulin action or both. Traditional Medicines derived from medicinal plants are used by about 60% of the world's population. We focus on herbal drugs and plants used in the treatment of diabetes. Diabetes is an important human ailment afflicting many from various walks of life in different countries. In Egypt it is proving to be a major health problem, especially in the urban areas. Though there are various approaches to reduce the ill effects of diabetes and its secondary complications, herbal formulations are preferred due to lesser side effects and low cost. A list of medicinal plants with proven antidiabetic and related beneficial effects and of herbal drugs used in treatment of diabetes is compiled. One of the etiologic factors implicated in the development of diabetes and its complications is the damage induced by free radicals and hence an antidiabetic compound with antioxidant properties would be more beneficial. Therefore information on antioxidant effects of these medicinal plants is also included.

Ethiopia's economy is primarily based on agriculture. However, this sector is increasingly being confronted with a rapidly growing population, and this has resulted in land use/cover changes. The changes in land use disturbs ecosystem balance and lead to a significant change in the physical, chemical, and biological soil health thereby yield declines. Half of the Ethiopian highland arable lands are moderately to severely degrade. Tigray, the Northern region of Ethiopia, suffers from extreme land degradation and soil health deterioration. Agulae catchment, the study area which is found in Eastern Tigray also has similar problems. Since previous studies on factors affecting soil health depletion has not been made at a catchment level, this study was conducted to fill the existing knowledge gap on the effects of and use change on soil health and its implication on soil management.

Research on these hydrological changes at basin scale is of great importance to the water managers for the future planning and management of water resources. The Thika River catchment is of great importance to Kenya and plays host to Ndakaini Dam which provides about 84% of Nairobi's water supply to a population of over 3 million residents, whose contribution to Kenya's Gross Product is 60%. Observed climatic variability and trends for Thika catchment were assessed for significance with Mann Kendall's trend test and discussed in light of future climate variability scenarios. The results indicate that the catchment has become relatively warmer over the last four decades. The annual precipitation and means of daily mean temperatures over the past 30 years has increased by about 7.8 mm (although not statistically significant), and 2.14°C respectively. Egypt is vulnerable to climate change, especially with regard to its water and land resources. Climate change will increase the evaporation losses from the High Aswan Dam Reservoir (HADR) and lead to loss of land at the northern coast due to sea level rise. In order to tackle this problem, this book assesses several adaptation tools that could be used to mitigate some of these impacts. For instance, Egypt could optimize ist water resources by decreasing evaporation losses from the HADR, or it could maximize land resources by identifying new settlement sites especially for climate migrants from the northern coastal zones. Databases on the characteristics of the HADR such as meteorological, hydrological, topographic and bed soil sedimentary data were compiled. Based on these databases, up-to-date mathematical models were developed to describe the hydrological characteristics of the HADR. Several options for reducing evaporation losses and new settlement areas were discovered and evaluated. Essential measures to preserve these areas were presented to promote sustainable development in this region.

Water and vegetation are vital for sustaining life. However, they are becoming more stressed following population growth and associated water demands. As a result, most continent discharges are classified as "moderate" to "highly threatened" by human activities, partly through water abstraction. Bwathonaro river in Meru, Imenti North District of Eastern Kenya is not exception. The river is experiencing over abstraction driven by a number of forces, including increased irrigation farming. Consequently, downstream flows have now reduced to zero during dry season, thus causing great effects to the riparian vegetation. The severity of the effects has necessitated the adoption of mitigation measures. This book describes measures taken to mitigate the effects of water abstraction on riparian vegetation of Bwathonaro river. With increase in management efforts, the results showed progressive amplification on timing and duration of river flow peaking and retrogressive behavior of riparian vegetation. The results are useful for planning and decision making on viable measures which can reduce the effects of water abstraction on the riparian vegetation of rivers with similar characteristics.
