Bladder cancer is a global health issue. In the endemic areas of Egypt, schistosomiasis is a leading cause of bladder cancer. Prognostic indicators are required to further identify which tumor should be treated aggressively early on, in order to improve surveillance. The Fas-Fas Ligand (Fas-FasL) system has been recognized as a major pathway for the induction of apoptosis in cells and tissues. Fas-mediated apoptosis is deeply involved in cancer cell death, brought about by the immune system. The interaction of Fas and Fas Ligand contributes to cytotoxic T-lymphocyte and natural killer-cell mediated cytotoxicity against cancer cells. This study was performed to assess the importance of the apoptosis markers (Fas and FasL) in bilharzial versus non-bilharzial bladder cancer, in order to detect the possible diagnostic &/or prognostic potentials of this factor.

This work was designed to investigate the anticancer property of E. camaldulensis in animal model. Compounds and extracts from this plant exhibited strong inhibition of cancer cells growth with minimal host toxicity. Apoptosis of cancer cells was triggered with the treatment of this plant ingredient. Development of drugs exploiting Eucalyptus may unveil a new hope for cancer treatment in future.

Apoptosis has been recognized as a key mechanism of tumor cell elimination and in cancer, it has been recently assumed even with more importance with the realization that it may be the possible the principle mechanism by which irradiation and chemotherapy kill cancer cells. This study was to explore the role of apoptosis in dysplasia and squamous cell carcinoma of oral mucosa by detecting apoptotic influencing protein, procaspase-3 and cell death pathway genes, Fas and Fas ligand and antiapoptotic transcriptional factor, NFkB with c-myc oncogen.Forty-two selected cases were included in this retrospective study, twelve cases of oral dysplasia and thirty cases of oral squamus cell carcinoma. The expression of procaspase-3 protein was detected by immunohistochemistry and Fas, Fas ligand, NFkB and c-myc genes were detected by In situ hybridization.This study concluded that failure of apoptosis together with activation of c-myc oncogen and antiapoptotic factor (NFkB) might play an important role in malignant transformation and promote oral tumorigenesis.

Colon cancer is the third most common form of cancer and the second leading cause of death among cancer patients. Therapeutic agents that can down regulate the expression of the enzyme matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in colorectal tumors may prove effective in the treatment of colorectal tumor, given the fact that this is highly metastatic in nature. Nitric oxide (NO), a free radical, plays major role in many signaling pathways takes the lead role in colon cancer progression. Emodin, a naturally occurring anthraquinone suppresses the NO mediated up regulation of matrix metalloproteinases. The study reveals that emodin can be targeted as an effective anti metastatic agent in NO induced tumor progression. The methodology involved detecting the non cytotoxic concentration of exogenous nitric oxide releaser (SNP) and emodin in WiDr cell line. Molecular level analysis of matrix metalloproteinase mRNA levels in SNP and emodin treated cells shows a clear correlation of the involvement of these enzymes in WiDr cell migration and the inhibitory action of emodin on cell migration.
