Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: MSc in Finance and Investment, Mekelle University (Business and economic college), language: English, abstract: This study was conducted in Ethiopian insurance companies in order to measure the technical efficiency using DEA input oriented approach under both constant and variable return versions and Malmquist index output oriented approach in the period 2006-2010. In the first stage, the relative technical efficiency is estimated with data envelopment analysis (DEA) to establish benchmarking company, then, they are ranked according to their technical efficiency. Mann whiney- U test in the second stage was used to determine the factors affecting efficiency. The concept of efficiency concerns is an insurer's ability to produce a given set of outputs (such as premiums and investment income) via the use of inputs such as administrative and general expenses and financial capital. The insurance company is said to be technically efficient if it cannot reduce its input usage without some corresponding reduction in outputs, given the current state of production technology in the industry. The technical efficiency of Ethiopian insurance companies during the study period was 86.7%, 97.1% and 84.9% in technical efficiency, pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency, respectively. The productivity change shows Ethiopian insurance companies were quite well in efficiency change rathe...

Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Economics - Job market economics, grade: 1.0, , course: Development Economics, language: English, abstract: The study measures the level of technical efficiency and its determinants in Ethiopian garment factories. The study employs both Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) to compute the technical efficiency of Ethiopian garment factories and Tobit model to examine the determinant of technical inefficiency of the garment factories based on a data set of ninety four garment factories over the period of 2014-2015. The study used Akaike Information Criteria (AIC) to opt for the best function between Cobb-Douglas and Translog functions. The result reveals that Cobb-Douglas production functions better explains the production behavior of garment factories. The DEA estimation shows that the mean technical efficiency of garment factories was around to be 0.43 while such figure in SFA goes as high as 0.89 and the research indicated that export do not promote technical efficiency Ethiopian garment factories. The research indicated that DEA is more appropriate for small garment factors while SFA is more suitable to large and medium garment factories. The result from DEA model indicates that educational level of production manager, local fabric sourcing, collaboration with similar factories and membership status with Ethiopian textile and garment institute have positive contribution to efficiency. Now-a-days the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in agriculture has reached its peak. This harms the human health as well as environment. The process of agricultural modernization has been an important contributing factor towards this. This deprives the land from its fertility and leaves it unfit for further agricultural operations. Hence, a better alternative of such chemical monsters is required to overcome these ill-effects. Therefore, a shift from chemical to organic farming is appreciated. Production efficiency, economic efficiency and employment generation efficiency of any system is a direct measure of its preferability. Therefore, this study deals with the requirements, methods, advantages, etc. of vermicomposting as well as its applications in agriculture. The main purpose of this process is the quick and efficient conversion of the organic waste materials into the nutritious fertilizer for plants.

Economists have come to believe that using resources efficiently can lead to differences in the growth rates of economies. Efficient use of resources is known to improve the standard of living of the people thereby increasing their welfare. However, initially 'capital' and later on 'labour' attracted the attention of the economists. The need for the efficient use of resources was only recognized as an important determinant in the growth of economies in the fifties. Economists believe that the developing countries in particular need to concentrate on improving the efficiency of their use of resources, since these economies have an increasing number of people to feed and proportionally little resources at their disposal. Whenever there is talk of efficiency regarding the use of resources it means that all the resources that are used in the process of production should be used efficiently. These resources are: capital, labour, raw materials, power, fuel and the skills of the entrepreneur. Efficiency is reflected in the unit or average cost of production and in the quality of goods. Before the introduction of the reforms, the Indian industrial sector was characterized by numerous controls, which restricted internal as well as external competition. However, after the reforms such controls were loosened and it is now simply expected that the Indian industrial sector uses its resources efficiently. The present study examines whether there have been significant reductio...

The information was generated through household survey, key informant interview, focus group discussion, field observation. The findings revealed that hill farming system is characterized by growing food deficiency, indigenous technology and practices, and limited extension services. In given condition, women work more hours than men. Men have relatively more access to as well as control over resources (agricultural inputs. Both men and women have equal access to and control over the benefit obtained from states resources and services, but women lack control over the cash earning. Men and women make most decisions jointly. But men make most of the decisions for economic activities. With the increase in male out-migration, the workload for women and children has increased. In overall, globalization process does not seem to contribute towards the improvement of agricultural activities, nor towards poverty reduction.

The objective of the study is to measure the technical efficiency of small holder farmers in sesame production. The study was conducted using a cross sectional data collected in 2015/2016-production year from a total sample of 110 households. Cobb-Douglas function was employed to estimate technical efficiency of smallholder farmers in sesame production. The finding of the study indicated that there is inefficiency in the production of sesame in the study area. The estimation of the frontier model with inefficiency variables shows that the mean technical efficiency of farmers is 0.69 (69%). This implies that production of sesame can be increased by 31 percent given the existing technological level. This indicates that the farmers did not using production inputs efficiently in such a way that they give their maximum potential. The estimated stochastic production frontier model together with the inefficiency parameters suggests that any attempt to strengthen technical efficiency of smallholder farmers in the study area must give due attention to the improvement of the principal causes for efficiency differentials such as education, age, ...

Successive Association Agreements between the EU and its Mediterranean Partner Countries (MPCs) aimed mostly at fostering trade liberalization. The analysis of agricultural trade flows between both areas has been traditionally approached according to geographical proximity and political relations via quantitative trade models. Available evidence reveals serious difficulties to conduct thorough analysis with the mentioned models. An alternative analytical avenue would be the use of qualitative approaches linked to Global Value Chain analysis. This book focuses on analyzing the buyer side of the value chains for the main agricultural products sourced from MPCs to the EU, taking Spain as a representative case. The analysis provides primary information for better profiling the opportunities and constraints of these flows, and deriving implications to improve the efficiency of the target value chains. No previous references about the topic investigated were found in the specialized literature, which makes this research probably the first attempt to analyze Euro-Mediterranean agricultural trade dynamics using the value chain approach from the buyer market perspective.

The approaches used are the data envelopment analysis (DEA) and DEA-based Malmquist productivity index. In addition, a second-stage tobit regression is estimated to determine the possible causes of inefficiency. Mean scores in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination are used as output while gross enrolments, pupil-classes ratio and pupil-teacher ratio are used as inputs. In the second stage, a dummy variable to capture the location of the district is included in the model. The analysis of Tobit regression shows a negative significant relationship between Pupil Teacher Ratio is and efficiency thus high pupil teacher ratio is associated with inefficiency. Districts located in urban areas are found to perform better than their rural counterparts.

Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Medicine - Hospital Environment, Clinical Medicine, grade: 80, University of Hertfordshire, language: English, abstract: This report analyses the efficiency of hospitals in England and Germany. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is utilised to estimate a best practice frontier and to evaluate the performance characteristics of different hospitals in the two countries. The measurement categories of input factors are represented by the hospital size (amount of beds), number of wards, number of employed medical specialists, sum of total inpatient admissions, demographic environment (population density in population/km²), and one output factor (mortality rates).Regarding these factors, the main findings reveal that the allocation of inefficient hospitals in England is broadly spread and, therefore, the mean efficiency value of hospitals in England is ≈44% (whereas 100% describes efficient units). In contrast, the mean efficiency value of German hospitals equates to ≈91%. Consequently, the allocation of inefficient German hospitals is less spread and the overall performance of hospital health supply is more efficient in Germany compared to England. Most remarkably, the amount of inpatient admissions is one of the main drivers for efficiency and especially the English hospitals suffer from high numbers of inpatient admissions, which may be reduced due to improvements in the primary healthcare supply provided by general practitioners...

Most of its successes are found in New Jersey, then known as the Garden State. Led by the international Jewish community, Russian Jews poured out of Russia. The Jewish Colonization Association, established by German Baron Maurice de Hirsch, initially paved the way for numerous Jewish agricultural to locate in New Jersey where marketing transportation and proximity to markets existed. This account explores the scores of settlements in New Jersey, from the sandy soils of South Jersey, top the poultry farming in Central Jersey to the cattle farming in Flemington's Western Jersey. Drawing on rare sources, this tale delves into the transformation of urban European Jews with little agricultural experience to farmers toiling American soil. Contract farming offers the advantage of reduced capital investment, reduced risk of price fluctuation, guaranteed returns and provision of technical assistance to the farmers. The study was purposively conducted in Burdwan district of West Bengal, India, as the state is the second highest producer of potato in the country. Contract farming helped the farmers to diversify their farm, increased the employment opportunity and area under potato. It also helped the farmers to get more net benefit from potato. After engaging in contract farming the farmers used various inputs for potato cultivation more judiciously but not in higher quantity than the non contract farmers. There was not any major environmental disadvantage of potato contract farming except the emergence of new pest and diseases of potato. The knowledge level of the contract farmers about potato production technology and the disease management practices of potato were significantly higher than the non contract farmers..........

We in North America are wont to think that we may instruct all the world in agriculture, because our agricultural wealth is great and our exports to less favored peoples have been heavy; but this wealth is great because our soil is fertile and new, and in large acreage for every person. We have really only begun to farm well. The first condition of farming is to maintain fertility. This condition the oriental peoples have met, and they have solved it in their way.We may never adopt particular methods, but we can profit vastly by their experience. With the increase of personal wants in recent time, the newer countries may never reach such density of population as have Japan and China; but we must nevertheless learn the first lesson in the conservation of natural resources, which are the resources of the land.[From the Forward]Get Your Copy Today!

Since 1990s to date, there has been a growing global interest among researchers in impact assessment of research and development (R&D). Attention has specifically been placed on the impact of R&D interventions on target beneficiaries. In this regard, this work, besides reviewing studies on impact assessment of agricultural research in Tanzania it documents the experience of Tanzanian farmers in the use of innovations by focusing on rice research-based innovations. Adaptation rather than adoption of innovations is evident in smallholder rice farming. Moreover, it sheds light on the limitation of the production-based reductionist approach in assessing the impact of research on food security. The economic costs and benefits of rice research in rain-fed agriculture in Tanzania are also presented. In general, this book should be of great interest to students in agricultural extension, rural sociology, agricultural economics, development studies as well as managers of agricultural research.

Ethiopia is endowed with abundant natural resources and biodiversity. Yet the sustainability of these resources is under threat. The initial alarming projections of environmental scarcity, inadequate supplies of minerals to sustain industrialization and agricultural production are too limited to meet the needs of a growing population.Environmental services are inadequate to disperse increasing quantities of waste and have given way over time to a broader view of growing insecurity. Resource scarcity poses new challenges, it also encourages the development of technologies that allow for the discovery of new reserves and provide unexpected tools and capacities to cope with these challenges. The main development agenda of Ethiopian government is poverty eradication. There is a wide national consensus on the poverty agenda of erradicating poverty and the policies and strategies pursued to address such a development priority. This book desscribes in detail the resources what we have, area of scarcity and the government attentions to cope with the resource scarcity.

Land degradation is rising in Northern Ghana and the national government and various NGOs are seeking to address and to prevent the derivative consequences of this development. Unsustainable farming practice contributes to land degradation, and agricultural extension service is a shared means of intervention for the promotion of sustainable farming. By taking a deeper look at the state-NGO-society dynamics, the work provides an analysis of the consequences of actors' different understandings and approaches to unsustainable land management. The analysis is focused around the interplay between historical political discourses, national policies and specific NGO interventions with relation to extension services. The analysis casts light on power relations and their influence on land management in Northern Ghana. Despite the fact that the government and the NGO used as a case are placed within different discourses regarding views on small-scale farmers' capabilities, there are indications that the gap between the two actors is closing. An increasing emphasis on decentralisation and participation is creating new opportunities and room for manoeuvre for more actors.

Crop protection continues to be an important component of modern farming to maintain food production to feed an expanding human population, but considerable changes have occurred in the regulation of pesticides in Europe in the last decade. The aim has been to reduce their impact on people and the environment. This has resulted in a major reduction in the number of chemicals approved for application on crops. In other parts of the world, a continuing expansion in the growing of genetically modified crops has also changed the pattern of pesticide use. In this second edition, Graham Matthews, updates how pesticides are registered and applied and the techniques used to mitigate their effects in the environment. Information on operator safety, protection of workers in crops treated with pesticides and spray drift affecting those who live in farming areas is also discussed. By bringing together the most recent research on pesticides in a single volume, this book provides a vital up to date resource for agricultural scientists, agronomists, plant scientists, plant pathologists, entomologists, environmental scientists, public health personnel, toxicologists and others working in the agrochemical industry and governments. It should assist development of improvements in harmonising regulation of pesticides in countries with limited resources for registration of pesticides.

White leg shrimp was first cultured in South America. Due to uncontrolled farming activities in those countries the entire industry was devastated. The industry has not recovered fully from the earlier onslaught in most South American countries, such as Ecuador. This book , therefore provides an important rationale for cooperation between several interested parties in utilizing the high production capacities of white leg shrimp. The rationale is that an increase in the cooperation level leads to an increase, not only in the stocking densities, but also in several other related factors of white leg shrimp production. Some measures are also proposed to improve the aquaculture area. An empirical investigation of the efficiency of a white leg shrimp farmer was demonstrated. It is based on a research study conducted in Vietnam ,convinced that cost and production studies and proposed some aquaculture strategies for Vietnam. This book will be especially useful for good farming policy development in Vietnam and other farming interested countries.

Facsimile of 1940 Edition. An Agricultural Testament is Sir Albert Howard's best-known publication and remains one of the seminal works in the history of organic farming movement. The work focuses on the nature and management of soil fertility, and notably explores composting. At a time when modern, chemical-based industrialized agriculture was just beginning to radically alter food production, it advocated natural processes rather than man-made inputs as the superior approach to farming. It was first published in England in 1940. Since this book first appeared in 1940, it has been regarded as one of the most important contributions to the solution of soil rehabilitation problems ever published. More importantly, it is regarded as the keystone of the organic movement.Louis Bromfield called it "the best book I know on soil and the processes which take part in it." Soil Science called it "the most interesting and suggestive book on soil fertility which has appeared since King's Farmers of Forty Centuries." And Mother Earth News recently called it "the most basic of all introductions to organic farming by the founder of the modern movement."The object of the book was to draw attention to the loss of soil fertility, brought about by the vast increase in crop and animal production, that has led to such disastrous consequences as a general unbalancing of farming practices, an increase in plant and animal diseases and the loss of soil by erosion. Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2013 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: 4.0, Atlantic International University (BUSINESS STUDIES AND ECONOMICS), course: Development Studies, language: English, abstract: Improved agricultural systems need management skills such as planning and coordination of activities. Undesirable practices such as unbalanced utilization of resources, poor timing of activities lead to poor performance in the agricultural sector. Dynamic scheduling of activities, proper factor combinations, have limited production processes and production potential. Unpredictability changes within the changing environment as witnessed by hazards, weather, resource failure among other factors necessitates the dynamic scheduling systems to allow high conditions of production performance. Lack of efficient processes in regard to resources and activities that are coherent within the prevailing circumstances has always led to supply shock which ultimately affects other areas such as the industrial sector. Viability of agricultural production requires appropriate management strategies and adopting appropriate practices so as to maintain and increase the profitability of production ventures in a sustainable manner.

Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: 1.0, Humboldt-University of Berlin (Ressourcenökonomie), language: English, abstract: About two-thirds of the Sierra Leonean population depends on agricultural activities for their livelihood. Agriculture in Sierra Leone is diverse but the highest potential for increasing rural income is attached to cocoa production. Cocoa producers in the Eastern region have an option to sell their cocoa to cooperatives, companies, petty traders, resident and Lebanese buyers. Producer marketing decision is key to breaking a vicious circle of low quality, prices and incentives that hinder overall development in the sector and poverty alleviation. The purpose of this study was therefore to better understand marketing behaviour of cocoa producers in Sierra Leone with the help of New Institutional Economics. In this study, the concept of Power Resources was employed and complemented by a Value Chain Analysis to study factors which influence cocoa marketing decisions. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods were applied. First, qualitative research activities included 20 Focus Group Discussions with farmers in selected communities in the Eastern province. The research team then returned to respective communities to conduct questionnaires with 100 farmers. Considering the twelve Power Resources investigated in greater detail showed that those related to transaction costs, risks, exit possibilities, sanction p...

The novel was written in 1991 and was rewarded a Pulitzer Prize. Jane Smiley rewrote the Shakespearean play King Lear by narrating the story from the eldest daughter's point of view. However, A Thousand Acres is not only a rewriting of Shakespeare's work, it also comments on the social and agricultural circumstances in the United States of the 1960s and 70s, where the novel is set. Her critique in this novel points towards industrialised farming and the exploitation of land and its resources. The aim of the paper ist to find out how agriculture and farming are represented in "A Thousand Acres". How does Jane Smiley describe the results of industrialised farming? Is there any return? How do people cope with agribusiness and its consequences? What is the structure of the society that lives for agribusiness? In the course of answering these questions I will try to draw relating problems between Smiley's "A Thousand Acres" and Shakespeare's "King Lear" and will try to point out the differences between the novel and the play in matters pertaining to concepts of land-ownership.

Feed Efficiency in the Beef Industry provides a thorough and concise overview of feed efficiency in beef cattle. It frames the great importance of feed efficiency to the industry and details the latest findings of the many scientific disciplines that intersect and aim to improve efficient and sustainable production of nutritious beef. The vast majority of production costs are directly tied to feed. With increased demand for grains to feed a rapidly increasing world population and to supply a new demand for alternative fuels, feed costs continue to increase. In recent years, the negative environmental impacts of inefficient feeding have also been realized; as such feed efficiency is an important factor in both economic viability and environmental sustainability of cattle production. Feed Efficiency in the Beef Industry covers a broad range of topics ranging from economic evaluation of feed efficiency to the physiological and genetic bases of efficient conversion of feed to high quality beef. Chapters also look at how a fuller understanding of feed efficiency is leading to new selective breeding efforts to develop more efficient cattle. With wide-ranging coverage from leading international researchers, Feed Efficiency will be a valuable resource for producers who wish to understand the complexities, challenges, and opportunities to reduce their cost of production, for students studying the topic and for researchers and professionals working in the beef industry.

Wastes, whether they are solid wastes or wastewater, are resources from which economic values may be derived. Almost all components of agricultural and food wastewater can be and should be utilized or recovered; the stumbling block of achieving this aspiration is economical, not technical. The last one and a half decades have seen the surging of agricultural and non-agricultural commodity prices across the board and increased public consciousness of environmental impact of industrial wastewater discharge and treatment. The confluence of these new developments have generated new interests and applications of agricultural and food wastewater and their treatment residuals in diverse fields and industries. This new edition will expand topics related to wastewater utilizations and new uses of treatment residuals while providing up-to-date information on new treatment technologies and practices across the globe. The new edition’s target audience is anyone who has the responsibility of dealing with its plant effluents in agricultural and food processing operations. It should be of value to waste management personnel responsible for managing major waste effluents from agro and food industries. It will also be useful for college students whose majors are in environmental science or waste management fields as a reference.

Russian oligarchs appeared after the fall of the Soviet Union and are represented by wealthy businessmen who control a huge part of natural resources enterprises and have a big political influence. Oligarchs' shares in some natural resources industries reach even 70-80%. Their role in Russian economy is big without any doubts, however there has been very little economic analysis done. The aim of this work is to examine Russian oligarchy on micro and macro levels, its role in Russia's transition and the possible positive and negative outcomes from this phenomenon. For this purpose the work presents two theoretical models and on the basis of the results suggests how government could make the phenomenon of oligarchy to be more beneficial for Russian economy.

In terms of efficiency and productivity growth, what's the performance of an economy? What is the comparative advantage of an economy compared with the rest of the world? How do policies and measures affect the whole economic system when environmental constrains are taken into account? Of course, many other interesting questions can be posed. The first three chapters in this book introduce three important practices of input-output analysis in China in the fields of water shadow price evaluating and predicting, building energy efficiency impacts evaluating, unfair importation impacts calculating. The last chapter is the advanced research in nonlinear input-output model. The methods and results are quite general, and this feature facilitates the use of the book as a reference source, particularly by applied economists and macro economic managers.

This revised edition is a comprehensive, authoritative set of essays. It is more detailed and analytical than the mainstream treatments of HRM. As in previous editions, Managing Human Resources analyses HRM, the study of work and employment, using an integrated multi-disciplinary approach. The starting point is a recognition that HRM practice and firm performance are influenced by a variety of institutional arrangements that extend beyond the firm. The consequences of HRM need to incorporate analysis of employees and other stakeholders as well as the implications for organizational performance.
