This work focuses on developing an efficient web-based students’ records management system which can ensure quick and accurate information retrieval for the consumption of both students and staff in the academic community. Existing systems were reviewed, a design was proposed for the new system and implementation was carried out. The system has a backend system that is based on Microsoft SQL Server and a frontend which employs html compatible tools. A case study of the Redeemer’s University Students’ Information System was undertaken.

The operating point of the PV system depends upon the temperature, irradiation, wind speed, humidity and other environmental factors. To operate the photovoltaic system in a power efficient way, the designer should be well acquainted with the knowledge of photovoltaic behavior in terms of voltage, current and power. The task of an efficient PV system is to track the maximum operating point correctly so that optimum power can be received from the sun. Although the efficiency of the solar photo voltaic system is improving day by day but still optimum power has not been harnessed due to changes in temperature, irradiance and other factors that vary with places. The study has investigated the change in volume of water pumped by using maximum power point tracking mechanism and its benefits to the end user. The work is based on the maximum power transfer theory. The DC-DC converter will match the impedance of the photovoltaic module with the load by generating appropriate duty cycle that will be used to turn ON or OFF the electronic switch of the converter. Hence, this study is intended to design and simulate an efficient MPPT based PV tracking system for pumping application.

Testing and comparing antivirus software necessitates the availability of malware samples. An efficient way to detect malware is the use of honeypots. There exist honeypots which passively wait for automated attacks in order to capture the malicious binaries. Other types of honeypots crawl the web, and, by being attacked, can identify malicious websites. The goal was to create an efficient, easily manageable and adaptable network of honeypots, distributed worldwide, which automatically collects and handles malware from the web. For this purpose, existing honeypots were investigated and compared extensively. The findings were incorporated in the design of specialized, user-friendly honeynets, capable of automatically collecting malware samples and handling already known and unknown (zero-day) attacks. Additionally, an efficient sorting mechanism for large amounts of malware files was developed in order to create useful test sets.

Magnetic levitation technology has evolved as an important consideration in designing and developing systems with frictionless guidance and suspension. The main objective undertaken in this thesis is to create a model and develop a magnetic levitation system capable of levitating and moving a ferromagnetic object by means of a real-time controlled magnetic field generated by a set of electromagnets. An analytical mathematical model describing the electromechanical dynamics of the system is obtained and identified. In addition, a simplified and more efficient mathematical model based on experimental data is investigated. Three different vertical direction controllers based on different nonlinear control theories: Jacobian Linearization, Feedback Linearization and Sliding Mode Control, are proposed and validated. The mechanical components of a three-dimensional magnetic levitation system with simple position control scheme are designed and analyzed. A concept of digital control system consist of microcontroller based digital controller, position sensor system and digitally controlled power drivers is developed and implemented to track a reference position signal. Finally, the procedure of integrating the designed system into a suggested avionics system concept to estimate the performance of the avionics system's fault-tolerance capability is discussed as a basis for future work.

In the era of High Performance Energy Efficient Computing (HPEEC), the focus of research is again shifting for Eco-friendly design. Eco-Friendly design is a environment friendly design which has achieved energy efficiency in signicant amount. In this work, we applied 3 clock gating techniques (Latch Free, Latch Based, Flip-Flop Based) on 3 ALU(Synchronous, Asynchronous and Global Reset) to find the most energy efficient techniques out of 6 combination under consideration. Then, we try to get the benefit of 28nm technology in term of energy efficiency, which delivers twice the gate density of the 40nm process and also features a BRAM cell size shrink of 50 percent. Finally, we search for the most energy efficient IO Standard for latch free clock gated global reset ALU to design the most energy efficient ALU possible.

E-voting systems are composed of machines located in polling stations. The research has shown that these systems are vulnerable to hacking attacks that endanger anonymity of voters and correctness of results. State of the art web technologies and advanced cryptographic techniques have been utilized to provide integrity of ballots and voter secrecy in the insecure Internet environment. For this work, an attack is designed and implemented by exploiting both software and web browser vulnerabilities on client's machine. While certain practical topics-such as interoperability, etc.-have at least partially been addressed, scalability and expressivity issues regarding the utilisation of multimedia metadata on the Semantic Web are still widely neglected. However, existing Web (2.0) applications handling millions of multimedia assets are starting to take advantage of Semantic Web technologies. This work contributes to design decisions regarding scalable and smart multimedia applications on the Semantic Web. Based on an analysis of practical issues-stemming from diverse projects and activities the author has participated in over the past four years-three areas have been identified, namely (i) performance and scalability issues on the data access level, (ii) the effective and efficient representation of multimedia content descriptions, and (iii) the deployment of multimedia metadata on the Semantic Web. The three research areas have as its common base the trade-off between expressivity and scalability. We present our findings regarding scalable, yet expressive Semantic Web multimedia applications in a number of practical settings and discuss future directions, such as interlinking multimedia.

A similar evolution is observed in the system-on-chip (SoC) market through the emergence of multi-processor SoC (MPSoC) designs. Nevertheless, MPSoCs introduce some challenges to the system architects concerning the efficient design of memory hierarchies and system interconnects while maintaining the low power and cost constraints. In this master thesis, I try to address some of these challenges: namely, non-cache coherent DMA transfers in MPSoCs, low instruction cache utilization by OS codes, and factors governing the system throughput in MPSoC designs. These issues are investigated using the empirical and simulation approaches. Empirical studies are conducted on the Danube platform. For the success of mobile agent applications, secure, portable, and efficient execution platforms for mobile agents are crucial. However, available mobile agent systems do not meet the high security requirements of commercial applications, are not portable, or cause high overhead. Currently, the majority of mobile agent platforms is based on Java. These systems simply rely on the security facilities of Java, although the Java security model is not suited to protect agents and service components from each other. Above all, Java is lacking a concept of strong protection domains that could be used to isolate agents. The J-SEAL2 mobile agent system extends the Java environment with a model of strong protection domains. The core of the system is a micro-kernel fulfilling the same functions as a traditional operating system kernel: Protection, communication, domain termination, and resource control. For portability reasons, J-SEAL2 is implemented in pure Java. J-SEAL2 provides an efficient communication model and offers good scalability and performance for large-scale applications. This book evaluates the management of geospatial information in Web-based Open Source Content Management Systems (CMSs). Geospatial data can be managed by the CMS in several of the technology layers, on the database level, on the file system level as well as on the programming level. The following questions were addressed: How should geo data be structured by (web-based) CMSs so that the system, and the administrator, can efficiently and flexibly manage the geospatial data and display it in context? We created prototypes of the CMSs and installed and evaluated several plugins (WordPress) and modules (Drupal) as well as conducted research on the technology stacks. As is shown, the tested CMSs do not take advantage of the geospatial data type available in relational database systems like MySQL and PostGIS. Timing tests were developed to evaluate whether the CMSs should take advantage of the geospatial columns.
