The study finds the patterns of bilingual children’s code-switching during conversation who acquired Bangla as their first language and English as a second language. The study takes a closer look at bilingual children’s speech performances from two-word to telegraphic stage and finds if the code-switching patterns occur in an order during their speech development. It also presents the percentage of the frequency level of the occurred code-switching patterns, the fundamental triggers for code-switching, and the reasons behind the children’s and parents code-switching. Code-switching is the central issue of bilingual research (Milroy, 1995, p. 7) and the study findings contribute more information on code-switching and early bilingualism.

There is a growing need for knowledge and practical ideas about the preparation of teachers forEnglish language learners (ELLs), a growing segment of the K-12 population in the UnitedStates. This book is for teachers, administrators, and teacher educators looking for innovativeways to prepare teachers for ELLs and will position teachers to empower these students. Thisvolume will appeal mostly to those preparing teachers in contexts that have not have historicallyhad large numbers of ELLs, but have had a high rate of recent growth (e.g., Midwestern U.S.).This work is the combination of teacher preparation and ELL issues. This volume is unique intackling pre-service and inservice teacher preparation. Additionally, the chapters collectively aim to go beyond merely equippingteachers to meet the needs of ELLs, but to reach a level of effectiveness with the outcome of equity. The book highlights the knowledge, skills, and beliefs of teachers about ELLs. The professional development programme (PDP) drew for its design on programmes recommended for their success in other contexts, but was unique for its innovatory combination of specific forms of content (‘task-based learning’) and process (a ‘coaching approach’), and for its adaptation to the needs of EFL primary school teachers in Thailand. Task-based learning (TBL) was recommended in the literature for its success in helping teachers to focus on student learning, and providing explicit practices to implement the principles of communicative language teaching (CLT) as required by the new curriculum. A coaching approach was claimed to assist teachers by clearly explaining theoretical concepts and their practical implementation at the classroom level, simplifying the steps for implementation in the classroom context and supporting teachers through the process of change.

AUTHORS: Vershawn Ashanti Young, Rusty Barrett, Y’Shanda Young-Rivera, and Kim Brian Lovejoy. SERIES: Working and Writing for Change edited by Steve Parks. With a new Foreword by April Baker-Bell and a new Preface by Vershawn Ashanti Young and Y’Shanda Young-Rivera, Other People’s English: Code-Meshing, Code-Switching, and African American Literacy presents an empirically grounded argument for a new approach to teaching writing to diverse students in the English language arts classroom. Responding to advocates of the “code-switching” approach, four uniquely qualified authors make the case for “code-meshing”—allowing students to use standard English, African American English, and other Englishes in formal academic writing and classroom discussions. This practical resource translates theory into a concrete road map for pre- and inservice teachers who wish to use code-meshing in the classroom to extend students’ abilities as writers and thinkers and to foster inclusiveness and creativity. The text provides activities and examples from middle and high school as well as college and addresses the question of how to advocate for code-meshing with skeptical administrators, parents, and students. Other People’s English provides a rationale for the social and educational value of code-meshing, including answers to frequently asked questions about language variation. It also includes teaching tips and action plans for professional development workshops that address cultural prejudices.

Helping EFL learners write accurately and finding appropriate ways of dealing with learner errors have always been the concern of many teachers. Errors are important clues for teachers to decide on which mode of corrective feedback to provide. This book focuses on the study of the effects of corrective feedback modes (direct, coded, and uncoded) on EFL learners’ grammatical and lexical writing accuracy. It also investigates the learners’ perceptions as to the way corrective feedback modes may influence writing accuracy. It offers an extensive theoretical review as well as detailed empirical analyses in textual, tabular and graphical forms, followed by the discussion of the results and the implications they could have for teachers, learners, and syllabus designers.

Over the last decades, studies on focus on form instruction have concentrated on the role that corrective feedback plays in foreign language classrooms. However, the type of feedback whether explicit or implicit has been a point of contention in EFL contexts in recent years. In other words, this area is very little researched and there is a need to empirically investigate explicit/implicit corrective feedback. The present book explores the relative effectiveness of corrective feedback types, namely, recast and metalinguistic, on the development of EFL learners’ interlanguage system. Moreover, this book investigates the extent to which type of error treatment helps the learners’ development of grammatical accuracy in EFL contexts. Reading this book will be very useful to EFL teachers to see how focus on form can be integrated in communicative language teaching.

Is there change or continuity in religious affiliation? While much of the literature on Zimbabweans is largely focused on their reasons for migration, the policies, laws and difficulties they encounter in South Africa; this study examines how Zimbabwean migrants use religion in the host country. This study investigates if and how migration affects Zimbabwean migrants‟ religious beliefs and practices. This study explores also how Zionist churches respond to the existential needs of migrants and their worldviews; specifically looking at the responses offered to metaphysical challenges like umnyama (misfortune) of Zimbabwean migrants in Johannesburg.

This book generally raises the issue of the lack of pedagogical training in Moroccan universities. On a more specific level, the study is an attempt to investigate the perceptions of the need for pedagogical training among EFL university teachers. One of the motives behind choosing this topic is the fact that training is not a requirement for recruitment in Moroccan universities. The second motive is the teachers' misconceptions of what makes a good teacher, and how they affect their teaching practices. Through the investigation, the study aims to find out how the teaches' perceptions of the need for training are influenced by their conceptions of teaching and learning, their perceptions of what teaching is, and the way they approach and deal with uncertainties in their teaching. The second purpose of the study is to argue for the need of a pedagogical training that can change the teachers' misconceptions, and that can promote effective EFL teaching practices.

In EFL contexts, the reading instruction practices do not do much to enhance students' reading comprehension especially at higher levels. The instructional practices prevailing therein emphasize surface-level information processing techniques such as memorization and rehearsal at the expense of deeper processing such as elaboration and critical thinking. Given the importance of reading comprehension abilities and critical thinking skills, it seems to be imperative to raise EFL instructors' awareness concerning the possible relationship between critical thinking and EFL reading comprehension performance. This book provides an investigation of students' critical thinking ability and how they are related to the students' gender and reading scores. From the perspective of professional practice, this study has the potential to make a significant contribution to the field in that it has provided further insights into the relationship between EFL reading comprehension performance and critical thinking. Moreover, EFL instructors can be made conscious of the importance of critical thinking and they could therefore apply its strategies at the EFL reading courses.

The educational reform movement in Taiwan encourages learning English for communicative purposes and values individual interests. However, many current in-service English teachers and parents learned English via grammar translation method and testing, which focuses on the correction of language forms. As a result, these English teachers and parents may or may not share similar views about the changing trends in English learning. A survey and an interview protocol were served as data collection instruments. Teacher beliefs toward English learning in Taiwan were fully revealed in this book. The advent of CLT methodologies and the concomitant calls for the integration of language functions into the EFL syllabus have resulted in the concept of ‘corrective feedback’ being a subject of controversy. Although adherents to CLT abandoned this reactive practice on the grounds of its alleged focus on students’ inaccuracies, the present study argues for the importance and necessity of integrating corrective feedback into CLT. The study attempted to provide possible answers to questions that pertain to the effectiveness of feedback or lack thereof, and whether the latter triggers or hinders classroom communication. Corrective feedback has the advantage of structuring students’ output with focus on communication and fluency. Given the centrality of the topic to language education, the book might be of use to EFL/ESL teachers and teacher trainees, as it may also interest general readership.

The proposed book is best described as a linguistically oriented textbook taking the grammar of English as itssubject matter. It is directed to professional teachers of English (ESL and EFL) and their students, as well asthose currently training to become teachers of English. The book is also likely to be of interest to interpreters, translators and other English language professionals. It will explore selected aspects and problem areas ofEnglish from a broadly "functional" linguistic perspective. My experience as a teacher and teacher trainer hasshown me that this perspective has the potential to inspire teachers and students with a genuine enthusiasmfor the grammatical features of English and that it often enables them to "make sense" of the grammar in away that all too often other approaches fail to do.An important focus of the book is on understanding grammar as a series of conventionalized patterns ratherthan a set of rules (which is how grammar has traditionally been presented). Moreover, unlike many othergrammar books, this book emphasizes how the grammatical constructions under consideration are employedin various types of communicative situation, attention being given to the importance of discourse context in interpreting the target forms. In line withcontemporary linguists generally, the approach adopted is descriptive rather than prescriptive. While the main focus is on English, I offer occasionalcomments on how the issue under discussion is expresse...

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2015 in the subject English - Pedagogy, Didactics, Literature Studies, , language: English, abstract: The aim of this evidence-based study is to investigate the use of the bilingual electronic dictionary strategy to improve EFL/ESL secondary school students` vocabulary learning. Three aspects have been studied in depth: the effect of using the electronic bilingual dictionary strategy on improving EFL students' vocabulary learning, the attitudes of the students and the teachers towards the target strategy, and the students` ability to use the bilingual electronic dictionary. The findings of this study indicate that the bilingual electronic dictionary has a positive and an effective role in the process of vocabulary learning. Moreover, the students show positive attitudes towards using the bilingual electronic dictionary. Nevertheless, instructors may show negative attitudes towards the target strategy for certain reasons . The analysis of data further revealed that the critical point that affects the evaluation of the target strategy is the ability to use the electronic dictionary. If the students and teachers are not able to use the bilingual electronic dictionary, they may show negative attitudes towards it and the strategy will then be useless. Thus, the study suggests some recommendations for using the target strategy effectively for EFL/ESL secondary students vocabulary learning and overall lexical acquisition.

Teacher development programmes often fail to produce desired results for lack of conducive syllabus and material. This book is a must read for the ELT community in the Arab world, especially the EFL teachers and the three agencies that are pivotal to educational revolutions: Policy makers, Funding agencies and Teachers as well as a torchbearer for teacher trainers; it actually answers the in-service teachers' need for regular training courses based on their classroom requirements. The teacher in the EL classroom has multiple roles to play: efficient facilitator, monitor, and manager, to mention a few. What is even more challenging is that these roles cannot be defined in any paradigm but have to be constantly re-defined considering the pace at which the knowledge world changes. Teacher development is important also because it has a direct bearing on the learners' improvement. This book aims at tackling all these issues, sets the goals and designs the roads for their realization. Among the very first attempts of its kind in the Arab world, this book can bring teacher development to the core of educational enrichment from its current status of a programme that can be done without.

Optional Infinitive (OI) stage introduces a period in early language acquisition process through which finite and non-finite forms co-occur in similar contexts. With this regard, this book highlights the comprehension and production of OI features including application of infinitive markers, subject-verb agreement, and tense markers by Persian lower and upper intermediate EFL learners. The work aimed at exploring the effect of learners' proficiency level and L1 transfer on the acquisition of these features. Moreover, it attempted to apply its results to Truncation and Unique Checking Constraint as two major models proposed to explain OI features through a critical view. The results can provide second language teachers and syllabus designers with pedagogical feedback and helpful information on the related features attributed to each proficiency level.
