This study is an attempt to analyze the discriminatory practices in the public sector which the disabled employees faced in institutionalized form in Turkey Their employment is an obligation to be fulfilled by law and therefore they are considered around “burden” paradigm that the public sector constitutes the traces of discrimination. The combination of institutional discrimination and disability harassment constitutes on the one hand “invisible barriers” to satisfactory employment in public sector, and on the other hand make discrimination visible in it. State, its institutions and society have shaped the lives of disabled people through modeling and defining them. In other words, the mainstream activities of disabled people are influenced by disability models and definitions. Medical model conceptualizes the “normality” and excludes people who do not fit to the conceptualization of “normal” which sets a ground for marginalization of disabled people. In this context, employment conditions are greatly influenced by medical model adopted by the public sector in Turkey.

Social factors affect health. Some societies have effective institutions and healthy citizens while other societies do not. Social capital may be an explanation for such differences. The concept of social capital has recently been introduced in the public health literature as a possible explanation for findings regarding inequalities in health. Addressing social inequalities, distrust, discrimination and other social conditions presents new and different challenges than past public health problems, and it seems that social determinants of poor health can only be addressed by societal solutions. Many studies have assessed the effects of horizontal trust and discrimination on health. Little academic literature exists on vertical trust as well as anticipated discrimination. This book, therefore, deals with the effects of vertical dimension of trust and anticipated ethnic discrimination by employers on health. Three separate studies are analyzed. The results should be particularly useful to health policy makers and employers in their employment strategies.

The purpose of this study is to investigate legislation and leading cases concerning positive discrimination in the European Union, with a particular focus on the recent debate about the most radical positive action measure: the implementation of women's quotas by supranational legislation. This study seeks to answer the question if such a radical derogation from the equal treatment principle can be tolerated, keeping in mind the fundamental character of this principle in European law. The concept of substantive equality will be analysed and set against the ECJ case law under review. In 1899 a law was passed in New York State licensing individual workers in the tenements for certain trades. In 1904 this law was superseded, primarily at the instigation of the settlement, by one licensing the entire tenement house, thus making the owner of the house responsible. In 1913 a law recommended by the New York State Factory Investigating Commission was passed by the legislature; this law brought under its jurisdiction all articles manufactured in the tenements, prohibited entirely the home manufacture of food articles, dolls or dolls' clothing, children's or infants' wearing apparel, and forbade the employment of children under fourteen on any articles made in tenements. All our experience points to the conclusion that it is impossible to control manufacture in the tenements. This book studies some important issues in China's labor market, such as rural labor migration, employment and wage discrimination, the new dual labor market, and economic returns on schooling, using the newer and representative data and advanced estimation models. This approach has yielded many interesting results, including a solution to the dilemma of two ongoing crises since 2004: the rural labor surplus and severe shortage of migrant labor. While male workers generally received less favorable treatment and consequently enjoyed a lower average employment probability than female workers in 1996, they also received preferential treatment over female workers, who otherwise had identical worker characteristics in 2005. We provide new estimates for male-female hourly wage differentials in urban China, and our results indicate that the hourly wage differentials and the unexplained part of the hourly wage differentials are smaller than the differentials obtained by ignoring the sample selection bias. We study China's new dual labor market, which is shifting from a rural migration versus urban workers setup to informal workers versus formal workers setup, and present some interesting results. Our study is the first to adopt the IV methodology and the Heckman (1979) two-step procedure simultaneously for the estimation of economic returns on schooling in China.
