Prakash Younger Boats on the Marne. Jean Renoir.s Critique of Modernity

Boats on the Marne offers an original interpretation of Jean Renoir's celebrated films of the 1930s, treating them as a coherent narrative of philosophical response to the social and political crises of the times. Grounded in a reinterpretation of the foundational film-philosopher Andre Bazin, and drawing on work from a range of disciplines (film studies, art history, comparative literature, political and cultural history), the book's coordinated consideration of Renoir's films, writings, and interviews demonstrates his obsession with the concept of romanticism. Renoir saw romanticism to be a defining feature of modernity, a hydra-headed malady which intimately shapes our personal lives, culture, and politics, blinding us and locking us into agonistic relationships and conflict. While mapping the popular manifestations of romanticism that Renoir engaged with at the time, this study restores the philosophic weight of his critique by tracing the phenomenon back to its roots in the work and influence of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who first articulated conceptions of human desire, identity, community, and history that remain pervasive today. Prakash Younger argues that Renoir's films of the 1930s articulate a multi-stranded narrative through which the director thinks about various aspects of romanticism and explores the liberating possibilities of an alternative paradigm illuminated by the thought of Plato, Montaigne, and the early Enlightenment. When placed in the co...

Mahmoud Reda A. H. The Effects of English on Arabic Broadcasts

The Effects of English on Arabic Broadcasts: A Study in Comparative Pragmatics describes the linguistic and cultural impact of English on Arabic. The impact of English on Arabic broadcasts has led to controversial reactions among Arabs, to comply with the cultural concepts and beliefs, to counteract heterodox beliefs and foreign concepts, or to interact with them. These three reactions to the torrential influences of English culture correspond to novel linguistic effects on Arabic particularly in the uses of speech acts, deictics and prosodic features. The book comprises five chapters; in the first two theoretical chapters the author introduces his own views of the User's Dynamic Knowledge of Context (UDKC), an original theoretical approach to context to suit the comparative analyses of speech acts, deictic and prosodic features in the following three analytic chapters.

Master's Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Law - Comparative Legal Systems, Comparative Law, grade: B+, University of Auckland (Law Faculty), course: Climate Change Law, language: English, abstract: This paper deals with the linkage of international human rights and climate change. It focuses on the approach to deduce legal claims in the form of compensations and concrete measures from international human rights in the course of impairments through climate change. This paper shall give a short overview on the issue climate change in general, including its causes, effects and the current political strategies. It furthermore provides a synopsis on how human rights are impaired by global warming and climate change effects.Unfortunately, this essay will come to the conclusion that the international human rights approach struggles with functioning as a solitary legal basis in that context and with stepping beyond the just moral implication. Human rights' legislative potential rather lies 'in the development of more encompassing and more inclusive legal and political strategies. Human rights may advisably be instrumentalized to strengthen political debates and be used as an incitement to set up enforceable and balanced agreements on reasonable measures of equalization and support.

Magdalena Siemieńczuk Crime and Punishment in William Faulkner.s Light in August

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 5.0, University of Gdansk (Philology), course: English Philology, language: English, abstract: In the works of William Faulkner we can observe some rules by which a person is treated like an outcast for less detrimental deeds that are perceived as social crimes. It is not possible to write about human beings without taking into consideration the cultural context of their behavior. Culture changes historically (it is different nowadays from one that occurred about 80 years ago in the course of William Faulkner's life). Although there are many ways of writing about human beings (of perceiving them and interpreting their actions), there is no one particular method which would explain everything. To my mind, the best way of describing the problem presented in "Light in August" (1932), which would guarantee a compelling introduction of the matter, can be analysis of this novel in the context of psychoanalysis of Sigmund Freud, Carl Gustav Jung, and sociology of Emile Durkheim.I am aware that the above-mentioned methods have been extensively criticized over the years. However, the basis for this criticism has derived from the occurrence of some new phenomena in society, the phenomena which were not taken into consideration by the earlier psychologists and researchers of culture. Nevertheless, the cultural, psychological, and sociological mechanisms described by William Faulkner are c...

Ann-Christine Ehret Talent Management. An Instrument of Strategic Human Resources Management.

Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - Personnel and Organisation, University of Plymouth, language: English, abstract: This study provides an investigation on Talent Management in German mid-sized enterprises. The purpose of this research is to explore whether Talent Management is an instrument usable to overcome external challenges, such as demographic changes as well as a shortage in skilled labour, to enhance organisational performance and to remain competitive. The research determines that, Talent Management can be seen as a part of strategic Human Resources Management and in this context, as a high performance working system in order to develop, motivate and empower talented employees. Since empirical data in the national context of Germany are restricted on the one hand and, on the other hand, research efforts regarding Talent Management in small and medium-sized enterprises are of less significance, qualitative research methods were used in order to gather deeper insights. Three in-depth expert interviews were conducted, providing valuable information regarding the conceptualisation and operationalisation of Talent Management in the context of German mid-sized enterprises. The findings reveal that, what is of strong importance within small and medium sized enterprises in general is the expansion of the term talent to all employees and their skills and abilities instead of seeking for high potentials and so-called A-players. It identifies the main feminist influences that have shaped the movement liberal, radical, third world and cosmopolitan and exposes how the Western, legalist, state-centric, and liberal biases of mainstream human rights discourse impede the realisation of human rights in womens lives everywhere. The book traces the evolution of the womens human rights movement through an examination of its key issues, debates, and practical interventions in international law and policy arenas. This includes efforts to: Develop global gender equality norms via the UN Womens Convention Frame violence against women as a human rights issue Address gender-based crimes in conflict situations, include women in conflict resolution and post-conflict reconstruction, and challenge new forms of militarism Highlight the gendered human rights dimensions of widening inequalities in a context of neo-liberal globalisation Develop human rights responses to anti-feminist fundamentalist movements with a focus on reproductive and sexual rights Ultimately, Women's Human Rights reaffirms a commitment to critically reinterpreted universal human rights principles and demonstrates the vital role that bottom-up, transnational movements play in making them a reality in women's lives.

Positioning English for Specific Purposes in an English Language Teaching Context

With the unrelenting spread of globalization, the English language has been firmly established as the Lingua Franca. Now more than ever, the importance of learning English is paramount within nearly all professional and educational sectors. English for Specific Purposes (ESP) has long been accepted as an effective method for teaching English as a foreign language. In recent years, it has experienced an increasing presence in secondary and tertiary education across the globe. This is predominantly due to its learner-centered approach that focuses on developing linguistic competence in the student’s specific discipline, may that be academics, business or tourism, for example. Positioning English for Specific Purposes in an English Language Teaching Context attempts to present and define the relevance and scope of ESP within English Language teaching. From mobile phones as educational tools to the language needs of medical students, the contributors to this volume examine and propose different epistemological and methodological aspects of ESP teaching. Its unique approach to ESP marks this volume out as an important and necessary contribution to existing ESP literature, and one that will be of use to both researchers and practitioners of ESP.

Not so long ago, all a student studying human evolution needed was a familiarity with the relatively sparse fossil record and what limited information there was about the context of the sites, a basic knowledge of gross anatomy and archeology, and an understanding of simple analytical methods. Times have changed. The fossil record has grown exponentially, imaging techniques have advanced dramatically, quantitative methods have burgeoned, and molecular biology has revolutionized our understanding of genetics, evolutionary history, and development. Added to this are advances in the archeological, biological, and earth sciences that help interpret the context of the fossil evidence and reconstruct behavior. But presently there is nowhere students of human evolution cna easily find out about topics as disparate as ameloblast, Coopers Cave, daily secretion rate, the effect hypothesis, homeobox genes, insolation, phylogenetically independent contrasts, quantitative trait locus, semicircular canals, and tephrostratigraphy. The Wiley Blackwell Student Dictionary of Human Evolution contains upwards of 2500 entries, all drafted with an eye on the student user. It is an indispensable source for those studying human evolution.

In this context, the business practices of the multinational enterprises Coca-Cola Company and Nestlé S.A. are examined. This work exclusively uses open sources to obtain a comprehensive view and to analyse the proponents' and opponents' arguments with regard to the respective business practices. Gary Elliott Developmental Psychology. The Developmental Context

Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Psychology - Developmental Psychology, Atlantic International University, language: English, abstract: The family system is the primary context for the child's development and undoubtedly has the greatest impact. The nature-nurture debate continues with regards the human development but this paper focuses its attention on the child's development within its family dynamic; how the child learns to socialise within the family social system and how social issues in the broader sense impact on the child's development.Beyond the primary context of the family, social interactions in the child's peer group and the schooling environment aid in moulding his social development. The impact of the school environment and peer group selection will be discussed in the course of this paper. In addition to the school environment, children make use of media devices and media input more than they did a decade ago and this may also have a profound impact on the child's perceptions of themselves and the world around them; ultimately steering their development in a particular direction. The importance and influence of family relationships, peer relationships and socialisation within these dynamics will dominate the content of this paper. Why a family dynamic? The purpose of the family unit, from its inception with our early ancestors, was and continues to be focused on ensuring the survival of the species. The introduction of offsprin...

Nouha Rouabah Are International Human Rights Instruments Effective In Protecting People.s Rights from the Global Effects of Climate Change.

Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Public International Law and Human Rights, grade: A, Birkbeck, University of London, language: English, abstract: This study seeks to address the issue of climate change through a human rights lens by focusing on the causes of climate change and its impacts on both the environment and human rights. It highlights the close link between capitalist industrialization and environmental degradation and explains how this consequently leads to human rights violations. This research tackles human rights approach to climate change with a special focus on international human rights instruments mainly the two international covenants, the ICCPR and the ICESCR, it seeks to understand whether they impose international obligations on states to protect human rights from the adverse effects of climate change and how those imposed duties can be enforced to effectively protect people's rights.Unfortunately, this paper will reach to the conclusion that the existing human rights law does not adequately protect human rights from the lethal threat of climate change, due to the absence of a universally recognized right to a healthy environment, moreover, despite the possibility of the extraterritorial application of the ICESCR, the political will of states to cooperate under the provisions of the covenant to face the issue of climate change seems to be also absent.

Conrad Joseph Tales of Hearsay

Joseph Conrad was a Polish-British writer regarded as one of the greatest novelists to write in the English language. Though he did not speak English fluently until his twenties, he was a master prose stylist who brought a non-English sensibility into English literature. He wrote stories and novels, many with a nautical setting, that depict trials of the human spirit in the midst of an impassive, inscrutable universe. This volume published in 1911 contains four tales; The Warrior's Soul, Prince Roman, The Tale, and The Black Mate.

Kathleen M McCann Comfort My People. Saith your God

In an age of human distress and alienation, this book seeks to establish that the major cause is found in the breakdown of relationships between people. Drawing on experience and research done by psychotherapists such as Erik Erikson, Abraham Maslow, John Bowlby, Donald Winnicott, Sue Gerhardt and Sarah Litvinoff, and placing this understanding within a biblical context, the author has achieved a relatively short and readable work.Spending some years in classes for Counsellor Training, the author saw similarities in how people behave within all human groups. She sees comfort as "soothing balm to the afflicted human spirit" and has sought to place this within the context of human relations, with safety, belonging and acceptance underpinning human welfare. From morality to the imperative of containing strong emotions and from jealousy and anger to unity, this book is a striking attempt to embrace the problems we all encounter in today's society.

In this book, Mill expounds his concept of individual freedom within the context of his ideas on history and the state. On Liberty depends on the idea that society progresses from lower to higher stages and that this progress culminates in the emergence of a system of representative democracy. It is within the context of this form of government that Mill envisions the growth and development of liberty.

The book features analyses of: the legal contextand parameters of SEI; research history on SEI; SEI language policy and policy implementationaccording to situated context; and the educational priorities and legal rights of ELs. The Miseducation of EnglishLearners also presents and considers the implementation of SEI in comparative contexts from variousperspectives including teacher education, the classroom, and legal. In several of the chapters,SEI implementation is examined in concert with other factors that have effected the teaching andprogress of ELs such as Senate Bill 2042 (2001) that overhauled the teacher education process in California, and the federal No ChildLeft Behind legislation (signed into law on January 8, 2002). Gebhard Deissler A Review of the Intercultural Paradigm

Document from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, , language: English, abstract: As this research comes to its provisional end, after an exploration of the inner-outer horizons of culture in quest for a missing link for its management in line with the requirements of our global, multicultural age in global business, geopolitics and other material and immaterial systems, we may assume that, based on a more complete representation of human nature we are approaching more comprehensive cultural solutions as well. If one succeeds in embedding the intercultural acquis in the holistic structure of man with its naturally beneficial axiomatic for the individual and society, locally, regionally and globally, the hoped for global cultural Eldorado is within human reach, whatever negativity may seem to bar the way. We have extended human cultural awareness so as to understand it within the context of life as a whole, where it reveals itself as a factor of wholistic human identity, evolution and enhanced creativity, unless it is mismanaged due to limited cultural awareness.

Helen Omole Extracting cultural relationships from helicopter accidents

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2014 in the subject Sociology - Culture, Technology, Peoples / Nations, , language: English, abstract: This paper explores the role of culture and its relationships in helicopter accidents based on the cultural differences between two different countries. Helicopter operations in Nigeria and the UK share many common features including a prominent offshore oil industry that places heavy demands on helicopter transport, but they differ in terms of the cultural context within which these operations take place. Nigeria shows themes associated with high cultural context. The UK, themes were predominately associated with low cultural context. Air accident investigation reports were subjected to an in-depth theme-based content analysis in order to distil the role of culture in their causation. This analysis was selected as the means by which to extract cultural factors from the reports and variables influencing human error leading to accidents. Text and cluster analysis was used as an exploratory tool to observe patterns by grouping the nodes that shared similar themes. The study shows two key findings. First, the sampled UK and Nigerian accident reports differ in respect to weak and strong uncertainty avoidance. Secondly, and more importantly, cultural factors, although not currently well represented in accident analysis were prominent in the sampled accident reports.

During the past decades however multiple names and definitions have been established including Black English (BE), Ebonics, Black Vernacular English (BVE), and African American Vernacular English (AAVE). The term "Negro Non-standard English" used until the late 1960s has been abolished by now due to the fact that it insinuates the presence of a superior "White Standard English" In the preface of her book African American English: A Linguistic Introduction Lisa GREEN points out that there has been a substantial amount of linguistic research on AAE, oftentimes however neglecting a closer look at the structural patterns and features. This is where the focus of the paper presented shall be on. After some developmental and socio-historical background information concerning AAE, phonological, morphological, and grammatical attributes will be examined and subsequently illustrated by an exemplary analysis of three different rap songs. The focal point here lies in the lyrical/ textual presentation of AAE in rap music and not in the actual vocal performance. The aim of this paper and the entailed analyses is t...
