Curriculum materials are among the most pervasive and powerful influences on schoolmathematics. In many mathematics classes, student assignments, the questions theteacher asks, the ways students are grouped, the forms of assessment, and much moreoriginate in curriculum materials. At the same time, teachers have considerable latitude inhow they use their curriculum materials. Two classes making use of the same materialsmay differ markedly in what mathematics content is emphasized and how students are engaged in learning that content. This volume considers a variety of research tools for investigating the enactment of mathematics curriculum materials, describing the conceptualization, development, and uses of seven sets of tools. Mathematics education researchers, curriculum developers, teacher educators, district supervisors, teacher leaders, and math coaches will find insights that canimprove their work, and guidance for selecting, adapting, and using tools for understanding the complex relationshipbetween curriculum materials and their enactment in classroom instruction.

Today in urban education, schools are forced to keep up and compete with students nationally with high-stake testing. Standardized tests are often bias in nature and often do not measure the true ability of a student. Conventional testing also distorts educational goals. Therefore, using authentic assessments can provide an alternative way to measure what students know. Authentic assessment brings change to curriculum and instruction. It enhances development for students while redefining the curriculum. It provides stakeholders which may include parents, students, administrators, and community members with evidence of learning too. This analysis should help shed some light on how to promote urban middle school students' learning using alternative assessments.

High stakes testing, standards, and accountability politics is taking us away from the importance of the affectivedomain in curriculum development. This critical learning domain is often an unrecognized and infrequentlyconsidered topic in the literature. Through this book we extend the current knowledge base byaddressing a curriculum model developed in the 1980s. We add a 2012 knowledge base as we delineate therole of self-perceptions in school-related learning, how middle level curriculum affects self-perceptions, andthe type of curriculum planning which enhances self-perceptions and improves learning in the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains. The combination of sound psychological principles and practical teaching and curriculum suggestions with an empirical basis makes the book attractiveto both higher education and local school professional libraries. In the former it will serve as the primary text in graduate and advanced undergraduatemiddle level education programs and practices courses. It might also be a primary text in courses or workshops in affective education or otherexperiences which emphasize affective, values, and self-concept. It also has potential as a supplementary text in undergraduate educational psychologycourses. At the in-service level this book could be used as a workshop resource or as a professional reference for middle level teachers, administrators, curriculum workers, and supervisors. Our interest in young adolescents and their school setti...

The most important factor affecting student learning isn’t standards, textbooks, or testing--it’s teachers. And when it comes to improving learning, research has shown teachers what works. But the real challenge comes when it’s time to do what works and do it well. In this book, Jane E. Pollock explains how making the right adjustments in four critical areas of practice—curriculum, instruction, assessment, and feedback—can help any teacher improve student learning significantly. Here, you’ll find out how to Create a classroom curriculum document that’s truly useful and incorporates robust concepts, generalizations, and procedures. Plan instruction that’s focused on helping students become master learners who can apply information and skills, not just do schoolwork. Design varied classroom assessments that yield evidence of mastery and pinpoint where further instruction is required. Use criterion-based feedback to improve individual student achievement and refine instruction.Along with step-by-step procedures, practical guidelines, and specific models, this book features the voices of individual teachers who share their experience using the author’s “Big Four” approach. Like them, you may find it’s the missing link you need to transform your pedagogy and achieve unprecedented levels of both student success and professional satisfaction.

Higher education is expanding, internationalizing, and changing rapidly around the world. Yet, many of the broader international higher education community and funders are unaware that much of what the United States has achieved in quality higher education derives from the student affairs staff. This volume addresses the opportunities and challenges in creating student learning and development programs and strategies that are culturally appropriate and use best practices from regions around the world. This volume includes: suggestions using the whole institutional environment—curriculum and co-curriculum; examples from China, Mexico, Singapore, South Africa, and the United Kingdom; and holistic and engaging approaches through student affairs, student development, and student services. This will be of interest to all those who value quality higher education no matter what their role. The intent is to convince broader constituencies of the merit of enhancing the student experience so that students worldwide will benefit from enhanced learning and development opportunities. This is the 175th volume of the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Higher Education. Addressed to presidents, vice presidents, deans, and other higher education decision makers on all kinds of campuses, it provides timely information and authoritative advice about major issues and administrative problems confronting every institution.

Paths to College and Career Jossey-Bass and PCG Education are proud to bring the Paths to College and Career English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum and professional development resources for grades 6–12 to educators across the country. Originally developed for EngageNY and written with a focus on the shifts in instructional practice and student experiences the standards require, Paths to College and Career includes daily lesson plans, guiding questions, recommended texts, scaffolding strategies and other classroom resources. The Paths Writing Units, Argument Writing, Informative Writing, and Narrative Writing, complement the full instructional program and can also be used independently, providing in-depth writing instruction to support all students in grades 9–12 in meeting grade level standards. To emphasize the relationship between reading and writing, each Writing Unit includes accessible model texts that exemplify key elements of each text type, and source texts that provide a topic for the unit writing assignment. Individual lessons guide students through the writing process, providing instruction on grammar and conventions and highlighting collaboration and reflection as key elements of effective writing. Students' final essays are assessed using a checklist developed by the class over the course of the unit. The organization and distinctive content of the model and source texts in each unit afford teachers the flexibility to implement each unit independently of the others, and at any point during the curriculum. For example, a unit may be implemented to assess students' writing prior to implementation of the standard curriculum, to scaffold writing instruction leading into a writing assessment, or to support struggling writers by addressing gaps in skills as demonstrated in previous assessments. The Paths Writing Units provide teachers with invaluable opportunities to engage students as active participants in their own learning at every stage of the writing process, and to customize instruction to meet the varying needs of all students.

However, it is important to balance between the two instructions since explicit instruction may work better in learning some specific features of language.

This study intended to analyze the research presented in several curriculum and instruction congresses in Turkey to identify the tendencies in the field. To this end, it used the survey model. Document analysis, a qualitative research technique, was used to collect data. A total of 935 studies presented in three national and one international curriculum and instruction congress conducted in Turkey were analyzed. Of these, 107 were full texts, and 828 were abstracts. Then, content analysis was carried out. The analysis of the sample also demonstrated that few of them are directly related to curriculum development. The study finally highlights the importance of clearly explaining the methodology, data collection, and data analysis strategies under the relevant headings, organizing the abstracts in a way to reflect the structure of the study for higher quality research, and further expanding the field by increasing the number of studies conducted and shared in curriculum and instruction congresses.

Diet related chronic diseases are epidemic in the United States, and restaurant clients demand nutritious meals. The curriculum of the nutrition class in the culinary school includes the concepts of nutrition that are essential for the aspiring chefs to know in order to meet the needs of the future clients. However, culinary students' performance in the nutrition class was unsatisfactory. Lecture was the main instructional tool in the class, which could be the cause of the students' poor performance because modern students expect expert instructors using educational technology. The action research study examined the effect of the web-based multimedia instruction on the culinary students' learning and academic performance. The results of the study revealed a statistically significant (p < .05) difference in academic performance between mean test scores for the treatment and the control classes. Have you ever wondered why students too often have only a rudimentary understanding of mathematics, why even rich and exciting hands-on learning does not always result in "real" learning of new concepts? The answer lies in whether students have actually learned mathematical concepts, rather than merely memorizing facts and formulas.Concept-Rich Mathematics Instruction is based on the constructivist view that concepts are not simply facts to be memorized and later recalled, but rather knowledge that learners develop through an active process of adapting to new experiences. The teacher's role is critical in this process. When teachers prompt students to reflect on their experiences and report and answer questions verbally, students must re-examine and even revise their concepts of reality.Meir Ben-Hur offers expert guidance on all aspects of Concept-Rich Mathematics Instruction, including• Identifying the core concepts of the mathematics curriculum.• Planning instructional sequences that build upon concepts that students already understand.• Designing learning experiences that provoke thoughtful discussions about new concepts and prepare students to apply these concepts on their own.• Identifying student errors, particularly those caused by preconceptions, as important sources of information and as key instructional tools.• Conducting classroom dialogues that are rich in alternative representations.• Using a variety of formative assessment methods to reveal the state...

An essential resource for teachers, administrators, RtI teams, and Professional Learning Communities who want to make RtI work for all students. The great promise of RtI is the potential to reach and teach all students. That promise becomes a reality when the heart of an RtI system is a well-designed, Tier 1 program taught by well-prepared teachers who recognize the power of data to inform instruction. When all students receive good first instruction in such a system, the number of referrals for intervention goes down, proficient students maximize their learning, and gifted students grow intellectually. Drawing on their experience with hundreds of educators, the authors offer a step-by-step process for constructing a strong Tier 1 curriculum, identifying the essentials of data-driven instruction, and analyzing instructional strategies that lead to good first instruction for all students. Real world examples and hands-on activities in every chapter help educators to:• Realize the importance of a standards-based, logically sequenced Tier 1 curriculum to help students learn• Understand the power of data to inform instruction before, during, and after teaching• Recognize the relationship between cognitive preparation for teaching and student achievement• Employ effective instructional practices • Analyze the strengths and weaknesses of a school or district RtI systemWithout strong Tier 1 instruction RtI will become a system of never-ending interventions rather than excellent firs...

Jong Soo Park Christian Education Curriculum for the Digital Generation

This book is about exploring and presenting a model of digital-based curriculum for Christian education suitable for the digital ways of learning, communicating, and thinking. Park discusses the limitations of analog-based curricula, most of current curricula, and necessities for digital-oriented ones. Then, he provides a new model of curriculum--curriculum as software. Curriculum as software is a curricular framework for embracing digital culture like open-flat network, service-centered management, interactive communication, and offline-online hybrid learning space. It consists of four spiral stages: analysis, design, simulation, and service. In the process of designing units, 4R Movement--a new learning theory--is utilized to encourage today's young people to construct their own knowledge after critically analyzing various resources of information. 4R-embeded courses are implemented in the four movements: reflection, reinterpretation, re-formation, and re-creation.""Educating the digital generation in multicultural society is a big challenge because of their unique ways of thinking, communicating, and learning. Christian educators and parents alike struggle with the same issue in nurturing their students and children--however there are only a few books of Christian education curriculum on that issue. Thus this book deserves praise and attention. Jong Soo Park's research is like priming water to draw new insights and creativity for educating today's young...

The authors provide a lucid, actionable, and evidence-based prescription for building an integrated learning system to replace the hodgepodge of miscellany that we have inherited. They illustrate the kind of conversations and transformations that could raise the value of and change the prospects for higher education.»—John Tagg, author, The Learning Paradigm College «This book offers a powerful, realistic, and much-needed plan for changing how learning happens in higher education. Anyone concerned about improving teaching and students' learning needs to read this book!»—Terry Doyle, author, Helping Students Learn in a Learner-Centered Environment «To help achieve the imperative to make our universities more learner-centered, the authors focus on curriculum redesign and offer a solid theoretical approach combined with applied skills that institutional leaders and faculty can use to attain their goals. A volume in Curriculum WindowsSeries Editor: Thomas S. Poetter, Miami University, Oxford, Ohio,Curriculum Windows: What Curriculum Theorists of the 1980s Can Teach Us about Schools and Society Today is an effort by students of curriculum studies, along with their professor, to interpret and understand curriculum texts and theorists of the 1980s in contemporary terms. The authors explore how key books/authors from the curriculum field of the 1980s illuminate new possibilities forward for us as scholar educators today: How might the theories, practices, and ideas wrapped up in curriculum texts of the 1980s still resonate with us, allow us to see backward in time and forward in time - all at the same time? How might these figurative windows of insight, thought, ideas, fantasy, and fancy make us think differently about curriculum, teaching, learning, students, education, leadership, and schools? Further, how might they help us see more clearly, even perhaps put us on a path to correct the mistakes and missteps of intervening decades and of today? The chapter authors and editor revisit and interpret several of the most important works in the curriculum field of the 1980s. The book's Foreword is by renowned curriculum theorist William H. Schubert.

This book sets out to give a general overview of the availability of technology in learning a new language at a university; to outline the various uses of information and communication technologies in this sector; to provide a few, selected studies of best practice, illustrating meaningful deployment of these resources; and to point towards future developments and possible implementation in the coming decade. However, the question rises as to effectiveness of these technologies in learning a new language as well as the quality of instruction provided. For this reason, this study was put together to examine the effectiveness of using technology in learning a new language at a university. The clusters of information included in this study are: technology in the classroom, using technology to learn a new language, and the effectiveness of technology to learn a new language.

A practical guide to deeper instruction—a framework for challenging, engaging, and empowering students of all ages For schools to meet ambitious new standards and prepare all students for college, careers, and life, research has shown unequivocally that nothing is more important that the quality of daily instruction. Learning That Lasts presents a new vision for classroom instruction that sharpens and deepens the quality of lessons in all subject areas. It is the opposite of a 'teacher-proof' solution. Instead, it is predicated on a model of instruction that honors teachers as creative and expert planners of learning experiences for their students and who wish to continuously grow in their instructional and content knowledge. It is not a theoretical vision. It is a model of instruction refined in some of the nation's most successful public schools—schools that are beating the odds to create remarkable achievement—sited primarily in urban and rural low-income communities. Using case studies and examples of powerful learning at all grade levels and in all disciplines, Learning That Lasts is a guide to creating classrooms that promote deeper understanding, higher order thinking, and student independence. Through text and companion videos, readers will enter inspiring classrooms where students go beyond basics to become innovators, collaborators, and creators. Learning That Lasts embraces a three-dimensional view of student achievement that includes mastery of knowledge and skills, character, and high-quality work. It is a guide for teachers who wish to make learning more meaningful, memorable, and connected to life, and inspire students to do more than they think possible.
