Scientific Essay from the year 2001 in the subject Environmental Sciences, grade: 7.0, University of Twente (Cartesius institute), course: MBA Environmental and Energy Managmenet, language: English, abstract: This manual contains a detailed description of the Environmental Management System. It also contains procedures and work instructions, which are also requirements of the Quality Management System (QMS) and Health and Safety Management (H&S). Both the QMS and H&S will not be discussed in detail in this advisory report. The Quality Management System is a change mechanism, which is targeted at developing a customer driven organization through integrative working practices. The underlying purpose of Total Quality Management has much common ground with the EMS. Health and Safety Management can be regarded as a set of external controls dictated to business and which establishes and fulfills specific targets. In the project of wastewater minimization, the Health and Safety Department helps the team by carrying out the necessary risk assessment of operations and develops related control activities. The Health and Safety Manager also has a role as member of the project team, so the integration between the systems will be fully established.Effective health, safety (and environmental management) is not common sense but is based on a common understanding of risks and how to control them brought about through good management.

David Vogel The Politics of Precaution. Regulating Health, Safety, and Environmental Risks in Europe and the United States

2702 руб.
The Politics of Precaution examines the politics of consumer and environmental risk regulation in the United States and Europe over the last five decades, explaining why America and Europe have often regulated a wide range of similar risks differently. It finds that between 1960 and 1990, American health, safety, and environmental regulations were more stringent, risk averse, comprehensive, and innovative than those adopted in Europe. But since around 1990, the book shows, global regulatory leadership has shifted to Europe. What explains this striking reversal? David Vogel takes an in-depth, comparative look at European and American policies toward a range of consumer and environmental risks, including vehicle air pollution, ozone depletion, climate change, beef and milk hormones, genetically modified agriculture, antibiotics in animal feed, pesticides, cosmetic safety, and hazardous substances in electronic products. He traces how concerns over such risks--and pressure on political leaders to do something about them--have risen among the European public but declined among Americans. Vogel explores how policymakers in Europe have grown supportive of more stringent regulations while those in the United States have become sharply polarized along partisan lines. And as European policymakers have grown more willing to regulate risks on precautionary grounds, increasingly skeptical American policymakers have called for higher levels of scientific certainty before imposing addition...

Although the construction and engineering sector makes important contributions to the economic, social, and environmental objectives of a nation, it has a notorious reputation for being an unsafe industry in which to work. Despite the fact that safety performance in the industry has improved, injuries and fatalities still occur frequently. To address this, the industry needs to evolve further by integrating safety into all decision making processes. Strategic Safety Management in Construction and Engineering takes a broad view of safety from a strategic decision making and management perspective with a particular focus on the need to balance and integrate ‘science’ and ‘art’ when implementing safety management. The principles covered here include the economics of safety, safety climate and culture, skills for safety, safety training and learning, safety in design, risk management, building information modelling, and safety research methods and the research-practice nexus. They are integrated into a strategic safety management framework which comprises strategy development, implementation, and evaluation. Practical techniques are included to apply the principles in the context of the construction and engineering industry and projects. Case studies are also provided to demonstrate the localised context and applications of the principles and techniques in practice.

An environmental impact assessment (EIA) is an assessment of the possible positive or negative impact that a proposed project may have on the environment. This project is an Environmental Impact Assessment report for the proposed expansion of water distribution from Kemtilil water project in Kenya. Saos centre residents and others on downstream suffered over the past years and continues suffering an acute shortage of potable water, commissioning of the proposed project would therefore allow coping with the present shortages. This justified the need for EIA. Consultants carried out environmental study at the proposed site and also the surrounding areas. The environmental study comprised the following activities: mobilization, liaison and consensus building with stakeholders, a scooping exercise, desk and field studies, data analysis, impact assessment, health and safety issues associated with the proposed water project. Evaluation of positive and negative Environmental Impacts was done. Finally, Environmental monitoring and management plan was developed. The proposed Kemtilil Water Project was seen as a major infrastructure project, socially acceptable and recommended for approval.

Examining several contemporary environmental controversies—including water consumption, food safety, and air pollution—this guide illustrates how a critical perspective can aid in understanding such complex social, economic, and political issues. Key concepts in environmental social science are introduced to clarify controversies and address broader questions such as How do our consumption decisions affect ecosystems? Can we rely on governments to maintain environmental well being? Do those living in rural areas see the environment differently from urban dwellers? and Is sustainability possible? The discussion both examines the disputes and demonstrates that ecological problems and their solutions are as much social and political as they are scientific. Activism resources at the end of each chapter are included as are suggestions on ways to reduce individual ecological footprints.

This book investigated the role that local environmental factors play in influencing perceptions of crime and safety across three neighbourhoods within the Region of Peel, Ontario. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with local experts to examine their perceptions of crime and safety, and elements of the built and social environment that may influence these perceptions and identified dimensions of social capital that serve as pathways through which broader environmental determinants of crime and safety can become embedded at the local neighbourhood level. Findings of this research revealed that the perceived relationships between the social and built environment and crime are complex and that dimensions of social capital such as informal social ties serve as a mediator between the environment and perceptions about crime and how perceived and actual crime may be reduced by modifying elements of the built and social environment in order to strengthen local dimensions of social capital.

Consistency and Credibility? identifies in its first part the extent of correlation between actual environmental performance, the use of physical environmental performance indicators and corporate environmental reporting in the paper and electricity industries in Germany and the UK. The results suggest environmental performance is mainly country-related, possibly due to differences in environmental legislation. This implies that any assessment of the relationship between environmental and economic performance of firms needs to be based on actual environmental performance data and cannot take reporting quality or information about the intensity of use of specific tools, such as environmental performance indicators as a proxy variable. The second part of the book therefore analyses the relationship between environmental and economic performance. Based on the results, the book's second part concludes that for firms in environmentally-intensive industries it is difficult to create a positive link between their environmental and economic performance, and that market settings as well as strategy considerations both can have an effect, but situational aspects determine which of these dominates.Consistency and Credibility? provides useful information for practitioners as well as deeper insights for academics about the link of environmental reporting and environmental performance measurement and how this interacts with economic success. It thus reveals valuable strategic insights ...

The strategic management models of the late Igor Ansoff predict that the effectiveness of organizational strategies and management capabilities depends in part on the turbulence of the business environment in which the organization operates. Ansoff defined five levels of turbulence, and identified the characteristics of strategic aggressiveness and management capabilities that are most effective for a given level of turbulence. Greg Lorton adapted Ansoff’s corporate models to environmental management systems within organizations, surveying 78 businesses and government organizations in California. He found that these models continue to be effective when applied to environmental management systems. He further studied the elements of environmental management strategies and how they relate to environmental strategic aggressiveness, management capabilities, and performance on environmental issues. While proactive environmental management systems generally lead to improved environmental performance, in some cases more conservative systems can also be effective.

Many of the frontiers of environmental economics research are at the interface of large-scale and long-term environmental change with national and global economic systems. This is also where some of the most of challenging environmental policy issues occur. Volume 3 of the Handbook of Environmental Economics provides a synthesis of the latest theory on economywide and international environmental issues and a critical review of models for analyzing those issues. It begins with chapters on the fundamental relationships that connect environmental resources to economic growth and long-run social welfare. The following chapters consider how environmental policy differs in a general-equiIibrium setting from a partial-equilibrium setting and in a distorted economy from a perfect economy. The volume closes with chapters on environmental issues that cross or transcend national borders, such as trade and the environment, biodiversity conservation, acid rain, ozone depletion, and global climate change. The volume provides a useful reference for not only natural resource and environmental economists but also international economists, development economists, and macroeconomists. Sylvia Hood Washington’s Packing Them In provides strong and often startling evidence of the depths and complexities of environmental racism in Chicago, and offers an innovative historical explanation for how this social ill developed in nineteenth and twentieth century America. Drawing from Michel Foucault’s concept of power/knowledge and from theories of racial formation, Washington also demonstrates how the process through which some European immigrant groups were reclassified from non-white to white over time, allowed them to move out of spaces where they faced environmental injustice into spaces of environmental privilege. This argument represents a significant contribution to environmental justice studies and suggests a comparative and relational ethnic studies approach to future treatments of the subject. Packing Them In is a path breaking book and a welcome addition to the fields of environmental history and environmental justice studies.-David Naguib Pellow, Dehlsen Professor of Environmental Studies, University of California Santa Barbara and author of Garbage Wars: The Struggle for Environmental Justice in Chicago A pathbreaking book. Sylvia Hood Washington uses Chicago as a case study of how human health inequalities in urban environments change over time. In showing the ways white identity shaped exposure to environmental pollutants in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, she provides historical context to the environmental racism identified in the Unite...

Environmental tragedies such as Chernobyl and the Exxon Valdez remind us that catastrophic accidents are always possible in a world full of hazardous technologies. Yet, the apparently excellent safety record with nuclear weapons has led scholars, policy-makers, and the public alike to believe that nuclear arsenals can serve as a secure deterrent for the foreseeable future. In this provocative book, Scott Sagan challenges such optimism. Sagan's research into formerly classified archives penetrates the veil of safety that has surrounded U.S. nuclear weapons and reveals a hidden history of frightening "close calls" to disaster.
