This book "Eco-friendly Management of Alternaria Blight Disease of Mustard" is the outcome of fourteen years research experience in Plant Pathology. This book has been written for the eco-friendly management of most destructive alternaria blight disease of mustard. These eco-friendly non-conventional chemicals provide nutrients to the host plant which affect the relationship between crop and pathogen in many ways. By applying the chemicals, host plant induces resistance to the pathogens by induction of host resistance, such as salicylic acid or methyl jasmonate. Efforts have been made to manage the disease by using appropriate doses of such host resistance inducer chemicals. Manipulation of crop nutrition gives the farmer a valuable tool for managing crop health as well as reduced public pressure over pesticide residue in food and in the environment.

Banana crown rot is one of most important postharvest diseases of banana that reduces the quality and postharvest life of the fruit. It affects export of fruits in all banana producing countries including Ethiopia. There is no adequate information in Ethiopia about the importance of banana crown rot, pathogens that cause the disease and suitable methods for its management. The objectives of this study were to assess intensity of banana crown rot, to isolate and identify fungal complex associated with banana crown rot, and to evaluate the integrated effect of inorganic salt, hot water and fungicide treatments as management options of this disease. Inorganic salt at two levels integrated with three levels of water temperature and fungicide at four levels were evaluated towards the management of crown rot. The experiment was laid out in CRD with factorial combination. There was a highly significant (P<0.0001) effect on pH, TSS, TA, firmness and color of banana fruits due to combined application of treatments. In conclusion, the study revealed high occurrence and distribution of diverse fungi associated with postharvest banana crown rot.

The facts about Lyme disease, from epidemiology to treatment to control Lyme borreliosis, popularly known as Lyme disease, remains the most commonly reported tick-transmitted infection in North America and Europe. A growing body of scientific and clinical evidence has facilitated early diagnosis and effective treatment. Nonetheless, there are a number of misconceptions about this infectious disease that have given rise to unproven, potentially dangerous alternative therapies. In Lyme Borreliosis in Europe and North America, a team of authors whose expertise spans basic research, epidemiology, and clinical practice has compiled evidence-based information on Lyme borreliosis. Presents all the latest evidence needed to diagnose, treat, and prevent Lyme disease Lyme Borreliosis in Europe and North America begins with a review of the disease's epidemiology, the causative Borrelia genospecies, and tick vectors. It then explores pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment. Next, the book examines the role of serologic, culture, and molecular diagnostic methods. The book also features a chapter on prognosis, offering an evidence-based review of outcome studies, as well as practical advice to physicians to help them manage the challenging clinical scenario of chronic symptoms attributed to Borrelia infection. The final chapter is a guide to prevention strategies, including the management of tick bites. Examines similarities and differences in Europe and North America Because differences in Borrelia genospecies are responsible for differences in the clinical presentation of Lyme borreliosis between North America and Europe, this book provides descriptions of the disease as it presents on each continent. Most of the chapters have been cowritten by experts on each continent, in order to provide a balanced perspective that combines European and North American findings, practices, and experiences. A major shift is taking place across the globe in the burden of CVD; this ‘transition’ includes the emergence of Stroke, Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) and Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) in developing economies. In India, rapid economic growth and urbanisation coupled with increased life expectancy has greatly expanded the population at risk of mortality and morbidity from chronic diseases, including CVD. The rise of CVD in India underscores the imperative need to develop appropriate and effective prevention policies and programmes. However, informed policies and programmes require sound data on the epidemiology of the disease burden, which is currently inadequate. Not surprisingly, these data are often met with skepticism. This literature review aimed to study the epidemiology and the epidemiological transition of CVD in India. A comprehensive review of published and unpublished studies on Stroke,CHD and PAD was conducted and findings related to incidence, prevalence, mortality, modifiable risk factors and the epidemiological transition are described. This information will be especially useful to policy makers, development agencies, non-government organizations, academia and researchers.

Tobacco is a high value cash crop, gives income a billion dollars annually to world farmers. Major constrain in tobacco production is regular occurrence of diseases that cause <18% yield loss. This study demonstrated that Inoculation of root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita and root-rot fungus, P. aphanidermatum caused characteristic root galls and root decay on tobacco cultivars tested except cv. RK-12 P3 and reduced biomass 15-30% production. In concomitantly inoculated plants the disease severity increased considerably and cv. RK-12 P3 also developed symptoms. Assay of biochemical characters, total phenol and salicylic acid have shown their higher concentration in cultivar resistant to the pathogen followed by moderately resistant and susceptible cultivars. Soil application of Pseudomonas fluorescens or Phorate proved highly effective against root-knot nematodes, while, Bavistin and Trichoderma harzianum have greater effectiveness against root-rot fungus. The root-rot disease complex can be controlled by application of P. fluorescens. Among the five tobacco cultivars, cv. RK-12 P3 has a considerable degree of tolerance against both pathogen and can be exploited commercially.

Study shows that stem rot of coffee at the University of Southern Mindanao is caused by Sclerotium rolfsii. Pathogenicity test revealed that the fungus was pathogenic to stem cutting of coffee. First noticeable symptom of infection was girdling at the base of the stem where it was in contact with the soil which eventually encircled the plant stem at 5 days after inoculation. Application of Organic Based Control Agents (OBCAs) either as protectants or eradicants reduced percentage severity infection and controlled stem rot of coffee. These OBCAs are potential alternatives to manage stem rot of coffee, and can be used as substitute to synthetic pesticides. These are organic-based hence, safe and environment-friendly.

As improvements in living conditions and advances in modern medicine lead to increased life expectancy and the number of older adults world-wide continues to grow, so the number of older individuals with cardiac and cerebrovascular disease is rising. Over eighty per cent of all cardiovascular disease-related deaths now occur in patients aged sixty five or older. The high prevalence of co-morbidities, frailty and cognitive decline amongst older patients requires that a holistic approach to the management of cardiovascular disease is required. Written and edited by leading experts in the field, ‘Cardiovascular diseases and health in the older patient’ provides scholarly evidence and data which explain why treating an older patient with cardiovascular disease is often different from treating a young or middle-aged patient with the same disease. The chapters have been updated and expanded from the cardiovascular section of the renowned ‘Pathy’s Principles and Practice of Geriatric Medicine’, edited by Alan J. Sinclair, John E. Morley and Bruno Vellas. The revised chapters contain updated evidence and references to recent clinical practice guidelines in Europe and North America, this book provides complete, authoritative information on this major cause of death, poor health and disability in old age. Covering the epidemiology, pathophysiology and management of cardiovascular disease in the older patient, the book is an excellent reference at all clinical and pre-clinical levels and will appeal particularly to geriatricians, cardiologists, and GPs, as well as cardiac specialist nurses and practice nurses. With a Foreword by Stuart M. Cobbe.

The word caries is derived from latin, meaning ‘rot’ or decay . It is similar to the Greek word ker meaning death. Dental caries is defined as an infectious microbiologic disease of the teeth that results in localized dissolution and destruction of calcified tissue. There is presently alarming rate of increase in the prevalence of dental caries in developing countries. Dental caries is a multi factorial disease in which there is an interaction between three principal factors, a. A susceptible Host tissue (b) Micro flora with a cariogenic potential (c) A suitable local substrate. In addition a, fourth factor time, must be consider. All the factor must be present and must interact with each other for dental caries develop. A variety of microbial factors have been associated with dental caries activity. News headlines are forever reporting diseases that take huge tolls on humans, wildlife, domestic animals, and both cultivated and native plants worldwide. These diseases can also completely transform the ecosystems that feed us and provide us with other critical benefits, from flood control to water purification. And yet diseases sometimes serve to maintain the structure and function of the ecosystems on which humans depend. Gathering thirteen essays by forty leading experts who convened at the Cary Conference at the Institute of Ecosystem Studies in 2005, this book develops an integrated framework for understanding where these diseases come from, what ecological factors influence their impacts, and how they in turn influence ecosystem dynamics. It marks the first comprehensive and in-depth exploration of the rich and complex linkages between ecology and disease, and provides conceptual underpinnings to understand and ameliorate epidemics. It also sheds light on the roles that diseases play in ecosystems, bringing vital new insights to landscape management issues in particular. While the ecological context is a key piece of the puzzle, effective control and understanding of diseases requires the interaction of professionals in medicine, epidemiology, veterinary medicine, forestry, agriculture, and ecology. The essential resource on the subject, Infectious Disease Ecology seeks to bridge these fields with an ecological approach that focuses on systems thinking and complex inte...

Infectious disease surveillance has evolved at an extraordinary pace during the past several decades, and continues to do so. It is increasingly used to inform public health practice in addition to its use as a tool for early detection of epidemics. It is therefore crucial that students of public health and epidemiology have a sound understanding of the concepts and principles that underpin modern surveillance of infectious disease. Written by leaders in the field, who have vast hands-on experience in conducting surveillance and teaching applied public health, Concepts and Methods in Infectious Disease Surveillance is comprised of four sections. The first section provides an overview, a description of systems used by public health jurisdictions in the United States and legal considerations for surveillance. The second section presents chapters on major program-area or disease-specific surveillance systems, including those that monitor bacterial infections, foodborne diseases, healthcare-associated infections, and HIV/AIDS. The following section is devoted to methods for conducting surveillance and also approaches for data analysis. A concluding section summarizes communication of surveillance findings, including the use of traditional and social media, in addition to showcasing lessons learned from the New York City Department of Health’s experience in surveillance and epidemiology training. This comprehensive new book covers major topics at an introductory to intermediate level, and will be an excellent resource for instructors. Suitable for use in graduate level courses in public health, human and veterinary medicine, and in undergraduate programs in public-health-oriented disciplines, Concepts and Methods in Infectious Disease Surveillance is also a useful primer for frontline public health practitioners, hospital epidemiologists, infection control practitioners, laboratorians in public health settings, infectious disease researchers, and medical and public health informaticians interested in a concise overview of infectious disease surveillance.

One of the fundamental questions of mathematical epidemiology is to find threshold conditions that determine whether an infectious disease will spread in a susceptible population when the disease is introduced into the population. The threshold conditions are characterized by the so-called reproductive number, the reproduction number, the reproductive ratio, basic reproductive value, basic reproductive rate, or contact number. This book present the deterministic and stochastic epidemic models for HIV and study of reproductive numbers. The homotopy perturbation method and homotopy analysis method which was used to solve the linear and nonlinear differential equations. Foot and mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral disease which has a significant impact on the economy and livestock productivity of affected countries. This studies involved investigation of the epidemiology of FMD in a potentially free (Tanintharyi) and an endemic (Sagaing) region of Myanmar. The animal level sero-prevalence in the Sagaing was high (42%, 95% CI 37.7 - 47.1) in contrast to that in Tanintharyi Division (11.7%, 5.9 - 17.4). The traditional Dutaik meeting approach which is conducted in rural area of Myanmar, was developed as a participatory disease tool and was validated with data collected from serological surveys and questionnaire interviews to use for detecting FMD with the significant advantages of time and cost effectiveness. A partial budgeting model with Monte Carlo simulation was also developed to understand the influence of FMD on the economics of animal draught power, which is the major livestock input into the nation's agricultural enterprise. The animal movement study was done at two studied area and these movement data support the decision to develop a potential free zone area for FMD without vaccination in the Tanintharyi Division.
