Bachelor Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Computer Science - Internet, New Technologies, grade: 1,7, University of Hannover (Knowledge Based Systems Institute), language: English, abstract: Social Web applications are steadily gaining popularity. At the same time, the open nature of such services leads to the exposure of an immense amount of personal data.Due to insucient access control on nowadays Social Web applications problems in terms of privacy arise. This thesis focuses on the need for more exible and negrained privacy restrictions. It analyses privacy problems of current Social Web applications and compares the privacy preferences such applications over. Based on this analysis, this thesis extends the well-known principle of policy-based accesscontrol, which is a exible and dynamic way to dene who can get access to what content based on user preferences. The presented extension accommodates policies to the requirements of the Social Web. In particular, it describes how to exploit Social Semantic Web data for privacy reasoning. This includes the retrieval of Socialand Semantic Web data from various information sources on the Web. It further includes its usage for the denition of privacy policies and its consideration during the policy evaluation. Consequently, using Social Semantic Web data for policy reasoning allows users to exactly dene which social relationships and properties a requester has to have in order to access a particular resource. Michael Hausenblas Building Scalable and Smart Multimedia Applications on the Semantic Web

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2009 in the subject Information Management, grade: 1,0, University of Graz, language: English, abstract: The Semantic Web has become reality over the past couple of years. While certain practical topics-such as interoperability, etc.-have at least partially been addressed, scalability and expressivity issues regarding the utilisation of multimedia metadata on the Semantic Web are still widely neglected. However, existing Web (2.0) applications handling millions of multimedia assets are starting to take advantage of Semantic Web technologies. This work contributes to design decisions regarding scalable and smart multimedia applications on the Semantic Web. Based on an analysis of practical issues-stemming from diverse projects and activities the author has participated in over the past four years-three areas have been identified, namely (i) performance and scalability issues on the data access level, (ii) the effective and efficient representation of multimedia content descriptions, and (iii) the deployment of multimedia metadata on the Semantic Web. The three research areas have as its common base the trade-off between expressivity and scalability. We present our findings regarding scalable, yet expressive Semantic Web multimedia applications in a number of practical settings and discuss future directions, such as interlinking multimedia.

Research Paper from the year 2010 in the subject Computer Science - Internet, New Technologies, grade: 1.7, University of Applied Sciences Berlin, language: English, abstract: Since Apple released the iPhone in 2007 the conversion into a mobile web has accelerated strongly. This paper discusses the challenges resulting from that shift. The diversity of platforms and device specifications put a heavy burden on developers. While each platform offers an own proprietary API for developing applications it is often desirable to develop applications platform independently. One possible way today is to use web technologies. Although this offers a platform independent API many commonly used system APIs are not accessible. For most applications this is not acceptable since the use of sensors and file I/O is a premise to build modern user experiences. But now another interesting part of mobile development begins to merge into the sphere of web technology. This is the use of widgets. Widgets were originally designed for desktop use as small single purpose applications but were quickly adapted on the web. Those applications are written using web standards like HTML, CSS and JavaScript. The widgets we see on the web today can only use the limited JavaScript APIs that is provided by the browsers. Also the W3Cs current widget specification fails to deliver on device APIs, where only packaging and a widgets configuration is specified. That is why new specifications are about to be made and stand...

Maryam Ramezani Using Data Mining for Facilitating User Contributions in the Social Semantic Web

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2011 in the subject Computer Science - Internet, New Technologies, grade: 1,0, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), language: English, abstract: Social Web applications have emerged as powerful applications for Internet users allowing them to freely contribute to the Web content, organize and share information, and utilize the collective knowledge of others for discovering new topics, resources and newfriends. While social Web applications such as social tagging systems have many benefits, they also present several challenges due to their open and adaptive nature. The amount of user generated data can be extremely large and since there is not any controlled vocabulary or hierarchy, it can be very difficult for users to find the information that is of their interest. In addition, attackers may attempt to distort the system's adaptive behavior by inserting erroneous or misleading annotations, thus altering the way in which information is presented to legitimate users. This thesis utilizes data mining and machine learning techniques to address these problems. In particular, we design and develop recommender systems to aid the user in contributing to the Social Semantic Web. In addition, we study intelligent techniques tocombat attacks against social tagging systems. In our work, we first propose a framework that maps domain properties to recommendation technologies. This framework provides a systematic approach to find the appr...

Sabrina Sturm Web 2.0 and the Health Care Market. Health Care in the era of Social Media and the modern Internet

The present piece of research deals with the use of Web 2.0 applications within the health care market. When reviewing literature it became evident that up to now, research which has been conducted in this field is rather limited to single aspects of the topic. Comprehensive research investigating the topic as a whole could not be properly identified. Within this study, first of all, Web 2.0 is introduced in general, including a definition, its principles, as well as major supportive technologies and common applications, for example blogs, communities, virtual worlds and podcasts are outlined in detail. Since Web 2.0 is a rather young phenomenon, experts have not yet agreed on a common definition and scope. Therefore this part is intended to provide a basis for common understanding about Web 2.0. The second part is dedicated to the health care market itself. Here, a definition and classification of the market is provided. In this context it has been specified what has been included into its scope for the purpose of this study. Moreover, it is given an overview of current trends, the status quo, as well as an outlook to future development with respect to influencing factors like demographic changes, medical-technological progress, as well as political interventions. It is important to consider the structure and future development of the health care market in order to properly assess the value of Web 2.0 for this market. Afterwards, Web 2.0 is introduced to the health care mark...

Mueen Uddin Integration of Web Services . Mobile Agents in Distributed Systems

Web services are widely used in current web based business applications, and form basis for emerging frameworks in all types of computing platforms. Current mobile agent systems implement similar mechanisms for service description, invocation and discovery. The research technique proposed in this book provides with a solution to open up the usage of mobile agent systems via the bridge of emerging Web Services (WS) standard technology to achieve interoperability. We have developed integration architecture, called "Web Service Mobile Integration" (WSMI), with twofold goal of exporting mobile agent functions with a web service interface and of simplifying access to legacy web service components from any mobile agent system. This promotes the uniform access to different mobile agent system functions, independently of the specific mobile agent implementation. We have thoroughly evaluated the Web Service Mobile Integration prototype performance, by comparing its functions with similar non-web service based facilities.

Henok Getachew Security Threats to the Ethiopian State in the Post-1991 Years

The Ethiopian state has often faced both internal and external dimensions of security threats since its formation as a 'modern' state. Various policies and strategies were designed by the successive regimes to alleviate the alleged sources of insecurity. These couldn't stave off the continuing crisis of the legitimacy of the state and/or the regimes. Although state and society were reorganized on ethno-linguistic lines to avert the alleged sources of insecurity, the suffering of both the state and the incumbent regime from a sense of insecurity has continued unabated in the post-1991 years. The work reveals that the Ethiopian state has continued to face both internal and external dimensions of security threats. This is mainly due to weak socio-political integration, democratic deficiencies and paucity of consensus on the state-building project. The book provides an insight for readers, researchers and scientific community who have keen interest on the multi-dimensional political developments in Ethiopia. It also helps to further inquiry in the area of security studies as well as the formulation of appropriate policy that would likely to address the current state crisis.

Emmanuel Chilanga, Liam Riley, Juliana Ngwira Food Insecurity in Informal Settlements in Lilongwe Malawi

Although there is widespread food availability in urban areas across the Global South, it is not correlated with universal access to adequate amounts of nutritious foods. This report is based on a household survey conducted in 2015 in six low-income informal areas in Malawi’s capital city, where three-quarters of the population live in informal settlements. Understanding the dimensions of household food insecurity in these neighbourhoods is critical to sustainable and inclusive growth in Lilongwe. The survey findings provide a complementary perspective to the 2008 AFSUN survey conducted in Blantyre, which suggested a level of food security in urban Malawi that was probably more typical of peri-urban areas where many people farm. Given that informal settlements house most of Malawi’s urban residents, the Lilongwe research presents a serious public policy challenge for the country’s leaders. Poverty is a profound problem in Malawi’s rapidly expanding cities. Of particular concern is the poor quality of diets among residents of informal settlements. Precarity of income, reflected in the survey findings of frequent purchasing of staple foods and the need for food sellers to extend credit, appears to be a key driver of food insecurity in these communities. Economically inclusive growth, with better prospects for stable employment and protection for informal-sector workers, appears to be the surest route to improved urban food security in Malawi.

Bikombo Bunana Gaby Understanding Household Food Insecurity of Street Traders in Durban

Food insecurity in South Africa is not due to a shortage of food in the country but to inadequate access to food by poor individuals and households. Many people, who lost their jobs or can't find suitable jobs for various reasons, revert to street trading amongst others as a survival strategy. There is limited information on understanding the food security status and strategies used by street traders and their households in Durban. This study aimed at understanding the extent of food insecurity among street traders in Durban. The research was conducted with a sample of 120 people. Its findings confirmed that the income generated was R2000 per month at most, which in turn was to be shared with an average of 4 members of their respective households. Consequently, the majority of street traders' households were food insecure. Limited income compromised the quality of their food dominated by energy dense food; hence 59.2% suffered from lifestyle diseases. The study recommended more studies in this field, the extension of the Isipingo census to the entire municipality and the decriminalization of street trading by the municipality in order to improve their food security situation.
