Thimmappa Nagaveni Resistance Factors for Leaf Blight of Barley

Not much work has been done so far on leaf blight disease of barley with respect to molecular and biochemical aspects related to resistance. Hence, an attempt was made for a systematic study of the various resistance factors (molecular and biochemical) which attribute to the resistance of the barley genotypes, which would help us to know the nature of resistance present in different genotypes and to evolve a suitable resistant genotypes against this disease. Keeping this in view, the present investigation was under taken with the following objectives: 1. Biochemical factors imparting resistance. 2. Role of isozymes in resistance. 3. DNA finger printing of leaf blight resistant and susceptible genotypes.

Mhembere Oliver Genetic Studies of Phaeosphaeria Leaf Spot Resistance in Maize

Genetic studies and technological edge on maize are increasingly advancing since the turn of the decade. This has come as a result of the increasing threat of pests and diseases in maize producing regions of the world. This book provides a new metric to the fungal disease, Phaeosphaeria leaf spot that has seen increased incidence and severity of epidemics in these growing areas. The author explores the inheritance of the disease and the combining ability of other secondary traits like early maturity in germplasm adaptable to Southern Africa. Thus the book confirms that phaeosphaeria leaf is a highly heritable disease combined with additive gene action and earliness is a moderately heritable trait. Hence, scientists, maize breeding houses and students will be able to fix resistance in their line breeding programs using novel methodologies and technologies that include marker assisted selection and recurrent selection, to generate resistant commercial hybrids. Finally, the general and specific combining abilities of phaeosphaeria leaf spot and other secondary maize traits are further discussed.

Bacterial Leaf Blight caused by the bacterial pathogen Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) limits rice yield in all major rice growing regions of the world, especially in irrigated lowland and rainfed conditions where predisposition factors favour disease development to epidemic proportions. Since bacterial pathogens are difficult to manage, development of host plant resistance is the most effective means of disease management. To combat the problem of resistance breakdown, pyramiding of resistance genes into different cultivars is being carried out. The present book deals with the gene specific marker for detection of BLB resistance genes in rice genotypes.

Growth, development and yield of soybean are a result of a variety's genetic potential interacting with environment and farming practices. Experiments were carried out in two locations for determining the resistance of some soybean genotypes to the cotton leaf worm. Beside that, identification of molecular genetic markers linked to insect resistance was also done. An attempt was done to get some new resistant hybrids through execution hybridization between these cultivars. Plant height, numbers of branches and pods per plant and seed yield per plant were decreased significantly by the infestation of cotton leaf worm (Spodoptera littoralis) as compared with soybean plants grown in Giza region (non - stressed treatment). The results of SDS-PAGE revealed a total number of 21 bands with molecular weight (MW) ranging form about 319.63 to 15.568 KDa. 5 primers showed specific ISSR markers for cotton leaf worm with 6 positive markers for cotton leaf worm resistance appeared in the resistant genotypes, while 2 negative markers for susceptibility for cotton leaf worm were present in the susceptible genotypes.

Bacterial Leaf Blight (BLB) of cotton is one of the most important diseases causing substantial losses to cotton crop in India. The disease is caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv malvacearum (Xam) which is a seed borne foliar pathogen of cotton. Several studies were conducted on the bacterial growth facilitators, varieties of cotton, efficacy of fungicides and antibiotics. Resistance for BLB was screened within 40 varieties, out of which 6 (Lohit, Shyamli, Acala 3080, LD 419, RG 8, CAD 4) were resistant and 10 were found to be moderately susceptible. Culture media studies were performed for the optimum growth of the pathogen, nutrient broth facilitated optimum growth of the bacterium followed by Muller Hinton agar. The efficacy of 12 fungicides was tested against the bacterium. Thiram, Mercuric chloride, Carbendazin with Mancozeb, Bavistin, Captan and Formaldehyde were found effective against Xam. Testing for efficacy of antibiotics implied that streptomycin and chloramphenicol gave optimum results.

The impetus for this volume lives in a rich and vibrant past. It is organized to honor one of thefounders and most prolific contributors to the professional and transdiscipline of evaluation --Professor Michael Scriven, and to illuminate the future of evaluation in society. Professor Scrivenoften shares stories of his meetings with Albert Einsten and the frame-breaking evaluation revolutionhe has led against the value free doctrine of the social sciences. Both his wide eyed graduatestudents and the more grizzled evaluation veterans in his professional development workshopsquickly learn that Scriven is well traveled and has exchanged some of the boldest ideas and visions with the most brilliant thinkers ofhis time. Scriven insisted that the 2011 Stauffer Symposium and this volume be organized in that genre. He urged us to invite the mostthoughtful and influential evaluation theorists and practitioners we could find to join him in a conversation about the future of evaluationin society.Scriven challenges us to examine the five great paradigm shifts that have revolutionized the foundations of evaluation, and that hebelieves will form the basis for a much brighter future for evaluation in society. Scriven's revolutionary ideas are followed and challengedby a group of thought leaders in evaluation who do not necessarily shared his views on evaluation, but who have earned hisdeepest respect and whose evaluation work he admires including Michael Quinn Patton, Ernest House, Danie...

Primary data were collected using interview guides. A total of 240 respondents were selected using stratified random sampling technique in 6 rural and 6 urban markets in Ogun State. Weekly retail prices of yellow and white maize for five years (January 1999-December 2003) were analysed using the Bivariate Cointegration test and the Granger causality test to detect the presence and level of price integration. In Ogun State, domestic production of maize increased by 9 percent a year between 1990 - 2001. Although the growth in maize production may be attributed to cultivating more crop area and/or the adoption of improved open pollinated and hybrid maize varieties which provide the major stimulus for increased yield on the average. Annual growth rate of maize yields was 9.08 percent during 1990 - 2001. Most of the growth came from yellow maize, which increased at 8.92 percent annually, compared with 3.57 percent for white maize. Maize is one of the most important cereal crops in the World's agricultural economy both as food for humans and feed for animals and poultry. Maize is known as "Queen of Cereals" due to its higher yield potential compared to other cereals. In India it is the third most important food crop after rice and wheat. The demand for maize is increasing day by day in India, owing to the increased demand for poultry and cattle feed and for the same reason it is also emerging as an important cereal crop in India. In crop plants, the physiological basis of dry matter production is dependent on the source-sink concept, where the source is the potential capacity for photosynthesis and the sink is the potential capacity to utilize the photosynthetic products. Hence, for improving attainable crop yields the knowledge of yield forming physiological processes such as source-sink relationships is required. Many studies have been conducted on source-sink relationship in different crops including maize to understand this phenomenon towards maneuvering such crops. Since, maize being the sink limiting crop, it is important to study the source-sink relationship to improve the sink capacity and maize yield

In okra, a number of varieties have been developed which possess resistance to Yellow Vein Mosaic Virus (YVMV). Little attention has been given to breed varieties resistant to shoot and fruit borer, which is one of the serious insect- pests and causes 41.60 per cent losses in different parts of India. However, according to earlier workers, Earias species infestation may reach as high as 60.68 per cent. Further, control strategies for this pest are exclusively based on the chemicals that are harmful in view of frequent harvesting of fruits (2-3 times a week). The injudicious use of pesticides for controlling the pest also poses serious health problems by polluting the environment. Development of resistant/tolerant varieties/hybrids against the pest appears to be eco-friendly and the safest viable alternative. Therefore, ten highly/ fairly resistant and less susceptible genotypes found under natural infestation conditions were used as females in line x tester mating design. Among various genotypes EC-169513, EC-329424 and EC-7194 were identified as highly resistant against shoot and fruit borer and can further be utilized in resistant breeding programme after confirming the resistance

Maize is the main staple crop in East African mountains but its yield is affected by biotic and abiotic factors. Lepidopteran pests such as, Chilo partellus (Crambidae) and Busseola fusca (Noctuidae) reduced maize yield while soil elements increase the yield. In addition to enhancing maize yields, some soil element such as silicon (Si) aid plants in overcoming abiotic and biotic stresses. Hence, any factor that induces Si deficiency in soil might be detrimental to the plant growth and its resistance to insect pests and diseases. Understanding how the projected temperature increase will affect Si levels in soil and maize is crucial in promoting maize production in different agro-ecosystems in the face of climate change. This study evaluated the Si levels in both soil and maize plants cultivated along three altitudinal gradients of East African mountains (Machakos, Taita and Kilimanjaro) characterized by graded changes in climatic conditions. The study also linked the Si level in maize plants to lepidopteran pests' distribution.

How do people evaluate in daily life? This issue broaches this topic to better understand this dimension of being human, to develop evaluation theory, and to improve extraprofessional and professional evaluation practice. As part of a larger study addressing these issues in the lives of many professional evaluators around the world, case studies of seven early evaluation theorists and practitioners from North America were conducted. This issue contains articles with stories of some of their evaluation life experiences told and interpreted by these individuals, with commentary by an eighth evaluator. Themes that cross the cases are proposed, and responses by the individuals highlighted are shared in a final article. This is the 150th issue in the New Directions for Evaluation series from Jossey-Bass. It is an official publication of the American Evaluation Association.

Thoroughly revised and updated, the third edition of bestselling The ABCs of Evaluation offers an introduction to program evaluation. This comprehensive textbook covers topics such as stakeholder relationships, program design, data collection and analysis, reporting results, and other important steps in the evaluation process. The ABCs of Evaluation shows how to select participants for the evaluation and how to deal with multiple goals and objectives—including those of the organization, the staff, and the client. The authors illustrate the circumstances under which each evaluation model can be used, and offer tips on identifying data sources and collecting the data. This revision includes substantially increased coverage of theory, methodological approaches, the business of evaluation, the evaluator's role and responsibilities, RFPs and the grants process, logic models, data analysis, and writing the evaluation report. Also included are new cases and scenarios from various evaluation realms in social sciences, education, health, and human services. Throughout the book, charts, graphs, models, and lists help organize, extend, and facilitate the understanding of each evaluation concept. This issue focuses on connections between performance management and evaluation, a contentious topic at the moment. It does so by placing evaluation and monitoring under the overarching concept of performance management, and then by investigating five complementarities between performance monitoring and measurement on the one hand, and evaluation on the other. These complementarities are: Sequential Informational Organizational Methodical Hierarchical. Several case studies discuss the uses and complementarities of evaluation and performance management in contexts including national and local governments and the work of government, philanthropic foundations, and a direct-service nonprofit agency. These cases illustrate the advantages and pitfalls in utilizing evaluative approaches within the context of performance management. This is the 137th volume of the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Evaluation, an official publication of the American Evaluation Association.

Participatory Evaluation Up Close. An Integration of Research-Based Knowledge

Empiricism provides the backbone of knowledge creation within social science disciplines (e.g., psychology, sociology) and applied domains of study (e.g., education, administration) alike. Yet, relative to such domainsof inquiry, comparatively little empirical research on evaluation has occurred, and the research knowledge basebeen infrequently synthesized and integrated to influence theory and practice. The proposed book aims to fillthis void with regard to participatory evaluation, a set of collaborative approaches to evaluation that isreceiving considerable attention of late, including a growing body of empirical studies. The authors begin in Part 1 with the delineation of a widely known and familiar conceptual framework forparticipatory evaluation. They then use the framework in Part 2 as a guide to conducting an extensive review of the extant empirical knowledge base inparticipatory evaluation, culminating in a thematic analysis of what we know about the approach. In Part 3 the authors focus on methodologicalconsiderations of doing research on participatory evaluation through a critique of existing studies and an explication of design choices drawn fromtheir own research program. The book concludes in Part 4 with implications for moving the field forward in terms of important research questions, methodological direction and evaluation practice. This book will be of central interest to evaluation theorists and to those who choose to conduct research on evaluation; appeal will...

Considering the full collection of RoE studies, it defines RoE as systematic empirical inquiry resulting in original findings or in reexaminations of existing data about the practice, methods, or profession of program evaluation. RoE inquiries address: the inputs into evaluations, the contexts within which evaluations are conducted, the full range of methods and activities of evaluations, evaluation’s proximal or distal effects, or the professional issues that evaluators encounter. The inquiries include case studies, reflective narratives, studies about evaluation methods, literature reviews, oral histories, bibliometric studies, meta-evaluations, experiments, longitudinal studies, simulations, and time-series studies. As pedagogy is the study of teaching, pedagogy of evaluation examines how and what evaluation teaches. This volume is inspired by the works of Paulo Freire who believed that all interactions between people are pedagogical: something is always being taught, conveyed, and proselytized (the same could be said of evaluation). Freirean principles, though articulated nearly 50 years ago, offer and affirm future directions for dealing with inequality, poverty, social injustice, community development, education, and, to the point here, evaluation. The principles remain fresh and timely, and new. Divided into three parts, the editors invite you to use Freire?s works to reflect on your pedagogy of evaluation. Contemporaries of Paulo Freire present his pedagogy Pedagogical principles of evaluation derived from Freire Freire?s current evaluation influence illustrated This is the 155th issue in the New Directions for Evaluation series from Jossey-Bass. Sridhar Jai Study on Adoption and Marketing Behavior of Maize Growers

Maize (Zea mays L.) is one of the most important cereals next to rice and wheat, in the world as well in India. It is one of the most versatile crops and can be grown in diverse environmental conditions and has diversified uses in human food and animal feed. It has got immense potential and is therefore called as "miracle crop" and also "queen of cereals". The crop occupies third place among the cereals and it is cultivated over an area of 7.59 million ha with a production of 14.71 million tonnes and the average productivity is 1938 kg /ha.In Tamil Nadu, it occupies an area of 0.20 million hectares with a production of 0.24 million tonnes and an average productivity of 1189 kg/ ha. maize growers face specific problems in marketing because the feed industries procure maize through private agencies like village merchants, middlemen problem etc. In order to help the maize growers to overcome the constraints social studies are required ultimately. In this regard the present study is contemplated.

Rapeseed-Mustard is an important oilseed crop of India. The full potential of this crop is far from being exploited due to several abiotic and biotic stresses. The crop suffers from many fungal diseases and some of these diseases are seed-borne like Alternaria leaf blight, charcoal rot, downy mildew and head rot. Among these, Alternaria leaf blight caused by Alternaria brassiceae. Tubaki and Nishihara have been considered as a potentially destructive disease in many Brassica growing countries.Seed being a biological entity, is very often subjected to deterioration in storage due to microorganisms. Seed storage is an important parameter which is very much essential to realize the gains from the pains taken to produce seeds. Seed borne diseases cause enormous losses to our crop. The infected seeds may fail to germinate, transmit disease from seed to seedling and from seedling to growing plants

Attaining food security both at household and national level is the primary objective of all developing countries. Growing of consumer accepted high yielding crops is one of the solutions for those segments of the society that depend on agriculture for their livelihoods. To this end, maize is potentially the most productive cereal crop that prospects the industrialization of tropical countries. The use of high population densities for early maturing maize varieties under irrigated condition has recorded grain yields of up to 8.5 tons/ha which is much higher than that of the yield that is being obtained in the subsistence rain fed agriculture that is not more than 1.5 to 2 tons/ha. Thus, this technology would shed light to small farm households, commercial farmers, and agricultural extension workers who are interested to engage in irrigated agriculture using different water sources.
