Akatukunda Joel Kakuru The Cyber revolution and copyright infringement in Uganda

Uganda has embraced the cyber revolution which has become essential in the jurisprudence of Uganda in two major ways, the first being the fact that it has enhanced the development of copyrights and the second being that it has worsened copyright infringement in Uganda. Due to the fact that the cyber technology and the internet are new phenomena in Uganda, it has over time become hard to curb the culprits of copyright infringements over the cyber space. This research presents the practical aspect of dealing with copyright infringements over the internet and other related computer technologies in Uganda.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Medicine - Public Health, grade: 75.0, Makerere University, course: Biomedical Laboratory Technology, language: English, abstract: Herbal medicine use in Uganda and the world at large is at its peak because of the documented efficacy, effectiveness, cheap cost and less side effects. The estimates of herbal medicine users in the world is 80% and 60% in Uganda, yet with all this demand, less effort has been put to ensure that they are free from bacterial contamination. The study therefore aimed at determining Staphylococcus aureus contamination of selected liquid herbal medicines sold in Kampala, Uganda with the following specific objectives; to provide an update on the different local herbal medicines sold in Kampala, Uganda and the conditions they treat; to determine Staphylococcus aureus contamination levels of selected liquid local herbal medicines sold in Kampala, Uganda; and to establish the antibacterial susceptibility patterns of isolated Staphylococcus aureus. A questionnaire was used to collect data on the different local herbal medicines sold in Kampala, Uganda. To determine levels of Staphylococcus aureus contamination, microbial culture was performed on 30 selected liquid herbal medicine samples. In addition Staphylococcus aureus susceptibility patterns were determined by subjecting isolated Staphylococcus aureus species to gentamicin 10μg, chloramphenicol 30 30μg ampicillin 10μg, penicillin 10U and tetracycline 30μ...

Thorsten Felden Cyberevolution - William Gibson.s evolutionary Ideas

Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Cologne, course: Between Chance and Adaptation. Reverberations of the Theory of Evolution in Ethnology, Literature and History, 19 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Classic evolutionary theory always looks backwards. Darwin, his predecessors and successors put forward their theories by comparing present organic records with those of the past. Indeed some ideas of social evolution are imbued with a certain kind of perspective into the future, believing in an ongoing progression of human societies. Still, in order to prove the accuracy of those ideas, one had to rely on evidence taken from history or from cultures which were believed to be primitive and thus representing former states of societies. Science fiction's view goes quite in the opposite direction: Here, the present marks the point of view from where we look into the future of society, the future of mankind. The following paper examines the notions of evolution we can find in William Gibson's work. I will try to deal with the question how we can perceive an evolution of the human race in his novels and what other ideas of evolution Gibson incorporates into his work. Starting off with the query whether there is to find any sort of biological evolution in Gibson's work, the second chapter will deal with the picture of nature Gibson draws. How does he describe nature (meaning organi...

Vasher Nathan Museveni.s Power and the Political Economy of Development in Uganda

This book develops a model of structural power in society that builds upon Weber's notion that several types of power exist in societies and that these types of power operate differently within societies. The purpose of this model is to help explain the political economy of development during Yoweri Museveni's presidential tenure in Uganda. The book argues that Museveni has centralized power through a complex system of patronage and repression. Furthermore, Museveni's transformation from the leader of a cadre of 'new breed leaders' to 'just another African big man' results from his choice to centralize power as a means of achieving his revolutionary goals. While this book explains how this centralization occurred it does not explain why. The final chapter investigates some theoretical frameworks to explain why it has occurred. The book concludes by noting that a combination of these frameworks and the model developed herein offer several avenues for possible further research.

Rhona M. Mijumbi Health Financing in Uganda

Uganda like many low income countries still struggles to provide health care for a significant proportion of the population despite enacting several policies and embarking on different economic reforms. A large number of people are facing catastrophic expenditures as they seek good and better health leading them into dire poverty. There is dis-proportionality between the country's burden of disease and the finances available to take care of it. Analyzing Uganda's health financing policies and system is a necessary initial step for improving its situation; it identifies the policy and practice gaps, which is necessary in making an optimum and relevant choice of reforms. This book initially contextualizes health financing in low income countries and then looks at the status of the health system in Uganda. These two chapters form a basis for the analysis of the health financing system of Uganda that follows thereafter. It concludes by drawing some lessons and recommendations for Uganda.

Ahmad Bashir Management Evolution and Application in our Environments

Over the past few years, there has been overwhelming trends of attaining formal management education, especially so in the developing countries. Consequently it gave rise to mushrooms of management institutes and universities all over the world. Despite this abundance of advance knowledge of management, the developing societies have not been able to manage their affairs proficiently in any field, may it be financial management, material means, human resource, agriculture, modern knowledge, organizational performance or misfortunes like poverty, natural disasters, accidents and fatal diseases etcetera. This book encompasses the highlights of disconnects between modern knowledge of management and its applications in the underdeveloped and developing societies. Till the time, people and knowledge are mutually connected for practices in real terms, management pursuits remain only theories, thus short of achieving the desired objectives. The societies, therefore, need to transform this knowledge of contemporary management into its application form especially for the middle and lower management. The readers from societies similar to those in Pakistan would find it rather more useful.

“This book is the most comprehensively global and critically sensitive synthesis of what we now know of the material and socio-cultural evolution of the so-called First Societies. Written by a distinguished architectural historian and theorist, this truly remarkable and indispensable study shows how the material culture of our forebears, from building to clothing, food, ritual and dance, was inextricably bound up with the mode of survival obtained in a particular place and time…It is a study that will surely become required reading for every student of material culture.”—Kenneth Frampton Starting with the dawn of human society, through early civilizations, to the pre-Columbian American tribes, Architecture of First Societies: A Global Perspective traces the different cultural formations that developed in various places throughout the world to form the built environment. Looking through the lens of both time and geography, the history of early architecture is brought to life with full-color photographs, maps, and drawings. Drawing on the latest research in archaeological and anthropological knowledge, this landmark book also looks at how indigenous societies build today in order to help inform the past.

Steven Hawkins The Mechanisms of Evolution. A Critique of the Neo-Darwinian Modern Synthesis

Do we understand how evolution works? In this book Steven Hawkins outlines various possible mechanisms of biological evolution - the Neo-Darwinian Modern Synthesis, Symbiogenesis and Developmental Systems Theory. He contrasts and compares these various theories and proposes a view of evolution in which all three mechanisms have a role to play. In this schema 'natural selection' only has a minor role to play in biological evolution. In the final chapter Hawkins considers non-biological evolution and is drawn to conclude that we are unable to understand the fundamental nature of both non-biological evolution and biological evolution.

Unfortunately hospitals in Uganda have for long neglected their use despite mounting pressure from medical workers seeking pay rise which has left most government hospitals understaffed. As a result, patients are not attended to on time and medical trainees who assist in most hospitals sometimes lack the desired skills and do not get adequate guidance from experienced health workers to enable them make more informed decisions. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the use of CIS in improving the quality of health care by providing clinical task support to medical workers. Data will be collected from mainly health workers working regional referral hospitals in Uganda whose populace is estimated to be 9000 and 383 will be sampled and given questionnaires. Depending on the outcome from the study, recommendations will be made on whether the government of Uganda should adopt clinical information systems in Uganda.

Peter Kropotkin Mutual Aid. A Factor of Evolution

2017 Reprint of 1919 Edition. “Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution” is a 1902 work by Russian anarchist philosopher Peter Kropotkin. Kropotkin explores the role of mutually-beneficial cooperation and reciprocity (or "mutual aid") in the animal kingdom and human societies both past and present. It is an argument against the competition-centered theories of so-called social Darwinism, as well as the romantic depictions of cooperation presented by writers such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who argued it was motivated by universal love rather than self-interest. “Mutual Aid” is considered a fundamental text in anarchist communism, presenting a scientific basis for communism alternative to the historical materialism of the Marxists. Many biologists also consider it an important catalyst in the scientific study of cooperation.

The establishment of durable, democratic institutions constitutes one of the major challenges of our age. As countless contemporary examples have shown, it requires far more than simply the holding of free elections. The consolidation of a legitimate constitutional order is difficult to achieve in any society, but it is especially problematic in societies with deep social cleavages. This book provides an authoritative and systematic analysis of the politics of so- called ‘deeply divided societies' in the post Cold War era. From Bosnia to South Africa, Northern Ireland to Iraq, it explains why such places are so prone to political violence, and demonstrates why – even in times of peace – the fear of violence continues to shape attitudes, entrenching divisions in societies that already lack consensus on their political institutions. Combining intellectual rigour and accessibility, it examines the challenge of establishing order and justice in such unstable environments, and critically assesses a range of political options available, from partition to power-sharing and various initiatives to promote integration. The Politics of Deeply Divided Societies is an ideal resource for students of comparative politics and related disciplines, as well as anyone with an interest in the dynamics of ethnic conflict and nationalism.

Newcastle disease virus continues to be a threat to the poultry industry worldwide. The disease has become more pronounced in resource constrained households that rely on backyard poultry system as a source of income and animal protein particularly in under developed countries including Uganda. This study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of Newcastle disease virus in apparently healthy birds, identify the Newcastle disease virus pathotypes and genotypes circulating in Uganda and to compare the regional distribution of these strains in live bird markets in Uganda. Six hundred fifty (each of cloacal and oropharyngeal swabs) samples were collected from live bird markets in all the regions of Uganda. The samples were processed and inoculated in 10-day old embryonated chicken eggs and incubated for 72 hours. Allantoic fluid was harvested and tested for the presence of Newcastle disease virus using hemagglutination and hemagglutination inhibition tests.

Markus End, Julija Sardelic When Stereotype Meets Prejudice. Antiziganism in European Societies.

Antiziganism is a widespread phenomenon in all European societies. Poor or rich, 'postcommunist' or 'traditional', North or South, with 'lean' or 'thick' welfare systems-all European societies demonstrate antiziganist prejudice. All across Europe Romanis are among the poorest, most destitute, and most excluded communities. Widespread prejudice and stereotypical representations of Romani individuals limit their chances for participation in democratic decision making processes and their access to services. Unable to counteract majority stereotypes systematically, more often than not they remain on the fringes of society. This edited volume asks where these stereotypes and prejudices come from, why they are ubiquitous to all societies, and how pertinent their impact on antiziganist attitudes found in European societies really is.

Evolution, Games, and God

According to the reigning competition-driven model of evolution, selfish behaviors that maximize an organism's reproductive potential offer a fitness advantage over self-sacrificing behaviors – rendering unselfish behavior for the sake of others a mystery that requires extra explanation. "Evolution, Games, and God" addresses this conundrum by exploring how cooperation, working alongside mutation and natural selection, plays a critical role in populations from microbes to human societies. Inheriting a tendency to cooperate, argue the contributors to this book, may be as beneficial as the self-preserving instincts usually thought to be decisive in evolutionary dynamics. Assembling experts in mathematical biology, history of science, psychology, philosophy, and theology, Martin Nowak and Sarah Coakley take an interdisciplinary approach to the terms "cooperation" and "altruism". Using game theory, the authors elucidate mechanisms by which cooperation – a form of working together in which one individual benefits at the cost of another – arises through natural selection. They then examine altruism – cooperation which includes the sometimes conscious choice to act sacrificially for the collective good – as a key concept in scientific attempts to explain the origins of morality. Discoveries in cooperation go beyond the spread of genes in a population to include the spread of cultural transformations such as languages, ethics, and religious systems of meaning. The authors resist the p...

Kato Peterson Kikomeko Realizing the Human Right to Adequate Food in slum Areas

The right to adequate food (RtF)is a human right of all people that emphasises freedom from hunger and malnutrition. It is internationally recognised by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Economic Social and Cultural rights; both of which Uganda has ratified. This book assesses the RtF situation of slum dwellers of Banda Parish (one of the slums of Kampala City,Uganda)and shows that whereas Uganda is bound by international obligations on the RtF,slum dwellers are yet to realize this right. This is occuring against the background that the RtF is "fairly" protected by objectives XIV and XXII under the social and economic objectives of the 1995 Constitution of the Republic of Uganda. The assessment is based on agreed upon RtF indicators as reported in the project "Measurement Developments in the Realization of the Right to Food by Means of Indicators: The IBSA - Procedure". This book is generally intended for policy makers, civil society organizations, UN agencies, other humanitarian agencies, academicians and all individuals involved in advocating for the human right to adequate food.

Jonas Kai J. Restoring Civil Societies. The Psychology of Intervention and Engagement Following Crisis

Breakdowns in civil societies can be catalyzed by factors ranging from war and genocide to natural disaster, disease and economic downturns. Restoring Civil Societies examines social processes related to civic engagement in the wake of these societal ruptures. The authors show how crises in civil society can be both pervasive and localized, broad-based and limited to defined social sub-groups. Whatever their scale, Restoring Civil Societies identifies models that analyze the social psychology of crises in order to devise ways of re-activating civic engagement and safeguarding civil society. Focusing on these positive interventions, the authors identify a number of key strategies, ranging from the simplicity and directness of bystander interventions to the volunteer armies mobilized in the wake of natural disasters. They include collective action organized to redress systemic inequalities, and the vital healing role played by truth commissions in Rwanda and elsewhere. Restoring Civil Societies fills the gap between basic research on social issues and translation into social policies and programs-an area which, in light of current economic and social unrest, is more important now than ever.

The objectives were to determine: the optimal combinations of legume cover crops or biomass transfer species and inorganic fertilizers for replenishing fertility; the acceptance levels and the farmer perceptions of 8 shrub- and tree species. Partial budgeting, linear programming analysis and descriptive statistics were used as analytical tools. 100% Mucuna pruriens incorporation and 0.9 t ha-1 Tithonia diversifolia incorporation with an inorganic nitrogen application at the rate of 30 kilograms hectare-1 were found to be the optimal soil management options on 0.045 and 0.872 hectares of land respectively, with investment costs of 495,120 Uganda Shillings. The major problematic aspects were technology accessibility and labour constraints. The strengthening of advisory services, government facilitated input delivery through private sector supply would play a critical role in soil fertility replenishment in Uganda.

There was no clear data that supported the impact of HIV/AIDS on livestock producing communities on labour, decision-making, grazing and watering time and factors that aggravated its effects. Data were collected using semi-structured questionnaire, focus group discussion, observation guides and review of secondary data. The study showed that there was reduction in the availability of labour for grazing and watering livestock in both Moyo and Kashumba; There was shift in decision-making and implementation from ailing household heads to selected household members. There was significant negative changes in livestock grazing and sale of livestock products in households affected by HIV/AIDS compared to those non affected. Furthermore, there was reduction in grazing and watering time for livestock activities. It was observed that daily animal source foods reduced in the affected households. The study recommended that HIV/AIDS mitigation measures be intergrated in the livestock sector plans that will create HIV/AIDS competent communities in Uganda.

Paul Shonebarger Respond to Evolution Theory

Evolution theory advocates have convinced our society that evolution is a scientific fact. However, no reasonable person disputes the fact that living organisms eventually die. In contrast, evolution teaches that lifeless material spontaneously produced life, and then systematically developed ever-greater capabilities. This book strikes at the heart of evolution theory by exposing fraud in evolution science; it also shows how even the simplest cells are too complex to have ever evolved.

The specific objectives of the research were to: map the kind of rehabilitation programs provided to prisoners; clarify who provides them and how they are organised; and, to critically analyse the rehabilitation programs from the point of view of a human rights framework that is underpinned by basic standards for treatment of prisoners. It was premised on the fact that the UPS is currently shifting its approach from a purely penal role to become a correctional institution that upholds offenders' human rights. The overall finding was that indeed the UPS (attempts to) provide rehabilitation to prisoners. The types of rehabilitation programs are of varying degrees of efficiency. Particularly, programs in the UPS were undermined by prison overcrowding, poor resourcing, and understaffing. They mostly include functional adult literacy for those without prior academic education, and formal education at primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. They also include vocational and skills training, and limited psychosocial interventions.Psychosocial interventions were l...

Anyong Qing Differential Evolution. Fundamentals and Applications in Electrical Engineering

Differential evolution is a very simple but very powerful stochastic optimizer. Since its inception, it has proved very efficient and robust in function optimization and has been applied to solve problems in many scientific and engineering fields. In Differential Evolution , Dr. Qing begins with an overview of optimization, followed by a state-of-the-art review of differential evolution, including its fundamentals and up-to-date advances. He goes on to explore the relationship between differential evolution strategies, intrinsic control parameters, non-intrinsic control parameters, and problem features through a parametric study. Findings and recommendations on the selection of strategies and intrinsic control parameter values are presented. Lastly, after an introductory review of reported applications in electrical and electronic engineering fields, different research groups demonstrate how the methods can be applied to such areas as: multicast routing, multisite mapping in grid environments, antenna arrays, analog electric circuit sizing, electricity markets, stochastic tracking in video sequences, and color quantization. Contains a systematic and comprehensive overview of differential evolution Reviews the latest differential evolution research Describes a comprehensive parametric study conducted over a large test bed Shows how methods can be practically applied to mobile communications grid computing circuits image processing power engineering Sample applications demonstrated by research groups in the United Kingdom, Australia, Italy, Turkey, China, and Eastern Europe Provides access to companion website with code examples for download Differential Evolution is ideal for application engineers, who can use the methods described to solve specific engineering problems. After years of being in the adoption process and waiting for a match, they finally receive the long-awaited phone call to travel to Uganda to meet their children. What happens next is an unbelievable cascade of events, in which the author ends up living in Uganda for a year, dealing with child trafficking, lies, and corruption. She must confront agencies, lawyers, corrupt pastors and social workers. She fills out police reports, hires investigators and armed escorts. In the midst of all this conflict, she forms genuine, lasting friendships. This book chronicles Christine Bonneur’s adoption story, a story of hope, anticipation—and ultimate heartbreak. It’s a story of love for the country and for the people she meets, including mothers who had their children stolen or who were convinced to give them up. C. R. Hallpike Ship of Fools. An Anthology of Learned Nonsense About Primitive Society

Dr. Hallpike spent his first ten years as an anthropologist living with mountain tribes in Ethiopia and Papua New Guinea and writing up his research for publication. He learned that primitive societies are very different from our modern industrialised societies and that it takes a considerable amount study to understand how they work. But since all Man's ancestors used to live in a similar manner, understanding these societies is essential to understanding the human race itself, especially when speculating about our prehistoric ancestors in East Africa. Unfortunately a wide variety of journalists and science writers, historians, linguists, biologists, and especially evolutionary psychologists erroneously believe they are qualified to write about primitive societies without knowing much about them. The result is that many of their superficial speculations have about as much scientific credibility as The Flintstones. The various critical studies contained in Ship of Fools: An Anthology of Learned Nonsense about Primitive Society examine some of the most popular of these speculations and evaluate their scientific merit.Among the learned fools whose works are critiqued are:Yuval Harari's Sapiens: A Brief History of HumankindEmma Byrne's Swearing is Good For YouRené Girard’s theory of learned behaviorWilliam Arens’s The Man-Eating MythNoam Chomsky's theory of universal grammar

A unique and timely review of the emergence of eukaryotic virulence in fungi, oomycetes, and protozoa, as they affect both animals and plants Evolution of Virulence in Eukaryotic Microbes addresses new developments in defining the molecular basis of virulence in eukaryotic pathogens. By examining how pathogenic determinants have evolved in concert with their hosts, often overcoming innate and adaptive immune mechanisms, the book takes a fresh look at the selective processes that have shaped their evolution. Introductory chapters ground the reader in principal evolutionary themes such as phylogenetics and genetic exchange, building a basis of knowledge for later chapters covering advances in genetic tools, how pathogens exchange genetic material in nature, and the common themes of evolutionary adaptation that lead to disease in different hosts. With the goal of linking the research findings of the many disparate scientific communities in the field, the book: Assembles for the first time a collection of chapters on the diversity of eukaryotic microorganisms and the influence of evolutionary forces on the origins and emergence of their virulent attributes Highlights examples from three important, divergent groups of eukaryotic microorganisms that cause disease in animals and plants: oomycetes, protozoan parasites, and fungi Covers how the development of genetic tools has fostered the identification and functional analyses of virulence determinants Addresses how pathogens exchange genetic material in nature via classical or modified meiotic processes, horizontal gene transfer, and sexual cycles including those that are cryptic or even unisexual Provides a broad framework for formulating future studies by illustrating themes common to different pathogenic microbes Evolution of Virulence in Eukaryotic Microbes is an ideal book for microbiologists, evolutionary biologists and medical professionals, as well as graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty members working on the evolution of pathogens.

So lauten meine zentralen Fragestellungen.

By focusing on the cellular mechanisms that underlie ontogeny, phylogeny and regeneration of complex physiologic traits, Evolution, the Logic of Biology demonstrates the use of homeostasis, the fundamental principle of physiology and medicine, as the unifying mechanism for evolution as all of biology. The homeostasis principle can be used to understand how environmental stressors have affected physiologic mechanisms to generate condition-specific novelty through cellular mechanisms. Evolution, the Logic of Biology allows the reader to understand the vertebrate life-cycle as an intergenerational continuum in support of effective, on-going environmental adaptation. By understanding the principles of physiology from their fundamental unicellular origins, culminating in modern-day metazoans, the reader as student, researcher or practitioner will be encouraged to think in terms of the prevention of disease, rather than in the treatment of disease as the eradication of symptoms. By tracing the ontogeny and phylogeny of this and other phenotypic homologies, one can perceive and understand how complex physiologic traits have mechanistically evolved from their simpler ancestral and developmental origins as cellular structures and functions, providing a logic of biology for the first time. Evolution, the Logic of Biology will be an invaluable resource for graduate students and researchers studying evolutionary development, medicine and biology, anthropology, comparative and developmental biology, genetics and genomics, and physiology.
