Linear accelerators are used in High Energy Physics (HEP) experiments performed in leading laboratories around the world like Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron (DESY). In order to decrease costs some of them, such as the X-Ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) located at DESY research centre, are built in a single tunnel. Therefore, part of the accelerator's control electronics is located next to the main beam pipe and exposed to destructive influence of gamma and neutron radiation. These kinds of radiation are produced as parasitic effects of normal operation of the linear accelerator. Knowledge of the radiation doses absorbed by electronics and dose rate production may help to estimate the lifetime of the control systems, to schedule replacement of the electronic devices and to detect incorrect work of the accelerator. The book describes a development version of the Distributed Radiation Monitoring System capable of measuring neutron and gamma doses in several dozen points of the accelerator tunnel. It also looks into issues connected with radiation influence on electronics, radiation dosimetry and communication interfaces in HEP.

Thermoluminescence flat optical fibers have been proposed as a radiation sensor in the high flux radiation field, e.g. nuclear reactor. It is also used as the medical dosimetry for both diagnostic and radiotherapy applications. Subsequently, a flat optical fiber contains pure silica SiO2 and doped (GeB) optical fibers were selected for this research. The proposed flat optical fibers shows admirable linear radiation response behavior within the medical relevant dose range for all of these energies, high-quality reproductivity, independence of radiation energy and dose rate and exhibits a very low thermal fading. From these results, the proposed flat optical fibers can be used as radiation dosimeter and favorably compares with the widely used of TLD100 dosimeter in medical radiotherapy application.

The present work was carried out to improve the quality and shelflife of local dry date fruit variety of Pakistan, Aseel by using different gamma irradiation doses and to examine the effect of gamma irradiation treatment on infestation and microbial load. Dry dates were found to be contaminated with aerobic mesophilic bacteria, yeast and molds. Different fungal species and E.coli were detected in irradiated and control samples. When different gamma radiation doses were applied, complete inhibition of insect growth for upto 6 months was achievable however microbial growth was not reduced to acceptable level which can be lowered by prior physico-chemical treatment.

Gamma-ray spectrometry is a non-destructive technique which has the advantage of not requiring laborious sample preparation. However, in order to obtain activity concentration values in the analyzed samples or the environment, prior knowledge of the full-energy peak efficiency (at each photon energy) for given measurement conditions is required. Usually the efficiency calibration of gamma-ray spectrometric systems is based on the use of standard radioactive sources of very similar geometrical dimensions, density, and chemical composition to the sample under study. To have calibration sources similar to the samples implies conditions that cannot be fulfilled in many cases. One effective procedure to overcome these difficulties is the use of Monte Carlo simulation, which allows the peak efficiencies to be calculated taking into account the detailed characteristics of the detector and sample. In this work, examples on how Monte Carlo simulation is applied for self absorption corrections (environmental samples) and efficiency calibration of detectors for "in situ" measurements are presented. The methodology used for uncertainty calculation in gamma-ray spectrometry is described.

Nutritive analysis marked seasonal and body-part variations in moisture, protein, lipid, ash, calcium and phosphorus contents i.e., summer, autumn and winter as 80.07%, 80.37%, 76.99%; 19.20%, 18.03%, 21.30%; 1.23%, 1.07%, 2.99%; 1.48%, 2.00%, 1.21%; 0.19%, 0.21%, 0.14% and 0.10%, 0.08% & 0.10% in edible-part while 77.27%, 76.27%, 73.34%; 16.45%, 17.03%, 19.79%; 1.40%, 1.02%, 4.33%; 6.60%, 7.33%, 6.25%; 2.24%, 2.78%, 1.67% and 0.17%, 0.15% & 0.21% in head-on respectively. The microlithographic process, essential in the fabrication of microdevices, uses high-energy radiation to transfer a pattern onto a thin film of polymer resist. Pattern transfer occurs by modifying the properties (solubility or volatility) of the polymer film exposed to radiation. Poly(olefin sulfones) exhibit a high sensitivity to x-rays, which is a desirable property for polymer resists used in the microlithographic process. The potential utility of these new resins prompted a study of the mechanism of degradation promoted by x-ray radiation. In this study, the effect of x-ray radiation on polysulfones with varied chemical structures was analyzed using x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy and in-situ mass spectroscopy (MS). Interesting differences in the mode of degradation of certain poly(olefin sulfones) was observed. The results provide important groundwork for further studies of polysulfones as x-ray resists.

The world's ever-growing demand for power has created an urgent need for new efficient and sustainable sources of energy and electricity. Today's consumers of portable electronics also demand devices that not only deliver more power but are also environmentally friendly. Fuel cells are an important alternative energy source, with promise in military, commercial and industrial applications, for example power vehicles and portable devices. A fuel cell is an electrochemical device that directly converts the chemical energy of a fuel into electrical energy. Fuel cells represent the most efficient energy conversion technologies to-date and are an integral part in the new and renewable energy chain (e.g., solar, wind and hydropower). Fuel cells can be classified as either high-temperature or lowtemperature, depending on their operating temperature, and have different materials requirements. The main drawback of currently used photovoltaic cell is its low conversion efficiency and materials with the appropriate band gaps that can perfectly match the broad range of solar radiation. Recently it has been shown that the energy gap of InxGa1-xN alloys potentially can be continuously varied from 0.7 to 3.4 eV, providing a perfect matching to the full-solar-spectrum. Therefore, InxGa1-xN becomes a promising material for very high efficiency multijunction solar cell. Any desired value of bandgap can be obtained from this material choosing the appropriate composition. In this work, InxGa1-xN-based multijunction solar cells have been designed theoretically for high efficiency and the performance of the designed solar cells are evaluated with various parameters.

Onion (Allium cepa L.) is one of the most widely grown vegetable in Pakistan and a means to earn valuable foreign exchange for the country. Microbial spoilage of onion is a major cause resulting in post harvest loss every year. In the present study, gamma radiation treatment was used to reduce the pathogenic microflora of Allium cepa L. hence increasing post harvest storage life. The major exported onion variety of Punjab (Desi Red) was selected for the study. The onion bulbs were irradiated at the doses of 0.05, 0.10 and 0.15 kGy at PARAS Foods, Lahore. Then the comparison of microbial populations of onion was made between control and irradiated samples. The impact of radiation dose on weight loss and organoleptic qualities of onion was also evaluated. The results revealed that gamma irradiation significantly affected bioburden, weight loss and organoleptic properties. Onion bulbs irradiated at the dose of 0.15 kGy showed minimum weight loss, reduced microbial load and preservation of organoleptic qualities of onions.
