There have been extraordinary developments in nanomaterials in the past two decades. Nanomaterial processing is one of the key components for this success. This volume, titled Processing of Nanoparticle Materials and Nanostructured Films, is a collection of the papers presented at Controlled Processing of Nanoparticle-based Materials and Nanostructured Films symposium held during the Materials Science and Technology 2009 conference (MS&T’09), October 25-29, 2009 in Pittsburgh, PA. It summarizes the progress that has been achieved most recently in understanding and processing nanoparticle-based materials and nanostructured films. Nanoparticle-based materials and nanostructured films hold great promise to enable a broad range of new applications. This includes high energy conversion efficiency fuel cells, smart materials, high performance sensors, and structural materials under extreme environments. However, many barriers still exist in understanding and controlling the processing of nanoparticle-based materials and nanostructured films. In particular, agglomeration must be controlled in powder synthesis and processing to enable the fabrication of homogeneous green or composite microstructures, and microstructure evolution must be controlled to preserve the size and properties of the nanostructures in the finished materials. Also, novel nanostructure designs are highly needed at all stages of bulk and thin film nanomaterial formation process to enable unique performances, low cost, and green engineering. This volume focuses on three general topics, 1) Processing to preserve and improve nanoscale size, structure, and properties, 2) Novel design and understanding of new nanomaterials, such as new synthesis approaches, templating, and 3D assembly technologies, and 3) Applications of nanoparticle assemblies and composites and thin films.

Shabab Asmara, Anjum Safia Nano-crystalline thin films of Antimony Substituted Cobalt Ferrites

In modern world thin film technology has covers remarkable place in the field of industry as well as electronic media. Advance progress in computer technology forces many researchers to give attention on thin film technology. Ferrites thin films have been significantly used for high density storage and magnetic recording devices because of low noise ability, moderate saturation magnetization and chemical stability. At present the thin films are not in good qualities because the techniques applied for deposition are not versatile. This book therefore focuses on deposition of antimony substituted cobalt ferrites thin films using Electron Beam Deposition technique which is one of the advance and versatile method for deposition. The deposited thin films are post annealed at different temperatures to improve its quality. The as-deposited and post annealed ferrites films then characterized by XRD, Raman spectroscopy, AFM, VSM, UV-visible and Ellipsometry techniques. These analysis imposed light on improve structural, magnetic and optical properties of film that make ferrites film useful tool for magnetic recording applications like audio, videotape and digital recording disks.

Salman Ayesha, Anjum Safia Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy in CoCr0.5Fe1.5O4 Ferrite Thin Films

Spinel ferrite thin films are promising candidates for high frequency applications due to their remarkable electrical and magnetic properties. Cobalt ferrite thin films have gained widespread interests in the applications of magneto-optical recording due to their large perpendicular magneto-crystalline anisotropy. The addition of non-magnetic Cr3+ ions could produce sufficient changes in the structure of cobalt ferrite. In order to achieve homogeneous cobalt chromium ferrite (CoCr0.5Fe1.7O4) thin films, various techniques such as electron beam evaporation, pulsed laser deposition (PLD), sol-gel, dip coating and spray pyrolysis have been developed. The deposition of CoCr0.5Fe1.7O4 thin films by electron beam evaporation technique is the focus of this book. This book also covers the effect of annealing temperature on structural, surface morphological, magnetic and optical properties of cobalt chromium ferrite thin films. It is noted that Ms and Hc increases with annealing temperature. Band gap energy and optical constants (n,k,ϵ) decreases and increases with temperature indicative of good quality of thin films. So, the contents of this book will be helpful for the new researchers.

Semiconductor clusters have one extraordinarily important property that on doping and on changes in size, their properties change appreciably and in a controllable way. Current research into semiconductor clusters is focused on the properties of thin films having nanometre range grain size. The wide range of optical and electrical properties of II-VI group compounds make them an important class of materials and competing candidates for silicon and other semiconductor materials in photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications. In this monograph, the structural, spectroscopic and optoelectronic properties of Cadmium Sulfide, Cadmium Telluride and Zinc Oxide thin films are studied in detail. The effects of substrate and grain size on structural and optical properties of these materials are also discussed. Moreover, the synthesis of CdS nanoparticles and fabrication of ZnO thin films by the sol-gel methods and their spectroscopic characterization are described. The ab-initio DFT calculations are carried for the computations of the DOS and band structures of the CdS hexagonal wurtzite, CdTe zinc blende and ZnO hexagonal wurtzite. Effect of Cd dopping in ZnO is also studied theoretically.

A fabrication process for PFCB waveguide air-trench bends on silicon substrate with electron beam lithography (EBL) and autoalignment has been developed and a high efficiency air-trench bend (97.2% for TE polarization and 96.2% for TM polarization) has been demonstrated. The simulation predicts an optical efficiency of 98.5% for TE and 98.2% for TM when the Goos Hanchen shift is properly accounted for. We have adapted this process to making air trench bends in PFCB waveguides on polyimide substrates. Compared to silicon substrates, the polyimide substrates have the advantage of less coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) mismatch with PFCB films, which improves fabrication repeatability and yield. Using air-trench bends, an ultracompact 8 x 8 arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) demultiplexer (200 GHz) for WDM has been designed and fabricated on a polyimide substrate. Compared to a conventional AWG in the same material system, the air-trench bend AWG shrinks the required chip area by a factor of 20. The decreased size is a factor in reducing the measured thermal shift to -0.012 nm/C and decreasing the polarization-dependent wavelength shift to 1.3 nm.

Zaheer Abbas Khan Fabrication and characterisation of multilayer thin film using self assembly of colloidal gold and silica nanoparticles

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2011 in the subject Materials Science, Asian Insitute of Technology, language: English, abstract: A novel approach of multilayered thin film based on layer-by-layer deposition using colloidal nanoparticles was carried out in this work. The films were made by the self-assembly of oppositely charged metal and dielectric nanoparticles, alternately capped with polymers. Synthesized colloidal suspensions of gold nanoparticles (~20nm) and silica nanoparticles (~30nm) were used as the building blocks for the self-organisation of the films. Capping with PDDA and chitosan was used effectively to control the optical absorption of the surface plasmon resonance peaks of the gold nanoparticles. Using different combinations of layer formation, absorption characteristics in the near-ultraviolet (NUV), green and blue region were controlled through capping and varying the thickness of the film. Capping with chitosan or PDDA reduced the absorption peak of the coated silica nanoparticles in a similar fashion. Peak absorption in the UV range was achieved by assembling bare silica nanoparticles layers onto layers of gold nanoparticles. Transmission color was controlled (less than 1% color distance per added bi-layer) by changing the film thickness. Optical modeling of multilayer thin films constructed with oppositely charged nanoparticles helped us to understand phenomenon such as surface plasmon resonance, absorbance, transmittance and reflectance. Ma...

Morteza Amjadi Stretchable Strain Sensors Based on the Ag Nanowires-elastomer Nanocomposite

Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Engineering - Artificial Intelligence, , language: English, abstract: The demand for flexible and wearable electronic devices is increasing due to their facile interaction with the human body. Flexible, stretchable and wearable sensors can be easily mounted on clothing or directly attached to the body. Especially, highly stretchable and sensitive strain sensors are needed for the human motion detection. Here, we report highly flexible, stretchable, sensitive strain sensors based on the nanocomposite of silver nanowire network and PDMS elastomer in the form of the sandwich structure (Ag nanowire thin film embedded between two layers of PDMS). Sandwich structure made the Ag nanowire network electromechanically robust due to the complete penetration of PDMS into the 3D network of the Ag nanowire thin film. The Ag nanowirenetwork-elastomer nanocomposite based strain sensors show strong piezoresistivity with tunable gauge factors in the ranges of 2 to 14 and a high stretchability up to 70%. Piezoresistivity of the strain sensor was further investigated by a computational model. Ag nanowires were randomly assigned into the PDMS matrix. Moreover, the connectivity of all pair nanowires was investigated by junction identification and total conductance of the network for different strains was calculated. We found an excellent agreement between our experimental and computational results. The mechanisms of piezoresistivity were explai...

The method of CVD (chemical vapor deposition) is a versatile technique to fabricate high-quality thin films and structured surfaces in the nanometer regime from the vapor phase. Already widely used for the deposition of inorganic materials in the semiconductor industry, CVD has become the method of choice in many applications to process polymers as well. This highly scalable technique allows for synthesizing high-purity, defect-free films and for systematically tuning their chemical, mechanical and physical properties. In addition, vapor phase processing is critical for the deposition of insoluble materials including fluoropolymers, electrically conductive polymers, and highly crosslinked organic networks. Furthermore, CVD enables the coating of substrates which would otherwise dissolve or swell upon exposure to solvents. The scope of the book encompasses CVD polymerization processes which directly translate the chemical mechanisms of traditional polymer synthesis and organic synthesis in homogeneous liquids into heterogeneous processes for the modification of solid surfaces. The book is structured into four parts, complemented by an introductory overview of the diverse process strategies for CVD of polymeric materials. The first part on the fundamentals of CVD polymers is followed by a detailed coverage of the materials chemistry of CVD polymers, including the main synthesis mechanisms and the resultant classes of materials. The third part focuses on the applications of these materials such as membrane modification and device fabrication. The final part discusses the potential for scale-up and commercialization of CVD polymers.

Shyjumon Ibrahimkutty Thin films by Metal Nanoclusters

High quality thin films can be produced by cluster beam deposition, because the impact of cluster beams produce much stronger effects on surface than ion beams with the same total energy. Nano-size metal clusters produced inside a NC 200 gas aggregation source are deposited on a substrate and these cluster films are characterized by different techniques to study: the cluster growth and transport mechanisms inside the cluster source, the cluster size dependence on the temperature inside the cluster forming chamber and at the time of deposition, chemical composition, etc. Analyzing the Ti nano-clusters at various temperature inside the cluster forming chamber, it is observed that the cluster parameters strongly depend on the temperature of the magnetron chamber walls. Molecules of titanium oxides may be nuclei of condensation and accelerate the nucleation process. A theoretical analysis based on experimental results helps to describe various stages of cluster evolution from their formation up to the deposition on the substrate and provides estimations for parameters of the processes involving clusters.

Matthew King Cross-Examined Films. Engaging the Church with Modern Art

After spending nearly a quarter of a lifetime watching popular and independent films, Matthew King, RN, makes a point to criticize the Christian church for its lack of engagement with films. He believes that the lack of engagement and the strong denunciation of films only because of their sexual or violent content has lost an entire generation because of the inability to speak the millennial language of popular Hollywood films. With searing prose and biting confrontation, King attempts to engage films through the lens of theology, philosophy, and political analysis to assist the church in identifying positive as well as negative examples of the topics within to better engage an entire generation. Through this investigation, Christians and non-Christians alike will be both enlightened and surprised at what popular films have unconsciously taught them from a young age.

Shramana Ganguly (Mishra) MICROWAVE ABSORPTION IN CONDUCTING THIN FILMS

Near-field microwave microscopy has been used as a non-destructive tool for current distribution mapping in high-Tc superconductors and other conducting films at room temperature. The focused microwave emitted from the tip of a near-field scanning microwave microprobe is absorbed in the thin film in a small spot of size approximately same as the size of the probe tip. The heat will spread into the adjacent regions in the thin film sample through thermal diffusion. The temperature rise due to local heating will lead to the change in the local resistivity of the sample which results in a voltage response depending on the local current density and the input microwave power. The map of voltage response acquired while the microwave probe scans the film surface can provide information about the surface morphology and the non-uniformity of the electromagnetic properties of the film. Hence in order to understand the absorption of microwave radiation in conducting thin films, a theoretical model based on heat diffusion is developed in this book to determine how the different parameters affect the temperature rise and heat diffusion.

Due to their small size and thickness, metallic thin films exhibit novel properties which largely differ from the bulk materials. Due to their significant properties it can be used as different applications. Generally the shape, size, and size distribution of particulates and grains can be controlled by adjusting the reaction condition such as external and internal parameters like temperature, electrolyte concentration, current density, PH of the solution. Sonoelectrochemistry is the study of the effects of the combination of ultrasonic vibration with electrode processes occurring at surfaces of electrodes immersed in a solution in an electrochemical cell. This book provides a new method for the synthesis of metallic thin film i.e., sonoelectrosynthesis. The grain size, microstructure and mechanical properties of the electrodeposited metal thin film depends upon various parameters like temperature, PH, current density, and concentration of electrolyte and also ultrasound has many numerous effects on the grain size, hardness, porosity and brightness of the deposits. The analysis should help to synthesis of metallic thin film by sonoelectrosynthesis with better properties.

Qinna Shen The Politics of Magic. Defa Fairy-Tale Films

From Paul Verhoeven’s The Cold Heart in 1950 to Konrad Petzold’s The Story of the Goose Princess and Her Loyal Horse Falada in 1989, East Germany’s state-sponsored film company, DEFA (Deutsche Film-Aktiengesellschaft), produced over forty feature-length, live-action fairy-tale films based on nineteenth-century folk and literary tales. While many of these films were popular successes and paved the way for the studio’s other films to enter the global market, DEFA’s fairy-tale corpus has not been studied in its entirety. In The Politics of Magic: DEFA Fairy-Tale Films, Qinna Shen fills this gap by analyzing the films on thematic and formal levels and examining their embedded agendas in relation to the cultural politics of the German Democratic Republic. In five chapters, Shen compares the films with earlier print versions of the same stories and analyzes revisions made in DEFA’s film adaptations. She also distinguishes the DEFA fairy-tale films from National Socialist, West German, and Disney adaptations of the same tales. Her archival work reconstitutes the cultural-historical context in which films were produced and received, and incorporates the films into the larger narrative of DEFA. For the first time, the banned DEFA fairy-tale comedy, The Robe (1961/1991), is discussed in depth. The book’s title The Politics of Magic is not intended to suggest that DEFA fairy-tale films were merely mouthpieces of official ideology and propaganda. On the contrary, Shen shows that the film...

Covers the fundamental science of grinding and polishing by examining the chemical and mechanical interactions over many scale lengths Manufacturing next generation optics has been, and will continue to be, enablers for enhancing the performance of advanced laser, imaging, and spectroscopy systems. This book reexamines the age-old field of optical fabrication from a materials-science perspective, specifically the multiple, complex interactions between the workpiece (optic), slurry, and lap. It also describes novel characterization and fabrication techniques to improve and better understand the optical fabrication process, ultimately leading to higher quality optics with higher yield. Materials Science and Technology of Optical Fabrication is divided into two major parts. The first part describes the phenomena and corresponding process parameters affecting both the grinding and polishing processes during optical fabrication. It then relates them to the critical resulting properties of the optic (surface quality, surface figure, surface roughness, and material removal rate). The second part of the book covers a number of related topics including: developed forensic tools used to increase yield of optics with respect to surface quality (scratch/dig) and fracture loss; novel characterization and fabrication techniques used to understand/quantify the fundamental phenomena described in the first part of the book; novel and recent optical fabrication processes and their connection with the fundamental interactions; and finally, special techniques utilized to fabricate optics with high damage resistance. Focuses on the fundamentals of grinding and polishing, from a materials science viewpoint, by studying the chemical and mechanical interactions/phenomena over many scale lengths between the workpiece, slurry, and lap Explains how these phenomena affect the major characteristics of the optic workpiece—namely surface figure, surface quality, surface roughness, and material removal rate Describes methods to improve the major characteristics of the workpiece as well as improve process yield, such as through fractography and scratch forensics Covers novel characterization and fabrication techniques used to understand and quantify the fundamental phenomena of various aspects of the workpiece or fabrication process Details novel and recent optical fabrication processes and their connection with the fundamental interactions Materials Science and Technology of Optical Fabrication is an excellent guidebook for process engineers, fabrication engineers, manufacturing engineers, optical scientists, and opticians in the optical fabrication industry. It will also be helpful for students studying material science and applied optics/photonics.
