Women frequently encounter greater limitations and fewer opportunities than men, especially in regard to income-generating activities. They face social and economic constraints that perpetuate poverty and spans generations. However, significant opportunities exist in the informal, small-scale enterprise sector for which women should take advantage. Community groups are popular institutions in Kenya's rural areas. The groups help provide services that the government, has failed to deliver. Also the emergence of microfinance institutions to offer lending funds has been of great impact. This study sought to investigate the factors affecting women microfinance loan repayment. The findings of the study may be useful to policy makers in government, private sector, Non-Governmental and Faith Based Organisations.

John Bushnell's analysis of previously unstudied church records and provincial archives reveals surprising marriage patterns in Russian peasant villages in the 18th and 19th centuries. For some villages the rate of unmarried women reached as high as 70 percent. The religious group most closely identified with female peasant marriage aversion was the Old Believer Spasovite covenant, and Bushnell argues that some of these women might have had more agency in the decision to marry than more common peasant tradition ordinarily allowed. Bushnell explores the cataclysmic social and economic impacts these decisions had on the villages, sometimes dragging entire households into poverty and ultimate dissolution. In this act of defiance, this group of socially, politically, and economically subordinated peasants went beyond traditional acts of resistance and reaction.

The progressive understanding of poverty include not only economic and material conditions, but also a lack of power, freedom and resources to decide and shape one's own life. Social and legal norms and economic structures based around sexuality have a tangible impact on people's physical security, bodily integrity, health, education, mobility and economic status. The expressions for the interwoven relation of poverty and sexuality are many. Many people with 'deviant' sexuality are subject to economic discrimination, leading to marginalization that has effect of reducing their livelihood opportunities. In this Publication the links between women's sexual rights and poverty in the African context is explored . It illustrates how the lack of protection and recognition of women's sexual rights as understood in the African context can be the cause and consequences of poverty. The publication provides arguments as to how addressing sexual rights of women in poverty alleviation programmes can contribute to the realization of meaningful development for the African women and a way forward as to how the issue of Sexual Rights and poverty can be fostered.

Beyond the Primary Commodity Trap offers an alternative paradigm for analysing African development from the current "aid and aids" narrative. Taking as its point of departure Africa's failure to extricate itself from over dependence on raw materials and its seeming inability to industrialise, it offers an analysis of the political forces that have shaped and continue to shape Africa's political economy. The book focuses particularly on the endemic poverty in the continent and how it interfaces with politics. Written with the general reader in mind, the book also examines some of the internal dynamics in Africa and how these combine with the continent's history and some other extraneous factors to explain the current conditions of economic poverty and the poverty of leadership in many parts of the continent.

Microcredit operations began with the specific objective of poverty alleviation in Bangladesh. Poverty is widespread in Bangladesh. It is even more intense among the rural women of the country. Poverty situation improved with the expansion of microcrdit and rural women gained some empowerment as they had their own income through participation in the credit activities. But they are still far from achieving equal status with men because microcredit primarily addresses income poverty and it has inherent weaknesses in facilitating other conditions necessary for full empowerment of women. Not only are the inherent weaknesses, the socio-economic environment of rural Bangladesh, where microcredit functions, is also a big impediment to achieving women empowerment. Therefore, a comprehensive approach, which includes microcredit too, is necessary for further empowering the rural women of Bangladesh. This approach includes social mobilization, awareness-building, regulations enhancing, equitable financial practices and government initiatives.

In principle, the present data represent a scientific approach that was aiming to reflect the nutritional status of children under 5 years in El Fau rural area (Gadaref State) which indicates the situation in the eastern part of the country. Based on the preliminary data provided by Sudanese Development Call Organization (NIDAA),the area records high rate of illiteracy (particularly among women), rampant poverty, lack of basic health services, unsafe drinking water, high prevalence of malaria, bilharziasis and diseases related to poor sanitation and hygiene. Indeed, these factors affect the children health and nutritional status in the study area.

Pranab Bardhan Awakening Giants, Feet of Clay. Assessing the Economic Rise of China and India

2152 руб.
The recent economic rise of China and India has attracted a great deal of attention--and justifiably so. Together, the two countries account for one-fifth of the global economy and are projected to represent a full third of the world's income by 2025. Yet, many of the views regarding China and India's market reforms and high growth have been tendentious, exaggerated, or oversimplified. Awakening Giants, Feet of Clay scrutinizes the phenomenal rise of both nations, and demolishes the myths that have accumulated around the economic achievements of these two giants in the last quarter century. Exploring the challenges that both countries must overcome to become true leaders in the international economy, Pranab Bardhan looks beyond short-run macroeconomic issues to examine and compare China and India's major policy changes, political and economic structures, and current general performance. Bardhan investigates the two countries' economic reforms, each nation's pattern and composition of growth, and the problems afflicting their agricultural, industrial, infrastructural, and financial sectors. He considers how these factors affect China and India's poverty, inequality, and environment, how political factors shape each country's pattern of burgeoning capitalism, and how significant poverty reduction in both countries is mainly due to domestic factors--not global integration, as most would believe. He shows how authoritarianism has distorted Chinese deve...

Many development programmes in the developing world have today been redirected in the name of poverty alleviation. However, what these programmes lack is an efficient monitoring system to track progress from poverty alleviation interventions. This work establishes a customized baseline poverty profile that will serve as a reference point for monitoring Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRSP).This work is especially suitable for developing countries that have devolved decades of Central Administrative Controls to Local and District Councils. Over the years, monetary parameters were used to assess rural poverty. This work uses non-monitoring indicators grouped into demographic, basic needs, assets, means of livelihood, social services and empowerment structures to determine poverty status of the population in an effort to evaluate the impact of development initiative. The analysis of this work should help local and district council officers to address the central issues in their effort at poverty alleviation. This work is especially useful also to Development Practitioners, Professionals in development and Administrators interested in eradicating poverty in the developing world.

Early in the thirteenth century a young woman named Clare was so moved by the teachings of Francis of Assisi that she renounced her possessions, vowing to live a life of radical poverty. Today Clare is remembered for her relationship with Francis, but her own dedication to poverty and her struggle to gain papal approval for a Franciscan Rule for women is a fascinating story that has not received the attention it deserves. In The Privilege of Poverty, Joan Mueller tells this story, and in so doing she reshapes our understanding of early Franciscan history.Clare knew, as did Francis, that she needed a Rule to preserve the "privilege of poverty"-a papal exemption that gave monasteries of women permission not to rely on endowment income. Early Franciscan women gave their dowries to the poor and were as passionately holy and shrewdly political in this choice as were their male counterparts. Mueller shows the crucial role played in this by Agnes of Prague, one of Clare's closest collaborators. A Bohemian princess who declined an engagement to Emperor Frederick II in order to found a monastery of Poor Ladies in Prague, Agnes capitalized on the papal need for a political alliance with the kingdom of Bohemia to negotiate the privilege of poverty for her monastery and set up a hospital for the poor in Prague. The efforts of Clare and Agnes ultimately paid off, as Pope Innocent IV approved a Franciscan Rule for women with the privilege of poverty at its core on Clare's de...
