EPA between EU and ACP. Ethiopia is taken as a sample study. Two major economic sectors - agriculture and industry are selected. SAM of 2005/06 data of EDRI is used. Recursive CGE model is used. The paper considers two scenarios on the two sectors -complete and gradual removal of import tariff. Applying both scenarios on industry sector resulted in export of agriculture to reduce while industry with strategic products to increase. Strategic products import for gradual reduction on leather & metal decreases while clothing remains constant; tobacco with textile increases. Industrial with strategic products import increases in complete removal. Agricultural items import also increases. Labour demand for agriculture and industry which includes skilled labour indicates mixed results in both shocks. GDP increases at market price and factor cost in both shocks. Applying the scenarios on agriculture sector resulted in similar values between FTA and baseline scenarios on both sectors. In conclusions gradual reduction of tariff rate reduces negative impact. On strategic products government should consider other alternatives strategy to solve supply problems and promote productivity.

Growth in the Ghanaian cocoa sector has been achieved through expansion in area cultivated rather than improvement in yield. Average yield in Ghana's cocoa industry are less than 500kg/ha while on-station trials is above 2000kg/ha suggesting an avenue for increasing productivity through efficient and effective mobilization of factors of production. That is, for cocoa to continue play it's key role, producers ought to optimize their resource use in the industry. This book provides an empirical insight into production efficiency of smallholder cocoa farmers in Ghana using farm level data. The productivity and resource-use-efficiency were estimated through stochastic production frontier. The study revealed that cocoa farms in Ghana exhibited increasing returns-to-scale indicating reducing average cost of production. The mean technical efficiency level was 49%. The analysis is necessary in the global quest to boost production through efficient use of resources, and very useful for technocrats in the industry, production economists and anyone else who wants to enter into the industry.

In this study various factors affecting traditional domestic water consumption in a water-short city of Afghanistan which has a very low coverage of water supply services were carried out. The objective of the study was to assess domestic water consumption from a socioeconomic perspective and identify the most vital factors affecting the water consumption at household (Hh) level. A questionnaire survey was applied in Kandahar City, Afghanistan. Two areas were selected; first one with access to the piped-water (PW) supply and the other area which has no access to PW supply. From the results it was obtained that Hh income, water price, Hh size and access to adequate source of water are the main factors influencing the water consumption at Hh level. The results also suggest that domestic water is not affordable based on the bench marks of the World Bank and ADB for people who have no access to PW. In addition, some secondary data was collected to assess the performance of public water supply utility at Kandahar. The data reveals poor quality of management due to lack of qualified staff in various aspects of infrastructure, financial, technical and managerial components of the utility.

While this is the façade of this industry, the backstage of this industry is very different and highly unorganized as is evident in this report. While Price Waterhouse Coopers along with FICCI was one among the first ones to make a report and call this a sunrise industry, others like Ernest &Young (E&Y) and McKinney's have followed the trend. Other than very brief mentions here and there, even at policy levels, this industry does not seem to have attracted that it duly requires nor has it attracted investments of serious magnitude. The supply chain of this industry is intensely temporary in nature as the business is seriously intermittent. This document goes on to explore variety of events and vendors as also naming relationship between the client and vendors, power of client over a vendor, and lack of established customer satisfaction methodologies as key factors which influence the relationship between the vendors and clients in this industry.

The work examines the grounds for successful industry development in transition economies, focusing on the two types of ownership: foreign and domestic. The distinction is thus made between industries that are predominantly based on foreign direct investment or on local entrepreneurship, with the aim of establishing which of these contributes more to the development of the local economy and human capital. The method of analysis focuses on case studies of the software industry in three transition countries - Bulgaria, Estonia and Romania, representing different variations of the types of industry ownership. For the purpose of establishing the most successfully developed industry, four factors /groups of factors are analyzed: industry size; production linkages and knowledge transfer; specialization, value-added and innovation; and employment conditions. It is shown that the foreign-owned industries of Estonia and Romania have developed more successfully than the local-owned Bulgarian industry. It can be implied that foreign-owned industries, in particular knowledge-intensive ones like the analyzed software industry, provide better chances for development than local ones.

The analysis takes into consideration the elements that could affect the balance of trade, thus saving or investment. A panel data, that leaves out countries from East Europe, is created, and takes values that go from 2002 to 2013. The panel data shows that technology gaps and capital movements have been the main factors that affected the balance of trade of the peripheral countries. Peripheral countries did not invest enough in projects that could enhance the productivity, leading to a competitiveness loss that was not followed by a correction of the wage levels. Moreover, capital movements have been financing consumption surges in Greece and Portugal, whereas in Spain and Ireland those capitals have fueled credit booms and house bubbles. Therefore, those countries have been experiencing a worsening of their balance of trade, and investors have not been willed anymore to finance additional debt. Indeed, Members of the euroarea could not guarantee that the central ...

Nutrients enrichment especially Phosphorus, have been identified as the major cause of eutrophication and several studies show that aquatic primary productivity is frequently limited by the availability of nutrients. The ability to identify nutrient, physical and chemical factors affecting fresh water health is therefore of a considerable importance to our understanding of the ecology of aquatic fish for fish management. Unpredictable fluctuations in the physical and chemical characteristics of lakes e.g. temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and conductivity have been shown to affect the richness and structure of lake fish. Information generated from the study herein contribute immensely to the effective decision-making and management of the small lakes’ resources to meet human developmental needs.

The differences in relative industry productivity across countries are of interest and importance for several reasons. The difference in total factor productivity (TFP) explains comparative advantage, international differences in price structure, and gaps in income and growth across countries. Productivity comparison by industry is attracting interest because the overall TFP comparison to the economy has strong assumptions such as the same production function and identical factor prices over all industries. Irrespective of the sizes of manufacturing industries in the economy, the industries are important contributors to economic growth. The reason is that manufacturing generates much new technology and has big spillover effects on other sectors of the economy. Productivity comparisons across countries require a multilateral productivity index based on the Malmquist index. This book explores multilateral TFP comparison of manufacturing industries in 12 OECD counties since 1980 and identifies changes in TFPs over time and across countries.

Cotton is said to be a gift of the Indian sub-continent to human civilization. The key role that cotton plays in our economy can be gauged from the extent of area under the crop as well as trade, processing, manufacture, export of raw cotton and cotton textile goods. Cotton industry is one of the largest employers in the country accounting for nearly 15 per cent of the total labour force. There are about 60 million owner cultivators in India, out of which about 15 million produce cotton. The processing and manufacturing of cotton from ‘Kapi’ to textile provides employment to more than 15 million people in the country. Being a commercial crop, cotton is so remunerative that it is being grown by farmers in even un-prescribed agro-climatic zones. The reason for this, practice rests with the reality that it fetches higher returns. In recent years cotton crop has been experiencing many ups and down due to natural and man-made calamities. Dependency of the crop on rain fall, fluctuations of the area under the crop, fluctuations in productivity due to pests and diseases, fluctuations in prices are the few important factors.
