Sergey Golunov The Elephant in the Room. Corruption and Cheating in Russian Universities.

This book offers a long overdue account of the wide range of corruption and cheating practices in Russian higher education, including bribery, financial fraud, clientelism, plagiarism, exam cheating, and much more. Serghei Golunov ruthlessly uncovers the recent social trends that have created a favourable ground for such malpractices and evaluates the efficiency of measures taken against corruption and fraud by various actors. Although corruption and cheating are so wide-spread in most Russian universities that the real value of their diplomas is very questionable, these problems are prioritized neither by higher education managers nor by foreign actors such as partner universities, participants of the Bologna process, or the authors of global university rankings.

We suggest an original method of student cheating evaluation based on the comparison of students’ grades in exams in class, home assignments and experimental homework. The data for the study is collected from the survey of 2012–2013 sophomores of the International College of Economics and Finance at the National Research University Higher School of Economics in Moscow, Russia. At the end of the course in Statistics in addition to standard assignments (homework and exams) students were given experimental homework with a ban on cooperation among them. The violation of this rule was qualified as cheating. The scale of cooperation is measured and then tested through the stochastic frontier technique; it reveals connection with the GPA level, students’ expectations of the cheaters’ share and students’ moral norms. We also find different behavioral patterns for high and low performing students as well as country specific context of student cheating behavior.

Sabah Noori Abbas Al Mihyawi Assessment of Investment Attractiveness in Arab Countries

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, University of Szczecin (Faculty of Economics and Management), language: English, abstract: The flow of investments in developing countries varies greatly across countries. In this research, due to the lack of capital markets in some of the Arab countries we have been focusing on foreign direct investment as one of types of foreign investment. Foreign investment comprises foreign direct investment (FDI), which inflows have provided the strong impetus on economic development across countries. FDI serves as an important source of supply of funds for domestic investments, promoting capital formation in the host country. Nowadays, more attention is paid to the issues of foreign direct investments at both national and international levels. According to World Investments reports, many developing countries, including the Arab countries, have attracted only small amounts of FDI inflows despite their efforts towards the economic openness. It means many factors impede the flow of foreign capital to Arab countries. The attractiveness of investment is a set of features and factors that allow the investor to evaluate the potential of any country to be more attractive for investment than the other one. Many factors include economic factors, social factors and political factors, which lead to increase in foreign direct investment. The potential investor considers these factors when c...

Through its core themes and action principles, this book can be a valuable resource for faculty, staff, administrators, and governing boards at all types of postsecondary institutions. The book provides a practical framework for achieving excellence in undergraduate education by focusing on: Learning Relationships Expectations Alignment Improvement Leadership The value of an undergraduate education is under greater scrutiny than ever before, and campus leaders must be able to convey the value of their institutions to students, boards, donors, and legislators. Is a college or university degree worth the increasing cost? Are today's students academically adrift? What's the difference between a degree and an education? Responding to these questions requires focused action by individuals and institutions. The Undergraduate Experience offers practical guidance for creating and sustaining excellence in the face of disruption and change in higher education.

Maulahikmah Galinium, Negar Shahbaz Migration of Legacy System to Service Oriented Architecture (Soa)

Legacy system refers to an existing system that has been developed in the past and running critical business processes within a company. It could also be considered as the core of the company's system architecture that has significant business value. Therefore this valuable asset must be highly considered in the adaption to SOA. However, not in all cases the company can migrate the legacy system to SOA successfully. The migration process depends on some factors which vary from one legacy infrastructure and series of business processes to another. There is no easy way to transform the existing legacy assets. The fact that considering the right factors to reach legacy system migration success in a specific company is the key value. Therefore, we studied these factors from both business and technical perspectives. In this book, we studied and shared experiences about the factors influencing success of migrating the legacy system into SOA in five different case companies with different expertise including bank, airline, engineering and furniture companies. This book should help the researchers or the readers who are interested in the service-oriented architecture system.

Essay from the year 2012 in the subject Pedagogy - Job Education, Occupational Training, Further Education, grade: 1-3, University of Dodoma (College of Education), course: Educational planning, language: English, abstract: This paper is about the growing demand of secondary education in Tanzania and it shows a blink of a missing link to quality. It further defines the overlooked terms by many such as education quality and quality it self. It defines education and what a secondary school education mean and it tresses the growths of education in Tanzania. Just as preferred by (Samra and Rajan, 2006) in most cases in the context of this work primary and secondary education are treated together, because they are inextricably linked in so many ways, and because success at the secondary level is fundamentally dependent on getting the basics right at the primary level. In its briefest sense the work is divided into introduction, discussion of different factors influencing education quality in the context of Tanzania and it provides way forward to curb the withering factors to quality education and its conclusion is made forth.

Lle Parm, Ulle Parm Neonatal Mucosal Colonisation

The prospective open label two centre cluster randomised study was conducted in two neonatal intensive care units (NICU) in Estonia. We compared how antibiotics commonly used for empiric therapy of early onset sepsis influence the development of infants mucosal microbiota; identified other risk factors influencing the colonisation process; identified the relatedness of mucosal and blood isolates; defined the value of twice a week collected surveillance cultures in predicting late onset sepsis (LOS).Results showed that risk factors influencing nasopharyngeal and rectal colonisation are similar and species-specific and are closely inter-related making extrapolations from one site to the other feasible. The impact of ampicillin compared with penicillin on mucosal colonisation with Gram-negative ampicillin-resistant strains may have been over-estimated. The frequent opportunistic colonisers were also frequent causative agents of LOS. However, the sensitivity and specificity of mucosal surveillance samples in predicting invasive disease is suboptimal. So, routine and non-targeted surveillance cultures are not efficient in predicting LOS in NICU.
