Psy.D. Ilene F. Kaskel Social Skills Training for Adolescents With Autism

This work addresses the need for age- and setting-appropriate social skills training for adolescents who have autism spectrum disorders. Such a program would be functional in a high school setting, as new policies support autistic students being mainstreamed into regular education schools. Literature is reviewed in the areas of social skills seen in normally functioning adolescents and the existing social skills training methods used both in and outside of schools, to address social skills deficits for those with autism. To limit the scope of this review, the population of focus includes individuals with Asperger's disorder and mild autism. A plan for clinical interventions in a school-based program is presented.

Shrestha Bhattarai Jamuna The KAP Level of Female Adolescents on SRH in Rural Sri Lanka

This book provides detail information about the KAP level of female adolescents on SRH in Rural Communities of Srilanka. It is of high interest to get to know the Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) level and health seeking behavior of adolescents and to see how they deal with the respective health problems, particularly in rural Sri Lanka. The lack of adequate information sources, self awareness among adolescents and access to services in the community are the main determinants for the low KAP level among adolescents with regard to RH-related issues. The unavailability of specific ARH service centers were found to be one of the main factors affecting adolescents' health service seeking behavior in these areas. Similarly, doubt of breaking confidentiality when visiting the facility and receiving services were prevailing. This is another discouraging factor for Adolescents' SRH seeking practice. Due to the unavailability of friendly health services, constantly existing traditional beliefs and social norms and the lack of sensitivity toward SRH among parents, adolescents are being discouraged to visit HF.

The intent is to enable a program director to plan with a team consisting of an internalevaluator and program staff, a systematic and rigorous study of the program (processes, products, organizationaldynamics, etc.) including the gathering and analysis of information that is context-sensitive, and connected to anargument and justification for descriptive, causal, and practice-useful claims. It is useful for a program director tocontract with an evaluator. It is specific to the field of undergraduateresearch experience while being useful for other fields. It places strongemphasis on how to find and specify evaluation questions that yieldinformation that has high leverage for program improvement anddemonstrating the effectiveness and worth of the program. Paris S. Strom, Robert D. Strom Adolescents In The Internet Age. Teaching And Learning From Them, 2nd Edition

A volume in Lifespan LearningSeries Editors Paris S. Strom, Auburn Universityand Robert D. Strom, Arizona State UniversityTeaching adolescents and learning from them is the paradigm elaborated throughout this secondedition of Adolescents in the Internet Age. The premise is based upon four assumptions: (1) Adolescentshave unique experiences that qualify them as the most credible source on what growing up is like in the currentenvironment; (2) Adolescents are more competent than many adults with tools of technology that willbe needed for learning in the future; (3) Adolescents and adults can support mutual development by adoptingthe concept of reciprocal learning; and (4) The common quest of adolescents to gain adult identity couldbe attained before employment.Expectations are the theme for every chapter. The reason expectations are so important is becausethey influence goals, determine priorities, and are used to evaluate progress and achievements of individualsand institutions. When teacher expectations correspond with the abilities and interests of students, achievement and satisfaction are common outcomes. In contrast, if teachers expect too little, student potentialcan be undermined. There is also concern if expectations that students have for themselves surpass their abilities. This occurs if teachers do notinform students about their deficits. Multitasking, doing too many things at the same time, detracts from productivity. Sharing accountability dependsupon complimentary...

Between good intentions and great results lies a program theory—not just a list of tasks but a vision of what needs to happen, and how. Now widely used in government and not-for-profit organizations, program theory provides a coherent picture of how change occurs and how to improve performance. Purposeful Program Theory shows how to develop, represent, and use program theory thoughtfully and strategically to suit your particular situation, drawing on the fifty-year history of program theory and the authors' experiences over more than twenty-five years. «From needs assessment to intervention design, from implementation to outcomes evaluation, from policy formulation to policy execution and evaluation, program theory is paramount. But until now no book has examined these multiple uses of program theory in a comprehensive, understandable, and integrated way. This promises to be a breakthrough book, valuable to practitioners, program designers, evaluators, policy analysts, funders, and scholars who care about understanding why an intervention works or doesn't work.» —Michael Quinn Patton, author, Utilization-Focused Evaluation «Finally, the definitive guide to evaluation using program theory! This book presents the principles and techniques of program specialization – a general method to make programs faster (and possibly smaller) when some inputs can be known in advance. As an illustration, it describes the architecture of Tempo, an offline program specializer for C that can also specialize code at runtime, and provides figures for concrete applications in various domains. Technical details address issues related to program analysis precision, value reification, incomplete program specialization, strategies to exploit specialized program, incremental specialization, and data specialization. The book, that targets both researchers and software engineers, also opens scientific and industrial perspectives.

Gain a greater awareness of the processes involved in the dissemination of evidence-based interventions, as well as existing supports that help disseminate and sustain them. Many interventions that aim to help children and adolescents are found to be efficacious every year, but program developers are often not equipped with the skills, knowledge, or tools to understand how to scale up a program or sustain it after the initial funding. Consumers (e.g., service providers, who are consumers of interventions), on the other hand, often do not understand all that goes into implementing and scaling up an intervention. This special issue: introduces readers to the problem, discusses some of the challenges with disseminating programs, and presents various supports that exist which can help scale up and sustain interventions. The authors’ goal is to promote the field of dissemination science by encouraging the sharing of successes and challenges. This is the 149th volume in this Jossey-Bass series New Directions for Child and Adolescent Development. Its mission is to provide scientific and scholarly presentations on cutting edge issues and concepts in this subject area. Each volume focuses on a specific new direction or research topic and is edited by experts from that field.

For thousands of years, religion has been a key element of human societies. Wheneverwe, as educators, exclude or minimize religion's vast role in society, we leave out alarge part of our world's shared history. This is a serious act of educational omission, even neglect, on the part of our nation's public middle and secondary schools, particularly when adolescents are so ready to engage in meaningful conversation aboutthe world that surrounds them. Our book's central purpose is to provide middle-leveland high school teachers with the necessary background knowledge and pedagogicalskills necessary to help adolescents become religiously literate learners and citizens.Currently, there is no text like ours on the market that both covers a number of worldreligions, and presents concrete recommendations for teaching and learning thismaterial. Our book is meant to educate the following audiences: teacher educators,middle-level and high school teachers in all content areas, administrators, schoolboards, and parents. For us, educating for religious literacy is all about bringing adolescents into the 21st century of teeming religiousand spiritual diversity-a long-neglected component of the multicultural curriculum in public schools. With research-based findings, engaging examples, and extensive lists of resources, Ivey and Fisher encourage readers to*Reexamine the materials, experiences, and expectations of the English/language arts classroom;*Use strategies to improve literacy in all the content areas and seek alternatives to the traditional textbook;*Make independent reading an important part of students’ ongoing literacy development;*Design and use interventions that really work for struggling students; and*Consider the schoolwide elements—professional development, peer coaching, leadership, and assessment—that should be in place to support teachers and students.Essential questions provide the focus for each chapter, and Quality Indicators for Secondary Literacy help readers gauge where they are on the continuum of providing a meaningful literacy experience for students. Seth T. Blakeman, Anthony R. Gibbs, Jeyanthan Jeyasingam Arming America at War a Model for Rapid Defense Acquisition in Time of War (PB)

This book follows the evolution of a model for quick and efficient national defense war fighting asset acquisition during time of war. It documents the case of a critically important war fighting acquisition program from initial needs identification and program start in 2006 through production and fielding in the period 2007-2010. The analysis focuses on the entire process of acquisition and contracting from concept development through getting the weapons system into action in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere. The Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles program (MRAP) is a rapid acquisition program procured within the context of the US Department of Defense's Acquisition Management and Joint Capabilities Integration and Development System (JCIDS) framework. The analysis in this book answers the following question: What are the key factors that explain the success of the MRAP program, with success defined as meeting program objectives and warfighter needs? In addition, this book addresses the critical trade-offs made within the MRAP program to develop it rapidly, and some of the potential long-term impacts of these decisions, both positive and negative, for rapid defense asset acquisition in time of war.

Maggie McCarty, Congressional Research Service Introduction to Public Housing

"Public housing" is often used as a generic term to refer to all publicly assisted housing, but the term "public housing" actually refers to a specific federal program. Created in 1937, the low-rent public housing program was the first major federal rental housing assistance program. The program initially subsidized the construction, and later the ongoing operation and maintenance, of multifamily rental housing properties for low-income families. While public housing is a federally created and funded program, the properties are owned and managed at the local level by quasi-governmental public housing authorities (PHAs) under contract with the federal government. Given this unique federal-local relationship, the program is governed in part by federal rules and regulations and in part by policies set at the local level.

It is the stage when the urge of life reaches its highest peak. Accidents, Natural death and conflicts are creating generations of orphaned children. In addition the loss of a parent, orphaned children may face many hardships during their adolescence including decline in health, nutrition and psychological wellbeing. The number of children estimated to be orphaned due to all causes is estimated to be between 143 million and 210 million (UNICEF, 2012). Children and adolescents in particular are at increased risk for unresolved or complicated bereavement because of their development, vulnerability and emotional dependency. The purpose of the present investigation was to examine the differences in self-concept, mental health and academic achievement of orphan and non-orphan adolescents. The study adds to the existing literature and will become a guideline for researchers, educators, administrators and counselors to guide the students in a proper way and to frame the suitable educational environment where the adolescents can be accommodated and their self-concept, mental health and academic achievement may improve.

Developing healthy sexual behaviors is critical to adolescents’ wellbeing. While more emphasis has been on negative outcomes, there are broad positive implications for physical health, mental health, intimate relationships, and identity development. To fully understand the impact, we need to understand both. In addition, the impact of sexual behavior is not universal, but may differ based on individuals’ demographic, relational, contextual, and attitudinal factors. This volume provides a framework for understanding the complex role of sexual behavior in adolescents’ lives, with a specific focus on the roles of sexual minority status, internet-based sexual experiences, relationship context, and sexual learning through formal and informal sex education in determining the outcomes of sexual behavior. It provides: A nuanced, multidimensional understanding of the role of sexual behavior in shaping adolescents’ development and well-being Important directions for future research Recommendations for sexuality education, prevention, and intervention programs. This is the 144th volume in this Jossey-Bass series New Directions for Child and Adolescent Development. Its mission is to provide scientific and scholarly presentations on cutting edge issues and concepts in this subject area. Each volume focuses on a specific new direction or research topic and is edited by experts from that field.

Helga Druxes The Feminization of Dr. Faustus. Female Identity Quests from Stendhal to Morgner

While the decline of the male hero in nineteenth- and twentieth-century literature is usually studied in isolation, Druxes uses a major manifestation of this phenomenon-the failing power of the Faust myth-as an interpretive lens through which to illuminate the corresponding rise in the viability of female Faustian heroes or would-be heroes. Her study of the female Faust figure in the realist novels of Stendhal, Gauthier, Keller, James, and the contemporary writer Morgner is further unusual in that she carries out her analyses both against the background of the sociohistorical factors conditioning these female figures and with reference to the mutual interaction of plot and novel form.Since nineteenth-century writers make female subjectivity the arena in which the conflicts of male subjecthood are debated, their attempts to create female versions of the heroic quest for self-knowledge speak not only to the crisis of the male model but also to the crisis of the realistic novel. Using psychoanalytic theory and French feminist and deconstructionist theory, Helga Druxes shows how the female Faustian quest for worldly knowledge and subjecthood develops a new concept of identity that takes its social constructedness into account, and she demonstrates some of the transgressive narrative strategies that male and female writers have employed, embodying their dissent not only in the creation of a female Faust but in their visions of an authentic female desire for selfhood and socially r...
