Financing R&D within the Triple Helix model

As companies are expanding their R&D activities establishing themselves on new markets, they are also encountering opportunities and obligations. How they take advantage of the opportunities and manage the obligations will somehow depend on how they conduct their R&D activities. The existing concepts about innovation processes suggest the need for financial support and more specifically the financing in the early stages of innovation in order to conduct the process. But what they suggest and what is really being carried out differ, whereas this need is not always met. This study aims to bring the structure of the financial support mechanisms within a Brazilian context, exemplifying how MNCs within the Triple Helix established in Brazil can reach financial funding in order to continue developing their R&D activities.

Financial Inclusion & Economic Development

Financial development enhances human development, and access to financial services makes a positive impact on people's lives particularly poor people. In addition, financial development reduces income inequality and boosts incomes. Over the last few decades, policymakers have considered financial sector reforms that promote financial inclusion. This paper attempts to show how financial inclusion is correlated with standard measures of economic development and economic well-being. To this end, we first measure the extent of financial inclusion by comparing economies and regions over time. Then, using this index of financial inclusion, we identify the factors associated with financial inclusion using a simple econometric model. This book, provides a new index of financial inclusion for Turkey and EU and this measurement has been developed to allow for comparison of other EU countries with Turkey in terms of financial inclusion and how “improved” financial inclusion can impact Turkey and EU member countries.

Europeanization of Regional Development Policies of Turkey

The efforts of Turkey towards catching the material welfare of the West and transferring the western values into the society under the name of “westernization”, “contemporization” or “modernization” have a 150-year old background. These efforts aim at a concrete objective in the form of being an EU member today. This study discussing the Europeanization of regional development policies addresses the EU membership process of Turkey with a more different point of view than a traditional one. It attempts to highlight that the process doesn't consist of performing the tasks set by the Union and expecting financial assistance in return. It suggests that regional instabilities within the country cannot be eliminated through only performing what the Union remarks, but rather, the solution can be found through mutual negotiations and sharing of tasks.

Bearing this in mind and implementing it as means of preemptive actions to increase management and conservation plan efficiency, while reducing collateral damage to non-focal species, this book researches the implications for the conservation of iconic creatures: crocodiles. Assuming that the more similar two species are, the more likely they are to compete, the book negotiates a natural state ratio between sympatric crocodilians using skull shape comparison. It presents a step-by-step process through the basics of taking photographs of skulls to the mathematics of theoretical ecology in order to define previously unconsidered applications of morphometrics within ecological conservation. Along the way, it also highlights landmarks of interest within crocodilian skull morphology and concerns with currently used conservation methods. The book was written for anyone actively involved in the conservation of crocodilians and those pursuing applicability within sciences.

Teachers’ Participation In Professional Development Activities

The results of the Teaching and Learning International Survey reflected that teachers’ rate of participation in professional development (PD) activities in the 23 participating countries was 89% on average within the 18 months prior to the survey. However, the participation rate of Turkish teachers in PD activities was 74.8%. In fact, the participation rate of Turkish teachers in PD was the lowest among all participating countries (TALIS, 2009). Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between factors (internal [personal] and external [environmental]) and teachers’ participation in PD programs in Turkey. After analyzing the collected data, the researcher found that although age, teachers’ attitudes towards PD activities, time, funding, and colleague influence affect teachers’ participation in PD activities in statistically significant ways; gender, teaching experience, grade level of teaching, education level, teachers’ self-efficacy, principal, and school culture do not affect their participation in these activities in Turkey. The findings of this study inform policy makers regarding methods for increasing teacher participation rates in PD activities.

For the past two decades significant attention has been given to the protection of lemurs and other rare animals, along with their habitat, which collectively make up the rich biodiversity of Madagascar. Various conservation approaches have been tried, including those integrated with development activities, as well as landscape management. Despite these efforts, biodiversity losses continue, calling into question the effectiveness of the activities undertaken. Using a political ecology framework, this book explores reasons for the continued erosion of biodiversity through the identification and analysis of social actors vying for access to natural resources. The application of this framework reveals tensions between social actors and the maldistribution of power among them. Also, the conventional wisdom driving conservation actions appears to be false. Such wisdom, perpetrated by discourse, lacks understanding of livelihood patterns and needs of local people. However, endowed with political power and financial influence, this wisdom dominates other forms of knowledge, leading to conservation efforts that perpetuate a status quo, resulting in continued elimination of biodiversity.

Based on the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners the current estimate of financial irregularities suggests a significant amount of revenue is lost because of fraud. The issue of financial accountability is not confined to for-profit entities but is also applicable to not-for-profit organizations such as churches. The news of fraudulent activities and scandals in religious institutions has increased the need for effective accounting standards and practices in churches. Not-for-profit organizations are not mandated under federal laws for financial reporting hence churches have been utilizing undesirable accounting practices over the past decade. Research on the financial affairs of churches is limited because of a lack of federal mandates of churches. Research has shown the need for more financial accountability among churches.

This study examines the relationship between popular support for the Kurdish Worker’s Party (PKK), which is an ethnic insurgent and terrorist organization mainly operating in Turkey, and its terrorist activities during the pre-and post-election periods in Turkey . Popular support has been measured through popular votes for the political party affiliated with the PKK in 1999 general, 2004 local and 2007 general elections. Two leading theories of social movements, Resource Mobilization Theory (RMT) and Relative Deprivation Theory (RD), were used as theoretical approach. The study uses secondary data and constructs a longitudinal design. An advanced statistical analysis technique, a generalized hierarchical linear model: time nested within subjects (or GHLM repeated measures) was employed in this study. Findings indicate that popular support is positively related to terrorist attacks of the PKK in Turkey. More popular support for the insurgent leads to more terrorist attacks.

Financial Intermediation

The book analyses the role financial intermediation plays in the economic growth of Nigeria. Globally, activities of banks reflect their unique role as the engine of financial growth which can ultimately lead to real economic growth. The importance of the financial sector of an economy in stimulating economic growth is widely recognized especially in developmental economics. Financial intermediation is the very core function of banks which could translate to this growth. It is an area in which banks have the professional expertise of matching the interest of depositors with those of borrowers by providing a coordinated interface for the two groups. This implies that where there is no intermediation, individuals and corporate bodies that want to invest in productive activities would have to accumulate enough funds over a long time to be able to meet their fixed and variable costs of investments. This book therefore analyses the Financial Interrelation Ratios (FIR) of the Nigerian financial intermediaries and highlights the catalytic role they can play at engineering financial development which in the long run could bring about the expected economic development of Nigeria.

Can new market mechanism save the Amazon Forest?

Today, in the whole world, 80 % of all forest areas are publicly owned. Forests being seen as a major provider of public services (watershed services, carbon sequestration, salination control, landscape beauty, etc.), it is generally admitted that the State is responsible for ensuring the conservation of these large biodiversity-rich areas. Yet, ownership and management of forests by communities, individuals and private companies is on the rise. Market-based mechanism are being developed to encourage lower-cost approaches for securing forest conservation beyond traditional publicly protected areas. Instead of direct land purchasing, a cheaper option is to pay landowners to manage their assets so as to achieve biodiversity or species conservation. The so-called ?Payments for environmental services? are thus promising instruments to reconcile two contradictory issues affecting the resource-based developing economies which host highly biodiverse zones: economic developement and biodiversity conservation. This book hence proposes to understand the limits of one of these promising instruments, Tradeable Development Rights, for the conservation of the Brazilian Amazon forest.

Ecology and socio-economy has been crucial for biodiversity conservation all around the globe. The one-horned rhinoceros is also witnessing serious threats within its habitats. In Chitwan National Park, Nepal, rhino population shows dramatic fluctuation. Few years back it continued to decline because of widespread poaching. The book tries to argue that not only the marginalized households but also the well-to-do households are susceptible to poaching. This book highlights that people are involved in these activities due to three areas of conflict: resource availability, livelihood and biodiversity conservation. Buffer zone management committees, who receive 50% of the Park revenue, have a greater role in rhino conservation by enabling these poorer households to earn through any or all activities. This is a priority for buffer zone committees so that their livelihood is enhanced and survival of the rhino is less threatened. This book is expected to make constructive contribution towards park and its buffer zone management. It can also be a useful resource for further research and investigations.

Protected areas in Kenya constitute 7% of the total land area with over 75% of wildlife in the country being found on private or communal land. Facing a range of development challenges with limited resources, one of the greatest challenge in Kenya is sustaining economic development with biodiversity conservation. Covering three categories of protected areas under different governance types and management objectives (government, community and private), the research examined the general issues of how local communities in Kenya have embraced different biodiversity conservation strategies and whether support for a particular conservation strategy is primarily a function of their experiences with biodiversity decline or their relationship with the conservation authorities. The findings suggest that local people appreciate the role of protected areas in conserving biodiversity and its values, but with some resentment towards some management activities of the protected area regulators. Negative attitudes were attributed to perceived problems of living next to the protected areas while support for the management activities was associated with perceived benefits to the local people.

The Financial Instability Hypothesis of Hyman P. Minsky

The book deals with the financial instability hypothesis of Hyman P. Minsky and its application to the current financial crisis. The first part of the work summarizes the hypothesis and mentions works elaborating the hypothesis. The second part applies the hypothesis to the current financial crisis. The whole book refers to the general discussion about relations of the Minsky’s hypothesis to the current financial crisis and to the fall of the insurance company AIG Corporation. The second part concludes that many relevant parts of Minsky’s hypothesis can be applied to the recent financial crisis but important differences of the current financial system to the system in Minsky’s times should be aware of. There are two most important differences: changes in risk management and new financial instruments. At the end, the book discusses the implications of these differences for applicability of the hypothesis on the current financial crisis. It regards the fact that the recent financial crisis is caused by rational behaviour of economic agents and not by exogenous forces as the most important lesson to learn from the financial instability hypothesis of Hyman P. Minsky.

Autonomy: Theory and Implementation

Different approaches have been discussed in order to find a solution to Kurdish question in Turkey. Autonomy is one of the popular examples of them in question. In particular, the Basque Autonomy in Spain is shown as an example to implement such a model in Turkey. Despite the proposed Basque model, it is quite difficult to find relevant scientific studies that compare the Kurdish question with Basque cases under the theory of autonomy. The scope of this book is to compare the Basque Autonomous Region in Spain with the Kurdish case in Turkey within the theory of autonomy. In this perspective, it is aimed to analyse whether the Basque Autonomous model can be implemented for the solution of the Kurdish question in Turkey. Therefore, this book tries to fill the gap for researchers, academicians and the people interested in the subject.

Mode for Planning Wildlife Conservation in Large Landscapes

A single-resource volume of information on the most current and effective techniques of wildlife modeling, Models for Planning Wildlife Conservation in Large Landscapes is appropriate for students and researchers alike. The unique blend of conceptual, methodological, and application chapters discusses research, applications and concepts of modeling and presents new ideas and strategies for wildlife habitat models used in conservation planning. The book makes important contributions to wildlife conservation of animals in several ways: (1) it highlights historical and contemporary advancements in the development of wildlife habitat models and their implementation in conservation planning; (2) it provides practical advice for the ecologist conducting such studies; and (3) it supplies directions for future research including new strategies for successful studies.Intended to provide a recipe for successful development of wildlife habitat models and their implementation in conservation planning, the book could be used in studying wildlife habitat models, conservation planning, and management techniques. Additionally it may be a supplemental text in courses dealing with quantitative assessment of wildlife populations. Additionally, the length of the book would be ideal for graduate student seminar course.Using wildlife habitat models in conservation planning is of considerable interest to wildlife biologists. With ever tightening budgets for wildlife research and planning activities, there is a growing need to use computer methods. Use of simulation models represents the single best alternative. However, it is imperative that these techniques be described in a single source. Moreover, biologists should be made aware of alternative modeling techniques. It is also important that practical guidance be provided to biologists along with a demonstration of utility of these procedures. Currently there is little guidance in the wildlife or natural resource planning literature on how best to incorporate wildlife planning activities, particularly community-based approaches. Now is the perfect time for a synthestic publication that clearly outlines the concepts and available methods, and illustrates them.KEY FEATURES:* Only single resource book of information not only on various wildlife modeling techniques, but also with practical guidance on the demonstrated utility of each based on real-world conditions.* Provides concepts, methods and applications for wildlife ecologists and others within a GIS context.* Written by a team of subject-area experts
