The main focus in this work is lossless compression algorithms based on context modeling using tree structure.We are going to compare CALIC, GCT-I algorithms to theJPEG2000 standard algorithm which will be considered the reference of comparison.This work includes research on how to modify CALIC algorithm in continuous-tone mode by truncating tails of the error histogram which may lead to improve CALIC compression performance.Also, we are going to propose a modification to CALIC in binarymode by eliminating error feedback mechanism. As when any pixel to be encoded has a different grey level than any of the neighboring pixels, CALIC triggers an escape sequence that switches the algorithm from binary mode to continuous-tone mode. Which means in this case the pixel will be treated as if it was in continuous-tone region. This minor modification should improve CALIC performance in binary images.Finally, we are going to discuss the GCT-I on medical images and compare results to the JPEG2000 standard.

Noise reduction is an important step for development of any sophisticated algorithms in computer vision and image processing. A tradeoff between the removed noise and the blur in the image always exists. The capability of the wavelets to give detail spatial-frequency information is the main reason for the use of wavelets. This property promises a possibility for better discrimination between the noise and the real data. Successful exploitation of the wavelet transform might reduce the blurring effect or even overcome it completely. Object tracking is a problem of estimating the positions and other relevant information of moving objects in the sequences of image video. The main difficulties in reliable tracking of moving objects include: rapid appearance changes caused by image noise and interaction between multiple objects. In a long sequence of image video, if the dynamics of the moving object is known, prediction can be made about the positions of the object in a particular frame. This information can be combined with the actual image observation to achieve more robust results. We have explored a possibility to use wavelet transform for object tracking.

Data compression is one of the important topics in computer science that is concerned in reducing the size of data. There are many techniques for data compression used for specific type(s) of data and some other used for general purpose. In this research, the RGB image has been transformed into YIQ color transform, then the I&Q band have been sampled down in order to get effective compression. To break the long encoding time of FIC, many enhanced methods are applied to traditional FIC based on using zero-mean method, in which a mean of range block is used instead of offset parameter which simplify and speed up the encoding time; Also reduce a domain pool by filtration a domain pool from those block with high entropy value, in addition to discard domain blocks which have some distance ratio from matching process. Another speeding up technique is proposed in this research based on suggesting symmetry predictor to reduce isometric trails from 8 to 1 trail. The work proves to have a good result in compression ratio and quality of reconstructed image.

Hyperspectral imaging is a powerful technique and has been used in a large number of applications. However, it generates massively large image data sets. Access and transport of these data sets will stress existing processing, storage and transmission capabilities. A new embedded, block-based, wavelet transform coding algorithm of low complexity is developed for hyperspectral image compression: Three-Dimensional Set Partitioned Embedded bloCK (3D-SPECK). 3D-SPECK efficiently encodes 3D volumetric hyperspectral image data by exploiting the dependencies in all dimensions. It can generate either SNR scalable or resolution scalable embedded bitstreams. It can also generate ROI retrievable bitstreams.This book introduces 3D-SPECK and describes its technical details. It is demonstrated that 3D-SPECK has excellent performance on hyperspectral image compression.

The objective of this book is to propose a new algorithm for obtaining a stable face detection and recognition techniques that have the capabilities of detecting the face with different poses and under different conditions. To obtain this stability, a hybrid of Feature-Based and Template Matching approaches are used in a new manner and under different stages, robust image segmentation, filtering steps and features detection using Feature-Based approach which can work in real-time with minimal training in contrast to other approaches such as image-based approach. This work has advantages over other approaches flow out from the ability of the proposed algorithm on detecting faces with different poses (Left, Right and Frontal) in varying illumination conditions and different races. This is done by merging some already defined algorithms such as Template Matching with new proposed algorithm to strength the detection process and obtaining robust algorithm with good results. Experimental results show that the proposed method is robust under a wide range of lighting conditions, different poses and different races.The proposed method gives a correct detection rate reach 94%.

The influence of hardwood in the tension and compression zone, in terms of strength and stiffness is evaluated. The basis of evaluation consists of determining the behaviour of beams with various combinations of hardwood solely in the tension zone along with beams with hardwood in the tension and compression zone. The influence of different amount of hardwood for both cases is studied my means of experimental and analytical methods.Experimental data attained by performing bending tests are evaluated for different combinations made from spruce and oak. By comparing the experimental and analytical data an increase in the strength and stiffness in various combinations is observed and potrayed which varies based on different wood species.

With the growth in multimedia technology, demand for high speed real time image compression system has also increased. JPEG 2000 still image compression standard is developed to cater such application requirements. It offers numerous advantages over traditional JPEG standard. The key algorithms adopted in this standard are discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and embedded block coding with optimized truncation (EBCOT). Both the algorithms are computation intensive and when implemented on general purpose processor, they are unsuitable for real time applications. Therefore, to meet the timing constraints imposed by the real time systems dedicated VLSI implementation of these algorithms is imperative. EBCOT is a two-tier coder. Tier-1 is a context based adaptive arithmetic coder and Tier-2 performs layered bit stream formation. Tier-1 is further partitioned into block coder and MQ coder. To a novice, it is difficult to grasp the operating principle of the block coder and hence it is difficult to realize high speed JPEG 2000 architecture. The author has made an attempt to demystify these concepts and presented a simplified VLSI architecture of the block coder in this book.

This paper mainly aimed to evaluate the performance of a high level Histogram of Oriented Gradients (i.e., HOG) calculations on labeled image instead of low level block processing on the entire image in pattern recognition and specifically investigate its effectiveness on road sign identification. It was shown that by calculating HOG on the contours of segmented image, not only the final results are promising, but also the amount of processing is significantly reduced and a higher speed is gained.

A systematic exploration of both classic and contemporary algorithms in blind source separation with practical case studies The book presents an overview of Blind Source Separation, a relatively new signal processing method. Due to the multidisciplinary nature of the subject, the book has been written so as to appeal to an audience from very different backgrounds. Basic mathematical skills (e.g. on matrix algebra and foundations of probability theory) are essential in order to understand the algorithms, although the book is written in an introductory, accessible style. This book offers a general overview of the basics of Blind Source Separation, important solutions and algorithms, and in-depth coverage of applications in image feature extraction, remote sensing image fusion, mixed-pixel decomposition of SAR images, image object recognition fMRI medical image processing, geochemical and geophysical data mining, mineral resources prediction and geoanomalies information recognition. Firstly, the background and theory basics of blind source separation are introduced, which provides the foundation for the following work. Matrix operation, foundations of probability theory and information theory basics are included here. There follows the fundamental mathematical model and fairly new but relatively established blind source separation algorithms, such as Independent Component Analysis (ICA) and its improved algorithms (Fast ICA, Maximum Likelihood ICA, Overcomplete ICA, Kernel ICA, Flexible ICA, Non-negative ICA, Constrained ICA, Optimised ICA). The last part of the book considers the very recent algorithms in BSS e.g. Sparse Component Analysis (SCA) and Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF).
