Kapute Fanuel Quality . Risk Assessment of Whole Fresh Lake Malawi Tilapia (Chambo)

Fish is a major source of dietary animal protein to most people in Malawi. One of the most widely accepted and consumed fish species in the country is the Lake Malawi Tilapia locally known as "Chambo". Fresh fish are transported from the lake to distant markets preserved in ice and often in poor storage conditions, and sold in the open due to lack of storage facilities such as refrigerators and cold rooms. As a highly perishable commodity, safety and quality awareness is of paramount importance to fish processors but also safeguarding consumer health. This work assessed quality of fresh Chambo by estimating its shelf life when stored in ice then assessing its quality in local and super markets in Malawi. Findings suggest that Chambo has a longer shelf life stored in ice (more than 14 days). This is advantageous to small scale fresh fish sellers and processors especially from rural areas in Malawi who solely depend on ice as the only affordable way of preserving fresh fish. Quality of fresh Chambo from super markets was no better than fish sold at local markets underpinning the importance of quality and safety checks at every stage.

Scientific Study from the year 2017 in the subject Guidebooks - Nutrition, Food, Drinking, , language: English, abstract: The research questions were: What are the major illnesses the community suffers from? How is the nutritional status of that community? Is there any relation between nutritional statuses with present illness? The study is conducted keeping in mind the following objectives: to assess the nutritional status of the adult people in the selected area; to determine the dietary pattern of the respondents; to co-relate the clinical conditions with their dietary pattern; and to formulate alternative ways for the good health of adults aged 50-70 years.Malnutrition is common among people aged above 50 years in India. The prevalence of malnutrition among the elderly was found to be 11.6% and the percentage at risk of malnutrition was 46%. Keeping in mind the fact that people from other part of Kamrup district were already suffering from malnutrition and hence even in Dispur zone, Kamrup district, there was every possibility of people suffering malnutrition but no such data or study were published or discussed so far for this age group of people. Therefore, in order to make elderly people aware about their biological status, in terms of nutrition and to improve their quality of life there was a need of such research considering their nutritional status and its deleterious effect on their health and wellbeing.

Community colleges serve the lion's share of the nation'spostsecondary students. In fact, 40% of all undergraduate students are enrolled in community colleges, these students account for nearly 30% of all STEM undergraduatemajors in postsecondary institutions. These students serve as a core element of the STEM pipeline into four-year colleges and universities via the community collegetransfer function. Moreover, community colleges are the primary postsecondary access point for non-traditional students, including students of color, first-generation,low-income, and adult students. This is a particularly salient point given that these populations are sordidly underrepresented among STEM graduates and in the STEMworkforce.Increasing success among these populations can contribute significantly to advancing the nation's interests in STEM. As such, the community college is situated as animportant site for innovative practices that have strong implications for bolstering the nation's production and sustenance of a STEM labor force. In Work, Identity, and Legal Status at Rome, Sandra R. Joshel examines Roman commemorative inscriptions from the first and second centuries A.D. to determine ways in which slaves, freed slaves, and unprivileged freeborn citizens used work to frame their identities. The inscriptions indicate the significance of work-as a source of community, a way to reframe the conditions of legal status, an assertion of activity against upper-class passivity, and a standard of assessment based on economic achievement rather than birth. Drawing on sociology, anthropology, ethnography, and women's history, this thoroughly documented volume illuminates the dynamics of work and slavery at Rome.Sandra R. The Dirichlet distribution appears in many areas of application, which include modelling of compositional data, Bayesian analysis, statistical genetics, and nonparametric inference. This book provides a comprehensive review of the Dirichlet distribution and two extended versions, the Grouped Dirichlet Distribution (GDD) and the Nested Dirichlet Distribution (NDD), arising from likelihood and Bayesian analysis of incomplete categorical data and survey data with non-response. The theoretical properties and applications are also reviewed in detail for other related distributions, such as the inverted Dirichlet distribution, Dirichlet-multinomial distribution, the truncated Dirichlet distribution, the generalized Dirichlet distribution, Hyper-Dirichlet distribution, scaled Dirichlet distribution, mixed Dirichlet distribution, Liouville distribution, and the generalized Liouville distribution. Key Features: Presents many of the results and applications that are scattered throughout the literature in one single volume. Looks at the most recent results such as survival function and characteristic function for the uniform distributions over the hyper-plane and simplex; distribution for linear function of Dirichlet components; estimation via the expectation-maximization gradient algorithm and application; etc. Likelihood and Bayesian analyses of incomplete categorical data by using GDD, NDD, and the generalized Dirichlet distribution are illustrated in detail through the EM algorithm and data augmentation structure. Presents a systematic exposition of the Dirichlet-multinomial distribution for multinomial data with extra variation which cannot be handled by the multinomial distribution. S-plus/R codes are featured along with practical examples illustrating the methods. Practitioners and researchers working in areas such as medical science, biological science and social science will benefit from this book.

This book is the first comprehensive and methodologically rigorous analysis of earthquake occurrence. Models based on the theory of the stochastic multidimensional point processes are employed to approximate the earthquake occurrence pattern and evaluate its parameters. The Author shows that most of these parameters have universal values. These results help explain the classical earthquake distributions: Omori's law and the Gutenberg-Richter relation. The Author derives a new negative-binomial distribution for earthquake numbers, instead of the Poisson distribution, and then determines a fractal correlation dimension for spatial distributions of earthquake hypocenters. The book also investigates the disorientation of earthquake focal mechanisms and shows that it follows the rotational Cauchy distribution. These statistical and mathematical advances make it possible to produce quantitative forecasts of earthquake occurrence. In these forecasts earthquake rate in time, space, and focal mechanism orientation is evaluated.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1885 edition. Excerpt: ... FISHING IN THE GREAT LAKES. A large proportion of the inhabitants residing upon the shores of Lake Superior, Michigan and Huron, are fishermen by profession, earning their living, not in the manner of the disciples of Isaac Walton, but by the use of pound nets. The ordinary angler when he casts Lis line in these great waters looks and feels exatperatingly diminutive by the side of these wholesale fish butcheries. It has been estimated that Lake Superior alone produces annually over two million white-fish and trout, say nothing of the other varieties taken, which would certainly number together another million. The labor and capital required in managing these fisheries is far greater than is generally supposed. The " plants " are usually made in deep water, sometimes to the depth of eighty or ninety feet. The places selected for planting pound nets is at the edge of banks or shoals where the water rapidly deepens. Here the fish rise and seek the edge of the shoal in quest of small fish, on which they feed. The "pot" of the net is shaped like a heart, and wings are extended from the larger end of the heart, where there is an orifice for the fish to enter In groping for the edge of the bank, the fish strike the wings, and, feeling along the...

In recent years, a convergence of several forces—increased legislative involvement in higher education, governmental and philanthropic pressure to increase postsecondary degree and certificate production, and fiscal belt-tightening at colleges and universities across America—has resulted in efforts to significantly reform community college-to-university transfer and articulation processes. One increasingly popular method of reform is the implementation of transfer associate degrees: statewide pathways or degree programs that allow students to both earn an associate degree from a community college and transfer seamlessly into a state university with junior status. This volume of New Directions for Community Colleges outlines the elements of effective transfer associate degrees and explores their implementation in six states. This is the 160th volume of this Jossey-Bass quarterly report series. Essential to the professional libraries of presidents, vice presidents, deans, and other leaders in today's open-door institutions, New Directions for Community Colleges provides expert guidance in meeting the challenges of their distinctive and expanding educational mission.

Ambaye Degefa Social Organization and Status of Occupational Groups

There has been little interest in studying the occupational groups in Ethiopia, in particular the woodworkers who are usually referred as "Fuga" by the host societies. A few attempts made by some scholars reflect only the past prejudices and stereotypes attached to them. In the past members of this occupational groups lived at the bottom of the economic ladder in harsh and despotic social environment. Their status was ambiguous because on the one and they were discriminated against and at the same time they were badly needed. This book, the result of anthropological study, reveals the actual current social organization and status of the occupational group: the case of woodworkers who refer to themselves as Amarikan, rejecting the term Fuga, and settled in a village called Megnako and Gambela in Woliso district, south-western Shewa in Ethiopia. The book illustrates how social status and socio-economic positions of this community have been altered over time, mainly since their migration to the present living area in the beginning of 1957 and after the 1974 revolution in the country.

Mandi McReynolds, Emily Shields Diving Deep in Community Engagement. A Model for Professional Development

In Summer 2013, a group of practitioner-scholars in higher education community engagement committed to developing a new resource to help guide professional development, career advancement, and unit guidance in the civic and community engagement field. Through a collective process, they developed a framework of competencies for community engagement professionals. These four areas, as outlined in the publication, are Organizational Manager, Institutional Strategic Leader, Field Contributor, and Community Innovator. The purpose of the book is to support strategic professional development and it should be used to help community engagement professionals to reflect on their own practice and growth. This reflective practice should be connected to wider discussions of how campuses can continue to institutionalize civic and community engagement, and the book provides concrete ways for community engagement professionals to link personal vocation to systemic change.

Adam Michael Krause Art as Politics. The Future of Art and Community

The arts originated in the day-to-day activities of human communities. But through the confluence of the culture industry and status-driven high art, the products of artistic activities have become mere commodities and specimens of culture rather than integral elements in the fabric of our everyday life. Art has become disconnected from life. What are the ways in which we can reverse this process? How can we make the arts a powerful force in healthy and vibrant communities? Taking his cues from artists, thinkers, and movements as disparate as John Cage, Joseph Beuys, John Dewey, Social Ecology, and DIY punk rock, Adam Michael Krause offers a bold prescription for the future of art and community.

Casebook of Exemplary Evidence-Informed Programs That Foster Community Participation After Acquired Brain Injury

Acquired brain injury (ABI) describes damage to the brain that occurs after birth, caused by traumatic injurysuch as an accident or fall, or by non-traumatic cause such as substance abuse, stroke, or disease. Today'smedical techniques are improving the survival rate for people of all ages diagnosed with ABI, and currenttrends in rehabilitation are supporting these individuals returning to live, attend school, and work in theircommunities. Yet strategies on the best way of providing community participation vary among rehabilitationexperts. Because many of survivors of ABI do not and will not return to the status quo of their former lives itis important to examine what constitutes best and promisingpractices in this area. This casebook is the world's first compilation of evidence-informed programs that foster communityparticipation for people of all ages with brain injury. With thisreview, we elicited and carefully examined existing programmatic efforts that combineemphasis on the individual, the social, and the service systems in a way that captures community participation as a complex process of interactivechange in the person-environment relationship - programs that do not divorce ABI survivors from their contexts, and where participation effortsfacilitate positive change in the social and political context. We considered community-based programs to be programs where individuals and familiesactively participate in their own therapy (rehabilitation) and take responsibi...

Andrew J Burkemper THE HISTORY OF LAKE HOARE, ANTARCTICA

The McMurdo Dry Valleys region of Antarctica represents one of the harshest, most extreme environments on Earth. Despite these conditions, life still manages to survive in the ice-covered lakes that exist within these valleys. Each of these lakes exhibits a unique and fascinating environment, and Lake Hoare is no exception. This work provides an overview of the modern and historical character of Lake Hoare and the Dry Valleys environment, and also presents the results of new research pertaining to the history of Lake Hoare. This research consisted of collecting and analyzing sediment cores from the lake bottom, and using the results to reconstruct the recent history of Lake Hoare. The goal of this study was to take existing knowledge of the physical, chemical and biological processes currently operating in the modern lake environment and use it to explain observed changes within the sediment core and, thus, the lake in the past. This work presents a new method for reconstructing sediment pore water salinity, new data on the physical and chemical changes within the lake sediment and further insight into existing interpretations of the history of Lake Hoare and Taylor Valley.

The author worked with forest committees in order to study the development issues, needs and priorities of the community; the resources in the community; the community's judgment of the previous and current development projects; and the experience of the community in relation to the development projects. The author used situational analysis, direct and participant observation, as well as two focused group discussions to obtain the data. The participants were members of the forest committees who represent the communities living within the 10km radius from forest boundary. Study findings indicate that there are limited community development projects in the area. These projects cannot adequately meet the needs of the community and cannot sustainably lead to environment conservation. The community largely participated in the development as either casual laborers or self employed community group members. The willingness to participate was influenced by the desire to improve the living conditions, while barriers to participation included perceived corruption, myths about gender, age and development...

Larry Duggins Together

Together: Community as a Means of Grace addresses the concept of community as an avenue to a deeper relationship with God. Using an ecumenical Wesleyan approach, Duggins explores the concept of ""God as community"" to conclude that bringing people together in almost any setting allows them to grow in God's image. He frames this idea using the historical concept of the ""means of grace"": the ordinary ways in which people encounter God.Drawing heavily on the work of the Missional Wisdom Foundation, Duggins begins with a reflection on the community-building aspects of traditional church. He then uses storytelling to introduce four common forms of community: community through work, community through food, community through children's schools and activities, and community through shared recreational activities.Together is intended to help Christian people embrace the freedom to experiment with alternative forms of Christian community. Duggins nudges the missional imagination of people who long for spiritual connection and growth, but for whom traditional church is not the answer. Using a ""yes, and"" approach, he shows that traditional church can empower and stand alongside new forms of community, each of which can act as a means of grace.""We have a deep desire for community and a correspondingly deep thirst for grace. As Larry Duggins develops a practical theology grounded in scripture and Wesleyan tradition, he en...

Larry Lankton Hollowed Ground. Copper Mining and Community Building on Lake Superior, 1840-1990s

In Hollowed Ground, author Larry Lankton tells the story of two copper industries on Lake Superior-native copper mining, which produced about 11 billion pounds of the metal from the 1840s until the late 1960s, and copper sulfide mining, which began in the 1950s and produced another 4.4 billion pounds of copper through the 1990s. In addition to documenting companies and their mines, mills, and smelters, Hollowed Ground is also a community study. It examines the region's population and ethnic mix, which was a direct result of the mining industry, and the companies' paternalistic involvement in community building. While this book covers the history of the entire Lake Superior mining industry, it particularly focuses on the three biggest, most important, and longest-lived companies: Calumet & Hecla, Copper Range, and Quincy. Lankton shows the extent of the companies' influence over their mining locations, as they constructed the houses and neighborhoods of their company towns, set the course of local schools, saw that churches got land to build on, encouraged the growth of commercial villages on the margin of a mine, and even provided pasturage for workers' milk cows and space for vegetable gardens. Lankton also traces the interconnected fortunes of the mining communities and their companies through times of bustling economic growth and periods of decline and closure. Hollowed Ground presents a wealth of images from Upper Michigan's mining towns, reflectin...

This piece of scientific work is of vital importance for those who want to understand and further investigate the temporal variation the chemical characteristics of Lake Ziway - a fresh water lake in the Ethiopian Rift-Valley lakes system. It is devoted to the discussion of variations over years in the salinity and sodicity of the lake. The salinity and sodicity trends are probed in relation to the annual and seasonal variation in the hydro-meteorological factors that determine the chemical characteristics of the lake. It succinctly depicts the causal interrelationship between the temporal level of salinity and sodicity of the lake and the hydro-meteorological factors that govern the lake's chemical characteristics. It summarizes varied historical hydrological, meteorological and hydro-chemical data from previous records and researches to lucidly presents their implication on the temporal variation in the salinity and sodicity of the lake. It finally suggests some recommendations as to how the freshwater nature of the lake can be sustained.

Carmen M Cusack Fish in the Bible. Psychosocial Analysis of Contemporary Meanings, Values, and Effects of Christian Symbolism

Fish in the Bible: Psychosocial Analysis of Contemporary Meanings, Values, and Effects of Christian Symbolism analyzes why and to what end tales and truths about fish presented in the Bible hold water in Christian societies today. Fish in the Bible argues that portraits of fish and fishermen presented in the Bible have been both embraced and rejected by contemporary cultures with primarily Christian constituents (e.g. American culture). This book does not make an ethical argument; rather, it explores manners in which Christians have selectively rejected or accepted depictions and symbols of fish and fishermen. It explores differences between Christian maxims presented in Bible verses and the beliefs and actions of societies operating under Christian moral majorities. Fish in the Bible also considers the evolution of symbolism and metaphors in Christian society using parables and tales found in the Bible.Fish in the Bible works on several specialized topics to argue that, overall, depictions of fish and fishermen in the Bible significantly and subtly shape Christian cultures even when Christians ignore or dismiss the robust ways in which fish and fishermen are characterized and treated in the Bible. Fish serve as a metaphor for God's power, judgment, sin, and fertility; they are used to instill boundaries and standards in practitioners; and sometimes fish are worshiped, demonized, and subjugated. There is no clear or singular message regarding fish or fishermen; and Christ...

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2001 in the subject Sociology - Individual, Groups, Society, , course: Sociology PhD thesis, language: English, abstract: Much scholarly work has centered around community in Newfoundland and Labrador. However, comparatively little work has focused on meanings of community. This thesis compares meanings of community in everyday life for people living in a Southern Shore community on Newfoundland's Avalon Peninsula, with the meanings found in scholarly literature and in government documents produced in association with The Atlantic Groundfish Strategy (TAGS). TAGS was a federal adjustment program responding to the moratoria on groundfish fishing in Atlantic Canada in the 1990s. I draw on Dorothy Smith's feminist theory, which starts from "lived experience" as well as the socioeconomic context of that lived experience as an entry point to illuminating the ideological nature of documents and their links to ruling relations. Smith's discussion of ideology and ruling relations are central to my gender-informed and mediated framework. I explore the contrast between meanings of community in TAGS documents and expert texts looking for lines of fault between these texts and meanings of community in everyday life in a fishing community in Newfoundland.I use as well Smith's notions of resilience and emergent consciousness to demonstrate that the historical oppressive practices of the ruling group are re-mobilized in TA...

Irving Fisher The Theory of Interest as Determined by Impatience to Spend Income and Opportunity to Invest It

2012 Reprint of 1930 Edition. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. This work is an important update and reworking of Fisher's "The Rate of Interest," first published in 1907. Very fundamental changes in the nature of the world economy, principally World War I, war financing, the sensational inflation of the currencies of the combatants, and the remarkable developments in new scientific, industrial and agricultural methods had occurred; all requiring integration into a new theory. Fisher called interest "an index of a community's preference for a dollar of present [income] over a dollar of future income." He labeled his theory of interest the "impatience and opportunity" theory. Interest rates, Fisher postulated, result from the interaction of two forces: the "time preference" people have for capital now, and the investment opportunity principle (that income invested now will yield greater income in the future).

Nancy Fisher's images in Flame Dancer flicker, like the flame in which her personas dance, in a mirror that reflects a montage of past present and future in three dimensions. The darkness against which the characters struggle to fend off death makes experience of her artifice an experience of the dreams in the poets mind. The "hard gemlike flame" burns with the brilliance of artifice as the means to life and the conflict is always with the loss of the spirit that produces the bodiless head of the poet's nightmare. Her poems are an unforgettable and delightful experience. Robert Reid, author of Stories of the Sky-God Nancy Fisher finds the magical within the ordinary, the boundless within the constraints of traditional forms. Again and again, she moves gracefully from quotidian to timeless realms in ways that illuminate each. Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Environmental Sciences, Lund University (Lund University Centre for Sustainability Studies), course: Environmental Studies and Sustainability Science, language: English, abstract: The prevailing view on work excludes unpaid activities like care, individual or community work although they are crucial for economy and everyday life. Because the focus on paid work also leads to both social and environmental unsustainability, work has to be redefined. Cohousing evolved from the belief that through a collective organisation with a specific built and social environment, care work can become appreciated and facilitated. Hence, this thesis examines how cohousing today contributes to an extended view on work through a qualitative analysis of interviews with cohousing experts as well as participant observations of and focus group interviews with two cohouses in Austria and Sweden. The study shows that in cohousing the key to a redefinition of work is its community work, taking place at an intermediary level which is located between the private family and public spheres. Community work is more visible, pleasant and appreciated which is facilitated by a particular structure, physical space and a well-functioning community of a certain size. Furthermore, it allows a fairer distribution of work between women and men, facilitates family work, enables financial savings and strengthens the group. This study aims to reinforce the discussion ...

Ranjin Fernando Hydromorphologic survey and assessment of the lakeshore of Lake Scharmutzelsee as a prerequisite for the development of a lakeshore utilization strategy

Lakeshores are ecotones between aquatic and terrestrial habitats with a high economic and socio-economic significance. For many years, lake conservation focused on biological and chemical conditions and while improvements on these fields have been achieved, the anthropogenic pressures on European lakeshores have rather increased in recent years. Against this background, the development of utilization and protection strategies for lakeshores is urgently needed. A precondition for this is a standardized survey and assessment of the hydromorphological status which is also required by the European Water Framework Directive under certain circumstances. For this thesis, the lakeshore of Lake Scharmützelsee, the largest lake in the German state of Brandenburg, was classified according to the GIS-based Hydromorphology Lake (HML) protocol of Ostendorp (2008). Since the HML protocol was at the time still in a testing phase, methodical modifications were applied and recommendations for an improvement of the protocol are given. Deviating from the HML protocol, the eulittoral zone was delineated with a constant width of five meters and the sublittoral zone according to the potential maximum water depth where the available light permits the growth of submerged macrophytes. A detailed on-site mapping and a separate assessment of linear and planar objects in the eulittoral zone enhanced the quality of the data further. For Lake Scharmützelsee, the assessment showed an expected increase in an...

A multidisciplinary approach to problem-solving in community-based organizations using decision models and operations research applications A comprehensive treatment of public-sector operations research and management science, Decision Science for Housing and Community Development: Localized and Evidence-Based Responses to Distressed Housing and Blighted Communities addresses critical problems in urban housing and community development through a diverse set of decision models and applications. The book represents a bridge between theory and practice and is a source of collaboration between decision and data scientists and planners, advocates, and community practitioners. The book is motivated by the needs of community-based organizations to respond to neighborhood economic and social distress, represented by foreclosed, abandoned, and blighted housing, through community organizing, service provision, and local development. The book emphasizes analytic approaches that increase the ability of local practitioners to act quickly, thoughtfully, and effectively. By doing so, practitioners can design and implement responses that reflect stakeholder values associated with healthy and sustainable communities; that benefit from increased organizational capacity for evidence-based responses; and that result in solutions that represent improvements over the status quo according to multiple social outcome measures. Featuring quantitative and qualitative analytic methods as well as prescriptive and exploratory decision modeling, the book also includes: Discussions of the principles of decision theory and descriptive analysis to describe ways to identify and quantify values and objectives for community development Mathematical programming applications for real-world problem solving in foreclosed housing acquisition and redevelopment Applications of case studies and community-engaged research principles to analytics and decision modeling Decision Science for Housing and Community Development: Localized and Evidence-Based Responses to Distressed Housing and Blighted Communities is an ideal textbook for upper-undergraduate and graduate-level courses in decision models and applications; humanitarian logistics; nonprofit operations management; urban operations research; public economics; performance management; urban studies; public policy; urban and regional planning; and systems design and optimization. Mariwan Rahim Predicting suitable habitat of Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus) in Iraq, using Maxent model

Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Biology - Ecology, grade: 53.60, , course: Applied Ecology and Conservation, language: English, abstract: Species distribution modeling to predict and map appropriate habitat for endangered species is critical for monitoring and restoration of their population decline in natural habitat. However, data on distribution of endangered species are limited. Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus) is one of the endangered species in the world that its population has been declining by 50% in the last three decade. In this study, we have tried to test the predicted distribution of potentially suitable habitat for Egyptian Vulture in Iraq by using Maxent as species distribution model. To achieve these aims, we could be done with species distribution model outputs of Egyptian Vulture from occurrence data assembled from Nature Iraq and made distribution predictions, demonstrating how landscape and environmental variables may affect the species distribution and we determined their importance and compared known habitat of Egyptian Vulture from KBAs with predicted habitat predictions from Maxent. The model performed very well. The AUC value is 0.870, which is better than random prediction. The results indicate that one of the precipitation inputs, bio_13, contributed 54.3% to the final description of potential habitat for the Egyptian Vulture. This provides evidence that precipitation, particularly precipitation of wettest month, is the...

Not illustrated. 1983-07 edition. Excerpt: ...to the quality of relationships and the degree of social support we receive from those who are closest to us.1"5 Therefore, is it reasonable to believe that significant advance health can be achieved without the involvement of community people and without attention paid to the patterns of relationships between and among those who are members of the community? Planners in societies structured as differently as the Peoples' Republic of China and our own have come to realize the limitations of traditional responses to the challenges of rapid change in an increasingly interdependent world. Activists and planners with skills in community organization have followed the direction of redefining traditional roles and relationships. Barefoot doctors, cholera control agents, outreach workers, nurse practitioners, sanitation aides, health educators, and many many others are performing roles as old and new as man himself. Their fucntions are to be responsive to human needs, and as needs change so will their roles. Health status is more an indicator and a symptom of inequality than its cause. We agree with Dr. Sidney Kark that "changes in the environment, standards of education, and social status as determined by occupation, education, and income exert ...

Juan Lucena, Jen Schneider, Jon A. Leydens Engineering and Sustainable Community Development

This book, Engineering and Sustainable Community Development, presents an overview of engineering as it relates to humanitarian engineering, service learning engineering, or engineering for community development, often called sustainable community development (SCD). The topics covered include a history of engineers and development, the problems of using industry-based practices when designing for communities, how engineers can prepare to work with communities, and listening in community development. It also includes two case studies -- one of engineers developing a windmill for a community in India, and a second of an engineer "mapping communities" in Honduras to empower people to use water effectively -- and student perspectives and experiences on one curricular model dealing with community development.Table of Contents: Introduction / Engineers and Development: From Empires to Sustainable Development / Why Design for Industry Will Not Work as Design for Community / Engineering with Community / Listening to Community / ESCD Case Study 1: Sika Dhari's Windmill / ESCD Case Study 2: Building Organizations and Mapping Communities in Honduras / Students' Perspectives on ESCD: A Course Model / Beyond Engineers and Community: A Path Forward

The study entitled "The Role and Status of the Women in the Laladighirpar Slum: A Study" is basically a qualitative study substantiated by quantitative data. The major objectives of this study are to know about the socio-economic status of women in slums, investigate the role of women in family and outside family, identify the level of awareness about the role and status of women among the people living in slums, examine the present status of women in the slums areas with special reference to employment, education, skill and social status, And investigate the reasons as to why the slum women is unable to play their appropriate role within the family as well as seek the suggestions of women living in the slum for increasing their status and also making them capable to play their due roles. Laladighirpar slum is located in Sylhet City Corporation of Bangladesh, selected as the study area of conducting our study. This is basically an explotaratory research. For conducting that study we intended to use data collection methods, like:- interview schedule, observation, focused group discussion, case study, etc.

Ruth DeSouza, Andy Williamson Researching with Communities. Grounded perspectives on engaging communities in research

Researching with communities presents a range of personal and grounded perspectives from academics, researchers and practitioners on undertaking research in ways that promote and privilege the voice of the community, is respectful of local or indigenous practices and is culturally safe. Most definitely not a 'tick list' for approaching community-inclusive research, this book provides grounded exemplars, guides and discussion about the experiences of doing research respectfully and inclusively. It does this by drawing on the perspectives of researchers and community practitioners and by providing a range of reflective chapters that explore what community-based research means in a range of settings and for a range of people. Like the communities in which they are grounded, undertaking research in this way is always a unique experience.

The book is also an excellent reference for academics, researchers, and practitioners in operations research, management science, operations management, systems engineering, policy analysis, city planning, and data analytics.
