Bastakoti Geeta Bhatrai Gender Dimensions of Community-Based Forest Management

Community forestry program in Nepal evolved as an important and innovative approach to governance that facilitates the forest users to participate in the forest management and receive the benefits from the participation. This research aimed to assess the participation and benefit sharing from the gender perspectives in community-based forest management programs in Chitwan district of Nepal. The study revealed that role of the women is confined to plantation and silvi-cultural activities where as men are more involved harvesting, distribution and management activities. Although women were able to get representation through the reserve seats in CFUG EC, the decision making was influenced by the men in the mixed CFUG group. Even though the policy aims to improve participation of women in decision making, still various factors affect their participation and decision making capacities. Overall, it is seen that the CFUGs have contributed to the development at community level but still the CFUGs are not able to contribute effectively at the household level.

This book is the result of the study carried out in Narayani River of Chitwan National Park from 2012 to 2013 to investigate the habitats and abundances of the gharials. Altogether a total number of 38 gharials including 3 hatchlings, 8 juveniles, 12 sub-adults and 15 adults were recorded. Only one breeding male was observed and reflects the critical condition for the breeding of gharials in the wild within Chitwan Nationl Park. The abundance of the gharials were restricted in 2 areas, namely Khoria Muhan and Velaunji due to suitability of the habitat conditions and low human disturbances. The Basking activities in relation to depth showed that > 80 % of the gharials selected sandy banks. Among the 2 populations, the gharials in Khoria Muhan preferred shallow to moderate depth of water because of presence of braided channels in the area. In the downstream watercourse of Velaunji, the gharials select deep water course of the main channel. This book reflects the overall status of gharial conservation in Narayani River and contains the information on various aspects such as the habitat requirements, population status, nesting ecology, threats and conservation management.

Sonam Pem Participation and Empowerment in Participatory Irrigation Management

Participatory Irrigation Management (PIM) in Nepal was implemented in 1990s with the objective of transferring the irrigation management to the grass root level. It is clear that the management has been transferred to the community, but it is not clear as to how the objectives of PIM are being met. The study takes place in the two communities in Chitwan, Nepal: Chainpur and Pithuwa.Although the idea and the objectives of the PIM seemed very attractive, it is questionable as to how participation is taking place at different levels in the two communities. Taking into account the definition of participation and empowerment, the study shows that with the different cultural background and social difference, the farmers at different levels in the communities are not empowered and have no full pariticipation in the decision making of the management of the irrigation systems. On top of that, the study also shows the influence of the political structure of the country which is embedded in the two communities affecting the participation and empowerment of the farmers at different levels.

Tapendra Bahadur Shah Partnership extension for agricultural livelihoods

Insufficient and feeble coverage by government agricultural extension in Nepal lead to remodelling of thought from supply driven government extension towards more demand-driven equity based pluralistic and more collaborative extension. In the context, evidence in favour of partnership was produced in Chitwan district by DADO (a GO) and LI-BIRD (a NGO) since 2000 for three years. This fact evolved through a survey conducted in Chitwan and Nawalparasi of Nepal. It was found that, irrespective of type, the success of extension depends on the quality and relevancy of innovation to the farmer and locality. Likewise, proper selection of partnership organization, innovation with complete package were other crucial factors. Partnership extension was assessed with four parameters-extent of adoption, productivity, and income from agronomical crops and cropping intensity and they depicted superiority of partnership over non-partnership in the area. For the purpose, questionnaire survey was conducted with 120 farmers in regard to four crops- main season rice, spring rice, lentil and kidney bean and two recommended technologies- improved varieties and the seed priming technology.

Electricity in Fish Research and Management, 2nd Edition provides a comprehensive discussion of the uses of both electricity and electrical principles in fishery management and research. It covers electric fishing (including theory, equipment, data analysis and practical factors affecting efficiency), fish barriers, fish counters and fish welfare issues. The book concentrates on Electric Fishing (or Electrofishing); an internationally accepted and widely used procedure for sampling fish. Over the past 50 years electric fishing has become a standard method for fishery studies and management e.g. establishing population densities and abundance. However, due to the potential hazards of the method (both to operators and fish) there is a continuing need to develop and promote best practice guidelines. The author has studied fish ecology for 40 years and understands the need for information that reaches out to all levels of understanding in the field. Previous books on this subject have either been collections of scientific papers and/or technical reports or very simple instruction manuals. In this book theory and practice is explained using non-technical language and simple equations. It brings depth as well as breadth in both information and principles behind the methods and should be an invaluable tool to both fisheries managers and researchers. Although the book is aimed at undergraduates, the clear explanation of the factors means that the book is suitable for all levels of practitioners.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2001 in the subject Sociology - Individual, Groups, Society, , course: Sociology PhD thesis, language: English, abstract: Much scholarly work has centered around community in Newfoundland and Labrador. However, comparatively little work has focused on meanings of community. This thesis compares meanings of community in everyday life for people living in a Southern Shore community on Newfoundland's Avalon Peninsula, with the meanings found in scholarly literature and in government documents produced in association with The Atlantic Groundfish Strategy (TAGS). TAGS was a federal adjustment program responding to the moratoria on groundfish fishing in Atlantic Canada in the 1990s. I draw on Dorothy Smith's feminist theory, which starts from "lived experience" as well as the socioeconomic context of that lived experience as an entry point to illuminating the ideological nature of documents and their links to ruling relations. Smith's discussion of ideology and ruling relations are central to my gender-informed and mediated framework. I explore the contrast between meanings of community in TAGS documents and expert texts looking for lines of fault between these texts and meanings of community in everyday life in a fishing community in Newfoundland.I use as well Smith's notions of resilience and emergent consciousness to demonstrate that the historical oppressive practices of the ruling group are re-mobilized in TA...

All life on earth occurs in natural assemblages called communities. Community ecology is the study of patterns and processes involving these collections of two or more species. Communities are typically studied using a diversity of techniques, including observations of natural history, statistical descriptions of natural patterns, laboratory and field experiments, and mathematical modelling. Community patterns arise from a complex assortment of processes including competition, predation, mutualism, indirect effects, habitat selection, which result in the most complex biological entities on earth – including iconic systems such as rain forests and coral reefs. This book introduces the reader to a balanced coverage of concepts and theories central to community ecology, using examples drawn from terrestrial, freshwater, and marine systems, and focusing on animal, plant, and microbial species. The historical development of key concepts is described using descriptions of classic studies, while examples of exciting new developments in recent studies are used to point toward future advances in our understanding of community organization. Throughout, there is an emphasis on the crucial interplay between observations, experiments, and mathematical models. This second updated edition is a valuable resource for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and established scientists who seek a broad overview of community ecology. The book has developed from a course in community ecology that has been taught by the author since 1983. Figures and tables can be downloaded for free from www.wiley.com/go/morin/communityecology

Community ecology: the study of the patterns and processes involving two or more species – has developed rapidly in the last two decades, driven by new and more sophisticated research techniques, advances in mathematical theory and modeling, and the increasing pressure on the environment wrought by humans. Once a purely descriptive science, it is now one of the most forward-looking areas of scientific inquiry. Morin skillfully guides the reader through the main tenets and central concepts of community ecology – competition, predation, food webs, indirect effects, habitat selection, diversity, and succession. In an attempt to introduce the reader to the most balanced coverage possible, Morin includes examples drawn from both the aquatic and terrestrial realm and from both plant and animal species. Balancing theory with experimentation and drawing on exciting new studies to complement the historical foundations of the discipline, he also stresses that both the empirical and theoretical approaches are necessary to drive ecology foward into the new millenium. The final chapter on applied community ecology ably demonstrates how community ecological processes have a wide environmental relevance. Although in its infancy, the application of community ecology to emerging problems in human-dominated ecosystems could mitigate problems as diverse as management strategies for important diseases transmitted by animals and the restoration and reconstruction of viable communities. Required reading for all students and practitioners interested in community phenomena, Community Ecology marks an important contribution to the development of this protean discipline. The first serious textbook for a decade on one of the keystone subdisciplines of ecology. Broad taxonomic and habitat coverage. Section on implications of community ecology for environmental issues.

Scientific Essay from the year 2010 in the subject Cultural Studies - Miscellaneous, San Diego State University, language: English, abstract: Creating a twenty-first-century city is not so much a question of technology as it is of jobs, dollars and quality of life. A community's plan to reinvent itself for the new, knowledge-based economy and society therefore requires educating all its citizens about this new global revolution in the nature of work. To succeed, cities must prepare their citizens to take ownership of their communities and educate the next generation of leaders and workers to meet the new global challenges of what is now being termed the "Creative Economy." At the heart of such efforts must be recognition of the vital roles that art and technology play in enhancing economic development and, ultimately, defining a "creative community" -- a community that exploits the vital linkages among art, technology and commerce. A community with a sense of place. A community that nurtures attracts and holds the most creative and innovation workers. Those communities placing a premium on cultural, ethnic, and artistic diversity, reinventing their knowledge factories for the creative age, and building the new information infrastructures for our age, will likely burst with creativity and entrepreneurial fervor. Reproductive Biology of Teleost Fishes is the first integrated review of the reproductive biology of the bony fishes, which are the most species-rich and diversified group of vertebrates. Teleosts display remarkable variation in their modes of reproduction, and this volume is intended to provide a framework for understanding the remarkable reproductive diversity of this group. It describes their reproductive biology using, wherever possible, phylogenetic analyses and life-history theory as a means to interpret the information. The book addresses the genetic, physiological, behavioural, ecological, evolutionary and applied aspects of teleost reproduction in a comparative framework that emphasises the adaptive basis of reproductive diversity. Reproductive Biology of Teleost Fishes provides a comprehensive synthesis of fish reproduction that will be of great interest to life scientists, particularly ecologists, evolutionary biologists, physiologists and advanced undergraduates, postgraduates and research workers requiring a comprehensive overview of fish reproduction. The book is suitable for courses in fish biology and ecology, reproductive physiology and reproductive genetics. It also addresses applied questions and will be of value for courses on fisheries science and aquaculture. Libraries in all universities and research establishments where biological sciences, fisheries science and aquaculture are studied and taught should have several copies of this important book on their shelves.

Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,0, Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, language: English, abstract: The present work gives an overview of the current situation of diversity management in Germany and brings together the most comprehensive base of knowledge. The aim of this study is to gather the state of research on theoretical approaches, organizational best practice and practical implementation. To rate the current implementation in Germany, companies, especially all 30 DAX-listed companies, were evaluated and Diversity Charter signatures and the appointment of a diversity manager were used as central evaluation criteria. Furthermore, a deductive content analysis examined components of implemented diversity practices. The Diversity Charter was signed by 28 companies and 29 have a person in charge as a diversity manager. This is a slight increase over the previous year, but the number of new signatories in total shows a step backwards. The content analysis shows that almost all DAX 30 companies have established a strategic integration and a focus on themes of gender and cultural diversity were identified. The results are discussed, taking into account theoretical findings, and implications for the business environment are added.

Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 188. Diversity of Hydrothermal Systems on Slow Spreading Ocean Ridges presents a multidisciplinary overview of the remarkable emerging diversity of hydrothermal systems on slow spreading ocean ridges in the Atlantic, Indian, and Arctic oceans. When hydrothermal systems were first found on the East Pacific Rise and other Pacific Ocean ridges beginning in the late 1970s, the community consensus held that the magma delivery rate of intermediate to fast spreading was necessary to support black smoker-type high-temperature systems and associated chemosynthetic ecosystems and polymetallic sulfide deposits. Contrary to that consensus, hydrothermal systems not only occur on slow spreading ocean ridges but, as reported in this volume, are generally larger, exhibit different chemosynthetic ecosystems, produce larger mineral deposits, and occur in a much greater diversity of geologic settings than those systems in the Pacific. The full diversity of hydrothermal systems on slow spreading ocean ridges, reflected in the contributions to this volume, is only now emerging and opens an exciting new frontier for ocean ridge exploration, including Processes of heat and chemical transfer from the Earth's mantle and crust via slow spreading ocean ridges to the oceans The major role of detachment faulting linking crust and mantle in hydrothermal circulation Chemical reaction products of mantle involvement including serpentinization, natural hydrogen, abiotic methane, and hydrocarbon synthesis Generation of large polymetallic sulfide deposits hosted in ocean crust and mantle Chemosynthetic vent communities hosted in the diverse settings The readership for this volume will include schools, universities, government laboratories, and scientific societies in developed and developing nations, including over 150 nations that have ratified the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Document from the year 2013 in the subject Environmental Sciences, grade: A, , language: English, abstract: The Purpose of this study was to examine the development condition of the community living close to the Kakamega forest and to recommend strategies for developing the community, so that the community can contribute more effectively to the co-management of the natural resources. The author worked with forest committees in order to study the development issues, needs and priorities of the community; the resources in the community; the community's judgment of the previous and current development projects; and the experience of the community in relation to the development projects. The author used situational analysis, direct and participant observation, as well as two focused group discussions to obtain the data. The participants were members of the forest committees who represent the communities living within the 10km radius from forest boundary. Study findings indicate that there are limited community development projects in the area. These projects cannot adequately meet the needs of the community and cannot sustainably lead to environment conservation. The community largely participated in the development as either casual laborers or self employed community group members. The willingness to participate was influenced by the desire to improve the living conditions, while barriers to participation included perceived corruption, myths about gender, age and development...

Clayton J. Ruminski Iron Valley. The Transformation of the Iron Industry in Ohio.s Mahoning Valley, 1802-1913

Youngstown, Ohio, and the surrounding Mahoning Valley supplied the iron that helped transform the United States into an industrial powerhouse in the nineteenth century. The story of the Mahoning Valley's unorthodox rise from mid-scale iron producer to twentieth-century "Steel Valley" is a tale of innovation, stagnation, and, above all, extreme change. Located halfway between Pittsburgh and Cleveland, the Mahoning Valley became a major supplier of pig iron to America's biggest industrial regions. For much of the nineteenth century, outside consumers relied on the Valley's pig iron, but this reliance nurtured a reluctance on the part of Youngstown iron companies to diversify or expand their production. In Iron Valley: The Transformation of the Iron Industry in Ohio's Mahoning Valley, 1802-1913, Clayton J. Ruminski argues that Youngstown-area iron manufacturers were content to let others in the industry innovate, and only modernized when market conditions forced them to do so. Desperate to find new markets, some Youngstown iron manufacturers eventually looked toward steel and endured a rapid, but successful, industrial transformation that temporarily kept their old enterprises afloat in a rapidly evolving industry. Richly illustrated with rare photographs of Mahoning Valley ironmasters, mills, furnaces, and workers, Iron Valley sheds light on a previously underrepresented and vital region that built industrial America.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1885 edition. Excerpt: ... FISHING IN THE GREAT LAKES. A large proportion of the inhabitants residing upon the shores of Lake Superior, Michigan and Huron, are fishermen by profession, earning their living, not in the manner of the disciples of Isaac Walton, but by the use of pound nets. The ordinary angler when he casts Lis line in these great waters looks and feels exatperatingly diminutive by the side of these wholesale fish butcheries. It has been estimated that Lake Superior alone produces annually over two million white-fish and trout, say nothing of the other varieties taken, which would certainly number together another million. The labor and capital required in managing these fisheries is far greater than is generally supposed. The " plants " are usually made in deep water, sometimes to the depth of eighty or ninety feet. The places selected for planting pound nets is at the edge of banks or shoals where the water rapidly deepens. Here the fish rise and seek the edge of the shoal in quest of small fish, on which they feed. The "pot" of the net is shaped like a heart, and wings are extended from the larger end of the heart, where there is an orifice for the fish to enter In groping for the edge of the bank, the fish strike the wings, and, feeling along the...

IntroductionGotikhel Hydropower Plant (GHP) is one of the nearest Isolated Micro Hydropower Plant (MHP) from the main city out of 650 isolated MHPs available in Nepal which still supplies electrical power to 173 Households, one hull machine and one school. The extension of national grid has made life of MHPs insecure as consumers want the energy from more reliable source i.e. from national grid. In the context of Nepal, especially in rural areas, construction of MHPs are very costly and because of unplanned extension of national grid, some of MHPs are in closing conditions and same cases will continue more in future. So, there is a huge risk in big investments and valuable efforts of villagers. Synchronization of MHPs to the national grid will be the ultimate solution for the existence of MHPs in Nepal. So, this Master Thesis will also focus on grid connection of GHP and consequent impacts on technical as well as financial sectors before and after the grid connection of GHP. 2. For all these reasons it is impossible to expect that the introduction of the cultural matrix of different content lead to identical applicability in this area. As a major European norm Macedonia imposed policy of implementation of multicultural inclusion that the international community has imposed itself as a way of dealing with inter-ethnic conflict by promoting linguistic and cultural diversity based on justice and equality with the main intention of introducing culture in primary goods thus achieving equality for all citizens of different ethnic origin on the basis of equality. Larry Duggins Together

Together: Community as a Means of Grace addresses the concept of community as an avenue to a deeper relationship with God. Using an ecumenical Wesleyan approach, Duggins explores the concept of ""God as community"" to conclude that bringing people together in almost any setting allows them to grow in God's image. He frames this idea using the historical concept of the ""means of grace"": the ordinary ways in which people encounter God.Drawing heavily on the work of the Missional Wisdom Foundation, Duggins begins with a reflection on the community-building aspects of traditional church. He then uses storytelling to introduce four common forms of community: community through work, community through food, community through children's schools and activities, and community through shared recreational activities.Together is intended to help Christian people embrace the freedom to experiment with alternative forms of Christian community. Duggins nudges the missional imagination of people who long for spiritual connection and growth, but for whom traditional church is not the answer. Using a ""yes, and"" approach, he shows that traditional church can empower and stand alongside new forms of community, each of which can act as a means of grace.""We have a deep desire for community and a correspondingly deep thirst for grace. As Larry Duggins develops a practical theology grounded in scripture and Wesleyan tradition, he en...

Salena Sangachhe Wind Energy for a Sustainable Future

In the present context of blackouts and severe power shortage it is only explicable that Nepal, among other alternative energy sources, is trying to develop its own wind power. However, lots of factors seem to be impeding its development. Therefore, in order to understand and explore the possible routes to success for the wind power development in Nepal, this book looks into the close neighbor, India and investigates its relative success in Wind Industry. Upon analysis on Indian success on wind technology with regard to the contribution of low carbon technology transfer, it was observed that India effectively assimilated wind technology from abroad following a range of initiatives. Further, exploring the issues related to wind power development in Nepal, illustrated that similar initiatives are required in Nepal as well. Meanwhile, one could also agnize the potential of Nepal-India collaboration in the development process of wind technology in Nepal. This book is thus expected to be useful to wind energy developers and promoters trying to bring wind technology into mainstream in the developing countries and also to low carbon technology transfer advocates.

These four areas, as outlined in the publication, are Organizational Manager, Institutional Strategic Leader, Field Contributor, and Community Innovator. The purpose of the book is to support strategic professional development and it should be used to help community engagement professionals to reflect on their own practice and growth. This reflective practice should be connected to wider discussions of how campuses can continue to institutionalize civic and community engagement, and the book provides concrete ways for community engagement professionals to link personal vocation to systemic change.
