Advanced Oxidation Process is modern chemical method for the treatment of water containing non- biodegradable /toxic substances and to get decontaminated drinking water. Zinc acetate precursor is used to deposit zinc oxide thin films by Spray pyrolysis technique. Preperative parameters such as, substrate temperature, solution concentration and quantity of spraying solution were optimized to get good quality zinc oxide thin films. The prepared films were characterized by PEC, XRD, SEM, EDAX and UV-vis spectroscopy characterization techniques. Silver and gold deposited zinc oxide films were prepared to enhance photocatalytic inactivation of bacteria. The optimized stratified layer of TiO2 was given on zinc oxide thin films to improve its performance in photocatalytic process. The films prepared at optimized conditions of temperatures, concentrations are used in specially designed photoelectrochemical detoxification reactor. The prepared ZnO, Ag:ZnO , Au:ZnO and ZnO/TiO2 films are used to degrade Methylene blue (MB), textile effluent and inactivation bacteria such as E.coli, Bacillus, Salmonella, Staphylococcus etc.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films have good electro-optical properties suitable for opto-electronic applications. The present study explains the deposition and characterization of n-type and p-type ZnO thin films by spray pyrolysis. The films were characterized by different methods to understand their structural, optical and electrical properties. Gallium was chosen as the impurity dopant in ZnO films to improve the electrical properties. The electrical conductivity, carrier concentration and mobility of Ga doped ZnO (GZO) films were highly improved in comparison to undoped ZnO films. The GZO films showed good optical transmittance in the visible region. The electrical and optical results suggest that the GZO films are suitable to use as a TCO in optoelectronic industries. The p-type ZnO thin films were successesfully realized using dual acceptor method. The Hall measurements and room temperature photolumiscence results were supported p-type nature of (Li, N):ZnO thin films.

Zinc oxide nanoparticles have potential applications in various areas including optical piezoelectric, semiconductors, magnetic and gas sensing. Most of the approaches for synthesis zinc oxide (ZnO) nanopartcles use hazardous chemicals, high energy requirements and wasteful purification. Therefore, there is a growing need to develop environmentally friendly methods for synthesis of nanoparticles without using hazardous chemicals. Plant leaves provide a better platform for nanoparticles synthesis and have many advantages free from toxic materials, cost-effective and natural capping and stabilizing agents. In this work we designed a simple and green method for synthesis highly dispersed uniform zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) at ambient temperature using pistachio leaf extract. The mechanism responsible for the zinc nanoparticles formation was discussed. X-Ray diffraction (XRD) pattern reveals the formation of ZnO nanoparticles, which shows crystallinity. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) suggested particles size and shape in the range of 5-40 nm. Intensive research on semiconductor nanomaterials has increased remarkably during the past years due to their unique characteristics. The effects of substrate and grain size on structural and optical properties of these materials are also discussed. Moreover, the synthesis of CdS nanoparticles and fabrication of ZnO thin films by the sol-gel methods and their spectroscopic characterization are described. The ab-initio DFT calculations are carried for the computations of the DOS and band structures of the CdS hexagonal wurtzite, CdTe zinc blende and ZnO hexagonal wurtzite. Effect of Cd dopping in ZnO is also studied theoretically.

Binary compound semiconductor of (CdS) and copper doped (CdS:Cu) thin films have been deposited onto glass substrates at substrate temperature (T =653 K) by spray technique. Different doped films were prepared using different concentrations of Cu (0.1-2%). The effect of copper doping on some physical properties of the prepared films of thickness (0.9 ± 0.05 µm) was investigated. The structural, optical and electrical properties of the films have been studied using X-ray diffraction, optical transmission spectra and electrical conductivity respectively. These properties were found to be strongly dependent on the doping concentration. The polycrystalline films with a hexagonal structure for undoped and a mixed (hexagonal+cubic) structure for doped films have been obtained. The optical band gap of these films was found to be decreased from 2.451 to 2.410 eV with increase Cu concentration. The electrical conductivity of these films was found to be decreased initially with increasing Cu concentration, while it started to increase for doping values over 1% of Cu, and a conversion of the conductivity type of the films (from n-type to p-type) was observed at doping level above 1%.

This book highlights the display applications of c-axis aligned crystalline indium–gallium–zinc oxide (CAAC-IGZO), a new class of oxide material that challenges the dominance of silicon in the field of thin film semiconductor devices. Inhaltsangabe:Problemstellung: Oxidschichten mit metallähnlichen Leitungseigenschaften oder mit Halbleiterverhalten sind für viele verschiedene Anwendungen von Interesse. Beispielhaft genannt seien hier die sogenannten TCO-Schichten (transparent conductive oxide), die nicht zuletzt in der Photovoltaik bei Dünnschichtsolarzellen von Bedeutung sind, sowie Titandioxid-Schichten, ebenfalls mit Anwendungsmöglichkeiten in der Photovoltaik (Halbleiter-Elektrode bei der elektrochemischen Solarzelle). Von besonderer technischer Bedeutung sind die elektrochemisch abscheidbaren Oxide Bleidioxid und Mangandioxid ("Braunstein") als wesentliche Grundstoffe der Bleiakkumulatoren, sowie der sogenannten "Trockenbatterien" (LeclancheSysteme und "alkaline-manganese"- Systeme). Beide Oxide sind auch theoretisch von Interesse, da es sich um Substanzen mit elektrochemisch variierbarer Stöchiometrie handelt. Dies bedeutet, daß "Wasserstoff" in Form von Protonen aus dem Elektrolyten und Elektronen aus dem elektrischen Zuleiter kathodisch in die Oxide eingebaut bzw. anodisch wieder ausgebaut werden kann. Andererseits können diese Oxide - wie oben schon erwähnt - auf elektrochemischem Wege anodisch abgeschieden bzw. kathodisch aufgelöst werden. This book gives an overview on studies of physical, chemical and luminescent properties of pure and rare-earth doped group IV A oxide phosphors has been discussed. The oxides taken under consideration in present work is SiO2 and SnO2. SiO2 have been known for a long time as a convenient host for rare earths and have been widely used for the fabrication of solid-state lasers whereas SnO2 is a wide band gap n-type semiconductor with wide band gap of 2.5-3eV, which crystallizes in the rutile structure (tetragonal structure), SnO2 is a member of a special class of semiconductors that have direct band gaps but are dipole forbidden due to their special wave function symmetry. In the present work group IV A oxide (SiO2 and SnO2) phosphors had been prepared by sol-gel method but pure form of group IV A nanophosphors has feeble luminescence intensity. It increases many fold by doping them with rare earth elements therefore doping has been carried out with the help of rare earth elements (Ce3+, Eu3+ and Dy3+). They are incorporated simultaneously into silica and tin matrixes by sol-gel processes and are further characterized by general and luminescence characterization techniques.

Owing to the high critical temperature (Tc) of 40 K, intrinsically “weak-link” free grain boundaries, and low fabrication cost, MgB2 is believed to be promising for replacing conventional low Tc superconductors in many cryogen- free applications. Nevertheless, its rapid drop in critical current under applied magnetic field and low critical field exclude it from many industrial applications where a high critical current density (Jc) under high magnetic field is required. Many studies have shown that carbon containing dopants are effective means to enhance the field dependence of Jc and the upper critical field (Hc2) of MgB2. This book describes extensive research efforts towards the improvement of the superconducting properties of MgB2 through graphene/ graphene oxide doping and explains the improvements in relation to the electromagnetic behaviour. This book focuses on fabrication of ZnO/CdS optical sensor. Nanocrystalline ZnO/CdS core-shell optical sensors were fabricated by chemical bath deposition (CBD) method. Vertically aligned ZnO nanorods were firstly synthesized on silicon p-type (111) by CBD method with assist of microwave. The CdS were deposited on the ZnO nanorods to create core-shell structure by using CBD method with cadmium chloride (CdCl2) 0.15M as Cd2+ ion source at difference deposition time. ZnO nanorods were the core and CdS were the shell of this core-shell structure. The photoconductive testing was carried out to test this optical sensor light detection by shining ultraviolet (UV) light pulse on the devices. The devices affect the light absorption and have higher sensitivity to the light. The highest sensitivity reached 53% for the ZnO/CdS optical sensor while the ZnO optical sensor only 6.77% and ZnO/CdS can response to high frequency light pulse. The energy band gap of ZnO/CdS was also lowered to 3.3eV compared to ZnO, 3.38eV. These results demonstrate the existence of CdS has enhanced the ability and the properties of optical sensor compared to ZnO nanorods optical sensor alone.

The work focuses on the investigation of single Co-implanted ZnO nanowires using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques with a nanometer resolution. The ZnO nanowires (NWs) were grown on Si substrates using VLS mechanism. The synthesized ZnO NWs were doped with Co via an ion implantation process. For the first time, the combined use of these techniques allows us to study the dopant homogeneity, composition, short- and large-range structural order of single NWs. The nano-XRF results indicate the successful and homogeneous Co doping with the desired concentrations in the ZnO NWs by an ion implantation process. The nano-XAS and XRD data analyses provide new insights into the lattice distortions produced by the structural defect formation generated by the ion implantation process. These findings highlight the importance of the post-implantation thermal annealing to recover the structure of single ZnO NWs at the nanometer length scale. In general, the methodologies used in this work open new avenues for the application of synchrotron based multi-techniques for detailed study of single semiconductor NWs at the nanoscale.

This book provides a description of the generalized two layer surface complexation model, data treatment procedures, and thermodynamic constants for sorption of metal cations and anions on gibbsite, the most common form of aluminum oxide found in nature and one of the most abundant minerals in soils, sediments, and natural waters. The book provides a synopsis of aluminum oxide forms and a clearly defined nomenclature. Compilations of available data for sorption of metal cations and anions on gibbsite are presented, and the results of surface complexation model fitting of these data are given. The consistency of the thermodynamic surface complexation constants extracted from the data is examined through development of linear free energy relationships which are also used to predict thermodynamic constants for ions for which insufficient data are available to extract constants. The book concludes with a comparison of constants extracted from data for sorption on gibbsite with those determined previously for hydrous ferric oxide (HFO), hydrous manganese oxide (HMO), and goethite. The overall objective of this book is the development and presentation of an internally consistent thermodynamic database for sorption of inorganic cations and anions on gibbsite, an abundant and reactive mineral in soils, sediments, and aquatic systems. Its surface has a high affinity for sorption of metal cations and anions, including radionuclides. The gibbsite database will enable simulation and prediction of the influence of sorption on the fate of these chemical species in natural systems and treatment processes in which aluminum oxides are abundant. It thus will help to advance the practical application of surface complexation modeling.

Nanoestruturas orientadas de ZnO foram crescidas na forma de filme sobre a camada de nucleação usando síntese hidrotermal. Com um estudo detalhado da utilização de diferentes precursores para obtenção de ZnO, foi possível obter diferentes morfologias de ZnO por síntese hidro termal, tanto em forma de pó, como crescidas orientadas sobre a camada de nucleação depositada sobre diferentes substratos. As propriedades morfológicas, estruturais e ópticas da camada de nucleação e dos filmes porosos de ZnO foram caracterizadas pelo uso das técnicas de FEG- SEM, Difração de Raios X (DRX) e Espectroscopia por UV-Vis. Os resultados observados indicaram que os parâmetros usados para obter a camada de nucleação influenciaram na morfologia das nanoestruturas de ZnO crescidas por síntese hidrotermal. Amostras de ZnO com propriedades morfológicas consideradas promissoras para melhorar o transporte de carga e diminuir processos de recombinação de carga foram aplicadas como fotoeletrodos em CSSCs. A melhor eficiência obtida nas CSSCs foi de 0,83% com fotoeletrodos de ZnO com morfologia de nanoflores formadas por nanobastões, morfologia orientada e ramificada.

Solar light driven water oxidation photocatalyst Bi20TiO32 has been successfully synthesized through sol gel process. Photocatalytic activity of Bi20TiO32 for oxygen evolution using silver nitrate as sacrificial agent under UV light and visible light irradiation have also been studied and enhanced by the addition of co-catalyst iridium oxide and platinum to the photocatalyst. Furthermore, overall water splitting reaction using Bi20TiO32 in combination with CuFeO2 has also been conducted by conventional and modified Z-scheme process in both single and twin reactor. Photo-reduced graphene oxide and co-catalyst iridium oxide and ruthenium have been used to enhance photocatalytic activity water splitting.
