Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Women Studies / Gender Studies, grade: A - Distinction, University College London (School of Public Policy), course: Msc International Public Policy, language: English, abstract: This study applies recent innovative perspectives in the field of constitutive representation of gender (CRG) to an exploratory case study of Italy. The analysis is based on the political manifestos of the winning coalition for the 2001, 2006 and 2008 general elections, and the speeches of the Ministers for Equal Opportunities concerning the ministerial program guidelines made at the beginning of each legislature. The purpose of the work is: 1) to explore how gender relations, feminine identities and their interests are constructed through representative claims, 2) to examine what policy pledges representatives commit to when they seek to substantively act for women and 3) to investigate the link between CRG and SRW by analysing the congruency between the pledges made for women and the legislation proposed by the Italian women's policy agency, the Ministry for the Equal Opportunities.Traditional research on women's political representation focuses on the substantive (SRW) and descriptive representation of women and on the link between the two. However, the relationship has proved to be elusive and evidence is inconclusive. Recently a new conceptualisation of political representation, intended as a creative and performative act, has been ad...

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,8, University of Leipzig, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this study is to analyse the representation of women in utopian and dystopian literature. The research question of this paper is: To what extent is the representation of women and their status in the fictional societies determined by gender relations in the context of the distribution of power? To explore this question the historical context in which s/he wrote the novel is also assumed to be important. The approach applied to this thesis is based on gender and literary studies. In order to analyse the representation of women, this thesis offers a coherent structure consisting of four important steps. Firstly, each novel will be introduced with a brief paragraph on the historical background. Secondly, the power relations of the society have to be observed. Thirdly, the resulting gender relations will be analysed. Finally, in the context of the prior three steps of this thesis, the representation of women will be observed. In addition, I will use traditional female stereotypes in literature as a criterion for the analysis of the representation of women. The novels chosen for this purpose are Herland, written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman in 1915, followed by the dystopia Brave New World, written by Aldous Huxley in 1932. The final novel will be the dystopia The Handmaid's Tale, written by Margar...

English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is purpose-driven English meant to serve particular purpose in specific disciplines. As many authors in the field of ESP agree, need analysis is always at the heart of ESP in designing appropriate course materials for learners in specific contexts. The purpose of this study was to examine the English language needs of Geography students to see whether the current Geography ESP textbooks meet the Geography students' needs. The analysis of the data revealed that Geography ESP textbooks are more ineffective for Geography students in their learning process and for their target use. The absence of listening skill in Geography ESP textbooks was the most important problem for their target use. The study underlines the need to modify Geography ESP textbooks to address the present and target needs of Geography learners.

Since the dawn of history, folktales have been serving to pass didactic lessons to the audience to enlighten their mindset. However, this literary genre has started recently to lose its superficial role due to its inherent discursiveness in representing gender identity. Thus, the book in hand aims at scrutinizing the representation of gender dual dichotomy in folktales; this book is also written to provide the reader with a theoretical as well as an analytical insight on issues that concern gender as a social construct. To this very reason, a case study has been selected for exploring closely the various metaphorical aspects through which gender clash is depicted. For the critical study of this problematic theme, recourse to the feminist-based oppositional approach is suggested in this vein to fit into the requirements of our methodological analysis.

The purpose of this work is to examine the visual representation of gender in advertising images published by the fashion company American Apparel. Advertising images as socially meaningful materials construct, reflect, and transform notions of femininity and masculinity in society. The study includes an archaeological approach which generates data from archived advertising material of American Apparel. Due to the qualitative nature of the study only limited material is required which is subsequently interpreted through applying a discourse analysis. With respect to this, six advertisements are analysed in order to explore the visual construction gender. This book contributes to extent previous work of gender representation by examining the female and male body as a discursive effect by providing an understanding for advertising meaning inherent in images. Consequently, it shows the importance to recognize that advertising imagery, as a signifying practice, impacts cultural and individual conceptions of gender.

Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Pedagogy - School System, Educational and School Politics, grade: A, Atlantic International University (School of Human and Social Studies), language: English, abstract: AbstractEducation is universally recognized as playing role in sustainable social and economic development. Regardless of the ideology underlying approaches to development, education improves the quality of life; it improves health, expands access to paid employment, increases productivity in market and non-market work, and facilitates social and political participation. Because of these facts, the education of girls and women is therefore an important investment, despite the precarious economic contexts within which many countries have to provide for education. Gender refers to historical and sociological relationships between women and men. If development is seen as an attempt to raise the quality of life all citizen, gender in development works toward ensuring that the special needs of women with respect to those of men, are met in this process. However, significant gender inequalities exist in education sector. These inequalities are found not only in indicators which can be rapidly obtained from statistical sources such as literacy, enrolment, achievement and levels of schooling attained, but also in several other aspects of education which are of concern in the pursuit of gender equality and equity such as management personnel in decision-making roles, cur...

Gender inequality in most democratic countries in the world including Ghana has been a major setback to development. For instance, scholars have postulated on practical ideals and measures that countries could apply to close the gender gap if not completely eradicate women under-representation existing in most countries including Ghana. Ironically, Ghana's population is made up of over 52% females but has less than 10% of females occupying political and economic positions within the country. This study "Women and Democracy in Ghana" analyzes the existing scholarly debate and discussions about the cultural and institutional causes for the under-representation of women within its political system. In effect, the book provides systematic evidence on the under-representation of women in Ghana's parliament from independence in 1957 to the current legislature elected in December of 2008. Also included in the book is the tabular representation of women in Ghana's parliament from 1957 to present. The research reveals that the under-representation of women within the political system has contributed in undermining Ghana's democratic regime.

Книга "A Comparative Study of Wh-Words in Chinese EFL Textbooks, Elicited Native and Non-Native Speaker Data and Written Native and Non-Native Speaker Corpora. A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate School of Humanities of the University of Birmingham for the degree".This study presents a corpus-based analysis of the use of "wh" sentences by language learners, in language textbooks and in authentic written discourse. It focuses on the polysemeous nature of "wh" words, which can be used as interrogatives, declaratives and to introduce subordinate clauses. The analysis of "wh" sentences in EFL textbooks showed that there are more prototypical examples at low proficiency levels. When teaching the interrogative, textbooks focus almost exclusively on grammatical words, particularly at the beginners' level. The analysis of "wh" sentences elicited from Chinese speaking learners of English and Expert users of English suggested that the prototypical structure is very strong in both sets of data, although native speakers tend to use more prefabricated chunks of language. The analysis of "wh" sentences from native speakers and non-native speakers' written corpora suggested that subordinate clauses are strongly present in both corpora, except for the word "why" in non-native speakers' data. The use of different words occurring immediately after "wh" words in the two corpora can be explained by (1) the relatively small v...

The 1990s brought democratic transition to the countries of Central Eastern Europe - a still ongoing process, with specific social, economic and political challenges to be met in each country, including the reform of education. This book explores the educational reform process in Slovenia and Hungary from a gender perspective. A theoretical discussion of the relevance of gender in education is followed by a comparative analysis of the national curriculum reform and gender issues therein, the presence of gender in educational discourse, and the implications of the reforms for textbooks and teacher training in the two countries. The study is concluded by an assessment of the relative success of the reforms. Completed in 2003, the study covers an under-researched area, raises further questions and points towards potential research directions for scholars interested in gender and education in the CEE region. Recommendations are offered about elements of the Slovenian reform that could be adapted in Hungary to improve the curriculum and provide a context for discourse on gender in educational policies and practice, therefore the book is also of interest for educational decision-makers.

Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Economics - Other, grade: 10/10, , language: English, abstract: This paper analyzes whether the legislative women's quota implemented in Tanzania has helped to reduce the existing gender gap in that country. We focus on a set of development indicators indicated by the literature and an analysis of female political activity. We exploit the variation in the number of female representatives across the 131 districts of Tanzania, employing a Difference and Differences approach including fixed effects and controlling for a number of socioeconomic variables. Our analysis indicates that the legislative women's quota in Tanzania has led to significant reductions in the gender gap and improvements for women. The quota has effectively increased political participation in accordance with its goals, and the level of female representation continues to rise. We find evidence that the quota has reduced the gender gap in education for certain age groups, and we find indications of small improvements to female empowerment. In accordance with previous findings in other countries, we find that the increased female representation has led to substantial investments in water infrastructure that has greatly increased the number of people with access to clean water. While we do not find significant health impacts, this may be due to limitations in our dataset.

However, the trends of practices are representing the positive approach to the integrative and ethical perspectives on gender issues in commercial banks of Bangladesh over time which could be proved in future for the time being.

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2013 in the subject Sociology - Gender Studies, grade: A, Jawaharlal Nehru University (School of International Studies), course: Ph.D, language: English, abstract: The formation of gender identity and consequent gender differences is instilled in thesocial fabric, reinforced in daily life and is practiced and perpetuated through theprocess of socialization. This leads to asymmetry and consequent inequality which in away sanctions male hegemony over gender hierarchy and allows for a male gazethrough which women are viewed as an object of gratification; a vulnerable group; avoice less gender; and traditional care-givers. This narrow gaze vis a vis womenconsequently put the lives of women in jeopardy and expose them to various sexualviolence and discrimination in private and public domain. However, enforcement of law has not sufficiently reduced the crisis of sexual violence. The reason behind this being legal consciousness having a narrow value laden gaze inwhich sexual violence is defined through the same larger framework of patriarchaldiscourse which considers it to as crime only. This escapes the root cause of sexualviolence and intensifies the problem of gender inequality and gender violence in society. This paper therefore, attempts to analyze the ways through which women are viewedthrough a social gaze which objectify them as modest, tender, and weak and thusjustifies their vulnerability in public spaces. It also analyses how the l...

Same-sex ballroom dance is a realitvely new phenomenon. Besides artistic and sport aspects it has social relevance, too. In this book I analyze how female same-sex competitive ballroom dance can challenge patriarchal order. I argue that same-sex dancing is not simply an imitation of male-female dancing by two women, but it challenges the notion of patriarchal male-female relations reflected symbolically in dance. It cannot totally eliminate power differences between the partners, though. Ballroom dance is a symbolic representation of gender relations. Previous results also show how same-sex partnerships challenge the notion of gender relations. These let me expect that same-sex dancing challenges the notion of gender relations. Ballroom dance is a performance of heterosexuality and conventional gender roles. It is a symbolic representation of male-female sexual and social relationships. Same-sex dance has the potential to challenge these patriarchal relations by disconnecting gender from dance roles and creating more balanced roles. This study can meet the interest of those studing social sciences, especially gender studies, gay studies, social psychology or sociology.

The finding of the study suggests that the factors affecting the level of English proficiency among IIUM undergraduate students were not affected by gender but were affected by the duration of learning English. The factors that were contributing to the level of English proficiency among IIUM undergraduate students were language anxiety, students' attitude and also peers, parental and teacher influences. Miletta's study of preschool children in northern Italy, atReggio Emilia, reveals a story of classroom interactions where gender differences are not part of the equation for the youngsters. Her chapterbegs the question, "How does this environment empower all children, regardless of gender?" Two chapters provide a lens to the Montessorisetting for young children. Wilgus studies the gendered patterns of young women teaching at a Montessori school, while Irby, Rodriguez, and Lara-Alecio explore the intersections of culture and gender at a bilingual Montessori public school. Further examining the preschoolyears, Plaster and Schiller address the current brain research and examine the ways in which the adults that staff early child care programs, and the environments that they offer, play an important role in the development of our children.

The insufficiency and shortage of the pedagogical values of school textbooks have been proved by many researches. However, the universally published textbooks which are broadly utilized in informal contexts in our country have not gone under a close scrutiny yet. This study intends to evaluate American Headway series, one of the textbooks taught in over 140 countries throughout the world including Iran. The study is theoretically based on Littlejohn’s detailed framework (1998). The framework is one of the more objective and less impressionistic frameworks which seeks to evaluate materials as they are regardless of how they are utilized in ELT classrooms.

That study, based on previous research by the Pittsburgh Coro Center for Civic Leadership, had two objectives: to determine the demographics of boards, authorities, and commissions (BACs) in Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, and to issue recommendations on how to make appointments to BACs in the area more transparent and inclusive. The debate for higher female representation on corporate boards has become particularly intensive during the recent financial crisis. Scholars advocate that women are more risk-averse, more engaged with longer-term issues and tend to draw more attention to governance and ethics. Thus, it is suggested that due to the behavioural differences between men and women, more gender-balanced boards would have prevented a number of financial collapses. This assertion has triggered more detailed analyses of current statistics for women on boards in the European Union. A number of states have implemented various non-binding measures for improving female representation on boards. This brought them acclaim, yet no discernible results. Should we indeed insist to have gender-balanced boards, we need quotas. Evidence is of strong support.

How do students’ social identities, particularly their gender, influence their leadership practices and development? Using Kimberlé Crenshaw’s concept of intersectionality as a framework, this volume discusses existing and emergent research on gender and leadership and offers key strategies and on how leadership educators can engage students in these topics and provide contemporary critical thinking on how gender and leadership inform one another. This volume examines: the ways intersectionality can be used as a lens for gender and leadership, key considerations for developing and advancing leadership among women, men, and trans* students, programs and experiences grounded in critical self-reflection and leadership learning among students of all genders, and opportunities for leadership educators to navigate topics of gender and leadership, emphasizing their own self-work and avenues for affecting positive change. Contributing scholars share examples that are developmentally appropriate for high school and college students. This work is designed with leadership educators in mind, emphasizing theory into practice and highlighting the ways that leadership and gender can promote holistic, transformative learning for all students. The Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Student Leadership explores leadership concepts and pedagogical topics of interest to high school and college leadership educators. Issues are grounded in scholarship and feature practical applications and best practices in youth and adult leadership education.

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2008 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: European Union, grade: B+ (1.7), University of Auckland, 115 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: In the last years the European Union (EU) transformed the European gender regime towards gender equality thoroughly. This dissertation deals with the question of the EU's external influence on transforming societies. Is the external influence coherent with internal claims? Trade is the EU's most important external policy area. The EU is an economic giant based on the largest single market in the world. Thus the EU has power in and through trade. The EU makes increasingly the adaptation of normative standards acondition to access its market. Does the EU integrate also standards on gender equality? And does the EU transform gender regimes globally through trade? What impacts does the EU have on gender regimes? This dissertation examines gender impacts in the Sustainability Impact Assessments that show possible impacts of trade agreements between the EU and its partners. The analysis shows that gender is secondary to economic growth and not directed towards gender equality. As aconsequence the EU does not use its power through trade and the coherence of internal and external efforts is questionable.

Scientific Essay from the year 2011 in the subject Pedagogy - The Teacher, Educational Leadership, , language: English, abstract: Krieg (2005) in his review of impact of teacher gender on student gender states that while a large body of research focuses on the gender of students, less research explores the impacts of a teacher's gender on students (Hopf & Hatzichristou 1999 ). Evidence suggests that male teachers tend to be more authoritative whereas female teachers tend to be more supportive and expressive (Meece, 1987 ). A survey of 20 teachers indicates that male teachers are likely to select a more aggressive disciplinary approach toward boys while teachers of either gender tended to ignore boys' disruptive behavior than that of girls when the behavior was not aggressive (Rodriguez, 2002). Krieg (2005) further reveals that researchers have found that teachers interact differently with students of similar gender than they do with students of opposite gender Einarsson, C., & Granström, K. (2002 ) This includes evidence suggesting disciplinary procedures and proclivity to discipline vary by both student and teacher gender. Likewise, a teacher's perception of student characteristics and abilities appear to systematically vary by gender. Other studies find male students benefit at the expense of female students in the amount and quality of interaction received from teachers of both genders. What has yet to be determined is how these differences in disciplin...

Ivy Schweitzer The Work of Self-Representation. Lyric Poetry in Colonial New England

In The Work of Self-Representation Ivy Schweitzer examines early American poetry through the critical lens of gender. Her concern is not the inclusion of female writers into the canon; rather, she analyzes how the metaphors of "woman" and "feminine" function in Puritan religious and literary discourse to represent both the "otherness" of spiritual experience and the ways in which race and class function to keep the "other" in marginalized positions.Schwetizer argues that gender was for seventeenth-century new England -- and still is today -- a basic and most politically charged metaphor for the differences that shape identity and determine cultural position. To glimpse the struggle between gender ideology and experience, Schweitzer provides close readings of the poetry of four New Englanders writing between the Great Migration and the first wave of the Great Awakening: John Fiske, Edward Taylor, Anne Bradstreet, and Roger Williams.Schweitzer focuses exclusively on lyric poetry, she says, because a first-person speaker wrestling with the intricacies of individual consciousness provides fruitful ground for exploring the politics of voice and identity and especially problems of authority, intertextuality, and positionality. Fiske and Taylor define the orthodox tradition, and Bradstreet and Williams in different ways challenge it. Her treatment of the familiar poetry of Bradstreet and Taylor is solidly grounded in historical and literary scholarshi...

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,7, University of Hannover (Philosophisch Fakultaet), language: English, abstract: Men find themselves searching for their position in a world in which gender conceptions are drastically changed and redefined. The past discussions of women's roles have left their male counterparts in an undefined, blank space. Modern popular culture, such as the movie industry, uses the elusiveness of modern gender conceptions to question the antique hierarchy of the white male protagonist as the hero and savior of the world. Walter Hollstein (Was vom Manne uebrig blieb - Krise und Zukunft des straken Geschlechts) and R.W. Connell (Men and the Boys) investigate in their works the shift within masculine identity. In their research they make an attempt to answer the questions whether men need to be heroes, what roles their bodies play and how childhood (in regards to the parent-child relationship) effects the individual conception of masculinity. Chris Holmlund explores The Masculinity as Multiple Masquearde as the reinforcement of hegemonic power relations. And in Hard Bodies - Hollywood Masculinity in the Reagan Era Susan Jefferson provides a detailed observation of the beginnings of openly emphasized masculine body images in the 1980s. The result, is the strive of movie directors to create protagonists who are the representation of such a lost, white, heroic individual. Does this description of a lost,...

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2012 in the subject English - Miscellaneous, , course: Teaching English to the Speakers of Other Languages, language: English, abstract: This research aims to find out whether there is any impact on performance when students read authentic materials beside the textbooks. Students in Bangladesh often have difficulties in learning English as a foreign language for lack of appropriate learning materials in the classroom. Too often foreign language teaching texts in our country are designed either too difficult or too easy for students. Without appropriate texts that suit them, learners spend long hours in the classroom accomplishing very little in the long run. Most of them remain weak in reading, writing, listening and speaking in English properly even after receiving higher education. Students' performance varies according to the type of materials given to them. A significant amount of research shows that there is something about the type of textbooks/materials that should be looked into and evaluated carefully so that necessary adaptation can be made for effective learning to take place. When learners are introduced to variety of materials, it is necessary to understand what impact they have on the learners.
