Scientific Study from the year 2016 in the subject Biology - Genetics / Gene Technology, Mar Augusthinose College, language: English, abstract: Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus) is commonly grown in home gardens of tropical and sub-tropical countries. The fruit contains high levels of carbohydrates, protein, starch, calcium and vitamins. Jack fruit has diverse medicinal uses, especially anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-cancer and anti-fungal activity. Jackfruit is considered to be an underutilized fruit where most of the fruits get wasted due to ignorance, lack of post harvest technology and gaps in supply chain systems. Jackfruit contains more protein, calcium, iron, vitamins and other essential nutrients as compared to the common fruits. To find out the morphological variation among jack fruits among Kerala we conducted an elaborative survey and found out the parameters such as tree characteristics, leaf characterises or fruit characteristics of selected samples. Both qualitative and quantitative data are measured using field visits and standard methods and morphological indicators; after analysis of data there is a morphological variation among the jack fruit samples identified. Advances in the genetic markers such as RFLP and PCR based methods are more reliable for identification of genetic diversity than morphological markers although each technique has advantages and limitations. Tea plant, Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze, used to produce the oldest and most popular non-alcoholic soft beverage across the world, is one of the most important cash crops of many countries, including Vietnam. Known as a freely cross-pollinated plant, with many overlapping morphological, biochemical and physiological attributes, tea can not be separated into discrete groups to identify various taxa. Since hybrids are used and clonal propagation is recommended, genetic diversity of tea can be diminished if care is not taken. Information on taxonomic characteristics, genetic diversity and biogeography of tea in the living collections may help in identifying genotypes with high productive potentials which could be used as progenitors to improve the existing genetic base of commercially grown tea. Revealing the genetic diversity by using molecular markers has assisted breeders assigning appropriate parents to be used in crosses.

Litter size is affected by many environmental and genetic factors and interaction between them. The goal of this study was to determine covariance functions for litter size i.e. number of piglets born alive using random regression model. Further, the aim was to compare it with estimates of genetic components obtained by using repeatability and multiple-trait model.

Estimates of gene effects based on analysis of generation mean were obtained for nine traits in three crosses in castor (Ricinus communis L.): SKP-84 x DCS-94, VP-1 x DCS-94 and GEETA x GC-3. The study material includes P1, P2, F1, F2, BC1 and BC2 generations of these crosses.The individual scaling test and joint scaling test indicated that an additive-dominance model was adequate in three traits viz., length of main raceme, number of effective branches per plant and seed index in the cross VP-1 x DCS-94. The analysis showed the presence of additive, dominance and epistasis gene effects for the traits.However, to exploit both additive and non-additive gene action reciprocal recurrent or biparental mating procedure may be adopted for improvement of traits. The fruit provide two MJ per kg/wet weight of ripe perianth and contain high levels of carbohydrates, protein, starch, calcium and vitamins. Jackfruit has diverse medicinal uses especially for anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti-cancer and anti-fungal activity. MatK (maturase K) genes are fast evolving, highly variant regions of plant chloroplast DNA that can serve as potential biomarkers for DNA coding and also in generating primers for plants with identification of unique motif regions. Advances in the genetic markers such as RFLP and PCR based methods are more reliable for identification of genetic diversity than morphological markers, although each technique has advantages and limitations. The objective of this research work was to estimate the level of genetic diversity and to assess genetic relationships among six varieties of jackfruit using 'matK gene' based on PCR technique and RFLP markers. Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Agrarian Studies, Bahir Dar University, course: animal genetics and breeding, language: English, abstract: ABSTRACTPhenotypic characterization of indigenous chicken ecotypes was conducted in North Wollo from January 2011 to May 2012 with the objectives of characterizing indigenous chicken and their production system. Simultaneously, identification of development intervention for improved utilization of chicken genetic resources was also identified. In the first part of data collection, one focused group discussion per agro-ecological zones was held. Then, administration of well-structured questionnaire and morphometric measurement were employed. Measured quantitative traits of chicken among the three altitudes were analyzed by linear model of SAS 2002 for male and female chickens separately. Subsequently, mean value of each traits were compared using Tukey's mean comparison method. Multivariate analysis of principal component analysis, canonical discriminant, step-wise discriminant and clustering analysis was performed by SPSS 19.0 for male and female chicken ecotype separately. Nechi (17.6%), Tikur (12.6%) and Key (10.8%) plumage colour were found dominantly all over the study area. Findings of the focus group discussion revealed that there were morphologically differences among chickens of high altitude, mid altitude and low altitude study areas. In this book we present a study aimed to determine the morphological, biochemical (protein SDS-PAGE and isozyme) and molecular (RAPD- and ISSR-PCR) characteristics in different ecological types of milk thistle collected from Egyptian habitats and identify levels of active ingredients as a way towards improvement of this plant on the commercial leve. the results of SDS-PAGE data for twelve silybum accessions confirmed that there were negative markers. Also, the results of RAPD and ISSR-PCR data analysis confirm that there were two positive markers. Finally both positive and negative marker for the highest production of the fixed oil by primers HB12 and X06 and three positive markers the lowest production of the fixed oil by primers HB14 and HB15.

Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) is an important fruit crop in India and in subtropical countries of the world. This is subjected to various disease problems and bacterial blight caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. Punicae. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) based molecular markers are useful tools for different detecting genetic variation within populations of phytopathogens. The analysis of RAPD polymorphism in single cell isolates of X. axonopodis pv. punicae from different parts of Nashik districts revealed the occurrence of high level of polymorphism (79.87%) indicating wide and diverse genetic base.Among 10 primers used to detect the genetic diversity of isolates, 6 primers exhibited good amplification. Remaining 4 primers showed very poor amplification.

Data about rare genetic disorders in Iraqi patients is not available. Iraq is a country that has been in turmoil due to the devastating impact of three major wars and a long period of imposed economic sanctions over three decades. The development of genetic research in this country has been markedly hampered. Relatively common genetic disorders in Iraq include Down's syndrome, hemoglobinopathies (B-thalassemias, and sickle cell anemia), glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase (G6 PD) deficiency, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and achondroplasia. In an experience extending over about 20 years we have documented the rarest genetics in Iraqi patients. Some of these disorders are very rare through out the world such as Coffin Siris syndrome and cutis laxa type II (Debre type) some of these disorders is very rare in Arab population such as Nephropathic cystinosis and Aicardi syndrome. A new clinical association of a genetic nature has been observed for the first time in Iraqi patients. A very rare combination of two genetic disorders was also observed.

The pollen morphological descriptions and illustrations are available for use in palynological investigations and plant taxonomic studies. Since many of the palynological studies are based on the detailed knowledge of the pollen morphology, in this study the pollen morphology of some of the members of the family Rosaceae and Polygonaceae was examined. We hope this study will contribute to the preparation of pollen atlas of Darjeeling Hills, India. Pollen grains belonging to these species were examined with light Photomicroscope (LM) as well as Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) (for some species of Rosaceae) as regards some morphological features, principally: pollen shape; size; aperture characters; sculpture and structure of the exine. This study provides some insight into the features useful for pollen identification and problems that may be encountered when differentiating pollen of related taxa. Since last few decades, morpho-systamatic studies have contributed to the evaluation of many taxonomomic systems. This approach of the different species and genus under the family would be needed to evaluate the classification of Rosaceae and Polygonaceae proposed by various authors.

The work focused on three negative emotional traits (frustration, anxiety and lack of creativity) that are the core of a negative class environment. The research of Ferguson, Frost& Hall (2012) explores some of the physical effects such as increased blood pressure, anger, headaches, and some psychological effects such as anxiety, nervousness, tension, frustration and panic, that some teachers might experience when they are exposed to situations of high amount of stress. Furthermore, those effects can affect teacher performance when teaching classes. Two case studies described the situations that affect teachers' performance, how teachers reacted when experiencing those situations and what the outcomes are in the classroom environment. The main situations found during the study are related with students' behavior, students' attitude about class activities, school demands regarding class structure and the amount of English use during classes.

DNA typing of non-human DNA is a fast developing area of research and professional practice. Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2018 in the subject Biology - Miscellaneous, grade: 82% Aggregate In Bachelor, , course: Bachelor In Agriculture, language: English, abstract: The present research consists of 12 rice genotypes and the experiment was conducted during June- November, 2017 in Randomized Block Design with three replication at NARC, Kumaltar.The data were recorded for ten quantitative character to study genetic variability, heritability, genetic advance and correlation coefficient analysis. Analysis of variance among 12 genotypes showed significant difference for all characters studied except non- effective tiller. Grain yield had positive significant correlation with SPAD and positive correlation with 1000 grain weight, flag leaf area, days of 50% flowering, plant height, number of effective tiller and panicle length and negative significant correlation with number of non-effective tiller and negative correlation with days of 90%maturity. Moderate genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) and phenotypic coefficient variation (PCV) was observed for flag leaf area and followed by grain yield and number of effective tiller, that these characters could be used as selection for crop improvement. High estimates of heritability were observed for days of 50% flowering and followed by panicle length, flag leaf area, test weight and days of 90% maturity. The concept of breeding cultivars with wide adaptation is itself well adapted by researchers. In fact, there are two broad categories of breeding strategies in crops: broad adaptation and location-specific adaptation. Considering the complexity of the growing environments in a country and the need to maximize yield, the strategy should be directed toward developing varieties with location-specific adaptation. Reliance on a few varieties renders crops growing highly vulnerable to pest and disease outbreaks. Varietal interactions depend on the environments, but these interactions involve the individual genotype's physiological and genetic traits. In order to identify physiological traits related with environmental factors, there is a need for an effective statistical procedure. Additive main effects and multiplicative interaction (AMMI) analysis is ideal for this task. An AMMI statistical analysis is introduced as a tool to separate and quantify the GxE associated with yield and physiological components. This technique uses better statistical analysis for GxE partition and the bi-plot graphs useful in analyzing which genotype "wins" in an environment.

The present investigation was carried out in Randomized Block Design during rabi season of 2005-06 with 25 genotypes derived from wide and intervarietal crosses and 5 checks of chickpea at Crop Research Center of G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, Uttarakhand. The observations were recorded on days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, plant height, primary branches/, plant width, pods/ plant, seeds/pod, 100 seed weight and grain yield/plant to study genotypic, phenotypic variability, genetic advance, character association, genetic divergence and genetic relationship using SDS -PAGE. The ANOVA revealed highly significant genetic differences among genotypes for all the characters studied. High values of C.V. were observed for grain yield/plant, 100 seed weight, primary braches/plant and seeds/ pod. Amongst 25 genotypes only PG055 and PG053 were significantly superior for plant width and grain yield/ plant, respectively. Analysis of genotypic character association study revealed highly significant and positive association of days to maturity with plant height (0.496), seeds/ pod and days to 50% flowering (0.491), primary branches/plant and pods/ plant

The present study was undertaken; to evaluate the response of recurrent selection derived lines by the testing of (C3) derived lines for genetic variability, genetic advance and heritability and to assess the effect of selection on other quantitative traits. The 16 half-sib families were selected from 3rd cycle of recurrent selection were grown for evaluation in randomized block design in rabi 2009 -10 along with check varieties Bhima and A1. The expected genetic advance expressed as per cent of population mean at 10 per cent was high for seed yield per plot (48.44) followed by seed yield per plant (28.88). The expected genetic advance per cent over Bhima at 10 per cent selection intensity was high for seed yield per plot (28.27) followed by seed yield per plant (22.78). In safflower seed yield per plant was positively and significantly correlated with days to maturity, number of capitula per plant, number of seeds per capitulum and 100 seed weight. Days to maturity and seed yield per plant had exhibited significant and positive correlation. Two half-sib families were identified for testing in preliminary yield evaluation trial

Growth, development and yield of soybean are a result of a variety's genetic potential interacting with environment and farming practices. Experiments were carried out in two locations for determining the resistance of some soybean genotypes to the cotton leaf worm. Beside that, identification of molecular genetic markers linked to insect resistance was also done. An attempt was done to get some new resistant hybrids through execution hybridization between these cultivars. Plant height, numbers of branches and pods per plant and seed yield per plant were decreased significantly by the infestation of cotton leaf worm (Spodoptera littoralis) as compared with soybean plants grown in Giza region (non - stressed treatment). The results of SDS-PAGE revealed a total number of 21 bands with molecular weight (MW) ranging form about 319.63 to 15.568 KDa. 5 primers showed specific ISSR markers for cotton leaf worm with 6 positive markers for cotton leaf worm resistance appeared in the resistant genotypes, while 2 negative markers for susceptibility for cotton leaf worm were present in the susceptible genotypes.

This study focuses on the conceptualization of Roma ethnicity in the works of human geneticists. In this analysis I apply the methods of intersectionality and use expert interviews to collect data. The collected material is analyzed from a non-Romani feminist constructivist perspective. In the research of human geneticists the categories of diseases are at the centre and they link the Roma category systematically to genetic disorders. I argue however that this connection non-intentionally stabilizes the Roma category on a molecular biological level because this aspect fails to take into consideration the performative character of social categories. Geneticists by attaching the Roma category to a biological marker homogenize the culturally fragmented and diverse gypsy ethnicities and they reconstruct the Romani people's social structures along the lines of traditional gender hierarchies.

DNA typing of non-human DNA is a fast developing area of research and professional practice. The application of DNA typing in wildlife forensic science is one of these prime uses of DNA typing and is gaining increasing profile. The use of DNA profiling in wildlife forensic science falls into two broad areas: species testing and genetic linkage. Species testing answers the question ‘what species is this?’ and genetic linkage answers the question ‘did these two samples come from the same organism or population?’ Wildlife DNA Analysis: Applications in Forensic Science provides an accessible introduction to both of these key areas. Clearly structured throughout, the introduction highlights the different types of crime where these techniques are regularly used. This chapter includes a discussion as to who performs forensic wildlife examinations, the standardisation and validation of methods, and the role of the expert witness in this type of alleged crime.
