Thiruvenkadan A.K Genetics of coat colour in horses

For thousands of years horses have been linked to humankind, as beasts of burden and in war. In most recent times, the emphasis of use has been on sport and recreation. Though, the colour of horses has little to do with its performance, it is a primary means of identification and also the first indicator of questionable parentage. Tremendous progress in horse's coat colour genetics resulted in identification of different colour patterns with their mode of inheritance. The main aim of this book is collect all the available data related to coat colour patterns and bring together non-united areas of research. This book covers all major directions in horse coat colour inheritance. The second chapter provides information about melanogenesis and genetics of pigmentation. Chapters 3 and 4 are devoted to detailed description of different coat colour patterns. The molecular basis of different coat colour patterns is presented in Chapter 5. This book is addressed to broad audience, which includes students, lecturers, researchers and horse breeders working in the industry. As such it is hoped that the information presented will provide valuable guidance to scientists and breeders.

If horses should be given daily opportunity to spend free time outside in paddocks is of constant debate among those involved with horses. In this book we follow 841 horses of different breeds and categories, in the design of a cross-sectional study, during a period of 2 years. We investigate if there is any basis for the most common concerns, namely risk of injuries, when keeping horses in paddocks. Moreover this book covers a wide range regarding stable environment, management and animal health. Special interest aims at investigating whether lack of free time spent in paddocks, possibility for social contact between horses, time budget for feeding given as well as keeping horses on muddy grounds affects the prevalence of behavioural disturbances (wood-chewing, crib-biting, weaving and box-walking) and the health of the horse (problems related to the hooves/legs, respiratory- and digestive systems). Together with a solid literature review the revealing facts from this research, presented easily comprehensible, should be equally useful to professionals working in the field of horses as well as anyone else who want to enhance horses Quality of Life.

Written by two internationally recognised experts, Equitation Science is the first book to draw together the principles of this emerging field into a much-needed coherent source of information. The goal of equitation science is to enhance our understanding of how horses think and learn, and to use their natural behaviour to train, ride or compete with them in as fair a manner as possible. The welfare consequences of training and competing horses under different protocols are explored. Drawing on traditional and emergent techniques, this book incorporates learning theory into an ethical equine training system suitable for all levels. It also focuses on evidence-based approaches that improve rider safety. «Equitation Science is one of those rare books that is going to change the way we train and manage horses forever. It brings together a fundamental understanding of the way horses think and behave and presents a system of modern training that has the welfare of the horse at its core – it must be the foundation work for the next generation of professional and amateur riders and trainers. Riders will ride better, trainers will train better and we will have happier, healthier horses.» —Wayne Channon, International Grand Prix Rider «I found this a very interesting and enlightening book. Equitation Science will help anyone involved with horses to understand them more and to be more effective in their training and education. The knowledge this brings to anyone involved with horses should help to make the horses’ lives easier and therefore allow the partnership between humans and equines to flourish.» —Yogi Breisner, British Eventing Performance Manager «Equitation Science is an ambitious and thorough look at an enormous range of areas, approaches and factors concerning the training of horses. The authors have an underlying theme to their text of scientifically assessing and then also promoting the use of ethical and humane methods of horse training to increase all sport horses’ welfare and happiness within their sporting requirements. Equitation Science also provides an invaluable insight as to how and why what we do with our horses actually works.» —Paul Tapner, Professional International Advanced Eventing Rider, Badminton CCI**** 2010 Winner

Despite the substantial interest in landscape genetics from the scientific community, learning about the concepts and methods underlying the field remains very challenging. The reason for this is the highly interdisciplinary nature of the field, which combines population genetics, landscape ecology, and spatial statistics. These fields have traditionally been treated separately in classes and textbooks, and very few scientists have received the interdisciplinary training necessary to efficiently teach or apply the diversity of techniques encompassed by landscape genetics. To address the current knowledge gap, this book provides the first in depth treatment of landscape genetics in a single volume. Specifically, this book delivers fundamental concepts and methods underlying the field, covering particularly important analytical methods in detail, and presenting empirical and theoretical applications of landscape genetics for a variety of environments and species. Consistent with the interdisciplinary nature of landscape genetics, the book combines an introductory, textbook like section with additional sections on advanced topics and applications that are more typical of edited volumes. The chapter topics and the expertise of the authors and the editorial team make the book a standard reference for anyone interested in landscape genetics. The book includes contributions from many of the leading researchers in landscape genetics. The group of scientists we have assembled has worked on several collaborative projects over the last years, including a large number of peer reviewed papers, several landscape genetics workshops at international conferences, and a distributed graduate seminar on landscape genetics. Based on the experiences gained during these collaborative teaching and research activities, the book includes chapters that synthesize fundamental concepts and methods underlying landscape genetics (Part 1), chapters on advanced topics that deserve a more in depth treatment (Part 2), and chapters illustrating the use of concepts and methods in empirical applications (Part 3). This structure ensures a high usefulness of the book for beginning landscape geneticists and experienced researchers alike, so that it has a broad target audience. At least one of the four co editors is involved in almost every chapter of the book, thereby ensuring a high consistency and coherency among chapters.

The Handbook of Behavioral Genetics and Phenotyping represents an integrative approach to neurobehavioural genetics; worldwide experts in their field will review all chapters. Advanced overviews of neurobehavioural characteristics will add immense value to the investigation of animal mutants and provide unique information about the genetics and behavioural understanding of animal models, under both normal and pathological conditions. Cross-species comparisons of neurobehavioural phenotypes will pave the way for an evolutionary understanding of behaviour. Moreover, while biological sciences are progressing towards a holistic approach to investigate the complexity of organisms (i.e., “systems biology” approach), an integrated analysis of behavioural phenotyping is still lacking. The Handbook of Behavioral Genetics and Phenotyping strengthens the cross-talk within disciplines that investigate the fundamental basis of behaviour and genetics. This will be the first volume in which traditionally distant fields including genomics, behaviour, electrophysiology, neuroeconomics, and computational neuroscience, among others, are evaluated together and simultaneously accounted for during discussions of future perspectives.

What if evidence demonstrated horses have slain lions, tigers, pumas, wolves, hyenas and humans?Contemporary writers have successfully airbrushed murderous and meat-eating horses out of literature. What if Shakespeare, Sherlock Holmes and Steve McQueen provided artistic evidence to refute that claim? Thanks to global equestrian amnesia, the crucial role played by horses in recent history has been lost to mankind. Yohannes Hailu Mehari Practices and Problems of Performance Management Teachers

The issue of performance management has not been a popular concept on schools. It seems that performance appraisal or evaluations are widely used terms in assessing the performance of teachers. However, these days the issue of performance management that focuses mainly on the professional development of teachers becomes agenda in most education system. However, limited academic literature exists on how to best-practiced performance management of teachers.Various approaches of performance measurement of teachers have been used and most of them emphasized on controlling mechanisms. Issues like feedback, motivation and communications with teachers in performance appraisal are not areas of attention. This book, therefore, provides distinctly different approaches of Performance evaluation that mainly emphasize on developing the performance of teachers rather than controlling. As a result, five interrelated dimensions of performance management are analyzed. The analysis should help shade some light on the performance management of teachers in Ethiopia, and should be especially useful to professional in education fields, or anyone else who may be interested in school affairs.

Myriam Nickels The Criticism behind Gattaca.s Genetic Apartheid Scenario

Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Other, grade: 1.3, University of Koblenz-Landau (Anglistik), language: English, abstract: The new advances and tendencies in the application of genetic science evoke ethical, social, and legal concerns, as the immense progress in genetics is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, the completion of the Human Genome Project at the beginning of the 21st century and the recent progress in genetics come along with obvious benefits in genomic medicine such as better diagnosis of diseases and gene therapy. However, on the other hand, the new genetics bring along worries that the new genetics could lead to a society that is less tolerant of disability and (genetic) diversity. Moreover, after successfully having intervened in the transformation of animals and plants to human's liking, humans are now on the verge of manipulating the human genome so as to perfect the human species possibly, since the necessary genetic technology is now available. The movie Gattaca builds upon the scientific and technological advances in genetics in the late 20th century and displays a dystopian "not-too-distant" future. In the portrayed future, excessive genetic screening and embryo manipulation have brought about a rigidly hierarchical society grounded on genetic discrimination. Undeniably, there is an insurmountable social gap between these two classes. Gattaca thoughtfully portrays the lives of differ...

Denise M. Dowdall From Cincinnati to the Colorado Ranger. The Horsemanship of Ulysses S. Grant

Ulysses Grant, the highest-ranking general of the American Civil War and 18th president of the United States, was a surprisingly reluctant soldier and an even more reluctant president. But he was always an enthusiastic horseman. Rich with anecdote, humour and humanity, From Cincinnati to the Colorado Ranger tells of the extraordinary collection of horses that inhabited Grant's world. From the placid plough horses of his youth to the brave war chargers that "carried the destiny of the nation on their backs". From the pampered trotters of the Gilded Age to the exotic stallions whose blood enriched a new breed of American horse. The story of these horses more than illuminates the life and culture of a great American.

Neurodevelopmental disorders arise from disturbances to various processes of brain development, which can manifest in diverse ways. They encompass many rare genetic syndromes as well as common, heritable conditions such as intellectual disability, autism, ADHD, schizophrenia and many types of epilepsy. The Genetics of Neurodevelopmental Disorders examines recent revolutionary advances in our understanding of the genetics of these disorders, exploring both basic discoveries and the translation of new findings into the clinical setting. The book begins by examining the genetic architecture and etiology of neurodevelopmental disorders. It describes the striking recent progress in identifying pathogenic mutations, which are grouped here based on the neurodevelopmental processes impacted. Subsequent chapters consider the use of cellular and animal models to elucidate the cascading consequences of such mutations, from molecular and cellular levels to emergent effects on neural circuits, brain systems and subsequent psychological development. The text concludes by examining the important clinical implications of the recent advances in the field, from recognition of the genetic causes in individual patients to development of new treatments and interventions. A timely synthesis, The Genetics of Neurodevelopmental Disorders is a unique and essential resource for neuroscientists, geneticists, neurologists and psychiatrists and an accessible and up-to-date overview for medical and science students.

D. S. Tamblyn The Horse in War. Horses . Mules in the Allied Armies During the First World War, 1914-18

The last great war of the horseThe role of the 'war horse' particularly during its twilight years during the First World War has recently become the focus of much interest. All armies have used horses in wartime as cavalry and mounted infantry, as officers chargers, for artillery or for transport and supply. Some large nations, because the horse formed a central role in its domestic life, became more associated with horses and horsemanship in the period when mechanised transport was making its first halting appearance onto the field of conflict. Russia was famous for its Cossacks and among the countries of the British Empire and Commonwealth the accomplished riders of Australia, New Zealand and, especially noteworthy, Canada-the home of the author of this book. Naturally, the author is concerned with the activities of the Canadian Cavalry Brigade, but his book examines in detail the role of horses in every aspect of the Great War. He was not oblivious to the suffering of horses in war though, he clearly demonstrates a great affection for them in their military role. The book concludes with pictures and vignettes of individual horses of renown in the Canadian Army and a short piece on the service of dogs.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Marc Vogel Implementation of a Performance Attribution System in a Funds Management Company

Inhaltsangabe:Introduction: Within this thesis fundamentals of performance attribution are treated as well as the practical implementation of such a system. However, for many people who already asked to receive a copy of this work, the most important part will be the analysis of the (partly internet based) questionnaire revolving around performance attribution. The theoretical part contains the fundamentals of portfolio theory and the constructive CAPM, followed by basics of portfolio management. Next topics are the estimation of risk and performance for investment portfolios. The finishing touch is done by introduction of performance attribution theories handling both, equity and bond attribution. Within the practical part a short analysis of the affected asset management company is performed, accompanied by research of performance presentation. A questionnaire has been sent to 80 non-banks of the German HDAX index as well as to all members of the BVI. Furthermore an internet based version of the questionnaire has been introduced to a large number of institutional clients. The analysis of this questionnaire is one of the topics of this work. For the affected company the results from the questionnaire are used to identify the competitors’ possibilities and the clients’ needs, resulting in fundamental ideas for the catalogue of requirements. The analysis of the investment process and based on this the choice and the implementation of a performance attribution system are the la...

The author writes:'Within the pages of this book you will discover the horse in a new light. This is about the horses of the past, and the people who cared for them, whether bush moke, carriage horse, ridden hack, or racing pony.''This was the age of the blacksmith, saddler and coach builder. When you wrote to the paper for advice on horse diseases and injuries. When strange ideas abounded (strangles is not contagious, for example). Where palomino horses were called Creamies, pinto horses were called Piebald or Skewbald, and Quarter Horses were virtually unknown.''Here is a glimpse into the old fashioned remedies, cures for vices, and treatment for injuries. Remedies such as goose fat for a cough, and blistering agents for lameness.''And stories of the sagacious horse. The mare who told the farmer that her foal had fallen down a well, and the horse who stood by a rock to assist his injured rider to remount. Another who visited the blacksmith on his own when a shoe was lost, only leaving when a new shoe was nailed on.''I had fun sifting through these articles to find those of interest. I learned a lot. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I have enjoyed putting it together.'

Payam Haerifar Performance Management in Tesco

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, University of Derby, course: Business economics - Performance Management, language: English, abstract: Performance is explained superficially, which is the achievement of quantified objectives. Performance has an important connotation that is the way that people choose to achieve the objectives. Therefore, performance means process and manner of functioning and operating (or behaviours) to attain beforehand desirable goals (or results) (Brumbach, 1988). The mixed model of performance management is suggested by Armstrong (2006) which is based on these simultaneous elements of performance that are behaviour and result. The considerable aspect of organisational performance management is to maintain the goal congruence. Performance management aligns the organisation's objectives with the individuals' goals. Many performance management theories apportion this alignment as a main endeavour of the performance management process such as Balanced Scorecard. Besides, performance management could converge to strategic development by some modification of its methods and facilitates indirect control of employees by giving a clear target (Otley and Fakiolas, 2000; Hemmer, 1998; Egan, 1995). Organisations usually utilise two main theories to be competent firms in their markets. Those theories are Porter's theory (1980, 1989) and resources and competenc...
