Robert Ogman Against the Nation. Anti-National Politics in Germany

Following the German reunification process in the 1990s, a new movement appeared in Germany. This movement rejected all forms of nationalism, including the desirability and legitimacy of national communities, borders, and the existence of the nation-state itself. Against the Nation covers the background of this movement—the rise of Neo-Nazism, racist violence, restriction in immigration policies, and growing state power—as well as its urge to organize society around other principles than nationality.By examining the campaigns and documents of the various anti-national tendencies in Germany during this period, Robert Ogman takes a fresh look at the question of nationalism and its relationship to Left politics.

Tom Warden Creating a Competitive Advantage for Small Nations Through Branding

Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Marketing, Corporate Communication, CRM, Market Research, Social Media, grade: A, University of Auckland, language: English, abstract: This study addresses the research question; to what extent can nation branding create a competitive advantage for small nations? The concept of nation branding had its origins in the post-Cold War realities of a global neo-liberal economy, occurring as a spin-off from commercial brand management practices. For a small nation, the pressures of risk entailed in foreign exchange and trade transactions, cultural and political vulnerabilities are beyond the capacity of many to control, therefore nation branding which is promoted as giving a competitive advantage to nations, is an attractive consideration. This study examines and discusses the practice and study of nation branding and the possibility of imposing strategic management framework upon what had been largely a marketing-communications led concept. From the literature the characteristics of ineffective nation branding and the ethical considerations entailed in addressing a nation as a 'product' are reviewed. Implications for the stakeholders - the citizens and residents of a nation, and policymakers seeking a competitive advantage for their small nation are also reviewed. Cases of intentional small nation branding in Eastern Europe and New Zealand are compared to a case on Finland, where competitive advantag...

"I was seven years old when Hitler came to power," writes Paul Kester. In these recollections he tells about how the events of 1930s Germany affected him and his family, as seen through the eyes of a young Jewish boy. His story continues with his escape to Sweden on a Kindertransport. He describes his years in Sweden, where he spent the war years, escaping the fate of his parents, much of his family, and many of his friends who were murdered by the Nazis. By the age of 16, he was living on his own in Stockholm. With the end of the war, he traveled to the United States, as well as returning to Germany. The book concludes with his immigration to, and life in, the United States.

Their importance lies in their ability to bridge the universal and the particular-the universality of human values and the particularity of memories rooted in local human experiences. In Human Rights and Memory, Levy and Sznaider trace the growth of human rights discourse since World War II and interpret its deployment of memories as a new form of cosmopolitanism, exemplifying a dynamic through which global concerns become part of local experiences, and vice versa.

Robert Peprah-Gyamfi FROM GREENHORN TO SENIOR BOY My Secondary School Days

In this interesting and absorbing book, the author, who overcame adversity growing up in the humble surroundings of his little village Mpintimpi in rural Ghana to qualify as a medical doctor, graduating as he did from the prestigious medical school in Hanover, Germany, recounts his secondary school days as a boarder. For young readers the book is invaluable, providing unlimited encouragement by a writer who himself overcame apparent insurmountable difficulties in his educational career. Mature readers, too, will find many memories stirred, memories to make them laugh and even, perhaps, shed a tear of remorse. They will find in this book echoes of the trials, tribulations and joys of their own schooldays, for human nature is the same wherever we are brought up. Many of these readers will surely relate to the tribulations of initiation ceremonies and traditions when they joined a new school or even a new university. And then what student did not sit up late through the night to undertake mental 'mining' expeditions the night before an exam? There is a whole range of memories like these that will be evoked in this book. The book is a source of encouragement for the young, but will be read with a great deal of pleasure and nostalgia by older readers.

Birsen Banu Okutan Woman and Nation in Turkey

The relation between woman and nation is a controversial issue which covers a significant part in the feminist literature and gender theories. The first and foremost theoretical study about "woman and nation" is the theory of Yuval Davis and Anthias (1989) who hold that the women are participants of the nation from five aspects, that is, "biological reproducers", "reproducers of the boundaries", "transmitters of culture", "signifiers of ethnic-national differences" and "participants of national struggles". The aim of this study is to examine whether it is possible to assert such a relation for Turkey through the discourse analysis of women journals Kadın Gazetesi (1947-1950) and Kadın Sesi (1957-1960) which are the products of a different periods of the republican regime.

Memories Unwound is a collection of free verse poems and prose that tap into the thoughts, feelings and ideas of the author. Each piece aims to go beyond just words and reveal an emotion; love, pain or happiness and by the end of it, the prospect of attaining solace. The author uses ‘memories’ as a title to emphasise that it is universally relatable – as readers should find at least one (or more) piece(s) that reminds them of a previous experience that they have had/ emotion that they have felt, hence becoming a ‘memory’ that is unwound in this book. Each piece aims to fuel the realisation of sentiments that fabricate our very being, and by the end of the book readers are shown the possibility of hope, redemption, closing ‘old chapters’ and moving on to make new memories.

E. Alexander Powell Fighting in Flanders. The Experiences of an American Journalist During the Opening Campaigns of the First World War in Europe

The opening shots of a great conflictThe German plan of attack in 1914 involved a giant 'hooking' movement commencing within Germany itself and then advancing through Luxembourg and neutral Belgium towards the Continental channel ports before arcing south-east to embrace the French heartland. France would be taken from the rear of Verdun on the River Meuse to Orleans on the Loire. Paris-caught squarely in the middle of this giant sweep-would be literally enveloped. History shows that the plan did not go the way the Germans intended and their advance, stopped by the French and the B. E. F, meant the war became stalemate of trenches, wire and mud, a war of attrition that led to the eventual defeat of Germany. Initially, however, it seemed as though nothing could prevent the advance of the vast juggernaut of that was the German army. The first stages of the Great War went very much according to plan and the first nation casualty was Belgium. The war quite literally rolled over this small nation and students of the conflict have tended to overlook these important events as a tiny nation fought to defend itself against hopeless odds. The author of this book was an American journalist who was present in Europe at the time these events were taking place, he saw the campaign unfold with his own eyes and has recorded what he saw for posterity. This is an interesting book, about the outbreak of hostilities to the arrival on the field of battle of the British Army, told from an ...

Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Psychology - Personality Psychology, grade: Merit, Sheffield Hallam University, course: MSc Psychology, language: English, abstract: This mixed methods study investigated the effects of autobiographical memories on future thinking and decision-making. The quantitative rating scores served as a means of obtaining a direct correlation to investigate which areas memory were most significant to future thinking/decision-making, self-reported by the participants. The study consisted primarily of a thematic analysis of participants qualitative responses in relation to three themes to test the three proposed hypotheses of the study. Firstly, autobiographical memories are primarily functions of goal construction. Secondly, those memories are congruent to the self, and likely to place the participant at the centre of all previous experiences/events. Thirdly, since it is hypothesised that there will be an egocentric element to the responses, this should coincide with increased pronoun density. The third thematic discourse theme has analysed selective examples of the use of (I, me and my) in qualitative literary expressions recorded. A total of 46 participants participated, with 33 fully completing the survey. The richness of the memories suggests novel experimentation may be needed in future analysis; participant discourses were widespread. However family and school memories were rated as the most significant influences on future thi...

Fundraising may not seem like an obvious lens through which to examine the process of nation-building, but in this highly original book Lainer-Vos shows that fundraising mechanisms – ranging from complex transnational gift-giving systems to sophisticated national bonds – are organizational tools that can be used to bind dispersed groups to the nation. Sinews of the Nation treats nation-building as a practical organizational accomplishment and examines how the Irish republicans and the Zionist movement secured financial support in the United States during the first half of the twentieth century. Comparing the Irish and Jewish experiences, whose trajectories of homeland-diaspora relations were very different, provides a unique perspective for examining how national movements use economic transactions to attach disparate groups to the national project. By focusing on fundraising, Lainer-Vos challenges the common view of nation-building as only a matter of forging communities by imagining away internal differences: he shows that nation-building also involves organizing relationships so as to allow heterogeneous groups to maintain their difference and yet contribute to the national cause. Nation-building is about much more than creating unifying symbols: it is also about creating mechanisms that bind heterogeneous groups to the nation despite and through their differences.

Samuel Skipper The Politics of Immigration. Is Germany moving towards a Multicultural Society.

The topic of immigration is never simple. Questions such as 'who belongs to society?' and 'how do you define national identity?', or 'what values are needed to maintain a coexisting society?' are extremely difficult to answer. Global migration introduces unprecedented challenges for conceptualising the integration of immigrants. On a European scale, Germany can be said to represent the first destination for immigrants since its unification in 1989. On a global level, Germany is the second largest immigrant receiving country after the United States. Nevertheless, only recently has Germany recognised and admitted that it is an ethnically and culturally diverse society. Before the 1998 elections, successive governments have always stuck to the maxim that Germany is 'not a country of immigration'.The infamous phrase came under increased pressure with the electoral victory of the Red-Green coalition in 1998. New laws regarding immigration, integration and citizenship were on the agenda with the aim of replacing the traditional ethnocultural model of German nationhood with a more liberal and modern model by moving away from the concepts of Volk and ius sanguinis. The conservative CDU, however, accused the Schroder government of trying to jeopardize German cultural identity, causing a fierce debate known as the Leitkultur (Guiding culture) debate. On the one side of this debate there were the conservative CDU politicians who viewed Germany in ethno-nat...

Friederich Karl Wiehe Germany and the Jewish Question

Translated by Eckhart Verlag. Annotated by Francis Dupont. First published by the Institute for the Study of the Jewish Question in Berlin in 1938, this book became the standard work which set out to explain the policies of National Socialist Germany to the outside world.Starting with the time of the first anti-Jewish riots in Alexandria to the Age of Enlightenment, this work shows how host nations have attempted to welcome and assimilate Jewish immigrants—but that these attempts have always ended in anti-Semitism caused by Jewish behavior. It then moves on to a discussion of Jewish influence in Germany, starting with a detailed breakdown of Jewish numbers and areas of concentration with the 1871–1919 borders of Germany. In seven sections it explains how Jews:– Dominated the German economy,– Were the most financially corrupt element in pre-1933 Germany,– Dominated the far left, socialist and revolutionary parties, ran the militant movements and were behind the numerous armed attempts to create a Soviet Germany,– Controlled the mainstream political parties during the interwar years,– Controlled the press in Germany,– Dominated German culture—including the literary, film and stage worlds,– Dominated the underworld of sexual and immoral degeneracy which characterized the “Weimar” years, and– Made up the lion’s share of organized criminality in Weimar Germany. Finally, this book provides the answer to the “two thousand year-old problem”—namely that a Jewish homeland is necessary—bu...

Different Germans, Many Germanies. New Transatlantic Perspectives

As much as any other nation, Germany has long been understood in terms of totalizing narratives. For Anglo-American observers in particular, the legacies of two world wars still powerfully define twentieth-century German history, whether through the lens of Nazi-era militarism and racial hatred or the nation's emergence as a "model" postwar industrial democracy. This volume transcends such common categories, bringing together transatlantic studies that are unburdened by the ideological and methodological constraints of previous generations of scholarship. From American perceptions of the Kaiserreich to the challenges posed by a multicultural Europe, it argues for-and exemplifies-an approach to German Studies that is nuanced, self-reflective, and holistic.

Mira Morgenstern Conceiving a Nation. The Development of Political Discourse in the Hebrew Bible

Current conflicts in both national and international arenas have undermined the natural, organic concept of nationhood as conventionally espoused in the nineteenth century. Conceiving a Nation argues that the modern understanding of the nation as a contested concept-as the product of a fluid and ongoing process of negotiation open to a range of livable solutions-is actually rooted in the Bible. This book draws attention to the contribution that the Bible makes to political discourse about the nation. The Bible is particularly well suited to this open-ended discourse because of its own nature as a text whose ambiguity and laconic quality render it constantly open to new interpretations and applicable to changing circumstances. The Bible offers a pluralistic understanding of different models of political development for different nations, and it depicts altering concepts of national identity over time. In this book, Morgenstern reads the Bible as the source of a dynamic critique of the ideas that are conventionally considered to be fundamental to national identity, treating in successive chapters the ethnic (Ruth), the cultural (Samson), the political (Jotham), and the territorial (Esther). Throughout, she explores a number of common themes, such as the relationship of women to political authority and the "strangeness" of Israelite political existence. In the Conclusion, she elucidates how biblical analysis can aid in recognition of modern claims to nationhood.

Josephenie Hendy Hebbert Twaska Yapti Tasbia - The Miskitu Motherland

""Yapti Tasbia - The Miskitu Motherland"" was written by the Matriarch of the Miskitu nation reflecting on her nation's Manifest Destiny of the Miskitu Kingdom to rise up and once again be a nation among nations by restoration of the legal government, their territorial boundaries, and national sovereignty. The book records the Miskitu people who have endured degrading conditions of life, genocide, enslavement and poverty since 1894.Throughout their history, from the first Miskitu kingdom contact with the Spanish and British, the author details how each nation's own interests circumvented the rights of the Miskitu nation to be a nation among nations, after the Miskitu nation replaced the Church of England with the Moravian Church as their established religion. This book reveals the international United Nations referendum process of decolonization to free the Miskitu Coast and restore its right to exist.

The accuracy of recalled childhood memories in adulthood is the subject of extensive research and debate, and controversies exist surrounding the authenticity of recovered memories. This recollection of episodes from a childhood spent in 1950s England is enhanced by the authorÕs ADHD syndrome; it supplies a rare clarity to counteract the errors commonly found with authentic memories, when the adult has to infer missing details. The vignettes of an early life that comprise this book represent a world of freedom and adventure now sadly lost to history, but they paint a picture that is as vivid today as when they were first experienced.

Steinert Adrian Germany, Italy and the .Economic Consequences. of Maastricht

As a result of the Maastricht Treaty, North and South Europe share with each other the single market with the free movement of capital, labour, goods and services, and the single currency. The current situation, where the European South (Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain) is much more affected by the consequences of the economic and sovereign debt crisis than the European North (Austria, Finland, Germany, Netherlands) points at the issue of divergence within a common currency framework. 'Economic dualism' can be present as much within a country as between countries. It is demonstrated by historically evolved regional divides in Belgium, Germany, Italy, Spain or the United Kingdom. By taking Germany and Italy as case studies, this book is about European convergence and divergence from the point of view of comparative economic history. Based on a simple model of intra-regional divergence, in which labour mobility plays a key role, the development record of Eastern Germany after reunification and the Mezzogiorno since the 1950s will be compared. Their historical experiences could provide important insights into current trends within the eurozone.

An engaging look at what led to the financial turmoil we now find ourselves in Bailout Nation offers one of the clearest looks at the financial lenders, regulators, and politicians responsible for the financial crisis of 2008. Written by Barry Ritholtz, one of today's most popular economic bloggers and a well-established industry pundit, this book skillfully explores how the United States evolved from a rugged independent nation to a soft Bailout Nation-where financial firms are allowed to self-regulate in good times, but are bailed out by taxpayers in bad times. Entertaining and informative, this book clearly shows you how years of trying to control the economy with easy money has finally caught up with the federal government and how its practice of repeatedly rescuing Wall Street has come back to bite them. The definitive book on the financial crisis of 2008 Names the culprits responsible for this tragedy-from financial regulators to politicians Shows how each bailout throughout modern history has impacted what happened in the future Examines why the consumer/taxpayer is left suffering in an economy of bubbles, bailouts, and possible inflation Ritholtz operates a hugely popular blog, www.ritholtz.com/blog Scathing, but fair, Bailout Nation is a voice of reason in these uncertain economic times.

Bastian Bahnemann Rights issue related discounts in France, Germany, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom

Diploma Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Law, grade: 1.3, University of Applied Sciences Hannover (Rights issues), language: English, abstract: This work primarily focuses on share price reactions resulting from rights issues in France, Germany, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Using a sample of 417 rights issues between 2000 and 2008 this study confirms earlier evidence that UK rights issue announcements exhibit a significant abnormal negative impact with an average of -2.51%. With a loss of with an average of -1.52% French rights issues had a clear abnormal negative impact, which, however, was lower than that of the UK. In contrast to these findings the recent rights issues in Germany and Switzer-land showed with an average impact of -0.67% and -0.04% no strong negative effect. However, the slightly negative effect of rights issue announcements in Germany and Switzerland clearly differs from earlier studies that that have reported abnormal positive effects. Therefore, the present results confirm predictions of a further equalisation of announcement effects initiated by the harmonisation of equity markets (including the elimination of tax advantages in Switzerland) and legal settings. Furthermore, this study in essence confirms the hypotheses of a positive correlation of debt ratio and of a negative correlation of discount for all four countries. In contrast, neither a clear correlation between announcement effects and P/E ratios nor more pos...

Marek Čech Does the Merger-Related Legislation in the Nation of the M.A Target Company Affect the Probability of the Pre-Merger Deal Failure.

Diploma Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1.5, Utrecht University, course: International Management, language: English, abstract: The paper examines the relationship between the nation of an M&A transaction's target company and the probability of deal completion/ pre-merger failure based on a sample of transactions proposed by Dutch bidders during the period ranging from 2003 to 2015 with other Dutch companies; British (UK); or American (US) targets. By the logistic regression analysis, the US-targeted deals were found to be associated with higher probabilities of pre-merger failure which is aimed to be explained by applying a mediation analysis of several country-specific indicators potentially affecting the deal completion. This way, four factors which are addressed in the theoretical part of the paper (including the restrictiveness of the merger control mechanisms, effectiveness of corporate-related legislation and the time and complexity of contract enforcement) were found to be the mediators of the relationship between the target nation and pre-merger failure. Additionally, according to the regression results, transactions conducted during the end of a merger wave are expected to be less likely completed than the onesnegotiated in the earlier or later stages, regardless of the target nation.

Ekaterini Dimitrakudi Ethnic Marketing in Germany

Seminar paper from the year 2017 in the subject Communications - Public Relations, Advertising, Marketing, Social Media, grade: 1,0, California State University, Fullerton, language: English, abstract: The development of Germany into a multicultural society represents important challenges that arise in the most diverse areas of the joint life. The actuality of this topic is evident in the numerous discussions, which are guided from the perspective of the respective area. So areas such as e.g. politics, pedagogy or working life with the changes that ethnic diversity brings with it. This economic area is seeing the importance and potential of a multicultural society. From this understanding, a new branch of marketing developed which is specifically oriented on ethnic groups - called Ethnic Marketing. While the phenomenon of Ethnic Marketing has become an integral part of entrepreneurial trade and thinking in the USA, Great Britain and the Netherlands, the development lags behind in Germany. Only a few companies recognized the importance of ethnical groups as a the target group, while most companies are afraid of using it. For this reason, it is the task of the marketing to manifest the trend and to develop the concept of Ethnic Marketing and especially to provide the companies with clear examples on how to use it. The aim of this work is to provide an overview of the two largest ethnic minorities in Germany and to highlight the marketing potential of these target groups.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 2,3, University of Leipzig (Philologische Fakultät), language: English, abstract: AbstractThe purpose of this paper is to draw a comparison between the Cherokee Nation of the United States and the Aborigines of Australia concerning their economic development. Even though the Cherokee Nation and the Australian Aborigines share similar historical backgrounds with regard to a long lasting mistreatment by their prevailing governments, the Cherokee Nation, in contrast to the Australian Aborigines, has been and continues to experience a more successful economic development. This paper analyzes the reasons underlying this contrast. For that, the historical background of the Australian Aborigines and the Cherokee Nation is examined and compared. Since both of them were mistreated by their prevailing governments, their historical backgrounds are compared and the consequences of the mistreatment are applied to their contemporary economic situations. After that, the contemporary economic situations of the two peoples are compared, whereat the distinction between the Cherokee Nation's economic success and the Aborigine's economic failure becomes apparent. Finally, the reasons for the different economic development are investigated and in how far the affected peoples or even their governments, as in the case of the Australian Aborigines, are responsible for this difference. Odyssey of Exile. Jewish Women Flee the Nazis for Brazil

Odyssey of Exile paints a sensitive a compelling portrait of German-Jewish women who fled Nazi Germany in the 1930s and 1940s. Arriving in South America, they faced haunting memories of the terror they had escaped and the challenge of adjusting to Brazil's patriarchal culture, unstable economy, and tropical climate.Nine educated women from the German middle class are the focus of this volume. Katherine Morris places their memoirs in historical context, offering rare glimpses into personal histories. While the narratives differ in tone, subject, and approach, they share common themes: how Jewish women reacted to Nazi persecution, the pragmatic way they adapted to a new life in Brazil, and their desire to record their stories to keep the history of their families alive.

Since then both countries have developed in strikingly similar ways, and it is not surprising that these two became close allies during the Second World War, although in the end this proved a "fatal attraction."

Charting Reform, Achieving Equity in a Diverse Nation

This book examines what equity means in a nation where the schools are becoming more diverse. Theauthors consider how well our educational reform policies, often framed in the language of equity andopportunity, measure up to the challenges of achieving equity in a diverse nation. While there is growingawareness of the increasing racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic diversity of the nation, there is littlerecognition of how these trends affect the schools, particularly in formerly homogeneous communities. Atthe same time, inequalities in student achievement between different racial, ethnic, and socioeconomicgroups persist, even as educational policy has intensified the focus on the achievement gap. These twochallenges make definitions of equity and opportunity as urban problems obsolete and call for a criticalexamination of educational policy and reform from an equity perspective. Central themes include the criticalexamination of how equity is conceived under the law and in policy, the experiences of minority students insuburban schools, and the impact of current reform policies and strategies for achieving greater educationalopportunities for all students. This book is designed for graduate and undergraduate courses in educational policy and policy analysis, for policymakers interested in a criticalexamination of current reform policies and options, and educational leaders and administrators struggling with the implementation of reformmandates. From a policy perspective, it inclu...
