A world model: economies, trade, migration, security and development aid. This bookprovides the analytical capability to understand and explore the dynamics of globalisation. It is anchored in economic input-output models of over 200 countries and their relationships through trade, migration, security and development aid. The tools of complexity science are brought to bear and mathematical and computer models are developed both for the elements and for an integrated whole. Models are developed at a variety of scales ranging from the global and international trade through a European model of inter-sub-regional migration to piracy in the Gulf and the London riots of 2011. The models embrace the changing technology of international shipping, the impacts of migration on economic development along with changing patterns of military expenditure and development aid. A unique contribution is the level of spatial disaggregation which presents each of 200+ countries and their mutual interdependencies – along with some finer scale analyses of cities and regions. This is the first global model which offers this depth of detail with fully work-out models, these provide tools for policy making at national, European and global scales. Global dynamics: Presents in depth models of global dynamics. Provides a world economic model of 200+ countries and their interactions through trade, migration, security and development aid. Provides pointers to the deployment of analytical capability through modelling in policy development. Features a variety of models that constitute a formidable toolkit for analysis and policy development. Offers a demonstration of the practicalities of complexity science concepts. This book is for practitioners and policy analysts as well as those interested in mathematical model building and complexity science as well as advanced undergraduate and postgraduate level students.

Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 1,3, , language: English, abstract: This thesis addresses the relationship between economic development and tradeopenness as well as some structural factors (i.e., human capital, financial resources andinstitution) in the ASEAN countries. This thesis has three objectives. First, it attempts toqualitatively describe the ASEAN cooperation in order to promote interest in ASEAN.Second, it quantitatively estimates the effect of international trade on economic developmentof the ASEAN nations. Finally, it investigates how the effect of international trade oneconomic growth varies as a result of differences in human capital, financial resources andinstitution across the ASEAN nations. To accomplish these tasks, panel dataset on the ASEAN nations from 1980 to 2010are collected and pooled OLS, fixed-effect and instrumental variable models are applied tothe dataset. Taking into account a variety of specification issues as well as endogeneity oftrade openness, the research results show that trade openness plays an extremely importantrole on economic development of these countries. In addition, the benefit from tradeopenness is greater in countries that have more educated workers, deeper financial resourcesand better quality of institution. In conclusion, this thesis suggests that these structural factorsneed to be strengthened in order to benefit more from international trade.Key words: Inte...

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, Management Center Innsbruck, language: English, abstract: Due to increased globalisation over the last years and enhanced activities of multinational enterprises (MNEs), intra-firm trade has become more and more important. Intra-firm trade is estimated to constitute about one third of the global trade; and about 50% of all exports within the member states of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) are intra-firm exports. In order to determine the expenses and revenues for the associated companies, transfer prices (TP) have to be set for the respective goods of intra-group transfers (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development [OECD]). Intra-group transfers can be defined as the transaction of tangible or intangible property from one entity of a MNE to another entity, considered as sale and "may apply to departments, divisions, subsidiaries, or affiliate business units" . A TP therefore is the internal monetary value im-posed on goods, services or unmanufactured material that is transferred within a MNE group. According to the OECD (2010) intra-firm transfers are likewise de-fined as controlled transactions (i.e., transactions between two associated enterprises).

Beginning with the founding of the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1670, the fur trade dominated the development of the Canadian west. Although detailed accounts of the fur-trade era have appeared, until recently the rich social history has been ignored. In this book, the fur trade is examined not simply as an economic activity but as a social and cultural complex that was to survive for nearly two centuries. The author traces the development of a mutual dependency between Indian and European traders at the economic level that evolved into a significant cultural exchange as well. Marriages of fur traders to Indian women created bonds that helped advance trade relations. As a result of these "many tender ties," there emerged a unique society derived from both Indian and European culture.

The study examines two parallel hypotheses no. 1 "The relationship between international trade and economic growth" and no. 2 "The relationship between international trade and poverty reduction" in Pakistan. The objective of the first part of the study is to explore the impact of trade liberalization on economic growth with various covariates. The model contains real GDP per capita for economic growth, trade as share of GDP and the control variables such as financial development, government spending, annual inflation, remittances and manufacturing as shares of GDP are also used as determinants of economic growth for the period of 1973 - 2007. The second part of the study investigates the link between international trade and poverty reduction along with several independent variables. The model contains head count ratio for poverty, trade as share of GDP and the other determinants of poverty like real GDP per capita, consumer price index proxy for inflation, total investment, and agriculture as shares of GDP and urbanization as share of total population are also used.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Economics - Foreign Trade Theory, Trade Policy, grade: 1,0, Vienna University of Economics and Business (Institut für Außenwirtschaft und Entwicklung), language: English, abstract: The following paper relates two of the most important economic phenomena, namely economic growth and international trade. Before analysing the relationship between two economic phenomena in detail, an overview of some of the most prominent empirical empirical studies concerning the relationship between openness to international trade and economic growth in general is provided. As most of them seem to have reached the conclusion that trade influences growth in a positive way, the question for the reasons of this presumably positive relationship arises. Factors which cause or influence economic growth in general as well as various channels through which trade might have an influence on growth are presented in the third and forth section. The importance of various sources of economic and the Solow-Model and the AK-Model are introduced in order to distinguish between long-run and short-run effects of capital accumulation, learning by doing and R&D on economic growth. The remaining analysis concentrates on one channel in particular, namely on howtrade determines a country's import and export structure. The importance of therange of products a country produces is enormous and affects economic growth and welfare. The fifth section introduces the st...

Authors of this research analyse transition to multipolarity as a way to secure sustainable dynamic development and overcoming of the negative trends observed recently in the global community. Authors believe that multipolarity represents a combination of political and economic factors and in the world of globalisation it is the economy where new poles / concentration centres for political interests, economic relationship and fair trade are formed. Multipolarity requires elimination of confrontation between such poles / centres based on armaments race and extensive use of military strategies for political and economic purposes. Authors analyse: unipolarity in the world of globalisation; possibilities of return to bipolarity and multipolarity given the growing number of entities subject to international law and loss of territorial integrity by some states; regionalisation and its main tools and methods (strategic partnership and regional integration) for transition to multipolarity (by analysing how these methods function in specific regional agreements); role of the Russian economic policy in today's environment for gradual and ongoing development of national economy in the global multipolar economic system; monetary and financial aspects of incentives programmes related to transition to multipolarity and sustainable operation of the world's monetary system. This research is recommended for the use by government bodies and scientific and research institutes, and also for education of undergraduate and post-graduate students majoring in Economics and for additional training of government officials. Dear readers, we hope that the range of aspects we research in this book will let you share our point of view and apply the proposed solutions and concepts in your work.

The innovation capacity-building can contribute to improve the integration of developing countries in the world economy. The economic development has been a much discussed subject of the period after the Second World War until the 1990s. After the implementation of a global regulation system for trade and capital flows in the 1990s, the development economics has almost disappeared in favor of different theories on globalization, on finance and on international trade. The purpose of this book is to show that the innovation capacity building in developing countries is necessary to improve their weight in the world economy and to facilitate their economic ties with northern countries. However, there are important difficulties due to the lack of proactive economic policies. Our aim is to contribute to the revival of the development economics. The issue of improving the well-being of the world population as a whole is highly topical. However, studies neglect the need to give economic, financial, technological and political resources to developing countries to promote their own development. One of the most important means is to strengthen their innovation capabilities that allow them to better integrate into the world economy.

The issues explored include the sustainability of China's continuing economic reform and the necessary reforms to sustain that growth; the considerable effects of her integration into the global economy and its implications for the conduct of Chinese economic policies, including the exchange rate regime; and the influence of China on the regional and world economy. China's competitiveness in exports has also begun to challenge the market share of developing and developed economies; this role in promoting intra-regional trade is also explored.

Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 1,9, Cologne Business School Köln, language: English, abstract: The following paper refers to the potential of international free trade agreements to create interconnected economic markets, which require a common trade policy of the contracting countries. The difficulty in this approach is to ensure an economic integration of both countries on the basis of bilateral treaties, despite differing cultural, social and economic attitudes. As an effect of the continuing globalization and the increased international interconnectedness, there is generally a rising number of international free trade agreements among countries with the intention to achieve economic growth and welfare that on the other hand simultaneously led to an increased amount of criticism arising from non-governmental organizations, consumer protection organizations or environmental groups. This oppositeness has received a lot of attention during the recent negotiations and implementation of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between the European Union and Canada. Similar to the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), which is a foreseen free trade agreement between the European Union and the United States that has been temporarily suspended due to huge protests, both agreements have in common that they bear more criticism that than any other free trade agreement ever before. Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Economics - Other, grade: 1.7, University of Tubingen (Wirtschaftswissenschaftliche Fakultaet), course: International Economics (Hauptseminar), language: English, abstract: In order to achieve economic development, here understood as GDP growth, it is often suggested that developing countries would only need to ensure free trade and good institutions. Nevertheless countries pursuing institutional quality and trade openness, namely in Latin America, have failed to achieve sustainable economic development. Meanwhile others, namely in South and East Asia, have achieved remarkable economic growth rates, without functioning markets and property rights in place. The questions I try to answer are: How can a theoretical framework be designed to explain the mentioned inefficiencies of the laisez-faire equilibrium in comparison to a socially optimal situation? Can it be argued that the above mentioned diverging growth success of different developing countries has been due to varying quality of chosen policy options? Do, by their enhancement, Rodrik and Hausmann explain the seemingly anomalies within the established theory on development economics?

Diploma Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Economics - Foreign Trade Theory, Trade Policy, grade: 1,0, University of Osnabrück (Fachbereich für Außenwirtschaft), language: English, abstract: After the successful experience of newly industrializing countries in East Asia (e.g., the East Asian Tigers: Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan) in the 1960s and Southeast Asia (e.g., the Southeast Asian Little-Tigers: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand) by the late 1970s, trade liberalization (TL) in less developed countries (LDCs) has been considered as a policy to achieve rapid economic development. The argu-ment, put forward for instance by Dollar et al. Spurred on by the dramatic failure of import substitution industrialization (ISI) strategies, and with the advice and support from international financial institutions (IFIs), such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Trade Organization (WTO), Krueger [1998, p.1521], for instance, finds that the intervening period has seen a large wave of TL episodes in countries in Latin America, Middle- and North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, and South Asia respectively. This study examines the role of the various processes entailed in globalisation in the rise of the New Right in Italy and Germany. The first section aims to clarify what is meant by the term globalisation, for it is more easily used than defined. Thus, several perspectives, such as those of the tranformationalists and the hyperglobalists, are taken into account. Then, economic and cultural globalisation, considered to be the most influential forms of globalisation, are analysed in depth. The second part specifically examines the Italian and the German cases by analysing the political and ideological discourse of successful New Right cultural movements and parties, such as the Italian Northern League and National Alliance. This analysis explains the difference between the populist New Right and the extreme right, and how the rise of New Right parties can be linked with the strengthening of cultural and economic globalisation.

This book is an economic and philosophical discourse on sustainable economic development inspired by Ujamaa and the philosophy of self-reliance advocated by Julius Nyerere as a policy towards social and economic development. The book explores human empowerment as a means to sustainable economic development. It argues that human empowerment in developing countries can build on Nyerere's approach to development founded on community participation. However, self-reliance is not possible without the ability to build sustainable development and-, self-reliance philosophy and efforts towards development in their current forms have lacked the ability to intensify people's capability. Human empowerment is needed to produce people with vision, who can reflect on situations, initiate relevant and responsible action, and thereby transform situations for the common good. The empowerment I recommend is endowed on education, entrepreneurship and civil societies. Building on Amartya Sen's philosophy of the capability approach to development, empowerment will provide relevant solution for developing countries to break away from economic dependency and the vicious cycle of poverty.

Development economics entail all the aspects of the development process especially meant for the developing countries to overcome the challenges that impede development. This can be through education, education and man power development, restructuring market incentives, incorporating favorable social and political approaches and practices among other factors.Human beings however need streamlined social and economic systems that are able to achieve development through major changes in social structures, national institutions, cultures and attitudes as well as eradication of poverty, reduction of income inequality and acceleration of economic growth. The developing world needs a multi-disciplinary approach and ideas so as to come out of the economic backward situation. Micheal, P describes that because of heterogeneity of the developing world, and the complexity of the development process, development economics must be eclectic, attempting to combine relevant concepts and theories from traditional economics analysis along with new models and broader multi-disciplinary approaches from historical and co temporally development experience of Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Debraj Ray puts it that development economics studies economics of the developing world and has made excellent use of economic theory, econometrics, anthropology, sociology, political science, biology and demography. It needs a lot more dimensional approach to understand it.

Thus, the performance of the Nigerian Capital Market indicators as they affect the GDP growth rate and human development index in Nigeria was examined. Multiple linear regression model was adopted as the method of analysis. The evaluation technique includes t-statistics, R squared, adjusted R squared, Durbin Watson test, standard error test and the f-statistics. The specific findings of this study show that there is no significant relationship between the capital market indicators and economic development in Nigeria during the period 1987 to 2006. There is a positive but insignificant relationship among the Nigerian Stock Exchange market capitalization, turnover ratio and economic development, while the relationship between the Nigerian Stock Exchange number of listed securities and economic development is negative and insignificant. Therefore, the Nigerian capital Market has fallen short of expectation vis-à-vis its role in fostering investment for economic growth and development.

In the wake of the crisis of the import-substitution economic model a wide array of approaches and theories revolved around one basic question: When there occurs a crisis in the economy - whatever definition of crisis may be applied in a particular case - which are the best ways of overcoming anti-reform resistances, regain economic growth and promote sustainable and ―future-approved‖ development? In the most general sense a crisis of the political or economic system can be referred to as two-dimensional: on the one hand it means the shattering and dis-equilibrating of a formerly successful status quo, on the other hand it opens up the necessity to find a new status quo (or status quo post) that can be deemed compatible to the new economic, domestic as well as international, circumstances. In fact, the longer a prosperous status quo lasts, the more difficult a subsequent change will get. Path-dependencies develop, stable institutions arise, group interests and organizations take root and expectations about growth, inflation, external trade and other variables cement into place.

Master's Thesis from the year 2006 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 1,7, University of Hamburg, 109 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Education is in itself a fundamental human right. As an important determinant of economic growth and human development, education also constitutes an indispensable means of realizing other human rights, particularly rights associated with employment and social security. With the unleashed force of globalization sweeping all aspects of social and economic life, national governments throughout the world increasingly understand the strategic importance of education in enhancing and maintaining international competitiveness, and its crucial role in developing economic and social viability on the long run. On the other hand, the convergent impacts of globalization also bring new impetus for cross-boarder education, and affect the shape and mode of the operation of national education systems more influentially than ever. Over the last two decades trade in cross-border education has been increasing steadily in all forms: not only the numbers of students enrolled in educational institutions outside their home country has been rapidly increasing, but also more and more education providers operate abroad, providing their educational services to foreign students who remain at home. Accelerated development of the new information and communication technologies also facilitate cross-border education and ...

Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject Economics - Foreign Trade Theory, Trade Policy, grade: A-, University of Auckland (Business School - Faculty of Economics), course: Trade & Development, 20 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: There has been a lot of work on the relation between openness and economic growth, with results being ambiguous. A study done by Sachs and Warner (1995), using a sample of 135 countries, has shown that there is a positive correlation between openness and growth, e.g. that trade liberalisation fosters economic performance. The assumptions and country categorisations of this study have been criticised by Rodriguez and Rodrik (2000); they concluded that low tariff rates do not necessarily imply higher growth rates but that tariff protection exceeding a certain level stifles growth. Dollar and Kray (cited in Santos-Paulino and Thirlwall, 2004) compared different sets of countries with each other and found out that changes in growth rates are positively correlated with the share of trade and thus greater openness has accelerated economic growth. This essay compares the foreign trade policy of Mexico and Costa Rica. Even though both countries pursued the same policies, some differences can be found. Both implemented a strategy of import-substituting industrialisation until the serious crisis at the beginning of the 1980s, followed by a period of extensive trade liberalisation. This was due to pressure put on by the inter...

Inhaltsangabe:Introduction: This thesis tries to examine the structures, activities, changes and spatial impacts of economic development in Scotland. Looking at the Scottish economy it has to be considered that Scotland is both an integrated part of the UK and the UK economy and a peripheral region within the UK. Therefore Scotland does not have an economy of its own, but the distinctiveness of the region in terms of location, history and recent political devel-opments justifies a closer examination of the matter. Scotland is in many aspects a very heterogeneous region. This is in particular true for the economic structure and a focus on one region cannot be representative. Edinburgh is an exceptionally prosperous region, not only in Scottish terms. However this prosperity and activity in economic development makes Edinburgh an interesting subject for examination. Thus the focus of this thesis lies on the developments in Edinburgh. Economic development is certainly influenced by a vast number of factors and it is impossible to take all of them into account. Within this thesis the emphasis lies on governmental influence on the developments. However European development measures are not considered. Accordingly the thesis aims to look at the ways the promotion of economic development is carried out in Scotland and tries to assess the measures on the background of the distinctiveness of Scotland and Edinburgh. Thus in the first chapter the thesis takes a look at Scotland as a who...

Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, grade: 88 %, Edinburgh Napier University, language: English, abstract: One of the great economic debates of all times is whether trade liberalisation or rather protectionism promotes economic growth (Case, Fair and Oster, 2009, p. 710). Ricardo (1955) claims with his theory of comparative advantage that specialisation and free trade benefits all participants. The producers and consumers ostensibly gain access to a wider range of products at lower prices and higher quality, the resources are used more efficiently, and the manufacturers may expand their products and facilities in foreign markets. However, in all times some politicians and market participants have been arguing against free trade and in favour of protection. Trade liberalisation would destroy jobs in non-competitve sectors, infant industries may have no chance to develop and the domestic economy depends to strong on foreign markets. The aim of this report is to discuss the link beween trade liberalisation and economic growth based on data and statistical outcomes.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 2,3, University of Leipzig (Philologische Fakultät), language: English, abstract: AbstractThe purpose of this paper is to draw a comparison between the Cherokee Nation of the United States and the Aborigines of Australia concerning their economic development. Even though the Cherokee Nation and the Australian Aborigines share similar historical backgrounds with regard to a long lasting mistreatment by their prevailing governments, the Cherokee Nation, in contrast to the Australian Aborigines, has been and continues to experience a more successful economic development. This paper analyzes the reasons underlying this contrast. For that, the historical background of the Australian Aborigines and the Cherokee Nation is examined and compared. Since both of them were mistreated by their prevailing governments, their historical backgrounds are compared and the consequences of the mistreatment are applied to their contemporary economic situations. After that, the contemporary economic situations of the two peoples are compared, whereat the distinction between the Cherokee Nation's economic success and the Aborigine's economic failure becomes apparent. Finally, the reasons for the different economic development are investigated and in how far the affected peoples or even their governments, as in the case of the Australian Aborigines, are responsible for this difference. 'Ricardo's Gauntlet' advances a critique of the mainstream economic case for international free trade. While the core of the case for free trade is David Ricardo's principle of comparative advantage, the book argues that this case relies on a cluster of interconnected and mutually enforcing 'economic fictions' - economic theories or doctrines that pretend to be fact but which upon examination turn out to be mirages. Exposing the layers of fictions nested in the subfields of mainstream economies empties comparative advantage of its persuasiveness, bringing down the case for free trade. This book is not, however, confined to dealing with esoteric puzzles within economic theory. Rather, it takes a social theoretical perspective and grapples with comparative advantage and its associated economic fictions as ideas that ground an argument with social currency, social validity and social effects. While 'Ricardo's Gauntlet' engages in economic debates, it does so with the purpose of demonstrating the fragility of mainstream economic ideology and the flaw at the heart of its justification of free trade.Proposing a novel disaggregation of the case for free trade into its component fictions - and drawing on and uniting heterodox and radical strands including social theory and political philosophy - 'Ricardo's Gauntlet' reveals that the case for free trade fails precisely on its own terms. This failure unnecessarily and dangerously limits ou...

Seminar paper from the year 2002 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 1.3 (A), University of Manchester (Manchester School of Management), 37 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This paper adresses how the defence of local culture is becoming an increasing concern in the current era of globalisation, as diminishing transport costs and new forms of communication are enabling worldwide dissemination of products and ideas. The import of cultural goods from nations with disparate values and traditions is investigated, which could potentially cause the destabilisation of national or local communities. Indeed, these cultural goods may displace existing products and result in cultural homogenisation. Also, this paper looks at measures designed to protect culture which are exempt from WTO consideration and disputes between nations are negotiated bilaterally. As a result, fears that larger economies, such as the US, are able to dominate the cultural industries of smaller nations are investigated. Finally, this paper makes two main recommendations concerning domestic policy and concerning international trade policy. Through the development of a methodology which can develop agreements on more easily recognisable cultural interests - those less clouded by economic motivations - such a body would be able to tackle the more complex and problematic issues, with the aim of separating economic and political issues from genuine cultural concerns.

This research discusses the relationship between the migration of skilled professional and managerial workers from Canada to the United States, the so-called "brain drain", and seeks to determine if and how the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) may have affected bilateral flows of permanent and non-permanent immigrants between the two countries.Classical economic theory suggests that trade and factor movements are substitutes, so that freer trade between Canada and the United States could be expected to reduce incentives for bilateral migration. On the other hand, the labor demands of multinational corporations in the emerging global marketplace require a greater degree of worker mobility than has heretofore existed. The research reviews available historic and longitudinal evidence related to political, social and economic effects of the FTA and the NAFTA.

On February 10, 1971 a historical stage was set between China and Nigeria, one of not only bilateral relations but of mutual respect for each other. Bachelor Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Trade and Distribution, grade: B+, Stanford University, language: English, abstract: A trade bloc is a preferential trade agreement between a range of nations, aimed at significantly reducing or removing trade barriers within the member states. Regional trade blocs are formed by neighbouring countries or countries that are in close proximity to each other. The two key features of a trade bloc is that (1) it involves a cutback or abolition of obstacles to trade, and (2) the trade liberalisation that is attained through the trade bloc is discriminatory in purview of the fact that it is applicable only to the member states of the trade bloc and non-member countries are shown prejudice in their dealings with members of the trade bloc. The first aspect of trade blocs above is in line with the mission of the World trade Organisation (WTO) and its antecedent, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). The principle of Non-discrimination under the GATT stipulates that no member state shall show prejudice between GATT members during the operations of world trade. In the same magnitude, the WTO offers an environment for negotiating agreements that are focused on reducing barriers to international trade and making sure that trade is carried out on a basis of openness, thus contributing to economic growth as well as development. Notably, although trade blocs have different structures, they are premised on the ...

This is strictly an examination of the effect of non-oil export on economic growth of Nigeria. The basic aim is to examine the trend and composition of the non-oil export in Nigeria and investigate the extent of the contribution of non-oil export sector to the Nigerian economy. The study generate serious academic interest in evolving new methods and strategies needed in developing non-oil exports for higher productivity and efficient performance which in the long run will result to economic growth and development. Hence it evaluates the federal government incentives and schemes in promoting non-oil export trade promotion in Nigeria with focus on the immense derivable benefits from engaging in non-oil export and the resulting economic growth in Nigeria at aggregate level which are associated with the current international trends in global trade liberation. Virtually all the nations' foreign exchange was obtained from the exportation of oil products due to the economic boom in 1970s. Thus, it is pertinent in this study to discuss the causes and consequences of the neglect of the non-oil export in detail as well as trend examined since 1970 in order to note its growth.

In addition, occurrence of trade deficit may not b a profit loss. Moreover, United States consumers and investors are benefiting from the trade between United States and china. According to the results, the china-united states debate on Chinese exchange rate debates are merely differences in perception in sequencing Chinese adoption of policies of making the exchange rate system flexible and reducing capital control.

But that is not completely true. Trade is not as free as many of us always think it is. There are still so many trade barriers which make international trade sometimes such an adventure. The World Trade Organization (WTO) was established to liberalize trade by reducing or eliminating tariffs and any other trade barriers. Therefore, all members have to contribute to that undertaking and make concessions. In the current round, named the Doha Development Agenda this does not work as it was meant to. A crucial issue in that conflict is agriculture. Developing countries and least developed countries complain about large amounts of subsidies paid by high-income countries such as the EU. In contrast, developed countries want developing countries to make concessions in terms of trade related intellectual property rights and trade related investment measures. So each country blames the other one instead of taking action and making the first step. This essay is structured into two main parts. The first part informs about some basics of protectionism and what happened so far in terms of agricultural liberalization. Chapter two gives a short overview of the existing types of protectionist measures to get a f...

This paper is guided by a vision to create Icelandic-Indonesian cooperation within the geothermal sector. It sets out in an explorative manner to analyse the institutional barriers to geothermal development in Indonesia. Building on that analysis and the overlapping literature of technology transfer, sustainable development, innovation diffusion, and energy based economic development; the paper discusses how the Icelandic geothermal sector can support and simultaneously benefit from the geothermal development in Indonesia. The paper than identifies and develops a specific case of Icelandic technology transfer to Indonesia and suggest further cooperation in the implementation and commercialization of the relevant small scale geothermal technology. This section discusses the nature of such a transfer and the possible economic, social, and environmental benefits of the technology for Indonesia.

This dissertation's hypothesis argues that state-building and development are processes that, to function successfully, must be positioned in a complementary interrelationship. This argument has arisen in response to contemporary approaches to state-building and development that are too narrow, so that state-building strategies are often reduced to the establishment of political institutions to the exclusion of other equally necessary structures that include economic, social, and even cultural concerns; in the same sense, development strategies frequently focus on the support and establishment of selected economic structures at the exclusion of political, cultural, and social dimensions. Furthermore, a necessary prerequisite for long-term stability is a guarantee of individual and collective security, and the state requires, in its establishment and development, this aspect in all of its institutions. By taking as a case study the intervention of UNMIK and the EU in Kosovo, the author attempts to show how state-building and development processes are interrelated, and how they might best be applied in the field in order to achieve sustainable outcomes.State-building is defined as the building of state structures, which are role- and rule-oriented institutions within political, economic, social and cultural domains. Development is used in this work to identify the process responsible for making these structures sustainable over time. In the case of Kosovo, in addition to th...
