There are numerous ethnic groups in southern Ethiopia of which most also speak their own language and have distinct cultural trades. But how would the future of the different ethnic groups and their cultural heritage look like in the face of globalization processes? Is this cultural and linguistic diversity now diminishing through globalization processes and becoming replaced by a homogenous "global culture"?This study examines whether the cultures of southern Ethiopia are being penetrated by American popular culture, local cultural products are threatened with extinction and whether traditional lifestyles are becoming abandoned because the people of south Ethiopia are increasingly becoming part of a "global consumer culture". What about "modernization" efforts by development projects and the global spread of formal education through schooling, do they contribute to the elimination of indigenous knowledge systems? And does the spread of the English language already constitute a threat to linguistic diversity? Moreover, the impacts of the arrivals of international tourists and of Christian missionary organizations on the cultures of the different ethnic groups are being examined.

The ongoing discussions about globalization, American hegemony and September 11 and its aftermath have moved the debate about the export of American culture and cultural anti-Americanism to center stage of world politics. At such a time, it is crucial to understand the process of culture transfer and its effects on local societies and their attitudes toward the United States. This volume presents Germany as a case study of the impact of American culture throughout a period characterized by a totalitarian system, two unusually destructive wars, massive ethnic cleansing, and economic disaster. Drawing on examples from history, culture studies, film, radio, and the arts, the authors explore the political and cultural parameters of Americanization and anti-Americanism, as reflected in the reception and rejection of American popular culture and, more generally, in European-American relations in the "American Century." Alexander Stephan is Professor of German, Ohio Eminent Scholar, and Senior Fellow of the Mershon Center for the Study of International Security and Public Policy at Ohio State University, where he directs a project on American culture and anti-Americanism in Europe and the world.

Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,7, European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder), course: Marketing - International Management, language: English, abstract: Significant transformations have shaped the world in recent years and the concept of globalization has become one of the most controversial issues. Numerous studies have put their focus on the consequences of globalization on our lives. However, no agreement yet exists among scholars (Guillén, 2001). Speaking of globalization means understanding all its diverse dimensions and actors as well as discussing their transformative power. In his recent book "From Walmart to Al Qaeda" Murillo (2015) offers a multidisciplinary approach considering all the structural elements such as cultural, technological, economic, financial, political and institutional ones that shape and at the same time are shaped by globalization. By discussing the concept of globalization and its impact on each dimension, various approaches are used for diagnosing the direction of change and perils as well as benefits. In addition to that, Murillo (2015:xiii) suggests that "the very complexity and scope of globalization means any discussion requires examination of the various schools of thought, theories and approaches [...]" in order to gain a better understanding of the world. Even though institutional theory is closely linked to the process of globalization and has been wi...

The economic and social outcomes of mid-twentieth-century Fordist capitalism were characterized by a decrease in the significance of distance and a shift in the dynamic of time. This "time-space compression" is one of the defining components of contemporary globalization. In their latest collaboration, Alessandro Bonanno and Douglas Constance provide an in-depth analysis of the origins and nature of globalization using the context of the agro-food sector, one of the most globalized socioeconomic sectors in the world.Breaking from widely used methodologies in the study of globalization, Bonanno and Constance argue that the shifting dynamic of space and time has created a new capitalism that is qualitatively different from capitalism inspired by patterns of international relations established throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The book provides an extensive and original review of existing literature and is centered on eight specific case studies. Through the analysis of these "stories of globalization," the authors examine how the origins of and interactions between transnational corporations, groups that resist these organizations, and the state have given birth to a contemporary understanding of globalization. They use this new understanding to analyze globalization as a contested terrain in which the power of transnational corporations is affected by mounting opposition and internal contradictions.

In lively and unflinching prose, Eric Cazdyn and Imre Szeman argue that contemporary thought about the world is disabled by a fatal flaw: the inability to think «an after» to globalization. After establishing seven theses (on education, morality, history, future, capitalism, nation, and common sense) that challenge the false promises that sustain this time-limit, After Globalization examines four popular thinkers (Thomas Friedman, Richard Florida, Paul Krugman and Naomi Klein) and how their work is dulled by these promises. Cazdyn and Szeman then speak to students from around the globe who are both unconvinced and uninterested in these promises and who understand the world very differently than the way it is popularly represented. After Globalization argues that a true capacity to think an after to globalization is the very beginning of politics today.

Bauman Zygmunt Culture in a Liquid Modern World

In its original formulation, ‘culture' was intended to be an agent for change, a mission undertaken with the aim of educating ‘the people' by bringing the best of human thought and creativity to them. But in our contemporary liquid-modern world, culture has lost its missionary role and has become a means of seduction: it seeks no longer to enlighten the people but to seduce them. The function of culture today is not to satisfy existing needs but to create new ones, while simultaneously ensuring that existing needs remain permanently unfulfilled. Culture today likens itself to a giant department store where the shelves are overflowing with desirable goods that are changed on a daily basis – just long enough to stimulate desires whose gratification is perpetually postponed. In this new book, Zygmunt Bauman – one of the most brilliant and influential social thinkers of our time – retraces the peregrinations of the concept of culture and examines its fate in a world marked by the powerful new forces of globalization, migration and the intermingling of populations. He argues that Europe has a particularly important role to play in revitalizing our understanding of culture, precisely because Europe, with its great diversity of peoples, languages and histories, is the space where the Other is always one's neighbour and where each is constantly called upon to learn from everyone else.

This book analyzes the impact of culture on employee justice judgments and reactions toperceptions of fairness and unfairness. I start this book with the following two questions. Why is a book on culture and organizational justice needed? What does such a book add tothe extant literature on organizational justice, especially, after the publication of the landmarkwork of Colquitt and Greenberg (2005), Handbook of Organizational Justice?Although there are no easy answers to these questions, in the following lines, I explain thereasons why a book on culture and justice is not only needed but also timely. There are at least three reasons for which a book on culture and organizational justice is needed. First, a book on culture andorganizational justice is needed because "there are indications that culture exerts very important and wide-ranging effects onjustice behavior including even generally shaping the likelihood that individuals will experience feelings of injustice" (James,1993, p. 22). Second, globalization has led to the interrelatedness of world economies. Thus, most organizations not only operatein several countries, but they also employ people from different nationalities and cultural backgrounds. The resulting challengeis to find new ways of managing a culturally diverse workforce. Third, justice is inherent to any organized social group. As examples of social systems, organizations are arenas of justice concerns because their members compete for limitedresources...

Globalization has affected everyone's lives, and the reactions to it have been mixed. Legal scholars and political scientists tend to emphasize its harmful aspects, while economists tend to emphasize its benefits. Those concerned about human rights have more often been among the critics than among the supporters of globalization. In Can Globalization Promote Human Rights? Rhoda Howard-Hassmann presents a balanced account of the negative and positive features of globalization in relation to human rights, in both their economic and civil/political dimensions. On the positive side, she draws on substantial empirical work to show that globalization has significantly reduced world poverty levels, even while, on the negative side, it has exacerbated economic inequality across and within countries. Ultimately, she argues, social action and political decision making will determine whether the positive effects of globalization outweigh the negatives. And, in contrast to those who prefer either schemes for redistributing wealth on moral grounds or authoritarian socialist approaches, she makes the case for social democracy as the best political system for the protection of all human rights, civil and political as well as economic.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,0, University of Linz (International Management), course: Current Issues in International Management, language: English, abstract: This thesis will provide a clear understanding of how and why company culture is such an important factor in M&A. First of all, mergers, acquisitions and company culture will be defined. Then, different types of company cultures are analysed regarding their mutual compatibility. This is followed by an explanation of how cultural integration can take place and how managers can facilitate it. Finally, important findings are summarized and discussed. As globalization progresses, so does the internationalization of companies. In the course of this development, over the last 30 years, the forming of mergers and acquisitions has become very popular. One of the greatest challenges in a merger or an acquisition is aligning the company culture of the merging partners before, during and after the merger. Company culture - or the lack of an integrated company culture - can crucially influence the success or failure of a merger or acquisition. However, in spite of the fact that there are a lot of ways to facilitate cultural integration, it is something that is often neglected in the planning phase, which makes it all the more difficult to accomplish successfully further along in the process.

The present volume is the fifth in the series of yearbooks with the title Globalistics and Globalization Studies. The subtitle of the present volume is Global Transformations and Global Future. We become more and more accustomed to think globally and to see global processes. And our future can all means be global. However, is this statement justified? Indeed, in recent years, many have begun to claim that globalization has stalled, that we are rather dealing with the process of anti-globalization. Will not we find ourselves at some point again in an edifice spanning across the globe, but divided into national apartments, separated by walls of high tariffs and mutual suspicion? Of course, some setbacks are always possible, because the process of globalization cannot develop smoothly. It is a process which is itself emerging from contradictions and is shaped by a new contradiction. They often go much further than underlying systemic changes allow. They break forward, as the vanguard of a victorious army, and then often meet resistance of various social and political forces and may suddenly start to roll back just at the moment when everyone expects their further offensive. We believe that this is what is happening with globalization at present. The yearbook will be interesting to a wide range of researchers, teachers, students and all those who are concerned about global issues.

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Sociology - Economy and Industry, grade: 7,0, Maastricht University, language: English, abstract: Globalization is a term so frequently used that one tends to assume that everyone knows what globalization stands for. In one way this is true, since everybody pictures something different when using the word „globalization". The aim of this paper is to clarify the term „globalization" by discussing different authors. Yet, the paper does not aim at giving „THE definition" of globalization, rather it is attempting to show the different ways globalization can and is to be seen. Since there has been a massive amount of theoretical discussion of the term globalization, one needs to narrow down the field. Thus, this paper is mainly going to focus on thecultural dimension of globalization with a small outlook to other fields. Through the direct comparison of different authors certain shortcomings or advantages of their views might be easier noticed, as it would be the case when studying the authorsseparate from each other. At the same time, certain similarities or build - ups of theories can be detected as well.Following authors have been discussed: Anthony Giddens, Roland Robertson, Doreen Massey, Arjun Appadurai, Jan Nederveen Pieterse and Manuell Castells.

Contrary to the common view that globalization undermines social agency, ‘alter-globalization activists', that is, those who contest globalization in its neo-liberal form, have developed new ways to become actors in the global age. They propose alternatives to Washington Consensus policies, implement horizontal and participatory organization models and promote a nascent global public space. Rather than being anti-globalization, these activists have built a truly global movement that has gathered citizens, committed intellectuals, indigenous, farmers, dalits and NGOs against neoliberal policies in street demonstrations and Social Forums all over the world, from Bangalore to Seattle and from Porto Alegre to Nairobi. This book analyses this worldwide movement on the bases of extensive field research conducted since 1999. Alter-Globalization provides a comprehensive account of these critical global forces and their attempts to answer one of the major challenges of our time: How can citizens and civil society contribute to the building of a fairer, sustainable and more democratic co-existence of human beings in a global world?

The way people think and act politically is not set in stone. People can and do change the fundamental cultural contours of their political situation. Their political culture does not only restrict imagination and action – it is also a resource for political creativity and invention. In Reinventing Political Culture, this resource is uncovered and explored. Analyzed as a tension between the power of culture and the culture of power, the concept of political culture is reinvented and applied to understanding the practice of people transforming their own political culture in very different circumstances. Three instances of such reinvention are closely examined: one historic, during the twilight of the Soviet empire; one actively in process and actively opposed, ‘the Obama revolution'; and one an apparent distant dream, the power of culture and the culture of power that would avoid ‘the clash of civilizations' in the Middle East. In accessible and engaging prose, Goldfarb clearly and forcefully presents students and scholars of sociology, comparative politics, and cultural studies with an original position on political culture, showing how the political cultures of our times pose not only grave dangers, but also opportunities for creative alternatives.

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2014 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Globalization, Political Economics, grade: 1,7, University of Paderborn, language: English, abstract: Eating is a basic need for human life and the variety of offered food worldwide is huge. In China, the fast developing nation with an increasing number of habitants and a booming economy, the offer of foreign cuisines grows steadily. The variety includes Western dishes, too, which are slowly establishing in China. Existing differences between Chinese and Western restaurants and dishes are obvious. Thus, this paper investigates which factors influence the consumption patterns of the Chinese regarding Western food, taking the current offer in Shanghai as an example. Exploring this question a qualitative analysis with Chinese partici-pants was conducted. For the analysis, 15 categories were developed based on 7 interviews, which provided detailed information about the participant's attitude, opinion and consumption behavior regarding Western food. The Chinese consciously chose Western restaurants because of the environment there, the different taste of the food or to learn more about a foreign culture. Due to the Opening-up policy and an ongoing globalization process, the younger generation becomes more open-minded and interested in experiencing something new and demands an increased offer with high quality. Implications and limitations are discussed. This research pape...

Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,0, University of applied sciences, Nürnberg (IOM), course: HR Management, language: English, abstract: Corporate culture is an important phenomenon of organizations. Values, visions, norms, language, beliefs and habits of the organization are fixed in the cultures contents. A good working culture is important for the company's success and profit situation. The globalization leads to a dramatic process in the economic markets. Takeovers, cooperation and mergers are typical consequences of the new economic era. This market process is also responsible for the collision of corporate cultures. Different needs justify that willful intervention in the culture system after a takeover. Dissatisfaction, isolation and inefficiency are only a few reasons why a cultural change is recommendable. For a successful change it is decisive to know everything about the old culture and to know what to do for changing it. Several theoretical models and strategies have been developed for this issue. The most reason why a change fails is that problems and limitations have not been taken into consideration or have not been handled the right way. Culture guides should lead the employees thru the changing process and should help orientating. The change of a culture is a long way and many do are not patient enough to wait. How are changing gender relations shaping and being shaped by post-socialist marketization and liberalization? Do new forms of economic and cultural globalization open spaces for women's empowerment and feminist politics? The rapid social transformationsexperienced by the people of the Czech Republic in the wake of the collapse of communism in 1989 afford political scientist Jacqui True with an opportunity to answer these questions by examining political and gendered identities in flux. She argues that the privatization of a formerly state economy and the adoption of consumer-oriented market practices were shaped by ideas and attitudes about gender roles. Though finely tuned to the particular, local traditions that have defined the boundaries of globalization for Czech men and women, also offers a provocative general thesis about the inextricable linkages between political and economic changes and gender identities.

Increasing globalization has brought academics and practitioners to study national cultures in management. Likewise, the trend towards running business through projects has brought broader perspectives such as national cultures into project management. Recent academic literature demonstrated that national culture has a major impact on management practices. However, the element of national culture is elusively described in the project management field. No extensive tests were found on the comparison of the project planning among countries, which could help to establish relationship between national cultures and project planning capabilities. Therefore, using GLOBE study to capture national cultures and Project Management Planning Quality(PMPQ) model to capture project planning approach and organizational planning support, this book compares national culture, project planning and organizational project planning support across four different countries: Malaysia,Japan,Sweden and Israel. It answers questions about the relevance of national culture to project planning and concludes with implications to project managers.

At the same time, more radical forms of Islam, in the shape of fundamentalism, seem to gain more and more influence in the West as well as in the Arabic world. In Great Britain, migration movements after World War II proved that Muslims are still not integrated in British society. Most Muslims still ask themselves the question 'Are we Muslims in Britain or are we British Muslims?'This dilemma increased after 9/11 and 2005 and opened the doors for the radical ideas simply because Islam serves well to provide identity in a diaspora situation. This essay tries to show how globalization, migration and Islam are interwoven and in how far British society is threatened by fundamentalism which still hinders a dialogue on both sides.

Religion and theology became an occult science for many; and belief in the values of life that religions proclaim turned to be useless and void. The handing on of the faith' has become a deep crisis and a problematic today and has turned to be a burning issue for the contemporary Church. What is necessary in the contemporary culture is to develop a counter-culture that passionately understands the love of God and sharing it passionately and joyfully with the fellow humans and the world around us. We need a counter-culture of sharing the truth and love which is God. Pope Francis' message is none other than this. He exhorts for a missionary renewal in the Church and to have a new theological outlook that leads the Church to be a Church of the poor - a counter culture of compassionate and tender love. When it comes to India, the Church, a minority in number, faces a lot of challenges in its practice and proclamation of faith. Globalization and the new economic reforms badly affected the Indian culture which is turning to be secular, as well as fundamentalist. With a weak presence in many areas the Church in India is struggling to make its presence felt in the nation. The first is commonly defined as the dismantling of barriers to trade and cultural exchange and responds significantly to lobbying of the world s largest corporations, including media corporations. The second concerns U.S. pursuit of national security interests as response to "terrorism," at one level and, at others, to intensifying competition among both nations and corporations for global natural resources."

Globalization and the Environment critically explores the actors, politics and processes that govern the relationship between globalization and the environment. Taking key aspects of globalisation in turn – trade, production and finance – the book highlights the relations of power at work that determine whether globalization is managed in a sustainable way and on whose behalf. Each chapter looks in turn at the political ecology of these central pillars of the global economy, reviewing evidence of its impact on diverse ecologies and societies, its governance – the political structures, institutions and policy making processes in place to manage this relationship – and finally efforts to contest and challenge these prevailing approaches. The book makes sense of the relationship between globalisation and the environment using a range of theoretical tools from different disciplines. This helps to place the debate about the compatibility between globalisation and sustainability in an explicitly political and historical context in which it is possible to appreciate the ‘nature’ of interests and power relations that privilege some ways of responding to environmental problems over others in a context of globalisation.
