Biomarkers accepted for clinical use in breast cancer, such as CA 15-3 and CEA have low sensitivity and specificity, and are thus more useful for patients at an advanced stage of breast cancer rather than for early cancer diagnosis. So, there is a need for new biomarkers to help in diagnosis of primary breast cancer and this is one of the aims of the present study. Once a patient has been diagnosed with breast cancer, there are several factors shown to be associated with survival. These factors are referred to as prognostic factors such as axillary lymph node status, tumor size, histological grade and hormone receptor expression. All these factors require tissue samples which is not practical for a screening regimen. So, measurement of the parameters in the present study was on the serum. Angiogenesis is a key factor in cancer development. It is initiated when there is a predominance of angiogenic factors that favour new vessel growth such as VEGF. Besides VEGF, there are several growth factors and molecules included in angiogenesis such as HGF, IL-18 and nitric oxide.

Cancer, which has become the second-most prevalent health issue globally, is essentially a malfunction of cell signaling. Understanding how the intricate signaling networks of cells and tissues allow cancer to thrive – and how they can be turned into potent weapons against it – is the key to managing cancer in the clinic and improving the outcome of cancer therapies. In their ground-breaking textbook, the authors provide a compelling story of how cancer works on the molecular level, and how targeted therapies using kinase inhibitors and other modulators of signaling pathways can contain and eventually cure it. The first part of the book gives an introduction into the cell and molecular biology of cancer, focusing on the key mechanisms of cancer formation. The second part of the book introduces the main signaling transduction mechanisms responsible for carcinogenesis and compares their function in healthy versus cancer cells. In contrast to the complexity of its topic, the text is easy to read. 32 specially prepared teaching videos on key concepts and pathways in cancer signaling are available online for users of the print edition and have been integrated into the text in the enhanced e-book edition.

Cancer is a group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body. Not all tumors are cancerous; benign tumors do not spread to other parts of the body. Possible signs and symptoms include a lump, abnormal bleeding, prolonged cough, unexplained weight loss and a change in bowel movements. While these symptoms may indicate cancer, they may have other causes. Over 100 types of cancers affect humans. Cancer prevention is defined as active measures to decrease cancer risk. The vast majority of cancer cases are due to environmental risk factors. Many of these environmental factors are controllable lifestyle choices. Thus, cancer is generally preventable. Between 70% and 90% of common cancers are due to environmental factors and therefore potentially preventable. This book is intended to provide a relatively short overview of important concepts and notions on the molecular biology of human cancers, including many facts essential to find one's way in this field.

Logistic regression model were used to obtain relative risk (OR) estimates. Early age at menarche found to be a significantly strong risk factor during pre- and post-menopausal breast cancer group. Evaluation of the relationship between early age at menarche and late age at menopause, showed statistically significant increased risk in the ovarian and endometrial cancer too. The age at which premenopausal breast cancer women gave birth to her first child is increased with age at first birth. Also, nulliparity in breast, ovarian and endometrial cancer is associated with higher risk compared to those who had different number of births. These findings suggest that Albanian women have breast, ovarian and endometrial cancer risk factors similar to women in western countries that need to be studied further.

Helps researchers in proteomics and oncology work together to understand, prevent, and cure cancer Proteomic data is increasingly important to understanding the origin and progression of cancer; however, most oncologic researchers who depend on proteomics for their studies do not collect the data themselves. As a result, there is a knowledge gap between scientists, who devise proteomic techniques and collect the data, and the oncologic researchers, who are expected to interpret and apply proteomic data. Bridging the gap between proteomics and oncology research, this book explains how proteomic technology can be used to address some of the most important questions in cancer research. Proteomic Applications in Cancer Detection and Discovery enables readers to understand how proteomic data is acquired and analyzed and how it is interpreted. Author Timothy Veenstra has filled the book with examples—many based on his own firsthand research experience—that clearly demonstrate the application of proteomic technology in oncology research, including the discovery of novel biomarkers for different types of cancers. The book begins with a brief introduction to systems biology, explaining why cancer is a systems biology disease. Next, it covers such topics as: Mass spectrometry in cancer research Application of proteomics to global phosphorylation analysis Search for biomarkers in biofluids Rise and fall of proteomic patterns for cancer diagnostics Emergence of protein arrays Role of proteomics in personalized medicine The final chapter is dedicated to the future prospects of proteomics in cancer research. By guiding readers through the latest proteomic technologies and their applications in cancer research, Proteomic Applications in Cancer Detection and Discovery enhances the ability of researchers in proteomics and researchers in oncology to collaborate in order to better understand cancer and develop strategies to prevent and treat it.

Prostate cancer is a leading cause of death in USA. Proper management of disease requires better understanding of mechanisms involved in cancer growth and proliferation. Statins were shown to have beneficial effects in cancers, as proven by the many clinical trials supporting the evidence. Our research studied simvastatin effects and molecular mechanisms affecting prostate cancer in vitro and in vivo. We showed that simvastatin affected proliferation, colony formation and migration, in both androgen-dependent and –independent human prostate cancer. In vivo effects were supportive with a reduction of tumor size in proper experimental models. Mechanisms of effect of simvastatin on cancer cell micrometastasis were also studied using ECIS, gene arrays, adhesion assays immunocytochemistry and western blotting and showed its effects on integrin and endothelial barrier. The effect of combining simvastatin with docetaxel was also studied and showed promising results. In conclusion, our pre-clinical research shows beneficial effect of simvastatin alone or in combination with docetaxel in the management of prostate cancer and prevention of micrometastasis.

We conclude that survivin does not induce considerable humoral responses in lung cancer. Potentially, however, strong anti-survivin antibody responses can be elicited during the follow-up of the patients, whose clinical significance remains to be elucidated. These findings, together with our previous data concerning survivin expression and the related cytolytic T cell responses in lung cancer, signify a high tolerogenic potential of this tumor-associated antigen.

Majority of them are associated with tobacco chewing and usually preceded by premalignant lesions. On an average, about 1% of oral lesions transform into cancer annually.15 to 20% of dysplastic lesions develop into carcinoma. One of the primary reasons for the poor prognosis is the lack of significant and unique molecular tumor markers to assess risk and prognosis. Identification of better prognostic factors is necessary to assist in more accurate lesional staging and prediction of prognosis.

Although there are number of vaccines undergoing preclinical & clinical trials which are promising to be an effective anticancer therapy. Novel vaccines produce specific immune responses and objective clinical responses with minimal toxicity in phase I/II trials. Advances in gene transfer technology, tumor immunology and better methods of monitoring specific anti tumor immune responses allow the hope that tumor vaccines will be introduced into the clinic, at least in some malignancies resistant to systemic therapy so far such as melanoma and renal cell carcinoma. This book is based on generation of human cancer vaccines that has been tested in phase III clinical trials and shows mechanisms that could contribute to these limited clinical responses, and highlights the challenges faced for development of future vaccines.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer and leading cause of cancer deaths among women worldwide. Although the causes and natural history of breast cancer remain unclear, epidemiological research has uncovered genetic, biological, environmental and lifestyle risk factors for the disease. Over the past several decades, the risk of breast cancer in developed countries has increased by one to two percent annually. While data for developing countries are limited, cancer registries suggest that age-standardized incidence rates are rising even more rapidly in low-incidence regions such as Africa and Asia. As of 2012, there are 7 centers around Nepal that provide treatment for cancer, and Manipal College of Medical Sciences, Pokhara, is the only one in the western region. The centre has both a Linear Accelerator and a Telecobalt external radiotherapy unit. Since its inception in 2000, the center has treated nearly 950 patients with radiotherapy till 2008. The aim of this study was to determine the trends and to estimate the future load of patients with breast cancer requiring radiotherapy at Manipal Teaching Hospital, Pokhara, Nepal.

Dermatologists and oncologists are only beginning to grapple with these events, which pose serious quality-of-life issues with so many patients, and will become more prevalent as survival rates improve, thanks in part to new cancer treatments and drug regimens. Concentrating on a topic that has only been briefly touched upon by other texts, this book offers a focused perspective on the clinical presentation, underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms, and management of skin, hair, and nail conditions for oncologists, dermatologists, and allied practitioners. Dermatologic Principles and Practice in Oncology: Conditions of the Skin, Hair, and Nails in Cancer Patients: • Covers in detail the dermatologic adverse events of oncologic therapies, clinical presentations, and treatment recommendations • Enables dermatologists and other practitioners to significantly improve the care of patients with cancer • Addresses the dermatologic adverse events of cancer therapies used globally, of which a large number are found in developing countries • Emphasizes prophylactic measures – based on treatments used and type of cancer – to prevent the appearance of adverse events • Provides built-in discussions on patient education for practical counseling during therapies • Offers rapid-reference sections on topical dermatology drugs The first book to present dermatologic conditions in cancer patients and survivors in a uniform and in-depth manner, Dermatologic Principles and Practice in Oncology is ideal for oncologists, oncology nurses, and dermatologists who wish to take better care of those with adverse skin, hair, and nail conditions.

( … ) [It] is an acknowledgment that palliative radiotherapy is now a sub-specialty of radiation oncology. This formally makes palliative radiotherapy a priority within patient care, academic research, quality assurance, and medical education.” – From the Foreword by Nora Janjan, MD, MPSA, MBA, National Center for Policy Analysis, Dallas, TX, USA Palliative Medicine is the professional medical practice of prevention and relief of suffering and the support of the best possible quality of life for patients and their families, regardless of the stage of the disease or the need for other therapies. The most common cause for palliative care referral is terminal cancer, and a large proportion of those referrals include patients who will need palliative radiotherapy during the course of their disease. Still, there are barriers to coordinated care between radiation oncologists and palliative care physicians that differ from one country to another. Until now, one overarching limitation to appropriate concurrent care between the specialties across all countries has been the lack of a comprehensive yet concise reference resource that educates each of the specialties about the potential synergistic effects of their cooperation. This book fills that void. Radiation Oncology in Palliative Cancer Care: Is the first book-length treatment of this important topic available on the market Is authored by world-renowned experts in radiation oncology and palliative medicine Uses a multidisciplinary approach to content and patient treatment Features decision trees for palliative radiotherapy based upon factors such as patient performance status and prognosis Pays careful attention to current best practices and controversies in the delivery of end-of-life cancer care This book is an important resource for practicing radiation oncologists and radiation oncologists in training, as well as hospice and palliative medicine physicians and nurses, medical oncologists, and geriatricians.

38 Colon Cancer Meal Recipes: Vitamin Packed Foods That the Body Needs To Fight Back Without Using Drugs or PillsBy Joe Correa CSN Colon cancer is a cancer of the large intestines and is one of the most common forms of malignant diseases in the world. It forms with uncontrolled degenerative cell growth in the large intestines. About 5% of men and 3% of women will develop this serious disease in their lifetime. These statistics are surprising and should make you consider changing your lifestyle and diet habits as soon as possible. We still don't know what exactly causes colon cancer, but most doctors agree that a modern, Western diet high in fats and low in fibers increases the risk of this disease. These highly processed, unnatural, and unhealthy foods lead to chronic inflammatory diseases of the colon by affecting the microbes that live in it, which leads to cell degeneration. This is a good reason why you should focus more on eating healthy organic foods rather than jumping from one diet to another that often offer empty promises. Foods you have to include on a daily basis are: fresh fruits and vegetables, organic fish and poultry, nuts, seeds, and legumes. In order to clean your gastrointestinal tract and reduce the risk of colon cancer, your diet must be primarily based on beans, lentil, peas, and other foods that are high in folate. Along with valuable fiber, these foods are an enormous source of vitamin B that will protect your colon cells from damage. This book is a ...
