Handbook of Agricultural Economics: Marketing, Distribution, and Consumers

This first volume of the "Handbook of Agricultural Economics" presents work on topics central to the economics of agriculture: the quantitative representation of technology; market expectations; household production behaviour; consumer behaviour with uncertain quality and safety of goods; and issues of imperfect competition in food marketing. Volume IB deals with the economics of agricultural products after they leave the farm. Seven chapters explain recent developments in application of dual approaches in household economies, the industrial organization of food marketing, marketing margins between farm and retail prices, spatial price analysis, commodity storage and price stabilization, commodity futures and options markets, and the economics of food safety. Volumes IA and IB each follow their specialized chapters with a synthesis chapter that brings together and assesses the main themes and issues of the field, and volume IB concludes with an overall synthesis of the state of and prospects for agricultural economics as applied economic science.

Gain a holistic view of agricultural (re)insurance and capital market risk transfer Increasing agricultural production and food security remain key challenges for mankind. In order to meet global food demand, the Food and Agriculture Organisation estimates that production has to increase by 50% by 2050 and requires large investments. Agricultural insurance and financial instruments have been an integral part to advancing productivity and are becoming more important in increasingly globalized and specialized agricultural supply chains in the wake of potentially more frequent and severe natural disasters in today’s key producing markets. Underwriting, pricing and transferring agricultural risks is complex and requires a solid understanding of the production system, exposure, perils and the most suitable products, which vastly differ among developed and developing markets. In the last decade, new insurance schemes in emerging agricultural markets have greatly contributed to the large growth of the industry from a premium volume of US$10.1 billion (2006) to US$30.7 billion (2017). This growth is bound to continue as insurance penetration and exposure increase and new schemes are being developed. Agricultural (re)insurance has become a cornerstone of sovereign disaster risk financing frameworks. Agricultural Risk Transfer introduces the main concepts of agricultural (re)insurance and capital market risk transfer that are discussed through industry case studies. It also discusses best industry practices for all main insurance products for crop, livestock, aquaculture and forestry risks including risk assessment, underwriting, pricing, modelling and loss adjustment. Describes agricultural production risks and risk management approaches Covers risk transfer of production and financial risks through insurance and financial instruments Introduces modelling concepts for the main perils and key data sources that support risk transfer through indemnity- and index-based products Describes risk pricing and underwriting approaches for crop, livestock, aquaculture and forestry exposure in developed and developing agricultural systems Become familiar with risk transfer concepts to reinsurance and capital markets Get to know the current market landscape and main risk transfer products for individual producers, agribusinesses and governments through theory and comprehensive industry case studies Through Agricultural Risk Transfer, you’ll gain a holistic view of agricultural (re)insurance and capital market solutions which will support better underwriting, more structured product development and improved risk transfer.

Benedicto Msangya, James Nyangas Inaccessibility of Road Transport to Farmers

Tanzania economy depends on agriculture as its main stay, but still rural farmers suffer from poor road transport and high cost of transport of products to markets. Problems in transport sector affect agricultural production in two ways. Firstly, the time and energy spent on transport related activities reduce labour productivity because the transport charges have led the price of fertilizers to be very high, hence reduces the profits which labour could get. Secondly, increased market costs as a result of inadequate and poorly maintained roads that are passed on to farmers in terms of low farm -gate price. In many food-growing areas, crops are carried in many kilometers by head to the assembly markets or roadsides. Despite the efforts made by the government concerning road transport, still there is inadequate agricultural production in rural areas. Because of this structure of human settlement and production, road transport system assumes an extraordinarily important role in the economic development of an area. The study evaluates the impact of road transport on agricultural production. It was conducted at Mikese, Kiroka, Kinole and Mkambarani wards located in Morogoro District.

The research involves preliminary field investigation of the impacts of social demands on economic decisions made by producers, such agricultural management among farmers participating in Columbia's Famer's Market. The focus of the research will be on determining if social pressures to change agricultural management practices (increase of demand for organic products) have had any effect on the farmers. Also of concern to the research is how consumer requests for changes have affected farmers' agricultural decisions over time. The research will enhance MU visibility through its contribution to a growing social interest on agricultural production and management processes, to humanistic economic research on the social factors affecting economic decisions, and to anthropological work on the rapid growth of social interest in food production. The overall objective of this proposed research is to analyze the management and decision making of farmers in the Columbia's Farmer's Market to see the influence of social factors.

In general, it is also aimed at dependent and independent professionals in the public and private sectors of the economy and development community at large, with a view to providing them with the institutional memory they require to demonstrate their expertise on the job much better. To this end, the book offers the benefit of many years of experience in teaching, research, and community services, through a menu of topics for profitable reading about the inner mechanisms of the policy process for agricultural development of the country in real time. Herein is strenuously articulated the systematic outputs of disciplined hard work spanning three decades, from 1988 to 2018, including the last ten years of active engagements in policy advocacy outside the university system. The menu of nonexperimental writings provides information about the seemingly dry area of agricultural historiography of the country embedded in a series of analytical thoughts and expositions on performance of successive programs and projects for developing the agricultural economy.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2013 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: 4.0, Atlantic International University (BUSINESS STUDIES AND ECONOMICS), course: Development Studies, language: English, abstract: Improved agricultural systems need management skills such as planning and coordination of activities. Undesirable practices such as unbalanced utilization of resources, poor timing of activities lead to poor performance in the agricultural sector. Dynamic scheduling of activities, proper factor combinations, have limited production processes and production potential. Unpredictability changes within the changing environment as witnessed by hazards, weather, resource failure among other factors necessitates the dynamic scheduling systems to allow high conditions of production performance. Lack of efficient processes in regard to resources and activities that are coherent within the prevailing circumstances has always led to supply shock which ultimately affects other areas such as the industrial sector. Viability of agricultural production requires appropriate management strategies and adopting appropriate practices so as to maintain and increase the profitability of production ventures in a sustainable manner.

Mwaseba Dismas Impact of Agricultural Research

Since 1990s to date, there has been a growing global interest among researchers in impact assessment of research and development (R&D). Attention has specifically been placed on the impact of R&D interventions on target beneficiaries. In this regard, this work, besides reviewing studies on impact assessment of agricultural research in Tanzania it documents the experience of Tanzanian farmers in the use of innovations by focusing on rice research-based innovations. Adaptation rather than adoption of innovations is evident in smallholder rice farming. Moreover, it sheds light on the limitation of the production-based reductionist approach in assessing the impact of research on food security. The economic costs and benefits of rice research in rain-fed agriculture in Tanzania are also presented. In general, this book should be of great interest to students in agricultural extension, rural sociology, agricultural economics, development studies as well as managers of agricultural research.

Sam Beer The United States. Program for Agriculture in Post-Invasion Iraq

In the wake of the invasion of Iraq in 2003, the United States embarked on the massive project of rebuilding and transforming the agricultural sector in that country. This program was as controversial as the invasion itself, being variously portrayed as the hands-on altruism of Farm Belt army reservists or the neocolonial subjugation of Iraqi farmers to American corporations. Agricultural "development" in Iraq (and simultaneously, in Afghanistan) was conducted differently than previous such projects-largely by contractors rather than USAID employees, and in close coordination with the occupying military forces. While a popular opinion has emerged against the invasion itself, there has been little retrospective discussion about the goals or methods of agricultural aid in Iraq. With close examination of the changes enacted, this book sets out to foster that discussion.

Daniela Röttger Agricultural Finance for Smallholder Farmers. Rethinking Traditional Microfinance Risk and Cost Management Approaches

Even though traditional microfinance has successfully paved the way for offering financial services to low-income populations without traditional collateral, many microfinance institutions (MFIs) are still reluctant to move into rural areas and agricultural finance, due to the perceived high risks and costs.Daniela Röttger's research demonstrates how MFIs can mitigate risks and costs of lending to smallholder farmers by using a combination of proven traditional microfinance mechanisms while adapting specific loan features and lending mechanisms to the particularities of smallholder agriculture. She systematically compares traditional microfinance risk management mechanisms with agricultural microfinance approaches and identifies successful strategies. For this purpose, eight MFIs providing agricultural finance to smallholder farmers in four countries in East and West Africa (Uganda, Kenya, Benin, Cameroon) were interviewed and their loan features and agricultural lending mechanism were analyzed. The study shows that MFIs can successfully serve smallholder farmers in rural areas. However, the extent of adaptations is reason enough not to commit to such an endeavor lightly. A strong commitment combined with sound in-house knowledge of agricultural value chains and the flexibility to adapt loan terms and lending procedures to the particularities of agriculture are needed to successfully develop and sustain agricultural microfinance.

The objective of the study is to measure the technical efficiency of small holder farmers in sesame production. The study was conducted using a cross sectional data collected in 2015/2016-production year from a total sample of 110 households. Cobb-Douglas function was employed to estimate technical efficiency of smallholder farmers in sesame production. The finding of the study indicated that there is inefficiency in the production of sesame in the study area. The estimation of the frontier model with inefficiency variables shows that the mean technical efficiency of farmers is 0.69 (69%). This implies that production of sesame can be increased by 31 percent given the existing technological level. This indicates that the farmers did not using production inputs efficiently in such a way that they give their maximum potential. The estimated stochastic production frontier model together with the inefficiency parameters suggests that any attempt to strengthen technical efficiency of smallholder farmers in the study area must give due attention to the improvement of the principal causes for efficiency differentials such as education, age, ...

Analyses of results from data collated through well structured questionnaires indicated that the factors that affects farmers credit demand and choice includes, socio-economic and enterprise characteristics, indicators from the credit history of the farmer, as well as institutional or policy-based characteristics.Socio-economic and enterprise characteristics such as educational level, gender, farm capacity, and household asset were significant factors that influenced participant choice of credit institution in the study area. Poultry training was also found to be statistically significant. The positive sign associated with training indicates the importance of an increase in the training level of poultry farmers. Again, farmers with high likelihood to economics of scale and increase output have high ...

Edward Cheyney, John Philip Wentling The farm woodlot

"It is the purpose of this book to aid the farmer in the establishment, care, and utilization of such small patches or plantations of timber as may be maintained in connection with the farm. The actual operations and the information necessary to conduct them are described accurately, we hope, but in a brief and popular style. The history and significance of the forests are briefly sketched as a background for the more specific data which apply directly to the woodlot, but the complicated and technical problems which are encountered only in the management of large tracts of forest have been carefully avoided. It is hoped that the volume will prove of value to the woodlot owner as a handbook in the proper management of his tree crop, and as a textbook for the agricultural student, who should be familiar with the possibilities of all his farm lands."This handbook of forestry is a reprint of the original published in 1914. Illustrated with many historic pictures.

Many books on sustainability have been written in the last decade, most of them dealing with agricultural systems, communities, and general business practices. In contrast, Handbook of Sustainability for the Food Sciences presents the concept of sustainability as it applies to the food supply chain from farm to fork but with a special emphasis on processing. Structured in four sections, Handbook of Sustainability for the Food Sciences first covers the basic concepts of environmental sustainability and provides a detailed account of all the impacts of the food supply chain. Part two introduces the management principles of sustainability and the tools required to evaluate the environmental impacts of products and services as well as environmental claims and declarations. Part three looks at ways to alleviate food chain environmental impacts and includes chapters on air emissions, water and wastewater, solid waste, energy, packaging, and transportation. The final part summarizes the concepts presented in the book and looks at the measures that will be required in the near future to guarantee long term sustainability of the food supply chain. Handbook of Sustainability for the Food Sciences is aimed at food science professionals including food engineers, food scientists, product developers, managers, educators, and decision makers. It will also be of interest to students of food science.

Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: A, Wollega University (Haro Sabu Agricultural Research Center), language: English, abstract: Agricultural production in Ethiopia is characterized by subsistence orientation, low productivity, low level of technology and inputs, lack of infrastructures and market institutions, and extremely vulnerable to rainfall variability. Productivity performance in the agriculture sector is critical to improvement in overall economic well-being in Ethiopia. Low availability of improved or hybrid seed, lack of seed multiplication capacity, low profitability and efficiency of fertilizer, lack of irrigation development, lack of transport infrastructure, inaccessibility of market and prevalence of land degradation, unfertile soil, overgrazing, deforestation and desertification are among the constraints to agricultural productivity during last period. However, in 2011 the sector grew by 9% driven by cereal production which reached a record high of 19.10 million tons in Ethiopia.

Gurmu Bayissa Urgesa Smallholder Farmers. Use of ICT to Agricultural and Market Information

Providing access to information help farmers to increase their agricultural productivity and put them in a favorable market position in relation to other actors. Hence primary sources of information such as agricultural extension workers should be updated with agricultural and market information, how to collect and disseminate accurate and timely information to the farmers. This could be done through upgrading their skill or on job training by agricultural offices or other bodies working on agriculture and market information dissemination. As most farmers who are selling their produce to cooperatives in primary market get more price benefit than those who sale to small traders, the cooperatives should attract and bring them to the membership through price incentives. There should be a coordinated way of improving technological infrastructure (both telecommunication network and Electricity) between Ethio telecom and Electric power corporation in order to solve network and power disruption so that farmer can adopt and get access to the ICT.

Fikadu Goshu The Impact of Foreign Aid on Government Expenditure in Ethiopia

Scientific Study from the year 2014 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, Wollega University (Department of Economics), language: English, abstract: This study has examined the impact of foreign aid on government expenditure in Ethiopia over the period 1981 to 2012 using Multivariate Vector Auto Regression analysis. All the necessary time series tests such as stationary test, co-integration, weak exiguity, and other tests are conducted. The empirical result from the long run fungibility equation result indicates that sectoral aid has negative effect on its sector spending in developmental sectors except for agricultural sector government spending. The estimate of agricultural aid also support that a 1percent increase in agricultural aid leads to a 0.83percent increase in agricultural spending. Aid other than health aid also has positive impact on health spending. The positive coefficient of aid other than the health implies that there is an aid diversion towards health sector from the others. The negative coefficients of sectoral aid on the sector spending and the negative coefficients of aid other than sector-specific aid, indicate diversion of aid away from the specific sector. Negative coefficients of explanatory variables may arise when there is a diversion of categorical aid from developmental investment towards non developmental expenditure such as general service government expenditures. The result also shows education aid is fungible both in short and long run. H...

Examination Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Economics - Other, grade: 4.0/ EXCELLENT, , course: DEVELOPMENT ECONOMICS, language: English, abstract: This study assesses the response of rural households to output and input prices as well as technological changes in mixed crop production in Ethiopia, in case of Ada'a woreda selecting a sample size of 100 households using a non separable household modeling approach. Cobb Douglas function is used for the production and utility function and major constraints like land, labor, seed and fertilizer are considered in order to find the optimum values that would enable household maximize their utility. The most widely produced 7 crops in the village were selected. The optimal value exposes that mono cropping is better than multiple cropping to maximize utility. Output price, factor price and technology shocks were introduced in order to see how the households respond and how and to what extent that the production, consumption and welfare of households are changed. The finding of the study reveals that households tend to leave the agricultural sector if all input prices are increased by 10% and this is the case where the households face minimum welfare level. When output prices are increased by the same figure, farmers allocate all of their labor in the agricultural sector. A technological improvement by 20% on teff enables households to fully engage in agricultural activities and secure the highest utility compared to other ...

Wastes, whether they are solid wastes or wastewater, are resources from which economic values may be derived. Almost all components of agricultural and food wastewater can be and should be utilized or recovered; the stumbling block of achieving this aspiration is economical, not technical. The last one and a half decades have seen the surging of agricultural and non-agricultural commodity prices across the board and increased public consciousness of environmental impact of industrial wastewater discharge and treatment. The confluence of these new developments have generated new interests and applications of agricultural and food wastewater and their treatment residuals in diverse fields and industries. This new edition will expand topics related to wastewater utilizations and new uses of treatment residuals while providing up-to-date information on new treatment technologies and practices across the globe. The new edition’s target audience is anyone who has the responsibility of dealing with its plant effluents in agricultural and food processing operations. It should be of value to waste management personnel responsible for managing major waste effluents from agro and food industries. It will also be useful for college students whose majors are in environmental science or waste management fields as a reference.

Dr. Sushanta Kumar Mahapatra Livelihood pattern of Agricultural Labour Households in Rural India

The exploration of rural agricultural labour households believes significance, as they represent a vulnerable section of the rural population, whose percentage has increased drastically in almost all the states in India. An important trend in large number of theoretical and empirical studies on the functioning of rural labour markets has been appeared to explain the patterns of income, employment, extent of earning and indebtedness prevalent among these households. This book analyzes the trend in wages, inter-district and intra-district differences in wage rate and gender differences among the rural agricultural labour households in rural Orissa with a view to understand their livelihood pattern. The book also analyzes pattern of employment, income, extent of indebtedness and earning prevalent among rural landless labourers and agricultural households in rural Orissa. Further, the book discusses the prevailing contractual arrangement of the rural labour market. This book would be very useful for students, academicians, researchers, activists and policy makers for understanding the dynamics of rural labour market, wage determination, livelihood pattern and development.

Handbook of Environmental Economics: Volume 3: Economywide and International Environmental Issues

Many of the frontiers of environmental economics research are at the interface of large-scale and long-term environmental change with national and global economic systems. This is also where some of the most of challenging environmental policy issues occur. Volume 3 of the Handbook of Environmental Economics provides a synthesis of the latest theory on economywide and international environmental issues and a critical review of models for analyzing those issues. It begins with chapters on the fundamental relationships that connect environmental resources to economic growth and long-run social welfare. The following chapters consider how environmental policy differs in a general-equiIibrium setting from a partial-equilibrium setting and in a distorted economy from a perfect economy. The volume closes with chapters on environmental issues that cross or transcend national borders, such as trade and the environment, biodiversity conservation, acid rain, ozone depletion, and global climate change. The volume provides a useful reference for not only natural resource and environmental economists but also international economists, development economists, and macroeconomists. Teshome Hiwot, Bogale Ayalneh Rain fall risk, farmers perception and demand for insurance

It is known that agricultural producers around the world are exposed to a variety of income uncertainties, both market related such as price variations, as well as non-market related, unstable weather patterns. It is well known that these uncertainties induce significant income risks, particularly detrimental to small and/or poor producers in developing countries. Over the years, a range of risk management strategies have been used to reduce, or to assist smallholder farmers to absorb, some of agricultural risks. Since insurance is potentially an important instrument to transfer part of the risks, this study try to assess weather related risks faced on smallholder farmers and their demand for the rainfall risk insurance. This book is addressing smallholder farmers' in Ethiopia whose livelihood is depend on agriculture, and are suffering from climate related risks.

The Handbook of High-Frequency Trading and Modeling in Finance also features: • Contributions by well-known experts within the academic, industrial, and regulatory fields • A well-structured outline on the various data analysis methodologies used to identify new trading opportunities • Newly emerging quantitative tools that address growing concerns relating to high-frequency data such as stochastic volatility and volatility tracking; stochastic jump processes for limit-order books and broader market indicators; and options markets • Practical applications using real-world data to help readers better understand the presented material The Handbook of High-Frequency Trading and Modeling in Finance is an excellent reference for professionals in the fields of business, applied statistics, econometrics, and financial engineering. The handbook is also a good supplement for graduate and MBA-level courses on quantitative finance, volatility, and financial econometrics.
