Depending on the pollutant type, certain wastewater treatment technologies can be very energy intensive. This "Diplomarbiet" looks at Catalytic Wet Air Oxidation (CWAO) for treatment of organic contaminated waste water. With an aim to reduce energy consumption a new catalyst was designed to enable total oxidation of organic contaminants in water at a much lower temperature compared to existing catalysts. This in turn allows to operate the CWAO at much lower operating pressures as compared to conventional CWAO utilizing noble metal catalysts. The catalyst also demonstrated good stability and activity over extended period and no significant leaching was observed. Low temperature CWAO is an effective technology for treatment of organic contaminated waste and its application range can be extended if coupled with other wastewater treatment technologies.

Water is less available on the African continent than any other yet it is almost common knowledge that there is a significant lack of proper wastewater treatment in most of the continent’s countries thereby exposing the scarce water resource to pollution.The inadequacy in treatment stems from a number of reasons that include lack of tertiary systems for extended treatment. Endocrine Disruption Chemicals (EDCs) are persistent against conventional wastewater treatment method. It was ascertained that ozone can effectively degrade and mineralize most of the EDCs. For this, ozonolysis of a model EDC, Diclofenac sodium (DFS) has been carried out in sami-batch process to get necessary kinetics. With this, a simulation model has been developed for flow ozone membrane reactor. Because this reactor can simultaneously mineralize and separate EDCs effectively from water and wastewater. Afterwards a model simulation has been carried out for ozone membrane reactor to predict its performance. Model simulation predicted mineralization of EDC (DFS) from water and wastewater. This work will be helpful for water treatment industries to develop suitable membrane (i.e., characteristic parameters of membrane such as efficiency, molecular weight cut-off and enhancement) to treat EDCs from water and wastewater.

Spentwash is the principal pollutant stream from distilleries which produce large volumes of wastewater, characterised by variable volumes due to the seasonal nature of production, high in organic load, low in pH and having high carbon-to-nitrogen ratios. This results in pollution of soil, ground and surface water if the wastewater is disposed off without treatment. Regulatory bodies therefore impose restrictions on the nature, amount and means of disposal of distillery wastewater. Due to the organic nature of distillery wastewater, biodegradation is a viable option for the treatment. During the present study, spentwash was treated anaerobically (Microbial Fuel Cell 1 and 2) followed by the treatment of optimal effluent from MFC-1 &2 aerobically in RBC.

The result were yields of onion for all treatments were analyzed statistically and no significant differences were found among the treatments of polluted groundwater by municipal waste and normal well water.

For the first time in Iran, the multilayer perceptron feed forward neural network with a hidden layer and stop training method was used to predict quality parameters of the industrial effluent. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) technique was applied to improve performance of generated models of neural networks. Also, factor analysis method were used to determine the effective parameters that improve the models accuracy and efficiency.

Reactive dyes have been identified as problematic compounds in wastewater from textile industries as they are water soluble and cannot be easily removed by conventional aerobic biological treatment systems. The bioflocculant is effective in flocculating a kind of reactive soluble dye (Cibacron yellow FN_2R) in aqueous solution. A bioflocculant–producing bacterium was isolated from wastewater and sediments of Close Drainage Systems (CDS) located at the Prai area of Penang, Malaysia. The treat-ability of a reactive dye (Cibacron yellow FN_2R) by sequencing batch reactor and the influence of the dye on concentration on system performance were investigated in this study. Employing reactive dye by Sphingomonas paucimobilis bacteria at sequence batch reactor is a novel approach of dye removal. The book shows a bioflocculant produced by Sphingomonas paucimobilis was effective for the reduction of dye (Cibacron Yellow FN-2R).

The treatment of highly colored wastewater containing hazardous industrial chemicals and dyes is one of the growing needs of the present time. The conventional wastewater treatment does not always satisfactorily cleanse the wastewater containing dyes. In order to cleanse water of these extra-stable organics, so-called advance oxygen processes (AOPs) have been developed. The aim of these methods is to mineralize the pollutants to CO2, H2O and mineral acids and salts. Titanium dioxide photocatalysis belongs to the group of AOPs and has been extensively studied over the last 20 years. The use of TiO2 as slurries in wastewater treatment has some disadvantages: the separation of fine particles is slow and penetration of light is limited. These problems can be minimized by supporting TiO2 on various materials. The goals of present work were: (1) preparation of immobilized TiO2 films by various techniques and their characterization; (2) study the photocatalytic degradation of aqueous amaranth solution using the prepared TiO2 films; (3) study the combined effect of photodegradation and adsorption; (4) comparing the performance of prepared films.

So, post treatment of Anaerobic bioreactor effluents was carried out in CWs containing macrophytes (Arundo donax and Eichhornia crassipes) reduce COD (89%), turbidity (99%).Wetlands containing algal biomass were not effective in treating majority of water quality parameters. Inhibition of algal biomass was observed due to physicochemical characteristics of wastewater. The integrated treatment system consisting of IC bioreactor and macrophytes is a more suitable option to treat industrial wastewater.

The experiments were conducted to develop an integrated treatment system for coffee processing wastewater (CPWW) through the combination of biomethanation with aeration and wetland plants treatment. The biomethanation was carried out at different hydraulic retention times (HRTs) using upflow anaerobic hybrid reactor (UAHR) and 18 h of HRT was found to be optimum. The maximum biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total solids (TS) reduction were 66.0%, 61.0% and 58.0%, respectively with organic loading rate of 9.55 kg m-3 day-1. The reduction of pollution load of the wastewater by microbial action augmented by aeration resulted in the reduction of electrical conductivity (EC), BOD, COD, and total solids (TS). Continuous aeration of wastewater resulted in maximum of 74.6% and 68.6% reduction of BOD and COD. The wetland plant, Typha latifolia reduced 85.4% and 78.0% of BOD and COD, respectively in biomethanated cum aerated CPWW.

A renewed interest has been seen among the farmers of Mymensingh to use the wastewater for their agricultural production. Bases on the population of the studied area, it seems that a large amount of waste water is always available in the periurban areas providing a reliable water supply for the farmers. Wastewater increases soil fertility resulting in the increased agricultural production with no cost. It is found that significant amount of pollutants can be reduced by simply passing the wastewater through the channel containing water hyacinth. Various parameters related to the nutrients such as NH4, PO4, TDS, EC were studied and their correlation with the productivity is established. The increased value of pH reduces the acidity of the soil resulting in the increased productivity. Similarly, yield was reported to be increased with the decrease of total solids in the wastewater. The amount of NH4 in the wastewater has direct correlation with correlation with the yield. Higher NH4 was observed to inhibit the plants growth and hence the lower yield.

On the environment and economic side, the selection of the best adsorbent is a key issue that receives large attention. The technical feasibility of various adsorbents for dyes removal from contaminated water has been reviewed. Instead of using commercial activated carbon, the author of this book has worked on industrial waste material. In this book, locally available mangrove bark was studied for its potential use as an adsorbent for the removal of different types of dyes from aqueous solution. Factor affecting the efficiency of dyes removal were evaluated.
