Fish is a major source of dietary animal protein to most people in Malawi. One of the most widely accepted and consumed fish species in the country is the Lake Malawi Tilapia locally known as "Chambo". Fresh fish are transported from the lake to distant markets preserved in ice and often in poor storage conditions, and sold in the open due to lack of storage facilities such as refrigerators and cold rooms. As a highly perishable commodity, safety and quality awareness is of paramount importance to fish processors but also safeguarding consumer health. This work assessed quality of fresh Chambo by estimating its shelf life when stored in ice then assessing its quality in local and super markets in Malawi. Findings suggest that Chambo has a longer shelf life stored in ice (more than 14 days). This is advantageous to small scale fresh fish sellers and processors especially from rural areas in Malawi who solely depend on ice as the only affordable way of preserving fresh fish. Quality of fresh Chambo from super markets was no better than fish sold at local markets underpinning the importance of quality and safety checks at every stage.

Growing urbanization and developmental projects and buildings in the city has promoted the need for sand and there by excavation. Sand excavation is an important pull factor, especially, for young people who migrate to cities out of poverty. This occupation contributes as an important pull factor for the circular migration from the nearby villages to metro cities. Many people are engaged in such occupation in the creeks in Mumbai. Majority of them are tribals who have migrated from nearby district of Thane. Among many hazardous jobs, sand excavation is hazardous and difficult to perform. As these people are exposed to hazardous job and poor living condition, theyare vulnerable to various health problems; injuries and illness. Excessive exposure to depth of water causes various health problems among the workers who go deep in the water. These workers may suffer from bleeding from ear, nose and mouth, deafness, injuries to the various body parts. Sometime, it could also lead to death of workers. This is study done to understand the health status and utilization of health care services of these people who are engaged in such hazardous job of sand excavation in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

Although there is widespread food availability in urban areas across the Global South, it is not correlated with universal access to adequate amounts of nutritious foods. This report is based on a household survey conducted in 2015 in six low-income informal areas in Malawi’s capital city, where three-quarters of the population live in informal settlements. Understanding the dimensions of household food insecurity in these neighbourhoods is critical to sustainable and inclusive growth in Lilongwe. The survey findings provide a complementary perspective to the 2008 AFSUN survey conducted in Blantyre, which suggested a level of food security in urban Malawi that was probably more typical of peri-urban areas where many people farm. Given that informal settlements house most of Malawi’s urban residents, the Lilongwe research presents a serious public policy challenge for the country’s leaders. Poverty is a profound problem in Malawi’s rapidly expanding cities. Of particular concern is the poor quality of diets among residents of informal settlements. Precarity of income, reflected in the survey findings of frequent purchasing of staple foods and the need for food sellers to extend credit, appears to be a key driver of food insecurity in these communities. Economically inclusive growth, with better prospects for stable employment and protection for informal-sector workers, appears to be the surest route to improved urban food security in Malawi.

All across America, in every state, across industries and occupations, workers are being injured, or killed on the job, or exposed to toxic chemicals from which they are dying. What has happened to our nation that has allowed corporations and insurers to throw away the lives, the health of so many without caring, without fear of exposure, without being held accountable? It's called Workers' Compensation: the system we thought was there to protect us if we were injured on the job.The title refers to a workers' compensation system in which worker deaths often cost an employer far less than correcting a safety/health hazard in the workplace; and a system in which the employer is virtually immune from prosecution for the depraved indifference that results in severe injury, toxic exposure, or death.Depraved Indifference represents over five years of research and interviews. The last chapter explores where we can go from here to create a system of fairness and justice, a system that works; that puts the responsibility and accountability on the employer to make the workplace safe for workers.

In "The Insurance Professional's Practical Guide to Workers' Compensation," Boggs addresses in clear, jargon-free English many of the concepts, policies and practices in workers compensation that brokers, risk advisors, and corporate risk managers need to know. The chapters, such as on which injuries and which workers are covered, free the reader from having to wade through dense legal and regulatory treatises. Boggs explains to non-lawyers legal aspects of workers compensation. If you need to use the book as little as one time a year, get it, because you'll probably need it much more often.

Since the discovery and exploitation of minerals like gold, diamond and copper in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Malawi has played the role of a labour supplier. Malawians were attracted by the relatively higher wages obtaining in the South African mines up to the period of the decline in mine migrancy at the end of the 1980s. Following this decline, a cross-section of Malawians continued to emigrate to South Africa to seek various jobs in the burgeoning informal sector and also for trade purposes. Migration from Malawi to South Africa sheds light on the problems that labour migrants and traders encounter as they are ‘toing’ and ‘froing’ between Malawi and South Africa in pursuit of their respective goals. It shows that migration, which initially was exclusively done for wage employment, is becoming more complex by the day. This is a result of the infusion of elements of commercial migration, smuggling and human trafficking. The book advances the argument that the numbers of migrants to South Africa increased in the post-1994 period partly as a result of mal-administration by the successive democratically-elected governments in Malawi. This development weakened Malawi’s otherwise promising economy and impoverished the rural masses. The book ‘sees’ forlorn hope in the future of labour migrants and traders, unless the Malawi Government starts to genuinely have the welfare of the populace at heart! The book is relevant and...

Land degradation and soil erosion are significant environmental problems affecting agricultural productivity and livelihood in Malawi. A number of soil fertility improvement technologies are being promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture and non governmental organization, in order to improve agricultural productivity and food security. In spite of the growing awareness of low cost soil fertility technologies, the rate of adoption and continued use of the technologies remain limited. The thesis examines farmer's perception of the current level of soil fertility and factors effecting farmers use of different soil fertility improvement technologies, using example of farmers from Machinga and Zomba Districts, in Malawi. The results provide insights for designing appropriate strategies, policies and programmes aimed at promoting adoption of soil fertility improvement technologies.

Since independence in 1964, Malawi's social policies were universal, built in a socialist framework and delivered by the state in sectors such as education, health, food, water, housing, and energy. Following the weakening and/or dismantling in the late 1980s to early 1990s, of the heavy state apparatus and interventions in the provisioning of these social services, both poverty and vulnerability deepened and broadened. Under the advice and/or coercion of the World Bank and IMF, the down-sizing and closure of state operations were aimed at cutting public spending and enhancing government's ability to repay its bad debts so that it can borrow fresh ones. However, both the approach and speed at which these reforms ensued drove many able-bodied people into joblessness and poverty, and chronically poor into state of destitution. The book picks on the Amartya Sen's entitlement theory, to analyze the social and economic benefits of direct cash transfers vis-à-vis in-kind transfers in addressing the rising chronic poverty and vulnerability among both the able-bodied and labour-poor households. Two case studies from Malawi are used to demonstrate the field evidence.

Labour migration from Malawi to South Africa is a ‘century-old phenomenon’. It dates as far back as the 1880s following the establishment of diamond and gold mines. In the period up to the 1980s, this migration took either formal or informal nature whereas in the post-1990 period it became exclusively informal, popularly known as selufu in Malawi. This book is an attempt to shed light on both forms of migration over time. By using the case of Mzimba, one of the major labour migration districts in Malawi, Perspectives of Labour Migration shows that migration, especially in the post-1990 period, remains a preoccupation of the different categories of both men and women in selected areas in the country. A cross-section of Malawians continue to regard emigration to South Africa as a means to an end: a way of fulfilling their heart-felt and life-time goals at household and societal levels. Because of their distinguished and unparalleled determination, these labour migrants continue to ‘flock’ to South Africa in the midst of such challenges as xenophobia, crime, arrests and deportations. The book advances the argument that Malawian labour migrants are purposive and rational human beings who are ready to overcome these challenges, at times using the most improbable means, for example, through the use of mankhwala gha mwabi (luck medicine).

Low H/Center deliveries; Globally 56% of women deliver with a skilled attendant however; the rate is extremely lower in most African countries. Skilled attendance at delivery is a key indicator to measure the MDG goal to improve maternal health. While skilled attendance is nearly universal in Europe at 99.1%, in Africa the rate has only been rising by 0.2% per year for the past decade. At this rate, by the year 2015, the average skilled attendance in Africa will still be less than 50% implying that attaining MDG goal 5 by 2015 might remain a dream. This book is based on investigation of factors for low institutional deliveries in a resource poor country Uganda. It contributes invaluable information on health systems and community based factors that deter pregnant mothers from delivering in nearby health centers. Health workers perceptions and understanding of maternal health indicators, availability of adequate infrastructure and various social economic factors impact a lot on mother's decision on a place of delivery. This book is designed to benefit a wide range of PHC and R/Health planners, hospital administrators, policy makers and researchers especially in developing countries

Ethiopian migrant workers, a great majority of whom being women, travel through regular and irregular channels to get to some of their major destination countries in the Middle East and the Gulf. These migrant workers primarily engage in low skilled areas of domestic and care services which are often left out of a right based discourse. Domestic and care works, often occupied by migrant domestic workers, are not regarded as work proper and therefore they are not regulated by the domestic labor laws of destination countries. However, the major problems faced by migrant domestic workers are violations of those basic rights, which are suppose to be protected under International Human Rights instruments and the international law on migration. This book analyzes the body of international human rights instruments and international law on migration and their applicability to migrant workers in general and migrant domestic workers in particular including those in irregular situation. Furthermore, it expounds on the history, trajectory, push and pull factors of Ethiopians' labor migration as well as the abuses and violations that this group suffers in all stages of the migration process.

Mustahab Ayami The Booming of Media Freedom in Malawi

Suppression of the media is a tool a number of African leaders used in the post-independence era to consolidate their grip on power and to silence opposing views. Malawi’s former president Banda, who led the country to independence from Britain in 1964, was one such leader. The suffocation of the media further created a culture where people suffered in silence as their freedom of expression was gravely stifled. This book examines the media in Malawi in the post-Banda era which came to an end following the wind of change that brought in multiparty democracy with the first elections held in 1994. It finds that the media still face a number of serious challenges despite a constitutional provision which guarantees media freedom. It, thus establishes that though formal media freedom is a necessary condition for a free media, it is in itself not sufficient. Moreover, in the long term, Malawi needs to achieve a higher level of economic activity enabling the media to operate in a market with sufficient consumers to generate the revenues able to make the media commercially viable. The country may then have attained sufficient conditions for the development of a free media.

This book is a must-read book for everyone who would want to see Malawi transformed from poverty to a wealthy nation. The book was developed from a conviction that Malawi seriously needs a vibrant economic system that would create its own wealth in all subsectors of the economy. It is envisaged that if the strategic management principles and concepts presented in this book are applied, our nation will enjoy wealth because it will become wealthier. The solution to challenges facing Malawi require us to seriously rethink the crafting of a long-term vision and mission statement that should be directly linked with long-term development strategy and should be backed up by well-defined, long-term implementation of goals that will see both private and public sectors being adaptive, revolutionized, reconstructed, created, and recreated in some instances, and it should not forget the stakeholder management approach. To achieve this goal comes the three players that form the economy to participate in running the total economy. These players are the individuals (households), firms, and the state. The individuals and the firms form the microeconomics and the private sector while the state forms the macroeconomics and the public sector. This is a call for a vibrant private sector and a new public management. Topics include the following:Creation or recreation? The nations wealth Strategic moves for becoming wealthy The nature of the public and private sectors Creating vibrant private and ...
