A preliminary review of water quality, bed sediment, and reservoir sediment-coring data in the watershed reveals a complex hydrological system, with varying potential sources of contamination. Within the lower portion of the watershed (defined as from the dams at Elephant Butte Reservoir in New Mexico and Red Bluff Reservoir in Texas co the Gulf of Mexico) arsenic, lead, and mercury appear at levels and/ or trends which may be of concern.Through the use of a geographic information system, this project evaluates the extent of contamination from selected toxic substances, identifies potential sources and/ or naturally-occurring conditions for the contribution of these toxic substances, and evaluates the potential for using Geographic Information Systems to model the watershed. In this study, the concentrations of five heavy metals (Pb, Zn, Mn, Cu and Fe) were determined in raw water, sediments and in aquatic macrophytes from selected sites at the Barekese reservoir in Ghana between the periods of June 2011 and January 2012. The obtained results showed that the mean concentration ranges for lead (0.04-0.25 mg/L) and iron (0.49-0.89 mg/L) in the reservoir water exceeded the WHO guideline values of 0.01mg/L and 0.30mg/L respectively for drinking water. The reservoir water was thus concluded as unfit for drinking except after adequate treatment. Comparison of the levels of heavy metals in sediments with the Numerical Sediment Quality Guidelines values showed the sediments as heavily polluted with lead and copper at certain sites of the reservoir. Good information were also provided by analysis of whole plants and organs of passive aquatic macrophytes (Typha domingensis, Ceratophyllum demersum, Pistia stratiotes and Lemna paucicostata). Metals in the plant species were higher in roots than shoots. The mean heavy metal concentrations in all the water, sediments and macrophytes were observed in the sequence; Fe > Cu > Mn > Pb > Zn.

This water may either be treated or untreated. River banks could be very busy, varied activities ranging from farming to industrial activities and other domestic household activities are conducted. The present study aimed at investigating the potential sources of selected heavy metal contaminants in River Mukurumudzi, Kwale County. Water and sediments were sampled in four points along the river impacted by mining, human settlements and agricultural activities for three different seasons. The samples were analyzed for Iron, Lead, Cadmium, Copper and Arsenic using an AAS. Sediment quality was also analysed by the calculation of CF and I-geo values. Interpretation of results was conducted using Minitab statistical software and Excel spreadsheets. The range of metals in water during the dry season was Fe (0.19-0.32) mg/l, Pb, Cu, Cd and As were below the detection limits. The range of metals in water during the short rain was Fe (0.12-1.25) mg/l and BDL for all other analysed metals. The range of metals in water during the long rain season was Fe (0.07-1.82) mg/l, Cu (0.08-0.11) mg/l and BDL for all the other analysed metals. A comprehensive analytical, statistical and spatial distribution of heavy metals in ground water in the study area has been presented in this book using SPSS® statistical package (Window Version 10.0) and curve fitting method in arc view GIS software. GIS database helps in decision-making process by identifying the most sensitive zones that need immediate attention. The concentration of studied heavy metals in the water sources of the area is beyond the permissible limits of WHO. The immediate involvement of the research community is needed to combat the slow-onset disaster. The environment, economic growth and development of Bangladesh are highly influenced by water-its regional and seasonal availability and the quality of surface and groundwater. Surface water of Dhaka metropolitan city is unprotected. An investigation was carried out to study As, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb and Zn contents and the hazards of these trace metal contamination in pond, lake and river waters of Dhaka metropolitan city. The average concentration of As, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb and Zn were varied from 0.002 to 0.006, 0.030 to 0.413, 0.227 to 0.690, 0.173 to 0.900, 0.113 to 0.390 and 0.01 to 0.23 ppm, respectively. According to drinking water (potable water), public water, irrigation water and for aquaculture standard As, Cu, and Zn toxicity were not detected. In most cases, the concentrations of Mn and Pb were considered as toxicants. Seasonal fluctuations of concentrations were also found in all samples.

Mercury (Hg) is one of the most harmful metals to the environment. This study focuses on factors that influence mercury distribution in sediments and its bioavailability. Given the history of contamination in the Tagus estuary, sediment cores were collected and pore waters were separated from two sites: one heavily contaminated, Cala do Norte (CN), and a non-contaminated, Ponta da Erva (PE). The levels of total Hg and methylmercury (MeHg) in solid sediments and dissolved Hg (HgR and HgT) and MeHg in the pore waters were analyzed and compared to other parameters in sediments. Total Hg concentrations were noticeable higher in CN than in PE. Concentrations of MeHg showed the same trend. In both places, despite the differences in concentrations, HgT and MeHg were in equilibrium between the pore waters and the solid fractions. The diffusive fluxes were calculated across the sediment/water interface in order to assess the mobility of Hg species, considering the MeHg toxicity. These fluxes evidenced the diffusive transport of Hg from the pore waters to the overlying water in both sites reflecting the importance of sediment characteristics that enhance the Hg methylation processes.

Intensifying agricultural practices, lead to high input of pesticides and spread of their residue contamination over catchments raising concern over the health hazard posed by the presence of pesticide residues in the environment. This study aim at providing a basis for monitoring pesticides residue contamination of the water bodies in Lake Naivasha catchment through; identifying the pesticides applied in the catchment, the status of selected pesticides and their potential effect to human health and life of aquatic organisms. The study found that 59%of the pesticides applied within the L. Naivasha catchment are moderately to extremely hazardous, while more than 40% of the pesticides are moderately to highly persistence in the environment. 22% of the applied pesticides were of international concern because of their toxicity (moderately to extremely hazardous) and persistence (highly persistence). The L. Naivasha catchment was found to be contaminated by 4,4-DDT, 2,4-DDE, 4,4-DDD, γ-HCH, α-HCH and Aldrin, with higher concentrations in the sediment than the water phase.

The aim of this study is to explore the contributing factors in improving women's survival in Bangladesh.The proposed supply and demand conceptual framework provides an explanation for analyzing the importance of improved health of women and newborns to reduce maternal and perinatal/neonatal mortality for the overall improvement of women's survival in the context of Bangladesh. Data from the Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (BDHS) and Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) are used to describe the changes in women's health situation in Bangladesh. The results show that a considerable decline in infant and child mortality has taken place over the past one decade.This is reflected in the gain in life expectancy of women of Bangladesh.The outcomes of this research could contribute to the literature for the researchers, planners and policy makers those who are working in this area.

The Ready Made Garments (RMG) sector emerged as an important economic sector of Bangladesh from early 1980s. The importance of RMG sector for the national economy of Bangladesh can hardly be overemphasized. The industry has contributed to export earnings, foreign exchange earnings, employment creation, poverty alleviation and the empowerment of women. In the recent past incidence of physical violence, gherao, demonstrations, rallies, work stoppages/strike, termination of workers, lay-off, lock-out, etc. in the readymade garment sector of Bangladesh have noticeably increased. In the backdrop of frequent clashes between owners of garments factories and disgruntle workers this study attempts to verify whether or not Workers' Participation in Management (WPM) is being practiced here in the RMG Sector of Bangladesh. The study found that WPM does not in the real sense exist, in the RMG sector of Bangladesh. The researches proposed some recommendations for the Government and the concerned associations of both employers and workers to help WPM exercised in the RMG sector of Bangladesh.

Particularly, the sufferings of the people of Dehergoti Union under this upazila are worse. While the Govt. initiatives are not well enough to mitigate the river erosion the community people of this area became successful in this work by using their indigenous knowledge/practice. Using local resources (bamboo, rope, bricks and iron spike) they made bamboo cages and throw those into the river. These cages make the river wave weaker which decrease river erosion in a satisfactory rate.

In the present context of arsenic pollution of shallow ground water aquifer, rainwater harvesting is being seriously considered as an alternative option for water supply in the arsenic affected areas. There is no extensive study of the seasonal variation of harvested rainwater as well as its suitability for drinking purpose throughout the year especially during the dry period. The main objectives of this book are to investigate seasonal quality of harvested rainwater, mineral contents and people's perception of rainwater harvesting. This study was performed at Shyamnagar thana under Satkhira district, one of the coastal area of Bangladesh. Bangladesh is one of the moderate developing and most disaster prone country in the world. This country is already vulnerable to extreme climate events such as cyclones, storm surges and floods. During the last 30 years cyclone has taken a great place in Bangladesh and it has been hit with worst ever cyclone in its history. Over last 30 years (1970-2007) different scales of cyclones have been affecting the country with loss of valuable lives and property. The effectiveness of ripe Musa sapientum (MSR) and ripe Musa cardaba (MCR) peels in the removal of Cd2+, Fe2+, Pb2+, Zn2+ ions was investigated. The amount of metal ions sorbed depended on the metal ion - adsorbent contact time, ion concentration and adsorbent weight. Weight of adsorbent was varied between 0.1 - 0.4g; contact time, 5 - 25 minutes; and ion concentration, 0.01 - 0.04M. The results indicated that Musa sapientum (Ripe) showed higher percentage sorption in removing metal ions from waste water than Musa cardaba (Ripe) peels. The peak percentage sorption of metal ions by MSR peel waste are; Cd2+ (99.95%), Fe2+ (100%), Pb2+ (100%), Zn2+ (99.92%) while metal ions by MCR peel waste was; Cd2+ (99.74%), Fe2+ (99.83%), Pb2+ (100%), Zn2+ (99.60%). The results obtained above showed that both adsorbent species are favourable for sorption and removal of the test heavy metals from their aqueous environment. Nevertheless, ripe Musa sapientum (MSR) is highly recommended for both Fe2+ and Pb2+ uptake due to its sorption capacity and efficiency.

The McMurdo Dry Valleys region of Antarctica represents one of the harshest, most extreme environments on Earth. Despite these conditions, life still manages to survive in the ice-covered lakes that exist within these valleys. Each of these lakes exhibits a unique and fascinating environment, and Lake Hoare is no exception. This work provides an overview of the modern and historical character of Lake Hoare and the Dry Valleys environment, and also presents the results of new research pertaining to the history of Lake Hoare. This research consisted of collecting and analyzing sediment cores from the lake bottom, and using the results to reconstruct the recent history of Lake Hoare. The goal of this study was to take existing knowledge of the physical, chemical and biological processes currently operating in the modern lake environment and use it to explain observed changes within the sediment core and, thus, the lake in the past. This work presents a new method for reconstructing sediment pore water salinity, new data on the physical and chemical changes within the lake sediment and further insight into existing interpretations of the history of Lake Hoare and Taylor Valley.

However, the trends of practices are representing the positive approach to the integrative and ethical perspectives on gender issues in commercial banks of Bangladesh over time which could be proved in future for the time being.

Relatively a huge number of populations who came from different parts of India mainly from Bihar after the partition of the sub-continent (Ahmed, 2003) in 1947 and settled in Bangladesh and opposed the liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971 are known as Bihari, a stateless community, artificial minority or stranded Pakistanis. The Bihari community in Bangladesh is deprived of all rights. They are subject to deprivation. They could hardly manage jobs for themselves, which reflected their economic insecurity and food insecurity as well. Inadequate medical facilities in the camps indicated their insecurity of health, thereby becoming vulnerable to various diseases and poor health with debilitating illness. Absence of ownership of land is a violation of human rights. Personal security gets hampered due to identity crisis of the Bihari people because they are not considered citizens of Bangladesh .as well as they do not have any political rights (though court declared their voting right in 2008) to participate in party politics by which they could protect themselves from violation of human rights and other forms of criminal activities. They were excluded from mainstream society.

The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) disaster that occurred in Ukraine on April 26, 1986, was one of the most devastating in human history. Using this as a case study, the AGU monograph Groundwater Vulnerability: Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster is devoted to the problem of groundwater vulnerability, where the results of long-term field and modeling investigations of radionuclide transport in soil and groundwater, within the Ukrainian part of the Dnieper River basin (Kyiv region of Ukraine), are discussed. The authors provide a comprehensive review of existing literature on the assessment of groundwater vulnerability and then describe an improved methodology, which is developed based on integration of the methods of hydrogeological zonation and modeling of anomalously fast migration of radioactive contaminants from the land surface toward groundwater. This volume also includes the evaluation of the effect of preferential and episodic flow on transport of radionuclides toward the aquifers and risk assessment of groundwater vulnerability, which can further assist future researchers in developing remediation technologies for improving drinking water quality. Accumulation of heavy metals in living organisms provides a handy reference for elaborating the nature and extent of chemical pollution in water bodies. Kabul River, the major source of drinking and irrigation water for millions of people in Afghanistan and Pakistan,is contaminated with heavy metals from variety of sources, which need to be checked, for safeguarding fish habitat and securing consumers health. A research study of Hazara University is presented here shows the load of heavy metals accumulation in body parts of common fishes. The fishes analysed for this purpose included Wallago attu, Aorichthys seenghala, Cyprinus carpio, Labeo dyocheilus and Ompok bimaculatous,caught from the Peshawar Valley section of Kabul River.It was observed that the bioaccumulation of Zn, Cr and Pb was very high in fishs as compared Cd and Pb. Furthermore the concentration of Zn, Ni, Cr, Cd and Pb in fish samples, were exceeding the RDA limits. It can be concluded that continuous use of these fishes may cause health problems of different kinds to fish consumers. The issue needs proper attention at national and local levels.

Our earth's crust is the ultimate source of all metallic elements present in the ecosystem. Globally there are 35 metals that concern us because of residential or occupational exposure; 23 of these are the heavy metals. In this study, the level of heavy metals pollution in poultry chicken (Gallus domesticus) at Karachi, Hyderabad and Thatta were investigated during the year 2007-9. A total 200 random poultry organs (liver, brain and heart) of same aged groups of chickens were collected from poultry shops of 6 selected locations, and 4 heavy metals Cd, Ni, Cu and Pb were analyzed. Based on results that all chickens samples were contaminated with Cadmium (Cd), Nickel (Ni), Copper (Cu) and Lead (Pb). Copper has been recorded as highest level contamination as compared to three other metals Cd, Ni, and Pb. During the study on the basis of feeds samples analyzing, metals may be have been transferred via poultry feeds to poultry chickens. The research techniques and results are helpful for graduate and research students of Biological Sciences, Environmental Science and Poultry Science students.
