The focus of this work is the design and performance evaluation of Network on Chip (NoC) based multi-core hardware accelerators for computational biology. Sequence analysis and phylogenetic reconstruction are the two problems in this domain which have been addressed here. An effective approach to speed up such operations is to integrate a very high number of processing elements in a single chip so that the massive scales of fine-grain parallelism inherent in this application can be exploited efficiently. Network-on-Chip (NoC) is a very efficient method to achieve such large scale integration. Specifically, we (i) propose optimized NoC architectures for different sequence alignment algorithms that were originally designed for distributed memory parallel computers, (ii) a custom NoC architecture for solving the breakpoint phylogeny problem (iii) provide a thorough comparative evaluation of their respective performance and energy dissipation.

Over the past decade, workload has been extensively studied in the field of ergonomics. Most investigations conducted have concerned tasks that require participants to engage in a high level of cognitive processing, such as driving, piloting, and motorcycling. Using a visual display terminal (VDT) to enter data is a common and important task in the workplace. This book reported a series of studies that examined how mental workload and cognitive processes are associated with prolonged engagement on data entry tasks using behavioral measures and electroencephalography. The studies also examined the extent to which mental workload can be modulated by different work/rest schedules. Based on the findings, a mental workload model for low level information processing was proposed and implications for occupational health issues, especially on the design of work/rest schedules for VDT workers, was discussed.

The focus of this work is the design and performance evaluation of Network on Chip (NoC) based multi-core hardware accelerators for computational biology. Sequence analysis and phylogenetic reconstruction are the two problems in this domain which have been addressed here. An effective approach to speed up such operations is to integrate a very high number of processing elements in a single chip so that the massive scales of fine-grain parallelism inherent in this application can be exploited efficiently. Network-on-Chip (NoC) is a very efficient method to achieve such large scale integration. Specifically, we (i) propose optimized NoC architectures for different sequence alignment algorithms that were originally designed for distributed memory parallel computers, (ii) a custom NoC architecture for solving the breakpoint phylogeny problem (iii) provide a thorough comparative evaluation of their respective performance and energy dissipation.

This study focuses on developing an approach to solve the complex problem of task allocation and motion coordination simultaneously for a large fleet of autonomous vehicles in highly constrained operational environments. A Simultaneous Task Allocation and Motion Coordination approach is developed to solve the problem in a concurrent manner. Furthermore, a novel algorithm: Simultaneous Path and Motion Planning is proposed for collision free motion coordination based on Dijkstra and A * algorithms. The appropriateness of heuristic and evolutionary algorithms to solve the problem is investigated. A distributed computational architecture is also developed to improve the efficiency of implementation of the approach. The proposed approach is tested with static and dynamic environments, and validated by using data from an automated container terminal with fleet of autonomous straddle carriers.

A unique investigation of the state of the art in design, architectures, and implementations of advanced computational infrastructures and the applications they support Emerging large-scale adaptive scientific and engineering applications are requiring an increasing amount of computing and storage resources to provide new insights into complex systems.
