Colposcopic examination of cervix with cervical cytology is very frequently used to screen the cervical lesion. Accuracy of cervical cytology is less as compared to Histopathological examination. Therefore histopathological examination of biopsies of cervical lesions and hysterectomy specimens is the gold standard. Carcinoma of the cervix is the most common cancer in Indian women and accounts for 20% of all malignant tumours in the females. In this book we discussed anatomy, epidemiology, aetiopathogenesis, benign squamous cell lesions, benign glandular lesions and other tumors of the cervix. This book is very helpful for postgraduate students and faculties of Pathology and Obstetrics and Gynecologists.

Paremala K, Monica Charlotte Solomon, Nirmala N. Rao Odontogenic Keratocysts

Odontogenic keratocysts are common, locally destructive lesions of the head and neck region. They can occur as solitary or multiple lesions, and if multiple, they are mostly associated with Gorlin-Goltz syndrome. This study aims to categorize the odontogenic keratocysts which behave more aggressively, using conventional histopathological techniques. The present study exploits conventional histopathological techniques to gain an insight into the behavior of the odontogenic keratocyst (both solitary and non-syndrome associated multiple odontogenic keratocysts). Thus conventional histopathological techniques can provide valuable information which may be useful to categorize those odontogenic keratocysts that have more aggressive biological behavior and helps in deciding the treatment protocol.

If you are among the 60,000 North Americans who go on dialysis each year, the information in this book could substantially improve your quality of life. In Coping with Kidney Disease, a leading expert tells you, in plain English, what you need to know to: * Understand kidney failure * Recognize early warning signs of kidney failure * Get a proper diagnosis * Talk with your doctors about it * Confidently evaluate treatment options * Take charge of your treatment * Delay dialysis or even avoid the need for it altogether The centerpiece of Coping with Kidney Disease is Dr. Walser's revolutionary 12-step program for avoiding dialysis. Based on treatments he has pioneered with his own patients at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, the program calls for a supplemented low-protein diet supported by treatments to control blood pressure and correct high cholesterol. So effective has this breakthrough strategy proven to be that in many patients it actually worked to slow or arrest the progression of kidney failure to the end stage. Knowledge is power. Coping with Kidney Disease empowers you with what you need to take charge of kidney disease.

Matter Yasser Live Donor Kidney Transplantation

Renal transplantation is the best available renal replacement therapy for end-stage renal disease. Kidney transplant recipients have a better quality of life and consume fewer health care resources compared with patients on dialysis . The number of patients with end-stage renal disease is rising rapidly, while those who can undergo a kidney graft are limited because of the donor organ shortage. The outcomes of living donors are superior to those from cadaveric sources . Therefore, much effort has been made to increase the supply of living donors. Improvements in use of immunosuppression and advances in tissue typing have been associated with improved patient and graft survival in recent years .So the present study is conducted to compare the long-term results of kidney transplantation from living unrelated donors (LURDs) with that from living related donors (LRDs) and its impact on graft and patient survival. This study comprised 2485 kidney transplant recipients who received their grafts between March, 1976 and December, 2013 at our center. Out of them, 2075 received their grafts from LRDs (related group), while the other 410 received their grafts from LURDs (unrelated group).

In vivo stains are the prompt resources, which have emerged in recent years so as to aid as clinical diagnostic tools in detecting early potentially malignant and malignant lesions. Toluidine blue by its property of retaining in the increased DNA and RNA cellular activity areas, aids in delineating the suspicious areas. However, it is hazardous if swallowed, and was shown to have toxicity to fibroblasts. Methylene blue has a similar chemical structure and exhibits similar physicochemical properties to toluidine blue. It is less toxic to the human body and has recently been proposed for screening some gastrointestinal or prostate tumors. The application of this material in detecting oral lesions has so far not been addressed. The objective of this study was to evaluate the sensitivity and reliability of in vivo staining with methylene blue as a diagnostic adjunct in screening for oral malignant or potentially malignant lesions. The present study involved the examination of seventy five patients suspected of having oral malignant or potentially malignant lesions by methylene blue staining.

MD PhD Rahul M. Jindal The Story of the First Kidney Transplant in Guyana, South America. And Lessons for Developing Countries

The first part of the book narrates the story of a single mother from Georgetown in Guyana who made an appeal to help her son dying of kidney failure to obtain a kidney transplant which was not available in their country. They needed help to travel to India to get the transplant. The flyer appealing for help lands in the hands of a Guyanese-American, George Subraj, who is intrigued by this appeal. He seeks the help of Indian-born Transplant Surgeon, Dr. Rahul M. Jindal, who, in turn, organizes a medical team to perform the surgery. This is also a story of how Americans come together to save the life of a young man in Guyana, whose determined single mother refused to give up. In the second part of the book, the social aspects of transplantation are discussed which include medical compliance, anxiety and depression in kidney transplant recipients and social networks pertaining to kidney transplantation. In the third part of the book, the economics of kidney transplantation in developing countries are discussed, along with the economics of peritoneal versus hemodialysis, pre-emptive kidney transplantation for developing countries, health policy for treating renal failure in developing countries and finally commercialization of kidney transplantation - a problem which is increasing world-wide.

Non-pathologists, such as toxicologists and study personnel, can find it difficult to understand the data they receive from pathologists. Toxicological pathologists write long, detailed and highly technical reports. Study personnel are under daily pressure to decide whether lesions described in pathology reports are treatment-related and thus important to the pharmaceutical company or whether the lesions are background changes and thus of little significance. Written by experienced toxicological pathologists, Pathology for Toxicologists: Principles and Practices of Laboratory Animal Pathology for Study Personnel serves to bridge the gap in the understanding of pathology data, enabling non-pathologists to more easily comprehend pathology reports, better integrate pathology data into final study reports and ask pathologists relevant questions about the test compound. This succinct, fully referenced, full colour book is suitable for toxicologists at all stages of their training or career who want to know more about the pathology encountered in laboratory animals used in safety studies. Key features include important chapters on spontaneous and target organ lesions in rats, mice, non-human primates, mini pigs, rabbits and beagle dogs as well as information on general pathology, macroscopic target organ lesions, ancillary pathology techniques, haematology, biochemistry and adversity. Optimal adherence to immunosuppressants in renal transplant patients is vital for the survival of the transplanted kidney. Pharmacists are in an ideal position to counsel and support patients on adherence to medication and should be actively involved in the multidisciplinary healthcare team providing patient care, specifically medication taking. The aim of this study was to assess whether a pharmacist led adherence enhancing intervention involving structured counselling and providing adherence tools such as diary cards and pillboxes, improved adherence to immunosuppressive therapy in renal transplant patients. This study indicates the need for further research into this area especially in the measurement of adherence. New more accurate methods for measuring adherence are required. The pharmacist's role could also be improved by educating pharmacists at undergraduate level about the importance of adherence and including it in the training of all aspects of patient care, and providing information and support via continuing education to pharmacists already working in the profession.

Motor evoked potentials (MEP) elicited by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) are used to asses corticospinal tract (CST) function in clinical practice. Advancements in technology have increased TMS precision yet clinical protocols do not reflect the gain in precision required for neuroscientific research. The aim of this study was to determine whether parameters extrapolated from MEP responses accurately reflect CST function. TMS was administered to healthy controls and acute subcortical stroke patients. A sigmoid-shaped dose-response curve was observed in control subjects and patients with lesions outside the CST. Relative amplitude of MEPs is the best descriptor of CST integrity. Absence of a sigmoid relationship indicates CST impairment.

It also presents a study on role of non-surgical endodontic treatment as a sole treatment in management of endo-perio lesions. It also emphasizes on importance of long term follow-up in managing of such cases.

We performed a retrospective study between December 2010 and May 2011 on all retinitis pigmentosa (RP) cases seen from Okara during ophthalmological consultation at Lyton Rahmatullah Benevolent trust (LRBT) hospital from August 2008 to January 2011. The aim of this study was to determine the preponderance of low vision and blindness in retinitis pigmentosa in patients of Okara. The techniques used for the diagnosis of retinitis pigmentosa were an examination of ocular fundus using a biomicroscope (fundoscopy), far visual acuity and visual field. Indeed, a drop in visual acuity and blindness were the main reasons for consultation in this study. 100 cases were reported of which two were with family history from Okara, 70 male and 30 females were affected from RP. The average age of RP patients was 27.45 with a range of 4-78 years. Blindness and low vision was observed in 54% of the patients and 40% respectively. The average age of RP patients with low vision ranges from 6-50 years and the average age of RP patients with blindness range from 9-65 years. Patients should be screened to enable them to benefit from management focusing on both appropriate treatment and genetic counseling.

Joe Correa 130 Kidney Disease Juice and Meal Recipes. Give Your Body What It Needs to Recover Fast and Naturally

130 Kidney Disease Juice and Meal Recipes: Give Your Body What It Needs to Recover Fast and NaturallyBy Joe Correa CSN Kidney disease is defined as any form of abnormality in these organs. These abnormalities prevent normal kidney function and lead to some serious medical conditions, mainly waste products are kept inside your body. Without a proper treatment, kidney disease can lead to complete kidney failure and a life-threatening condition. The main causes of kidney disease are diabetes, high blood pressure, urinary tract infections, overuse of different drugs, inherited kidney disease, and of course an unhealthy diet based on highly processed foods full of different chemicals. In order to keep your kidneys healthy and prevent complications, you need to learn how to recognize the first symptoms related to kidney disease. These symptoms include poor sleep, swelling in your ankles, vomiting, overall weakness and lack of energy, shortness of breath, and urination problems. All of these symptoms should be examined by your physician to determine their cause.Just like every other medical condition, kidney disease is closely related to a poor diet and an unhealthy lifestyle. Researchers have discovered numerous links between inflammation and some foods that are able to prevent chronic and degenerative conditions. Foods like bell peppers, cabbage, cauliflower, garlic, apples, cranberries, blueberries, raspberries, cherries, and grapes are rich in antioxidants that are able to neutra...

Sherif Mohamed Tumour necrosis factor-alpha and weight loss in chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases

Master's Thesis from the year 2001 in the subject Medicine - Neoplasms, Oncology, , language: English, abstract: Weight loss is a common feature in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The clinical importance of weight loss; particularely loss of fat-free mass (FFM) has been demonstrated in its adverse effects on physical performance and quality of life. Moreover; weight loss and a low body weight are unfavorable prognostic factors in survival, independent of lung function.Mechanisms of malnutrition in those patients are not fully understood. Several factors have been implicated. Increased resting energy expenditure (REE) contributes the main hypothesis for weight loss in COPD patients. However, not all patients with COPD who lose weight are hypermetabolic.Recent data have shown that a systemic inflammatory response is present in patients with COPD. A clear evidence for a relationship between weight loss and plasma tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-*) has been shown in COPD patients. TNF-* produces a cachexia-like syndrome in animal models and has been implicated as a mediator of cachexia in several clinical conditions including cancer, chronic heart failure, cystic fibrosis and anorexia nervosa.Nutritional assessment for COPD patients is essential; to identify those individuals who will benifit from nutritional support therapies and to determine baseline values to measure the effectiveness of nutritional intervention. It includes several methods, n...

Hussein Jihan, El-Khayat Zakaria, Medhat Dalia History of kidney diseases and stem cells

Diabetes mellitus and hypertension represent major causes of chronic kidney diseases and initiation of dialysis; In addition, glomerular diseases, malnutrition, infectious diseases, and acute kidney injury can progress to end-stage renal disease, contributing to the increased global burden of death associated with this condition. Current treatment modalities often fail to target the major underlying contributors for progression of renal disease. Indications for kidney transplantation have expanded considerably in terms of recipient age, primary disease leading to end-stage renal failure, and degree of deterioration in clinical condition at the time of transplantation. The wide tissue distribution and multipotent differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) together with the observed reparative effects of infused MSCs in many clinical and preclinical models strongly suggest a critical role of MSCs in injury healing. MSC hold special promise for renal repair, because nephrons are largely of mesenchymal origin. MSCs attenuated renal inflammation, endoplasmic-reticulum stress, and apoptosis through mechanisms involving cell contact.

Lisa Frieden Dialysis. a Memoir

Lisa Frieden was a young professional with a bright future ahead of her in high tech public relations, when tragedy struck. Dialysis: a Memoir describes the year she spent on dialysis, from her initial hospitalization with kidney failure, through the months on hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, to her successful transplant operation with a kidney donated by her husband. Her experience of illness was at odds with the wildly buoyant atmosphere of the San Francisco Bay Area where she lived and worked during the dotcom bubble of the late 1990's. The memoir explores how she learned to make sense of what happened to her and how she ultimately overcame the physical and emotional challenges of kidney failure to thrive in her new life.

Mukesh S. Role of Fluconazole in Management of Radiotherapy Induced Mucositis

A total of 48 patients with head and neck cancer were studied. All patients were treated with radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgery was added in some of the cases. Patients were randomized into control and the treatment arms. Three oral swabs for candidiasis was taken from all the patients, first one was taken before start of radiotherapy, second one during third week of treatment and last swab was collected at the end of treatment. Patients in the treatment arm were given prophylactic flucanozle 50 mg oral daily during the radiation treatment. The main end points of the study was to evaluate the effect of fluconazole on prevention of oral candidiasis and to determine whether fluconazole prophylaxis will reduce the severity of oral mucositis. Patients were assessed for mucositis weekly. Patients in the treatment arm had less incidence of oral candidiasis and less severe mucositis as compared to the control arm. Prophylactic use of oral flucanazole is effective in reducing the incidence of oral candidasis and also the severity of oral mucositis.

Aichner Elisabeth Veronika Skin grafting for donor site wounds in elderly patients

Skin grafting is a well-established procedure using skin or skin substitute to cover non-healing wounds or burns with the body's own tissue. Management of donor site wounds in high-risk patients is crucial and bears a challenge, especially in an ever-growing eldely patient cohort, adequate to better knowledge and material supply. This clinical trial compares two artificial foam dressings and a temporary artificial skin repalcement dressing for donor site wounds in elderly patients receiving split-thickess skin graft surgery. Major criteria in this patient cohort were pain management, re-epthelialization time, prevention of infection, functionality and patient satisfaction. The "ideal wound dressing" always depends upon the patients's individural demands and there are different focuses at particular points in time. We observed painlessless most important for patients immediately after surgery. Both dressing materials guaranteed a supportive and painless healing process with low intervention and thus meet requirements of an ideal dressing for high-risk patients best.

Monika Dahiya Prevalence of Oral Manifestations of HIV Infection

This book outlines the current epidemiology of HIV associated oral lesions globally and stratifies countries falling under all six WHO regional offices according to high, medium and low prevalence of oral manifestations of HIV infection. Currently there are many knowledge gaps in the prevalence of oral lesions related to HIV infection from different regions as majority of the countries have no database or referral system for these kind of lesions. This is an obstacle to the implementation of various HIV prevention and health promotion programmes as oral lesions are strong indicators of HIV infection, invariably often are the first lesions to be identified and reportedly, are markers of disease progression and parallel the changes in various laboratory markers like CD4 cell count and HIV viral load. Having such a database can prove to be very pivotal in our fight against AIDS because of its diagnostic and prognostic significance. This work is amongst some early studies to show the prevalence globally across countries falling under all six WHO regional offices.

Pathology for Toxicologists: Principles and Practices of Laboratory Animal Pathology for Study Personnel includes: Colour diagrams explaining how lesions are caused by either external compounds or spontaneously The anatomic variations and background lesions of laboratory animals Advice on sampling tissues, necropsy, ancillary pathology techniques and recording data A chapter on the haematology and biochemistry of laboratory animals Full colour photographs of common macroscopic lesions encountered in laboratory animals A comprehensive glossary
