Reimmer Ferdinand Women and Democracy in Developing World

Gender inequality in most democratic countries in the world including Ghana has been a major setback to development. For instance, scholars have postulated on practical ideals and measures that countries could apply to close the gender gap if not completely eradicate women under-representation existing in most countries including Ghana. Ironically, Ghana's population is made up of over 52% females but has less than 10% of females occupying political and economic positions within the country. This study "Women and Democracy in Ghana" analyzes the existing scholarly debate and discussions about the cultural and institutional causes for the under-representation of women within its political system. In effect, the book provides systematic evidence on the under-representation of women in Ghana's parliament from independence in 1957 to the current legislature elected in December of 2008. Also included in the book is the tabular representation of women in Ghana's parliament from 1957 to present. The research reveals that the under-representation of women within the political system has contributed in undermining Ghana's democratic regime.

Emmanuel Boon, Albert Ahenkan Enhancing food security and poverty reduction in Ghana through non-timber forest products farming. Case study of Sefwi Wiawso District

Project Report from the year 2008 in the subject Forestry / Forestry Economics, , course: Human Ecology, 38 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Food insecurity and poverty are the greatest global challenges facing the world today. Their redress is an indispensable requirement for sustainable development in developing countries, particularly in Africa. Poverty continues to be pervasive, intractable and inexcusable in the developing world particularly Sub-Saharan Africa. Extreme poverty ravages the lives of one in every four in the developing world (i.e. 1.2 billion people). The farming of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) is being promoted as a potential solution to the current high rates of malnutrition and poor health of the rural population, the degradation of tropical forests and the spread and intensification of poverty. However, the role of NTFPs in rural development in Ghana remains largely undervalued and understudied. This paper examines the contribution of NTFPs farming in enhancing poverty reduction, food security, sustainable forest management, and livelihoods improvement in the Sefwi Wiawso District (SWD) of the Western Region of Ghana. An exhaustive literature review and analysis of field data collected through administration of questionnaires, interviews and stakeholder consultations indicate that NTFPs are an important tool for addressing poverty amongst marginalised, forest-dependant communities in Ghana. 86% of farmers in SWD depend on ...

But there exists founded concern whether this development reaches Less Developed Countries (LDCs).Technological transformations, such as Information Communication Technology (ICT), open new possibilities in various areas. With a rapid technological development the world faces the challenge to match the pace of technological innovation with national and global policy innovation. This paper will analyse the following hypotheses:1. Internet connectivity has potential to promote economic growth and support sustainable development for LDCs.2. The application of the Internet technology carries risks for LDCs.3. Successful application of Internet technology requires appropriate sustainable policies and strategies. The analysis is based upon literature review of economic and development theories, literature about ICT in development with particular focus on the Internet, country and development related information, and statistical data focussing in particular on South Africa and Uganda.Inhaltsverzeichnis:Table of Contents:INTRODUCTION61.OVERVIEW - LITERATURE REVIEW112.THE INTERNET AND E-BUSINESS202.1Internet202.2E-Business212.3Internet Connectivity - Indicators223.ECONOMIC BENEFITS273.1Global proximity, global business networking273.2Communication and information retrieval283.3E-business opport...

After a short presentation of the concept of copyright, it is argued that worldwide technological change was and still is one of the most important factors influencing the development of copyright laws. However, it is also shown that this impact has not always been the same. This paper identifies four distinguishable 'epochs' which reflect different impacts of technology on the development of copyright law and it can be seen that basically the following 'epochs' can be found in various jurisdictions: 1. from 1445-1500 technological change was the initial drive for copyright law; 2. from 1500-1700 the stabilisation of political power through censorship determined copyright law; 3. from 1700-1886 technological progress is again in the centre of copyright developments and 4. from 1886-today technological progress is still highly influential, but the aim of international uniformity and economic considerations are of equally strong influence. Gabriel Awuah Development of a Country is a Collective Effort. The Case of Ghana

Our case country Ghana, like many others in Africa, is characterized by, for example, mass poverty, huge foreign debts, poor socio-economic infrasturcture and entrepreneurial base, inability to meet the challenges of the forces of globalization, and heavy reliance on foreign loans and aid. Often times the development of the country has been the sole responsibility of a single entity, a government or a few ruling elites. It is argued in this book that to overcome the problems mentioned above, involving many actors (e.g. industry, government, universities, and the general public)will produce a collective effort, which will enable the actors to leverage their complementary capabilities to bring about a sustainable economic development. In this book we emphasize areas in which Ghana should invest now in order to effect sustainable development, which will translate into, example, poverty reduction, enabling environment for firms to emerge, grow and be competitive.

Quayson Emmanuel, Adu-Bitherman Paul Migration and Socio-Economic Status of Rural Households

There is the growing concern by governments of most developing countries over the implications of migration on the socio - economic development of their people. In Ghana, this concern has been well articulated by civil society organizations, District Assemblies, local and international NGOs as well as governmental agencies. Particular emphasis has been placed on how to deal with the extent to which internal migration impedes rural development through the loss of able-bodied young men and women who could assist in tilling the land to produce food and cash crops for the upkeep and sustenance of the household in particular, and the community as a whole. There have been efforts by the government of Ghana local and international NGOs as well as some civil society organizations to deal with the serious threats that migration poses to the environment and the employment situation in the urban centres. However, most rural communities in Ghana are still under- developed, to some extent, as a result of migration. It is in view of the above that this study was carried out to identify the factors that influence migration and its impact on the status of rural household resources in the district.

Kwame A. Ninsin The Corrupt Elites. Anatomy of power and wealth in Ghana

The Corrupt Elites is a simple and straight-forward narrative in which explains the incidence of corruption or the rise of corruption within successive historical conjunctures in the Ghana. Some of the questions raised and answered in the study relate to how the Ghanaian precolonial, colonial and post-colonial states and their mutually interrelated political processes affected the production and distribution of wealth. In particular, how political decisions and interests of the political elites influenced the location of economic activities and the distribution of the costs and benefits of these activities. An explanation is given as to why corruption has festered in the Ghanaian polity and recrudesced from the 1990s with such devastating social, economic and political effect. The purpose of this essay is to substantiate the assumptions underpinning the narrative with concrete historical evidence.

Mensah Adinkrah Witchcraft, Witches, and Violence in Ghana

Witchcraft violence is a feature of many contemporary African societies. In Ghana, belief in witchcraft and the malignant activities of putative witches is prevalent. Purported witches are blamed for all manner of adversities including inexplicable illnesses and untimely deaths. As in other historical periods and other societies, in contemporary Ghana, alleged witches are typically female, elderly, poor, and marginalized. Childhood socialization in homes and schools, exposure to mass media, and other institutional mechanisms ensure that witchcraft beliefs are transmitted across generations and entrenched over time. This book provides a detailed account of Ghanaian witchcraft beliefs and practices and their role in fueling violent attacks on alleged witches by aggrieved individuals and vigilante groups.

This book describes proactive local strategies adopted by a local authority in Ghana to transform its oil palm chain to turn around the fortunes of the local economy and injected dynamism to stimulate local economic development. The study reveals that meso-institutions such as sector-based and territorial ones were catalysts for the growth and development of SMEs. However, the use of sector-based institutions such as business associations to reach the SMEs led to the exclusion of a greater number of SMEs. It confirms that improved business environment; access to credit,BDS and membership of business associations correlate with higher productivity and strong enterprise performance. Micro-level enterprise strategies and meso-level interventions were not sufficient to transform SMEs. It stresses influences from the broader regulatory environment for the transformation of SMEs and even proper functioning of meso-institutions. It has been confirmed that the development of less endowed localities depends on their development potential and accessibility to markets. The study finds that these drivers govern the economic growth and development process and generate externalities

Disclaimer: The views expressed in this book are solely those of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of the Coalition of Chiefs for Bono East Region. Political administrative regions are created in response to complex economics, politics, and endless array of forces. In a developing country such as Ghana, region creation is primarily seen as part of a broad process of industrialization as a result of spatial dynamics of population and economic activity.New regions affect population dynamics as, for instance, when businesses extend their presence and operations into them. This increases the population of the existing districts and municipals within the region. Those districts and municipals that become too big may be split up into smaller units. Thus, the new district and municipal assemblies join the existing ones to spread socioeconomic development across the country through local governance. This helps fulfill the core mandate of districts and municipals, as drivers of socioeconomic development. To help minimize historical distortion, this book tells about the untold story behind the Bono East Region and the impressive contributions made by certain individuals. This will serve as their legacy so that future generations can read about those contributions and accord them their rightful places in history.

The mixed research method was used as well as primary and secondary data. The primary data was collected through questionnaires and interview guides. Purposive and simple random sampling techniques was used to select 100 respondents for the study. The findings of the study revealed that there are various existing regulations governing the electronic media in Ghana. It was also found that there are problems and challenges facing the NMC in the discharge of its duties. This has to do with the electronic media ownership, employees and team compositions and the internal weaknesses electronic media houses in ensuring adhering to the NMC regulations. The study recommends that Ghana Parliament should pass a law to empower the NMC to be more biting.

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2008 in the subject Forestry / Forestry Economics, Vrije University Brussel (Human Ecology Department), 52 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The role of medicinal plants in traditional health care delivery in Ghana cannot be overemphasized. More than 250 indigenous trees and plants with healing properties have been scientifically catalogued in Ghana. Unfortunately, the very foundation upon which the medicinal plant species and the traditional health care system survive is threatened by deforestation. The rate of deforestation has increased by 50% over the last ten years, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The current area of intact forest is now estimated at between 10.9 and 11.8% of the original cover and 6.9% of the country's total area. Deforestation is changing the habitats of disease-carrying insects and creating conditions that may help to spread malaria, river blindness and other devastating illnesses. Moreover, since the majority of the rural poor in Ghana depends on traditional medicine for their health care needs, the present high rate of deforestation will have a detrimental effect on the heath care delivery system in the country. Important plant species will be lost to deforestation unless urgent measures are taken. This paper examines the impact of deforestation on medicinal plants in Ghana.

Florian Meyer Donor harmonisation, Ownership and Aid Effectiveness

Master's Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Development Politics, grade: 1,0, University of Birmingham (International Development Department), language: English, abstract: This paper deals with the aid instrument budget support and discusses its strengths and weaknesses in terms of the expected effects of the instrument in areas such as donor harmonisation, ownership, aid effectiveness and accountability. By presenting the international context in which the rise of program-based approaches, such as budget support, took place and by summarizing the actual debate about the instrument and its effectiveness, the paper elaborates a set of assumptions and hypothesises which are affecting the overall performance of the instrument and have to be addressed based on the specific country context. In consequence, it examines and tests these assumptions by critically analyzing the Multi Donor Budget Support in Ghana based on a field study conducted in Accra in July 2010. The central argument of the paper is that general budget support can be one of the most effective aid instruments available at the time, as long as problems inherent to the instrument are addressed and tackled to prevent negative side effects. It comes to the conclusion that the MDBS in Ghana, although there is still room for improvement and entry points for critique, is a functioning example on how to acknowledge and implement the principles of the Paris Declaration on...

Rikke Stokholm Riemer The Dynamics of Sustainable Land Management in Northern Ghana

Land degradation is rising in Northern Ghana and the national government and various NGOs are seeking to address and to prevent the derivative consequences of this development. Unsustainable farming practice contributes to land degradation, and agricultural extension service is a shared means of intervention for the promotion of sustainable farming. By taking a deeper look at the state-NGO-society dynamics, the work provides an analysis of the consequences of actors' different understandings and approaches to unsustainable land management. The analysis is focused around the interplay between historical political discourses, national policies and specific NGO interventions with relation to extension services. The analysis casts light on power relations and their influence on land management in Northern Ghana. Despite the fact that the government and the NGO used as a case are placed within different discourses regarding views on small-scale farmers' capabilities, there are indications that the gap between the two actors is closing. An increasing emphasis on decentralisation and participation is creating new opportunities and room for manoeuvre for more actors.

Eric Kwadwo Amissah The Representation of Ruling and Opposition Parties in State-owned Newspapers in Contemporary Ghana

This book has been written basically to analyse a typical phenomenon concerning the media/politics nexus in contemporary Ghana by exploring how the processes of Othering are linguistically embedded in the political discourses of the state-owned Ghanaian newspaper, the Daily Graphic, when representing the relation between the ruling and opposition parties in Ghana since 1992. Secondly, the aim of this book is to demonstrate how Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) can be applied (or broadened) to alternative settings - here, alternative settings refer to contexts in which a conflict is not the topic of the discourse - and finally, to demonstrate that the scope of CDA can be broadened to include alternative settings.

Pincas Stephane, Loiseau Marc A History of Advertising

The history of western advertising dates back at least the 1630s, when Frenchman Theophraste Renaudot placed the first advertising notes in La Gazette de France. In 1786, William Tayler offered his services as "Agent to the Country's Printers, Booksellers, etc," but the term "advertising agency" originated in 1842, when Volney B. Palmer opened for business in Philadelphia. Widely accepted as the birth of modern advertising, this marks the beginning of a creative industry that has radically transformed our culture and language. Divided into sections by decades, this book explores the legendary campaigns and brands of advertising's modern history, with specific anecdotes and comments on the importance of every campaign. You will find the picture of the camel that originated the Camel pack, the first Coca Cola ad, and even how artworks by masters such as Picasso and Magritte have been used in advertising. About the author: Stephane Pincas and Marc Loiseau are advertising veterans from Paris, having worked over three decades in top creative departments and on social research respectively. During their long period in the industry, mostly at the fourth largest communication group Publicis, they have helped to build some legendary French brands nationally and internationally. Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Interactive Television (iTV) has been around for several decades. Most people have probably heard the term before. Having started in the USA with some trials it is now conquering the UK. The first interactive services on Digital TV (DTV) have been broadcasted 18 months ago and are continuously growing in number. The four platform providers – Sky, NTL, ONdigital and Telewest – are trying to make their interactive services as appealing as possible and are, of course, offering new advertising opportunities for advertisers on that new medium. The aims of this project are to analyse those new advertising opportunities and compare them to advertising on traditional TV and the Internet and find out whether advertising on iTV combines their strengths and overcomes some of their weaknesses. In order to achieve this, the literature review focuses on the identification of the strengths and weaknesses of advertising on traditional TV and the Internet and also provides a good overview over the iTV market in the UK and the current developments. The UK is leading the way in the development of iTV and is even supposed to be 12 to 18 months ahead of the USA. The market is highly competitive and fragmented with the four different platform providers offering three different forms of receiving DTV, of which satellite is leading in the numbers of subscribers. The predictions of the DTV uptake are very positive and the spendings for advertising on iTV are supposed to be tre...
